- I was invited to join the Burghfield Island Boat Club on the Kennet & Avon canal at Reading to see what they get up to. It's a not for profit, member-run organisation that provides moorings and boater facilities as well as a big social environment.

Anybody can film cruising, nobody gives the history plus interesting insights of life on the canals like you. Good job.
Perfectly said.
I miss David's cruising vlogs. He can tell a story, you don't realize just how well until you see some of the other cruising vlogs that just aren't the same.
so true! Greetings from Tricity in Poland :-)
It's always great to see a video from our favorite narrow boat channel popping up on RUclips home 😃
Thank you
Still the best RUclips chañel.
Thanks ince again David ❤
This is the kind of story about the canals that nobody else does. The club looks like a terrific place: relatively inexpensive mooring, access to amenities, social events, and encouragement to participate in the community. It makes living on a boat less lonely, I imagine
Thanks. I was worried that the channel would die after you moved off the boat. But you continually surprise me with the range of varied topics and regular videos.
Not seen another like this, for instance.
Thanks!
The canals are one of the glories of England because of their strong community spirit and the beautiful countryside they traverse.
David, don’t want to give you a big head. However! The things you find on the canals,is just amazing. Your way of presenting is just so good. You bring joy to me, in these sad and difficult times. One people, one faith🙏👍🇦🇺
Cheers
I visited that island in 1967 to do some work on an ex-wartime MTB moored there. I can still distinctly remember visiting a house there that had the rusting remains of a 'blower' Bentley in it's shrubbery. Thank you for reviving a treasured memory.
We live and learn. What an amazing place. Thank you for taking us there.
What a lovely place. Great to know projects such as this one are happening around the UK. Thanks for the insight.
I love the way you put small out of the way and likely to be overlooked places front and center AND do so so gently and with such affection for them. Love the historical and cultural aspect of all this.
And I LOVE the mostly volunteer community of this. It's so nice to see people with a similar interest and passion showing up and pitching in for everyone's benefit.
Great seeing people mucking in to maintain this community of boaters in such an idylic setting. No wonder there's a waiting list for moorings!
Well done to those club people, what a nice group they are. They put in a lot and that’s why it’s so obviously good. Thanks for the vid.
Wonderful idea to show more of the social life around the canals. Thanks
Seems like a cool and tight nit little area this, and the idea of the club with doing jobs around the area to keep your mooring space seems fair enough 👍
Definitely!
i follow a few young couples on their narrowboats, but nothing beats you and your videos. many thanks as usual. 😀
Wow, thank you!
@@CruisingTheCut
Seriously David the youngsters do more cinema vérité type stuff (fair enough) but your work is rather more considered.
@@t1n4444looked pretty real to me .
What a wonderful place - thank you for introducing it, and if you ask me (uh... even if you don't 😅) thanks too for a very well crafted and edited video as usual!
I cannot get enough of David's archive-worthy, entertaining and informative posts here on CTC. Posh! Cheers.
Lived in Reading since 1970 ... Not far from this place .. walked the footpath many times .. and the watering hole 'The Cunning Man' .... But never knew it was such a Social Hub ... Thought it was just workshops ..... Goos Video Young Dave .......
My first thoughts were 'I bet that's expensive', then it all unfolded in front of my eyes. Great subject and video as always David. My fingers are crossed for a Christmas Special 🤞🤞🤞
Having crossed the adjoining Burghfield Road bridge to and from work for many, many years, what a delight to finally see what goes on within that “mysterious” island. Thank you 👏👏👍😎
Always good to have one of your offerings of a dark Sunday evening. The vlog equivalent of a roaring fire and the dog curled up on your lap 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks David, someone who got it right, the K&A is two river navigations and a canal centre.
What a lovely club, and great facilities for the members. Top video.
Many thanks!
Ok. I was wrong. I was quite sure the channel would wither away when you moved ashore. But the delightful videos have continued and are even more interesting than before.
Looks like a lovely place to be! What a nice group of boaters. Thanks for introducing us, David. 😎💕😎💕😎🥰🥰🥰
That’s a lovely potted history and a look at the vibe of the Club. Looks very much like a community. More please :)
It sounds much nicer than being in a marina.
Enjoyed your brief cameo appearance on The Narrowboat Pirate channel. Cheers.
Great idea working together on common goals. I especially like the social aspect, which is lacking these days with the hustle and bustle of modern life.
So true!
Very nice. Missed the ducks! 😊
So pleased to find your channel again! I moved from the River Avon at Tewkesbury to Tennessee… missing boats sooo much! Lovely to hear all the news and info from my beloved waterways. Keep that info flowing.
Did you lose it?! 🤣
From the middle of the United States, thank you, David, for a wonderful video. My wife and I are volunteer gardeners and I'd like to join the Club members on a work day. Cheerio!
I imagine they'd love to welcome you
Sounds like an ideal place to call home.
I may well make a phone call as it is only a short drive for me to get there.
Associate membership sounds a great way to get oneself on the waiting list.
What a wonderfully cozy place, I'd love to be part of such a community. It's such a shame we have no canals in Denmark. Always a joy to see something new from you.
Denmark has a canal system , what are you talking about ?
@@brain8484 Christianshavns Kanal tæller ikke, det er minimalt og ikke så omfattende som kanalsystemet I UK.
Christianshavns Canal doesn't count, it's tiny and not as expansive as the canals in the UK.
Thats what community is all about, what a lovely place to stay on a narrowboat, lovely editing as always dave, cheers.
Truly interesting aspect to boating, having the club on the island. Always enjoy your videos, canals and the camper van.
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the look at the boat club. Much appreciated. Be well and stay safe.
That's just down the road from me, and have driven past there many times without even knowing about it!
All I need now is a boat! lol!
Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video. 🙂
Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing…!
well even thou you David arn't not cruising anymore the canals............. your utube channel.... here is still the best on the utube channel your knowledge and video here are just the best..... please don't stop............. we miss you on the canals as a narrow boater, but still love your Vvlogs.... thanks you...
Always a joy to watch your videos - interesting and relaxing to watch. Just the thing for a Sunday night
A good work out and good time what more could you ask for 😊
You always manage to show the beauty of where you are. But also show the places to stop on your way for facility’s like toilets and bins and more
Now that is a great idea such a good social island but I bet your business doesn't stay your own for long lol 😅
Could be a fantastic place with all the hands ✋️ helping to tidy the place.
Good visit cheers.
Kev the Brinklow kayaker 😅
Ah... moist cake by the river. Bliss!
A wonderful organization. It almost makes me wish I lived in the UK. But guess it's a bit late for me so I'll just be content to stay in the USA. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Never too late mate
Thank you for explaining (one kind of) boat clubs. They were always an unknown for me, when I would see them in your videos. It is interesting that the sign at the end said "Non residential" - I guess that means "no live a boards"?
Correct
good lord its starting to get cold, might have to rewatch 100 episodes or so
I'd be delighted to see something like this up north
I used to think 'one day he'll run out of ideas', but not any more! Very interesting, David, thank you once again.
Crikey, no pressure then 🤣🤣
CRT and Scottish Canals should watch this and take note. They should develop moorings like this. Not sterile, soulless moorings set up just to make money. Let the boaters govern themselves!
Love this episode David ! Thank you for sharing this with us
Cheers From California 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a wonderful tranquil spot.
Really enjoyed this one. Well put together and very interesting.👍
Many thanks!
We cruised past this island a few weeks back. We cheerfully greeted one old lady standing on the back of her boat with a good morning, only to get a dirty look back and ignored. They obviously don’t like outsiders!
Everyone can have a bad day sometimes :-(
Nice one David I’ve lived in Burghfield most of my life it was great to see your video thanks 👍👍👍👍
being an American and an official BBQ spotter, I can see from the drone shot they're having a fundraiser goat roast, and/or chicken (I've always loved the Cornell Chicken marinade myself) barbecue dinner fundraiser. Good for them. I would get on the list myself, if I A. Lived in the UK, B. Owned a Narrowboat.
Wow what a great effort to bring is an exceptional story!
Nice seeing another aspect of the canals👍👍
Thanks 👍
Dogs like fluffy microphones 😎 great vlog as always David
At .08/10:15 there seems to be a bush/tree moving down the sidewalk all by it’s self.😮😮😂😂 Cracked me up! Thanks for the vlog!😊😊
😁
Nice one Dave looks a great place to hang out 🙂🎥🎤✌️
It sure is
I'm almost tempted to buy a boat, just so I can moor there. I love the community aspect of the island. Thank you for this interesting video. ilona
Hi David!
That look like.a really nice place.
It is!
That is what we are, No one in between. and we can rely on each other
A very nice facility & island .... love that sea otter 😊😊😊😊
Looks like their boats are narrow, but their hearts are big.
wide
Keep these coming David. Great content.
Another really nice morning surprise blog ❤
Looks like a very enjoyable club.
Very interesting David..I do look forward to your posts so keep them coming please
Thanks, will do!
❤Thank you
Mandatory weekend viewing. Cheers!..and cheese sandwiches!
Nifty! Thanks for sharing this, David.
My pleasure!
They look like a great bunch of people David. Have you ever had dogs, or would you, if you could?
My family had dogs, I do like them
Fabulous place and another informative video from David.
Wow how fantastic is that. Love it. Great vlog. Thank you 🙏
Great video, and so interesting to learn about the boat club! Cheers
thanks David.
Cheers
Another great video. Sounds brilliant.
Glad you enjoyed it
How did i miss this one, great video mate
Crikey David!!!
Was that wise to mention about getting a berth there?
I wouldn't be surprised if the club is unundated with applications to join.
I wouldn't be surprised either were you pressganged into being their Membership Secretary.
You'll be there for weeks what with sorting out hundreds of thousands of the inevitable (and soon to arrive) mooring application letters 😂😂😂
Great bit of non techy content, so thanks very much, yet again, for interesting content David.
Seeing how members are motivated to do a certain amount of maintenance to maintain membership, it makes me pretty proud to be the sole informal, completely voluntary person taking care of a 100 acre abandoned nature education center, without membership benefits or financial assistance. Granted, there are no buildings to maintain. Just a couple acres of grass field and trails to keep cut, signs to maintain, trail paint blazes to be refreshed, and checking/clearing the several miles of trails of tree blow-downs. I also have a lofty goal of replacing a failed footbridge, so less mobile people will have access to more of the trail network.
😀😀
The 'poo tank' worried me a bit though. I can see the logic in filling it with water in floods so it doesn't float away. But at the same time, part of my ex-project manager's brain is saying (rather loudly) "what can possibly go wrong?"
Thank you for this video. This is very interesting from the sociological aspect of boat life. This does not really exist in Canada mostly because of winter. It would be impossible to live on a small boat in the winter here. Except the West Coast come to think of it.
IMO, your voice as the outro music comes into play is getting as iconic as William Woolard's voice over "Out of the Blue" by Elton John. !
Would be the one out there doing yard work which what I prefer over parties.
Thanks for this
My pleasure!
Lovely
Great video (and subject).
A most enjoyable video, thanks David.
Excellent, uplifting video.
It sounds amazing.
Greetings from Texas. Love the channel. Thanks!
Thank you 😊
Lovely Island and Club
Lovely little place.
Well done vlog today. Bridge views are always my favorite, especially with that water flow. Thank you for posting,❤
Excellent really enjoyed watching it
😀😀😀
Am really enjoying your channel!!!
Thank you so much!!
I so miss you and your boat lol
