I saw Commander Cody play at the University of Michigan Student Union in 1969-70 with Bill Kirchen playing guitar. We just liked the sound and had no idea we were seeing "classic" rock & country.
Lived in Colorado in the seventies...these guys, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Little Feat, Redbone, Poco, the Eagles and others did the country rock scene pretty damn well.
Whatta blast from the past! I only saw the Commander once with the original LPA crew back in 1970. We were goofing around Boston one evening in the Back Bay and came across this incredibly great sound coming from one of the night clubs (Passims?). Anyways, we had to check that band out and we were treated to one of the really great, tight bands that came out of that era. It's a shame digital recording was about 40 years too late to get the music of that era in it's youthful glory....
The end of the good days was much earlier where I was. By late 70, 71 the bottom dropped out for everything. And everything changed. Oh well, we had our day..lol
I'm with Phil,,, In the hot days, ole George was rocking.. Things were hot,,,, and these guys were doing it now ! Actually sorry to see how it seems to be in the last days .. I worked for Rick Higgenbottom and the Ozone road crew, hauling their band equipment around ... It was hot in the old days, I was 18 and got quite an education ..
ha!! indeed... back when people were cool, ya didn't trust anyone "over 30" and the world was a finer place. mind-altering, defining period of history. great time to be alive in many ways.. other than the war and shit. off to bed my friend. peace.
I know, everybody says that...but... in one of the lesser-known panels, those words do come out of Fat Freddy. However, I concede, the better-known poster version of Freewheelin Franklin is where he also says those sage lines.
The Commodore has always been 100% drug free - of course, at a glance you can see how even a minute bit of drugs can be of help! ROFL! GREAT VIDEO - SING IT BUDDY!
Back when you could hitch a ride coast to coast. Free everything. Yeah the war was bad, ruined some good people forever. And lost just as many. GNite, Peace Out
@gunslinger5854 Man, I remember when I was in college back in the late 70s and first heard CC and his LPA sing "Everybodys Doin' It" in my dorm room, I just absolutly laughed my ass off! In Albuquerque, The University of New Mexico's NPR radio station KUNM was legendary for pushing the envelope with such songs and formats. The Assylum Show on Friday nights with DJ "Malachai Mudgong" was legendary, and played lots of CC / LPA, and other "questionable" songs. .
Amen to that. Sensemia is crap compared to Mexican Gold , even if it weren't from Acapulco, or Panama red, when Columbian started appearing for $15 a "lid". After that the prices went sky high, and the quality went to hell. $100 used to buy a Ki..
Back in the 70's the pot was everywhere , $ 20 an ounce , $ 35 -$ 45 1/4 pound . I smoked some of this " komyro gyro " or what ever fancy name it goes by didn't even get a buzz . Some one toke stuff ya know . Did second hit nothing ... people acting high off it . I don't think they even know what high is . I liked the days of smoking up a nickel bag of Mexican with my friends better .
Yep, even Mexican with seeds was kick ass. Wasn't a lot of good has around anymore either. Just now and then. That was about the same time they Killed Jimi, Janis, and Jim.
definitely got harder to come by back then, lol... but the paraquat thing is what killed off thousands of years of quality selective breeding. bad government!! bad!! BAD!!!!
chronic? you kids got no idea about real weed...it was eradicated before you were born. ya'll can keep your chronic...you wouldn't be able to handle the weed we had when we were your age. ;) seriously.
Holy shit ! Commander has gone downhill. The early days this was a great song, the quality of this I'm afraid really sucks ass. Listen to this and then Lost In The Ozone Days, no comparison. This is just down right sad.
@gunslinger5854 Well I'll be dipped in Dogshit! YASSSS! yer just beggin fur a response, OK so it was indeed Freewheelin Franklin's boots that Fat Freddies Cat kept shittin in, I still have Freak Brother Comix 1-6 stashed in my basement along with Zap #1 and a copy of the Newsweek magazine with coverage of Woodstock in it. You know the sad part? I actually threw away what was left of my 20 year old stash because of my employment security clearance and piss tests, and voted Republican last week.
Rest in Peace, Commander. Thank you for so many years of great songs and shows. You put a lot smiles on a lot of faces.
This one hits hard.
Possibly one of the best songs ever written.

RIP George, Pete and Sherry, thanks for making this recording happen.

When I got down to seeds and stems I would start scraping that resin out of that old stem pipe back in 73. Shit I'm an old bastard now.
Me too! Used to save roaches. 2nd generation roaches. Pretty rough stuff. Not as hard as stems & seeds, though.
The end of the good days was much earlier where I was. By late 70, 71 the bottom dropped out for everything. And everything changed. Oh well, we had our day..lol
One of the good ole songs from way back!!! Aww youth...twas a magical time. Fifties not so awful bad either. Maui memories...was fun. Asi es la vida!
I think the good commander has lived out the songs that he wrote
a real tearjerker
God bless the good commander
You look like I feel...Thx Mr. Mirror...
Hail the Commander!

@modelleg Actually that particular quote is attributable to Freewheelin' Franklin
Jus stems these days!
That slide guitar makes a grown man want to weep!

Yeah buddy, seeds & stems. A sad, sad situation.
@skatrock1
I was corrected earlier: Freewheelin Frank said those immortal words.
Without Billy C. Farlow (who wrote the world's saddest song) the group has gone straight south.
The worlds saddest song!
Humpy I keep an old window screen and rub them slowly across the top. Always something there if u save them,,,
@MrRussellrentfro You are correct.
@modelleg Amen brother!!!
@modelleg as well as : .."A friend with weed is a friend indeed!"
He's aged well.
paraquat was 77 or 78.
Yep, worse now. IN a pickle Glad I got to enjoy the 60's and 70's. No other time like it.
Fat Freddy's cat used to crack me up.
@modelleg ....EXACTLY
@modelleg it was phineas
Been about 40 years since I last saw them in concert. Kinda disturbing.
Amen to that. Sensemia is crap compared to Mexican Gold , even if it weren't from Acapulco, or Panama red, when Columbian started appearing for $15 a "lid". After that the prices went sky high, and the quality went to hell. $100 used to buy a Ki..
Oat Willies, the Hole in the Wall, Soap Creek, the Back Room. Ah, Austin when it was Austin, ruled by hippies hanging out at AWH..

of The Fabulous Freak Brothers
This dude is the real thing. Not this bubble gum shit they play on that pasty ass country channel. Makes me want to gag everytime I pass by it.
Fat Freddy sez: weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed.
But I've always suspected that whoever first said that was a weed dealer.
two dislikes beat it
sorry bud, freewheelin franklin said that

Bill Kirchen does it better, no offence George.
He was the best!
Agree! Kirchen's maintained his chops far more too. The man's a nut on the Tele and still has strong vocals.
He IS the best!
I'm really sorry to say, but this is... Disappointing...
