We are specifically commanded not to worship Yahweh as the pagans worship their gods (Deuteronomy 12:29-32). Not to not drink coffee as the pagans do or not have birthday parties for children as the pagans do.
Remember Jesus came as a sword to separate us. If that's not happening in our lives, perhaps we should re-evaluate the way in which we walk.

The orgins of Christmas/ Saturnalia has a very interesting history and well worth the research.
The origins of the Christmas tree/ Baal worship also has a very interesting history also worth personal research.
The Sun/halo painted behind Jesus head also has a very interesting history. Paganism is deeply rooted in today's traditions. Make you wonder why it's even practice by Christians of the past which has passed on to the traditions of today.

Yeah it’s clear and direct and it’s not about Christmas trees, it’s about people cutting down trees and making idols/gods out of them. Never seen anybody worship their Christmas tree.
And the idea that Christmas trees are pagan is a myth. According to the Encyclopedia of Christmas and New Year’s Celebrations:
"The earliest known Christmas tree ornaments were apples.
Medieval actors used them to decorate the paradise tree, the central prop of the paradise play, a medieval European mystery play often performed on December 24. The apples represented the temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden" (p. 583).

2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
    Jeremiah 10:1-4

I'm surprised that the pastor doesn't know about this passage of scripture. I say, let the Lord be your guide. I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way;
This verse is your answer. If you can’t worship the Most High the way that you should you won’t be invited to the kingdom. He tells us how to glorify Him and it’s not a day full of shopping, commercialism, self reward, and chasing the world!! None of that says God!!

I heard a message on this recently that said, it’s not about what it means to us or how we are trying to celebrate it, it matters what it means to *Him*. God is the one being worshipped and He has always been clear about not wanting other gods leftovers and slapping His name over the top of it (think of when the Israelites tried to convert other gods altars to use as the Lords- just no!).
We are so far removed from the originations of a lot of these traditions that we think they’re not a big deal or it doesn’t matter anymore but to the Lord it’s the same as if it were 100 or 1000 years ago and he remembers good and well what they mean. It would be like giving your wife a gift that was for your first wife and saying “no , no sweetie, she means nothing to me! This locket is now for you!” She’s not going to want it and neither does God. I think you, dear brother Mark, are the one who needs to wake up and check your convictions and justifications.

@@HalleluYAH-b5dI think there are plenty of people who come in with good intentions and it doesn’t mean that the Lord wants it. I think that this whole “issue” of Christmas is not a salvation issue because of that. If you are a Christian and choose to celebrate, I don’t think the Lord will condemn you or that you are damned, etc. Where the issue comes in is for those Christians who feel convicted in their faith to choose not to, and have reasons for it, they are being told they are legalistic, need to be examined (like Pastor Mark said) or they are just dumb. I think that’s a problem. I think there are a myriad of reasons why Christmas should not be celebrated by Christians but most people don’t want to have a discussion about it and that’s fine. But there’s a reason for the saying “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Good intentions doesn’t get you out of being accountable for what the Holy Spirit convicts you of. And if you don’t feel convicted, then that’s great. Don’t shame others who do.

So He knows my heart, and its intentions. And you are right, one person decides which day is holy to them and another person, another day. The Lord convicts and leads each of us differently (I.e. some to marry and others to stay single, some to pastor, some to a different service) so where people are convicted is a personal journey. Where I disagree with Mark here is his dismissive attitude toward that Christian grandfather who does feel convicted. I also don’t like the dismissive nature towards what others use as their reasonings like it not being his actual birthday. Yes, we can celebrate it any day if you so choose but others aren’t wrong when they say 1) traditionally birthdays aren’t celebrated, 2) the Bible never asks us to celebrate this, 3) Nimrod, aka a sun god, had his birthday celebrated on December 25th and the church wanted to redeem that day, etc. there’s lots of different reasons and rationales and to belittle those is just wrong. I just learned the history of where Christmas came from. My husband and I both believe that we should celebrate each other and those we love throughout the year with bearing gifts not just one day a year. We also believe that we should glorify God for his great gift of Jesus Christ throughout the year. I am not going to label Christmas as a pagan holiday and those that worship Christ with remembering his birth on this particular day that they are dishonoring God. Personally this year I just decided not to celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense of buying great amounts of gifts getting a Christmas tree or decorating the house. Mainly due to my own convictions of wanting my life to totally please God and not allow any satanic influences in my home . Wanting to establish this home to be 100% Godly.

But the thing is we don’t celebrate it like the pagans do we worship Him at our homes and churches, which Christians even did in the Bible. But also Jesus was against those who were legalistic about how things were, but at the same time were sinners and held themselves higher than anyone else and Jesus proved they were wrong it. Jesus doesn’t care about the legalism of holidays. We as Christians celebrate Him in our hearts and with loved ones. That is honoring to God. Paul talks about praying without ceasing and to not stop honoring and worshiping God at a specific time or place, but wherever and whenever. The bible also talks about not eating meat that was sacrificed to other Gods, but we don’t and we wouldn’t if we knew it was, but we don’t know if the meat in stores was sacrificed to other God. Jesus said that after He died and rose again that the law is written on our hearts and He knows our hearts even in times of celebration. I consider in everything I do if it is honoring Him or not.

Why waste time with man-made religiousity and arguments while IGNORING GOD's appointed times? Does Christmas CONTAIN pagan ideas and imagery, YES. Does it contain worldly commerialized aspects? YES!
At the end of the day, there is A LOT of argument about a man made tradition, and yet the church ignores and writes off GOD's apponted times as "jewish holidays" that we dont need to keep.

42And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 45But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
47For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
48And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 50But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 51But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 52And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Christmas is pagan. Also if you are celebrating Santa then you are "lying" to your kids. Do not lie it is a part of the ten commandments. Also Jesus wasn't even born in December, why is it that we celebrate it then..its because the sun God Mithras, was born December 25th and they chose Jesus birthday be the same day so they could all celebrate it on one day( look it up). Anyways why would anyone want to support that? If it's about Jesus then celebrate in September and don't celebrate it near this outrageous holiday. It's okay to be around family and share gifts but do not speak of christ and then celebrate these types of things.

You are correct: Sunday is not the Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week. Bear in mind that God's instruction to keep the Sabbath was given to Israel and is only mentioned in the Old Testament. However, Jesus -- who said He came to fulfill the Law and bring a new covenenant to all believers (Jews AND Gentiles) -- was resurrected on Sunday, the first day of the week. Additionally, Acts 20 provides evidence the the early Church met on the first day of the week to break bread and remember Christ's death and resurrection, as well as to minister to one another. The New Testament also informs us that early Christians still met in local synagogues sometimes during the week, but it gives no mention of Saturday being a special day to be observed by Christians. Christ came to free us from the Law.

That's why Jesus said He was the fulfillment of the Law. His sacrifice on the cross atoned for all sin, something that neither animals sacrifices or the Law could not do. Jesus instituted a New Convenant, apart from the Law -- to Jews AND Gentiles -- and He said there are only TWO commandments: Love God with all your heart, soul and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. There's such a thing as discernment, and dividing. Satans lies always are a mixup of truth and lies. So there needs to be some unraveling and editing. Jesus was born on 1st of Nisan, Jewish scholars have utilised all clues in the bible to figure out. Thats around end of March start of April.

How do you know its the same tree? God is in the business of redemption anyway. So even if these were originally pagan, they haven't been for a long time and have been redeemed by Christ. He even went so far as to make Saint Nicholas a part of Christmas for his selfless deeds. The very name itself "Christmas" is mass of Christ! This is not a pagan holiday. An evil pagan religion being erased and replaced by Christ is the very essence of redemption and a massive win for God.

To those sincerely and deeply seeking/searching for truth: Pastor Robert Breaker (You Tube) provides a very detailed teaching on Christmas, which is supported by a plethora of historical facts. Some of the content includes the pagan origin of the tree; the lies about St. Nicholas (made up cover for Santa [Satan]); Nimrod (Nimrod's birthday is December 25). Its well done. It is an eye opener. I humbly and graciously recommend listening and....at least considering other possibilities.
I am not disagreeing with Pastor Mark Driscoll...but am attempting to bring additional awareness of satanic distortions of Christian holidays. Satan has been twisting and perverting everything that is Godly, in attempt to steer us away from Biblical/God truths.
Most Christians have come up in apostate churches. There are more apostate churches than true Biblical churches. It's a challenge facing most of us. Catholicism is loaded with paganism. Mormonism is a distortion of Christianity. And then there are the apostate churches...and groups...Osteen...Hinn....Meyers....etc.
Its difficult to be different. Its difficult to refuse to participate in Christmas traditions that we have been faithfullly following for years...but the path is narrow and we are being asked to make important choices. Its up to us to determine what choices feel in alignment with Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
One cannot honor God, while simultaneously practicing Paganism and paying hommage to Santa (satan).
As we become closer to God and more immersed in the Word, the false beliefs and traditions fall away.
May we all peel the scales back from our eyes and open to the truth. God Bless.

    Messianic Jew here.
For everyone bashing Christmas let me tell you:
Its the 1 day that Jesus gets recognized around the world and you want to take the recognition of Him away?
Half the Church doesnt even celebrate Christmas on December 25th so it a moot point to bash the 25th which is symbolic.
Everything in the world is touched by the fallenness of sin. Everything has been used for idolatry and paganism at some point. Sex has been used for pagan purposes, but you aren't doing away with sex in marriage.
All of history is tainted and none of us judge others who sincerely worship Him on a day He created whether Jesus was born on it or not at least people are celebrating Him. At that there were times God rebuked Israel for celebrating the right feasts, the right days, but with the WRONG heart and motive.
The feast of Lev.23 never changed but even Purim and Hanukkah are "added" feasts. Rosh HaShanah and was a time when Kings went to battle so there were lots of things in the ancient near east that God redeemed like Pastor Mark says. Not everything in Israel's culture in the Torah is original but God gave the true record and implementation of such.

The Israelites built a golden calf to honor God for bringing them out of slavery but they did it the only way they had been taught, the way the Egyptian honored their gods. This greatly displeased the Lord and he punished them for 40 years because of it. How you worship the one true God matters to him!

It is at the same time as the festival of Yule which was Anglo Saxon and Viking winter festival. It was a chance for people to have something to look forward to in the dead of winter. It did involve drinking and eating big feasts and coming together to get through the winter. I may be wrong but i think Yule was around the shortest day so after the festival it was onwards and upwards towards spring.

I had a lot of hope for Pastor Driscolls response but sadly am disappointed. He preaches so much about strong male leadership but shuns and mocks this father for being convicted and wanting to lead and correct his family in the truth of The Word that was shown to him, seems quite hypocritical to me. There is in fact a verse about cutting and adoring trees, surprised on his ignorance of that. And that comparison to Volkswagen is beyond a stretch and such a silly argument! Many things in our society have been created by pagans or non-christians, but no one is using their car as a means of worship or honor to our Savior, we don't need to repackage a holiday, when we were told when and for what purpose, are His Holy Days. He does care, very much, how we worship Him, and He has made that clear throughout His word, it's a shame so many "religious leaders" will tell you otherwise. Study to show yourselves approved.

@@MarkDriscollMinistries the person who wrote the letter seemed to have respect and appreciation for his insight as an elder, he may no longer be his adult childrens leader but they are in fact his immediate family, that doesn't change based on age. You could have responded with that, encouraging respectful interaction between them, and making decisions for their family as adults, as opposed to your snarky and disparaging remarks and accusations toward an elder in their family and guided them through a real issue that does come between family members. How is seeking to follow the word of God in truth and obedience, legalism? That seems to be the go to phrase when a reasonable rebuttal or proof of your argument based on scripture cannot be given. Or is it that you think the laws have been abolished and we no longer are required to keep HIS commandments? You can gather, clearly, from my initial comment that I do not celebrate christmas. Not sure what you mean by stubbornness, pettiness and a self righteous demeanor are also not a show of strength, and also not a very good example to those that see you as a teacher.

I've been challenged in the meaning of Christmas several times. Christmas is about Jesus Christ and mass. We are supposed to go to church Christmas day and celebrate baby Jesus. The Pope, over a thousand years ago, decided December 25th is Jesus' birthday and set the standard. The Christmas Tree in America came from the German celebration tree that was brought over by immigrants, that is a pine tree. The fourteenth President of the United States, Franklin Pierce, put up the first Christmas tree in the White House. The whole point of Christmas is about baby Jesus, goodwill toward Mankind, and celebration of Jehovah's mercy. The idea of Santa Claus is a pagan holiday, where it is a counterfeit of Christmas: Instead of angels, we have elves; instead of mercy before each other in Christ's forgiveness, we get material gifts; Santa has his own stories; Santa is judge instead of Jesus (naughty or nice).

In short, Christmas isn't in the Holy Bible, it is a celebration of Jesus, and this is appropriate. There is nothing wrong with celebrating Jesus.

God made it very clear, Not to worship him as the Pagans Worship their God's.
What you basically doing is justifying "compromise" Making up scenarios to go against his very word...
    Deuteronomy 12:29‭-‬32 NKJV
“When the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘HOW DID these NATIONS SERVE THEIR gods? I also will do likewise.’ YOU SHALL NOT WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD IN THAT WAY; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.
Conscience does not supercede the very word of God. We don't get to pick and choose which of God's rules we can break to satisfy pagan traditions of man.
If one is led by the Holy Spirit, they don't justify disobedience to God.
