He contacted Naomi first and said "You are the leader of the pack and if you do it, the rest will do it" That's how he got all the extraordinary women in his video. Only George.
It was a common thought, that George Michael wanted to be recognized as a serious artist & not just eye candy, so not appearing in this video, and being one of his highest selling tracks, proved his point.......it was literally was his way to break away from the stereotype the industry had boxed him in.....For me, George Michael has one of the most soulful voices, that can touch parts of us, we didn't even know existed 🥰 ***Loved your Reaction*** 🥰
George once said: Good thing about beautiful girls he can use them in his video so he doesnt have to appear.:-) george was the very first with PRAYING FOR TIME that dared NOT TO BE IN his video and if you ask me one of the best videos EVER.
True- but, the male models in this video were huge in the industry. John Pearson- sitting in the chair- was literally everywhere in the 90’s modeling for Ralph Lauren and Perry Ellis. Scott Benoit- hanging upside down and scratching his rear- was the face of Versace in 1990. Mario Sorrenti- turning light off and on - went on to become one of the best known fashion photographers of the 2000’s ( and also dated Kate Moss ). But- they were really nothing in popularity compared to their female counterparts. This video solidified the decade of the supermodel. The ladies also got paid about 5 times more than the men did for the video- and the guys had to fight to get paid at all for a day of reshoots.
Hey Pancake! Glad to see that your delving more into George Michael's music. This single was from his 2nd solo album and it was abit of a departure from his first. It is my favorite album of his. It was more "mature" hence, the video of him destroying the "Faith" symbols and anything having to do with Wham. He even added "90" to differentiate from Wham's single also called, "Freedom". At the time he was not happy with being perceived as a "Pop" artist and all the expectations required of one. Image, hit radio, generic, pop songs etc..and he was also at a crossroads in his personal life regarding his sexuality. He didn't come out at the time and of course there was the record company. They wanted another "Faith" album. This 2nd album didn't meet expectations for them because of it's more "grown up" sound. "Freedom" pretty much says it all. He refused to be in any of the videos as a protest. I believe he wanted everyone to take him seriously as a singer/songwriter who has something to say. Hence the album, "Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1" Listen to the whole album and you will hear the difference. There is no "Pop radio hit" that record companies wanted to promote. All ballads. George Michael was such a gifted talent. Taken to early from us. Alot of the songs I have recommended are in this album. I hope you enjoy it.🎶
Thank you so much for the insight! I love that George fought for his right to be the artist he wanted to be. I’ve heard from a lot of legends, Mariah Carey being one, about the horrors of controlling record labels and executives at the time.
@@PancakeMarshmallowDude At the time I believe he and Prince have been getting pressured by their record companies. It is ashame how artists back then didn't have the rights to their image and creativity. The demands of "staying on top", public & media appearances and tours to promote album sales etc. is very stressful. Today it's so different for up and coming new artists. Anyone can use social media to promote their talent and creativity and they are more savy when it comes to copyrights too.
Another context for this video... George had to release a video due to a contract stipulation, so he said he would not be in it. After all, it was a song that was calling out MTV as a bad influence.
So, so happy you revisited this video!! Fantastic reaction. You MUST reaction to George Micheal with Queen (LIVE) Somebody to Love at the Freddie Mercury tribute!! You will truly see his charisma and range. It will give you chills. 🔥🔥🔥
I remember when this video (and Faith) was on MTV every 30 minutes :-) It's a great song and an impeccable video. The guys are gorgeous but not famous :-)
Duran Duran’s Girl Panic is another fantastic supermodel filled video to check out. It features Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, Helena Chrisensen, and Yasmin Le Bon (Simon’s gorgeous wife). 🔥🔥
Great reaction. This is definitely a video that needs some context. The song needs context. Makes the lyrics so much more poignant. He certainly did tell it like it is. I am pretty sure those male models were the cream of the crop for the day as well, but the ladies were everywhere in the 90s. They were in every ad, every magazine, usually dating big name actors or musicians, they hung out together and were somewhat of a squad (maybe not all, but for sure 3 or 4 of them. I don't know any of the guys names. Off the top of my head, I see Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the curly haired blonde. I think, and this isn't verified, just my take on it, that the models were used to symbolize George being used an "object" because of his looks. Maybe the shadow element has something to do with that? Wanting his art and musical talent to overshadow his appearance? Interesting...all these gorgeous people and you never really get a close, unhindered look at them! Hmm.
Tatiana Patitz is the blonde. The all graced the cover of British Vogue in 1990- which is where George got the idea of them being in the video. Christy, Linda and Naomi were known as “the trinity”.
Those girls were superstars those days. To be honest I remembered their names pretty fast. Especially Naomi is and was known for her arrogant sometimes psycho behavior. But she's hot anyway. Nevertheless the song is pretty cool and George ? Well he is one of the best singers from the 80s/90s.
My favorite Naomi Campbell music video performance is in Michael Jackson’s In the Closet video. It’s directed by Herb Ritts (also did Madonn’a Cherish video) and its is mesmerizing.
Hands down one of the most iconic videos of the decade and a personal favorite of mine. It really did change the game in both fashion and music. Linda Evangelista said years later, “When people would come up and say they recognized me it was never about my magazine covers- it was always about George’s video. I’ll never forget that.” P.S.- Claudia Schiffer was also asked to participate, but her agent flatly said “No”. Getting all these women booked for a single job through an agency when they were contracted under different agencies was no small feat. But- George Michael made it happen.
Love your reaction 😊 George had a genius concept to use the 5 hottest supermodels at the time from a Vogue cover shoot, as a way to not be in the video and get away from the image he'd created. Have you done reactions to Faith and Father Figure? I've heard you mention them but can't find them in the search 🙏
It was great to see you re visit this video. And its so cool that you get the level of direction here, David Fincher was like a God to me when i was studying graphic design. He is just a master of visual art. If you search for all the videos directed by him in the 90s youll find out that some of the best stuff was directed by him. The Rolling Stones - love is trong, and Madonna - Oh father, those are some good ones by David 😉
💙 those aren’t just any models of course! Lol! Don’t look for too much meaning in the video, this is peak 90s editorial culture. Fashion for fashion sake. Isn’t it great!🤣💙
The model thing...sometimes I think that that was his way of obscuring sexual orientation, or even being more inclusive. Back in thenday inclusivity was not a thing in the mainstream public. It is really unsatisfying to not see him singing his song, even though it was beautifully directed.
Watching your videos it’s like a cure for depression! I swear if god everything you said about the video or anything related I’m laughing my ass of! You are a gem!! 💎🫶🏻💕

I think the tea kettle symbolized his feelings that were kept inside and simmering.

I really miss George 🖤
I’ve only really gotten to know him and his music very recently, but I miss him too! 🥲
Linda Evangelista also made the famous quote regarding the supermodels of the 90’s: “We don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.”
"Too Funky" revisits the use of famous models of the era. Great tune too.
Probably one of my favourite from George Michael !
Still so good!
No, the male models weren't household names like the female supermodels at the time. Naomi looks amazing in this video

I know John Pearson continued modeling as he matured, and still looks great. Why didn't I get any of that DNA?!?!
