Not a single invention but industrial agriculture which includes the use of petro-chemical fertilizers, pesticides, tractors, and harvesting combines deserves a mention. In 1900 half the population grew their own food and all food was grown by hand or with the aid of draft animals. Little had changed in agriculture for thousands of years until the green revolution happened in the 20th century. Famines used to kill more people than wars but by the end 20th century famines had largely been eradicated from the planet. Few people work the land or grow their own food anymore. Of all the inventions this probably had the biggest on the average person. It freed us being tied to the land and allowed for a quadrupling of the human population. Likely you wouldn't be alive today playing on the internet if there wasn't enough food to eat. The next time you eat something you didn't grow yourself be sure to thank industrial agriculture.
    This should be NUMBER 1.

The internet was actually invented by DARPA in the late 1960s. First e-mails were sent in the 70s. There was a pretty big hobbyist internet in the 1980s with Compuserve and Prodigy. In 1989 there were 1 million online users. The modern high speed internet that everyone knows about rolled out in the mid 90s but there was an internet long before that.

The 20th century is what fascinates me. It had radical changes in almost every aspect of human society. Significant changes came unlike any other century before that. I am so glad the Internet is on the top of the list. I can't do without the Internet. A century of innovation and beginning to live longer as a result of penicillin and more vaccines. Billions dreamed of flying prior to 1903, and I am glad it's been a dream come true for a little more than a century. The computer should be ranked at second place. I am glad life has become easier and better as a result of what happened in the 20th century in the inventions.

The description of the internet has a few technical errors. The internet came out about 30 years before the world wide web and remains much larger than the WWW (thus the Dark Web). The WWW was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 (he also invented the HTML markup language). This allowed for anyone to be able create and access web pages without having to remember the IP addresses. The original WWW DNS server was hosted by Steve Jobs on his NEXT computers.
Also to the individual below complaining about Cars being left out, they were invented in the 1800''s and therefore do not qualify for this list.

I wonder what the top inventions of history would be. It's kinda hard to rank something as world-changing as the Internet against things like cars, fire, or the wheel, all of which arguably had the same if not an even bigger impact.

Vaccum cleaners and microwaves, but no rockets / space vehicles to deliver the satellites???
I'd go back to the 1970s and "Connections" by James Burke for the one missing invention that should be on the list. In his book/ TV series, Burke outlined how the most crucial inventions came to be: the aircraft, rockets, television, the computer, the nuclear bomb, the telephone, plastics, and the modern production line - which makes it possible to produce everything we have around us.

What I don't get, why is it that 'Hoover style' vacuum cleaners with the bag/motor mounted on the handle are still so common place in the US ?
In Europe you will not find those, other than the smaller battery powered types.
I mean, they seem to be so cumbersome, heavy, and very inconvenient on stairs.
