    In my first job, out of college, my manager admitted to me that I was doing the work of a person 2 levels higher. But he couldn't do anything because I didn't have enough "experience" (years working) and HR wouldn't care that I was actually doing the work at that level. Changed jobs soon after & got a HUGE increase in salary.

      Its funny coz I had an opposite bad experience. Kept getting promoted and became Director at a very young age. But company was too small to pay me appropriately and I had difficulty finding another company that would hire for such high roles with such low “years” of experience. Left anyways but it was touuuugh.

      After almost 10 years at a big tech company ('95-'05) I heard similar nonsense from my manager during my "annual review." He said I was doing great work but based on my title and its hr defined salary range, he couldn't do more for me at that time. I quit less than a month later. Started my own consulting business and have been successful and happy ever since. If you're capable and motivated, working for someone else will never be completely satisfying. I'm now what I call fake-retired. I'm too young to officially retire and draw any retirement benefits, but I rarely work any more. I only take clients which I find interesting and lucrative.

      @@DeathnoteBB my friend worked for a US consulting firm that helps foreign corps looking to establish offices in the US. She told me the gleam in European executives' eyes when it dawned on them how much worse they can treat their American employees made her so sick she left the job. Corporations only treat their employees as well as they are forced to.

    Ouch... I remember once I left a company due to burnout. They replaced me with two *departments*. DON'T do the long hours and unpaid overtime. Not worth it.

      Unpaid overtime is crazy. It's illegal in Canada to not pay overtime over 44 hours in a week. Unless the work is on-call or salaried.

    The fact that Derek does 4-5 jobs IS the reason why he wasn’t promoted. If moved into a management position, he would only be doing 1 job. Then they’d have to fill 4-5 other jobs. Anyone in senior positions that take one responsibilities because of being short staffed are almost non-existent because hard workers are by design not promoted.

      Promoting someone does not automatically mean to management. Juniors can be promoted, if needed even to senior. You increase the pay, benefits, etc and let them do the jobs they already did. Now you don't need a replacement at all.

      My first corporate job I did in one day 3x’s what everyone else did. When I applied for a promotion I was told, “you didn’t get the job because we are worried you are *too organized* for a management position.” I realized then and there I would never be promoted because I was too valuable in my current position. They would have to hire three people to fill my role if I left.
      So I left.

      Our area manager, who was one of the few really good managers, took my work colleague aside after she was knocked back for promotion. She told her, I have never worked so hard as when I did your job, don't let them tell you it gets harder the further up you go, it doesn't. You should have got that job so what you need to do now is leave, go somewhere else at the higher grade, then come back above that grade in about 2 years. She followed her advice and did exactly that.
      Our manager also got her progression right to the very top btw. She was what a leader should be.

      Years ago I asked an upper manager what my chances of promotion were. I was told I was too valuable in the field. I then said, “So you’re telling me I have to be useless to be promoted?” He stopped, looked at me, and didn’t say a word.

      also you have to show value in other things that are not your job. through networking, sucking up, and giving credit to others in the club and Maybe they'll choose you. or you're just not a fit for the culture

    I changed jobs about every 2 years. Every time with a pay increase. I retired at 50.

    That was me back in 2010, my supervisor told me i had made myself indispensable and they didn't want to promote me, I found a new job and gave my notice to the big chief, his jaw actually dropped!

      A common problem, the people who are good at their job are too valuable in their current position to be promoted.
      I’ve had the same problem in every job I’ve done,
      when I was a craftsman I was repeatedly denied promotion because I was the best worker they had so other feckless people got the promotion.
      So I quit the company and got a managers/Engineers position elsewhere.
      I then became their top engineer and manager and watched other useless people get promoted while at the same time I was given their work to do.
      In the end I walked out and had 6months off with overloaded stress and they had to restructure the company to cover the work I had been doing.
      When I came back I took a senior designer role with less duties and more pay.
      [I now get paid for what I know rather than what I do]
      It’s is only when you are prepared to quit and walk out that you get treated with any fair recognition.

Aka, if you are getting the good results and "can't get the promotion yet qualify for it", then you should receive the bump in pay and benefits with accordance to your competence.

    This is the only tip you need to know in life.
    Changing companies is the only way to truly get a pay increase and a position you want. Don't be afraid to leave for a better position. They did a study on this and found almost every person who has a high paying job hasn't been with the company for very long. They just hop between companies getting incrementally more money and better positions once they find out they will never get a promotion at their current job.
    You can also use this to leverage a forced raise by showing your employer you have a job offer at that pay and demand they match it or you'll leave for it.

      I did this and it worked. I was doing shipping/receiving for $15/hr. I showed them an offer for $60k/year to drive a fork lift. They didn't give me 60K but they did give me $50K. I love the job but could not afford to keep going with 2-3% raises when the economy went up 9-11%!!!

      3 years seems to be a sweet spot, you got pay increment, and experience, after that, hop off to a new one
      There's no such thing as company loyalty

      There’s no point getting a matching offer. You already have that offer. They better beat it or you walk.
      Also the offer you get outside is your starting pay. They’re happy to have you there. A matching offer is you dragging your employer reluctantly up the pay scale. They’re not going to see it as the start of anything.

      @@amspook agreed. 2 years or less works early in your career (first 5-10 years) because you are quickly learning and usually at that point what’s holding you back from most jobs are just YoE.
      Once you’re past that 10 year mark, you are usually leading/making major impacts in multi-year projects so 3-4 years in a role is expected or it could look like you may be job hopping for no good reasons. Also the higher up you climb the IC or management ladder the more difficult promotions become.

    I didn't wait that long, and after a little over one year I found better job and gave my notice. That's when they finally offered a promotion and increase to keep me from leaving, but then it was too late. Management had to now find someone totally new and start over from scratch. Brilliant.

      Yep, NEVER take the counter offer. For one it just shows they could have promoted you or given you that pay rise if they had wanted to. Secondly they're just making the offer because they know they need you and if you take it they will work to bring in someone else to replace you and in a year or so they will fire you or push you out.

      @@asmita2318 yeah, that how it works but not how it should be. My salary should be a function of my productivity and the cost of my replacement.
      As I keep doing the same job, I get better at it, I bring more value to the business thus I should participate in the value added to the business, especially if finding a replacement is gonna be risky and costly.
      The alternative is starting a management career, but I'm not a manager. I am good at my job, and management is a totally different job that I'm probably worse at and I don't even like.

      Did the management routine once, and it sucked. Ever after that torturous experience I just wanted more pay and to rise in the technical career path. But that always seems to attract the attention of upper management dweebs that can't understand why you don't want to follow in their footsteps. Because they can't understand they'll find ways to make your job miserable if they can't convince you that "maybe this time being manager will be great!"
      "You'd be great at this! You already have all the skills and everybody likes you! As a bonus you'd get to relocate to LA! Doesn't that sound great? California!" Exec couldn't comprehend that if my job relocated to LA I'd quit immediately. They got even more perplexed to find out it was a common sentiment throughout the company - even people already working in the LA facility wanted to relocate.

    I’ve been Derek a few times. One time my boss’s boss commented that I had been up for promotion several times, but it was turned down. He said that I actually deserved it, so I asked him if he would promote me now, belatedly. He looked surprised and said, “No”. A few years later I quit. About 6 months later 2 of my former supervisors were given 90 days to find a job at another company or be fired. Another 6 months later one of my successors at the previous employer quit because he said management didn’t support him. Actually he simply couldn’t accomplish what I had. There have been several other instances where I was recognized as the senior person in that function, but not necessarily paid appropriately. After my departure the others in the group quit or were laid off, including the manager.

      I'm getting that too. I've been told I'm so close to being promoted, yet people I literally trained were promoted to my current position.
      Never train anyone if you have a unique skillset. Refuse at all costs. They'll only replace you.

    I resigned once and they asked what it would take to keep me. I said a time machine. Go back 5 years, give me the authority to do what I was going to have to take on anyway (like I had asked when hired), and get the goofballs who had no idea what they were doing out of the way. Forget about titles and money, just let me do the job. They tried to double my salary. I walked anyway. Bad management is like a bad wife. It will never get better.

      They only tried to double your salary to keep you temporarily whilst they found someone who'd be the old you for cheaper. They did this because it would cost them less than losing you on the spot and scrambling to fill the gap on zero notice whilst losing money by the second until the gap was filled.
      It wasn’t about making things better for you.

    First professional job didn’t give me a raise for two years. The owner finally raised my pay when he was desperate after he had to fire our incompetent administrator. In year three, I ended up applying for jobs on and off. After no substantial raises, I found a job paying 20% more in year five and bounced. The owner was just shocked when I gave him my two weeks notice and left after literally two weeks to the day. Like, what do you expect? You consistently underpaid me. Even if you couldn’t have afforded to pay more, you could have given flexibility or time off. Glad I left that mess.

    I bent over backwards, jumped over rings of fire to get promoted in my previous role....only to resign after that. I was doing the job of 3 people at the time.
    Managed to get into a new company at a more senior position and throughout my time here, I managed to get pretty high salary increments because my boss recognised my potential. I wont be leaving anytime soon because I feel appreciated

      This is the downside of being too competent and effective at your job - you'll get stuck there as long as you're willing to tolerate it. In my long career in companies both big and small, I have almost never seen a truly competent worker promoted into management. I have seen legions of goldbricks and arse-kissers make it up the ladder, though.

    Worked for a company for 7 years. Asked for a promotion for 3. Was given constructive advice on how to improve. I took it to heart and worked my ass off. Over the years was still given the run-around about why they couldn’t promote me. The had the audacity to act like I was the asshole for putting in my two week notice when I had enough. Best decision ever made.

      It was a new one on me though when the company I just quit from didn't promote me, demoted me and expected that I'd do all the work having just been demoted so they could save a few cents an hour in salary.
      I'm personally laughing my ass off every time my sister-in-law goes there and sees that the department is more or less completely closed due to a lack of anybody actually there to work. They could have just paid the money, let me have my promotion and I wouldn't have just walked off the job and left them in the lurch.
      Sometimes, these things are so stupid that it's absolutely embarrassing. It's costing them a rather considerably amount of money because they wanted to make a point. Me, I'm going to be fine, I've got plenty of savings and plenty of better prospects from the skills I developed and the company won't benefit from.

      This is the toughest lesson for anyone just starting out to learn. But the sooner you learn this and understand the situation for what it is, the better off you'll be. It won't stop them trying to take advantage of you, but you'll be able to spot the signs a lot sooner.

    What was said to my mom 30+ years ago still rings true today- switch jobs every few years to get pay increases.
    I'm currently trying to get an elevated raise (not just annual COL raise)... My team asked for a meeting with higher ups to make our case. Our manager said they were trying. After waiting 5 flipping months, I finally went to his boss's boss.... It was very evident that my manager never followed through. Now a team member is leaving. I'm currently looking and applying elsewhere.
    The backlash I got for going above my manager too. I've worked with him for 7 years and knew all along he wasn't the best at management though a good boss. Now I realize after my team really called up on him, he dropped the ball so damn hard.
    His boss two steps above him saw the writing on the wall though when I asked him. Too little too late that a 5 year employee is leaving.

    This is why people hop jobs and companies see that as a bad thing. People wouldn't "job-hop" if it was profitable to be loyal. Statistics show that in most fields you can increase your wage more by moving around every 2 to 3 years vs being loyal to a single company. People like stability, they don't want to jump around from job to job. Loyalty just isn't rewarded.

    I’m in exactly this position right now, except I haven’t found a new job yet so I haven’t resigned.
    Was told by a manager I didn’t have enough experience for the senior position. Ironically, I have more experience than the manager herself. So yeah. It’s just a matter of time before I find that brilliant new job that will probably double my salary and have me doing a role (that includes public facing elements) what my manager incorrectly thinks I’m not experienced enough for.

    Yeah, definitely feeling this one. I make good money but it hasn’t kept up with inflation and even the most recent “generous” annual pay raise of 5% has left me $28k/yr below average market for my job and duties. It did not come close to meeting the changes in cost of living. The games senior management played with the promised promotion basically took $6k out of my pocket over the last 6 months. I am looking for the right opportunity to move to and when I do my employer will get all the same courtesy and kindness they have shown. In the mean time I am voting all my shares and encouraging all other employees and former employees to vote down the proposed compensation package for the C suite. Why should they get something they will not provide to the actual people doing the work.

    My former lecturer told us this when we asked about employment advice once we graduated...
    He said, " go wherever opportunity takes you then apply yourself and learn as much as you can and be the best you can be. If the environment or system is designed in such a way that you can't be rewarded for your hard work then leave for another opportunity. If you perform exceptionally then you deserve exceptional compensation and if the employer pays mediocre compensation they they deserve a mediocre employee"

      exactly because of the reason that was also stated, because if they promote you, they'd then have to fill in your position, which generally means a reshuffle all the way down.
      But for some reason, they think that having in-house knowledge run off is less efficient than spending weeks having to hire outside, then needing them to have months to be properly efficient in their role

    One of the worst fates is to work for a manager who believes the World owes him/her a living, and you are The Meal Ticket who must deliver on that debt. You’re kept back because that manager NEEDS you to maintain his/her job. The harder you work, the more you must NOT be promoted, to provide your manager that job security. And remember, you have years ahead of you when you can build for yourself, once the manager’s need for you has been fulfilled. (Or, to quote one of these execrable people: “I need this; you can always rebuild.”)

    I worked at an engineering firm where the mentality was if you promote someone they have to learn their new job plus you have to fill their old job, so you've effectively created two positions. If they just quit, you only have to fill one position.

      This was the mentality at my place, they would rather get rid of someone than promote them, and then get someone new in to fill the empty position (who then takes two years to work out what the hell they are doing).
      I wangled myself a permanent home based tech support role and now realistically do about 5 hrs work a week (plus whatever Teams meetings I'm invited to) and feel absolutely zero guilt for taking advantage of them after they've shafted me and all my colleagues and ex colleagues over the last 15 years. 10 years to retirement, but if I can hang on for 5 that might be enough as first pension kicks in then, or I'll take VR if there's another tranche and have done with it!

    Yeah, this is exactly what happened at my old place of work. I worked there 7 years total. After the 2nd year I continuously asked for a promotion or pay raise with nothing.
    One I made a more lateral switch in the company, I got a slight pay bump, they had to hire 5 extra people. Those people sucked at the job besides one and always complained they were underpaid. After a year in my newer role I applied for head of department as I met all the criteria. I got passed up for someone in a totally unrelated position that knew nothing lol. A few months later I quit and they made a huge fuss about it. They even said I had no loyalty. 😂 I get paid about double what I did at that place and work about half the hours now. In the end I got what I deserved. That place was trash and I am sad I wasted so much time there

    I’ve worked with and for people like Derek. The last one that was in charge of our entire division was replaced by an ever expanding umbrella of management. There must be 14 people doing his old position with goofy titles now. Rather genius really, the guy at the top has created such a buffer between himself and being fired

    I remember when I worked at a place for 3 years and they brought in 2 managers with less experience to be my boss. I didn’t care because I was in school but they told me that they never promote anyone because they didn’t want people upset when a coworker got promoted instead of themselves. So if they needed a supervisor or manager they hired someone outside the company to do it

      Don't threaten to leave. Just leave if you're going to. If you threaten to leave, they'll look for a reason to shit-can you. And if you threaten to leave and they actually promote you, there will be ill will directed towards you after the promotion. Unfortunately, that's just how it works.

      I came to say something similar as the person above me. Just get another job, then give your 2 weeks notice. If they want you, they will offer that raise and extra pay. If they don't, then you have a new job and you can leave.

    My daughter was in this kind of situation. She quit two years ago and has a job. She likes where she’s treated well and gets regular period raises. The old company just went out of business. 😂

    Definitely happens. Years ago I moved to another city and found out I was replaced by 3 people.
    Recent job our team was reduced from 6 to 3. Colleagues resigned & were never replaced. Fun times.

    My previous workplace used to have performance based raise, and they'd always find out something to make sure I'm barely meeting expectations, until my favourite manager actually appreciated my experience when he came into the role and knew to ask me if there was something from before he joined like an obscure procedure.
    Trouble is, big management a couple of months afrer my pay raise decided to put everyone on the same level of pay, so all of my hard work went to waste and I made the same as someone who'd only joined a week ago.

    Jobs are not careers anymore. They are building blocks. Your current position is preparation for the job you should have already applied for.
    That way, you're maximizing your earning potential and cutting these types out of your life. (The next company would LOVE to give you a raise to work above your position.
    And if your dead set on being abused... at LEAST apply for higher paying work just so you can force them to pay to keep you.

      Worse than that. I had been doing that for about two years and asked why I hadn't been advanced in salary grade. The answer was, "Well, you're already doing the work of someone two grades above you, and we can't promote you unless we can show that we're going to be increasing your job responsibilities." Yeah. Two months later, I left. Fuggem.

    This happens probably more frequently than it should. Stories of hard working people going above and beyond because it is in our DNA. Unfortunately, companies may leverage this to their own advantage. To be sure, it is not “the company” but individuals in the company with selfish intentions and compliant senior management that create these situations.

    I was at a place for 12 years…running 3 departments and finally quit because a new supervisor was making me fight to do my job. First two people they hired to replace me quit in under a month and they ended up having to hire 3 people to do what I was doing.

    Companies ARE NEVER loyal to employees, and will screw you over in an instant if it suits them. It doesn't matter if your supervisor is the nicest person in the world. The company exists to make a profit, and employees are simply a means to that end.
    Do not set yourself up in a vulnerable position bending over backwards for inadequate compensation. And certainly NEVER sacrifice your personal life or well-being for a job. A job is a means to pay bills so that you can actually enjoy life. Don't waste your fleeting time on this Earth or with your loved ones (whose time is also fleeting) for an employer that only sees YOU as a means to profit.

    When i left a city job, i did so stating "youll need 2 workers in my place. Ill be much better paid at my new job designed for 1 person." I was wrong about the city. It took 3. Appreciate what hard workers you have. Pay us well, we'll likely stick around. Loyal to the check.

    Fun Fact: after growing up in the USA and now back in Canada, my birthplace, my main experience in Canada with people like this is that theyr'e BRITS. They LEAVE the "class system" in the UK, jump into management (something they seem to be really good at in self promotion), THEN CREATE the same "class system attitude" in Canada back home where they LEFT the UK because of it's ...........class system!! Hilarious, in a way. Give me a German or American boss any time.

They keep firing mngt and promoting fam. mem. to their job but fam. mem. has to do all the jobs because they’re not hiring replacements. Fam. mem. is now looking for another job. Wonder how many they’ll have to hire to replace her/him. So American/German companies are no better.

      As much as I hate to say this but it totally depends if your manager is a upjumped business management student or a "self-taught" manager that is familiar with the work you are delivering/had to do to get to the position you are currently at. Its funny how you can distinguish someone from working in an office as a student or if someone worked in one of the bonebreaking jobs such as retail, construction or customer service. Most of the time completely different mannerisms. One will squeeze you out like a lemon and toss you away, the other will have a higher chance to be rather humane towards you.

    Sounds like myself. The cool thing is I got seriously injured while performing my numerous jobs that they had to put 7, yes, 7 people to fill the positions while I recover. My supervisor is both dreading and rejoicing, the day I return. There is going to be a conversation on my pay.

    I was Derek for five years, they took me so much for granted that they started giving me jobs just to eff with me...I guess they were bored. When they announced a salary freeze, I knew they were lying and I just started working longer and I got accused of milking the clock...I suspected that they were trying to get me to quit or fire me for any reason that they could find. The disrespect went too far one day and I sat down to formulate my two weeks notice letter and waited until the end pf business on Saturday night.
    I was off on Sunday and I ignored any and all calls that day.
    No one dared confront me about it, my boss couldn't even look me in the eye or wish me luck.
    I went back a year and a half later to say hello to some long time customers there, but many of the same workers were there and they acted as if I quit on them. Many of them are still there over 20 years later. Go where you are celebrated, not simply tolerated.

    I was working for a major bank years ago, I was at the associate level and I was the only one doing my job at in the US. My counterpart in Canada was a vice president. After I left that company they had problems filling my role.

    My last boss, when I told him I was job hunting, informed me that I'd been overdue for a raise for about four months, and that he'd postponed it because I had "efficiency problems."
    What was his example of this problem? I was usually the last one to leave the office during the week.
    I was his receptionist. I was receiving. I was the order tech. I handled problems with vendors. And I was the only one doing these jobs.
    He never raised the first concern until that day.
    The new job is so much nicer.

    If you think about promotion, just, the moment you asked for, start to actively seek another job at level (or even above) you think you have right to be promoted to. Bc loyalty at workplace is usually abused and punished by bosses. Just do it and see what will happens faster, promotion or new, better job in new place. Oh, and NEVER do a work of more than one person, it will decrease your chances to be moved to better position, bc it is too handy for management to have such a slave.

    I would like to see a video on the job performance review... "we love that you always show up, never late, dont complain, get along with everyone" and you get a 3 out 5 review. Which means less of a raise than "market" value. And they wonder why people quit all the time. We have a revolving staff door.

    Here's my advice. If you're in a position for at least 2 years and haven't been offered a promotion, switch jobs. No sense in staying in that position year after year just to get a 1-5% "raise" each year. Even if you can get 10-20%, which is still pretty good. Switching jobs/getting promoted can easily net you 30-50% more pay if you do it right. In 5 years, I've nearly quadrupled my income and I plan on doing the same the next 5 years. I'd be ok with 2-3 times my current income since I'll be already be in the six figures range. But I'll keep going.

    It even happens in the military, too. I work so hard to be a good communication, High Frequency (HF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Ground to Air [aircraft] a year before leaving the USMC I received the Inspector General highest marks for (my) department number One😊 at Camp Pendleton CA.the communication unit not so.😮
