I used to make 45 dollars per horse to braid manes and tails at horse shows which paid my entry fees. Beautiful and efficient job on such a long mane. Your horse is beyond beautiful. Watching from California
As someone with long hair, I can attest to the fact that clean, slightly damp hair is the easiest to braid nicely and the most comfortable long term. Very nice work on the mane.
When people started asking if you'd do a video on this, you seemed a bit reluctant to do one. So I started looking up "how to" videos on RUclips. Each one was a little different from the other, but all used thread, and the end result never looked as good as yours. Thanks for showing how you do this, Matt. Your method makes a much nicer looking rosette and seems easier to remove when ready.. ❤
You did an amazing job on his mane. This is a great tutorial for horses with long, thick manes. Thank you for showing us this process. He is absolutely stunning. ❤
In america we call those scallop braids, brought a western pony to a dressage show and got so many complements on them! I leave the braid between the rosettes a little loose to make sure they can comfortably stretch for extension/free walk, and it may not be the traditional look (or even acceptable at higher levels? idk) but it can make a trail horse look baroque!
But SO many RUclipsrs say they have to keep on taking time off from RUclips for their mental health. That's horse people and all others too. So I'm just happy when they do post, and I enjoy them immensely.
I love to see how your horses interact with you. I love how much they love being around you and their personalities. You have amazingly beautiful and sweet horses. Thank you for showing them.
I currently live an hour plus away from my horses and due to traffic and a physical disability I cannot see them often anymore so I've been using you and Jesse's videos as a kind of therapy. I mostly trail ride and putter around on my gaited horse, but I resonate with the love you two have for your horses so much
Wow Matt I have always been fascinated by how neat horses looked in rosettes but never knew how to do them. Thank you so very much for showing us. He is a stunning boy!
The transformation is very successful, even if I like Emporio's long mane, but it's not practical if it's windy, hence the long braids. For a show, a competition or just for fun, rosettes are a great alternative. Some riders may find the tips on how to change the appearance of the neck using optical illusion useful. Thank you for your demonstration and your detailed explanations, they will be of real interest to many people. Emporio is gorgeous and I also thank him for his patience 👌👏😍💗
That makes him look so beautiful, I see what you mean about how it shows off his neck shape. Thank you Matt. He certainly seemed to be enjoying being your model for this demonstration and getting some extra pats from you. ❤❤
There is a tool that you can get (probably on amazon), that uses the same concept as a needle and thread, but much larger of course. You put the hair through the “eye”, then you run the “needle” up through the top of the braid, the hair follows. My granddaughter has very long curly hair. She loves to make fancy plaiting . When I got that flexible tool for braids and ponytails, we just whisked right along, and it never disturbed the hair at the top of the braid. It will definitely save you time! No matter, your plats are beautiful-well done 👍❗️
So cool to see this all over now. My sister invented this style braid over 18 years ago. There was only the scallop or French braid for long manes and she wanted to have the look of buttons for her Morgan dressage horse. A tip I use to make them tidy and to struggle less pulling them thru is using a plastic braid pull thru tool where you just twist the end of the hair and put that in the needle like hole then pull it thru ! Also can do hunter looking braids with this method
I've often wondered HOW ??? R U able to guide, teach, train & establish a loving & respectful relationship with all your horses ? Every animal you own is sheer perfection. Now I know how & why that is .. 💥 U R PERFECT💥 !!! 😂 I love your attention to detail & your desire for perfection in everything you do! It's what makes Matt magnificent! ❤❤❤ (re: Jesse's update on Antares surgery - no fair saying his video was too detailed & too long ! 🙄🤭😆 when you or Jesse are teaching or explaining, NO video is too detailed or too long ...) !!! ❤️💜❤️
This was very interesting to see. Thanks for showing us your rosette platting technique. If I had a horse, I could totally do that. 😅 I have to admit I do love a long mane on a horse. I imagine having the mane long would also help with pest control. Emporio looked pretty chill during this whole process. I can’t believe his colour transformation from when you first bought him. Enjoy the Paris Olympics!
I recently picked up a volunteering position at a riding charity and had to teach & test kids on these horse things. This video really helped polishing my knowledge! Maybe I will get the children to try this plaiting technique x
Back in the Dark Ages, when I was doing braids, I had a little loop made of thin wire that I would push down through the top of the braid, tuck the end of the braid through the loop and then pull the wire with the end of the braid back up through the top of the braid. Way smoother and faster than trying to grab the end with your fingers!
Matt, when pulling the braid through maybe a rat tail comb would make it easier? Great job as always, of course I would expect no less from you. Thanks for sharing, always good to see you.🐴👍❤️
There is a cheap little hair tool that you can use to pull the hair more easily back through the base of the braid. It’s essentially a flexible loop and the handle comes to a point. You put the hair through the loop and use the point to make the hole where you wish to put the hair through and pull the tool all the way through the hole which in turn pulls the hair you put through the loop with it. Also if you would like to avoid hair breakage I would not use plastic elastics like you had there. Spend the money on the little ones that are made not to get stuck on the hair. It’s also more comfortable to not have the elastic pulling. Another thing I would do to make the style still neat and proper but more comfortable would be to start with a pony tail braid that tight like you prefer pull it through then cut the elastic that you initially put on for the pony tail off so you don’t see it. The hair style will still be secure but it won’t be so tight that it hurts. You have a very tolerant horse from a woman’s point of view the hairstyle the way you did it would definitely hurt. It’s also bad for the hair follicle to be pulled tight all the time. You will cause premature thinning of the hair which in some cases can cause bald patches.
Matt Harnacke...u NEVER brush a mane or tail from the top😳 u start at the bottom ends & work ur way up to the skin as u work out knots...u pull out less hair that way.😊
What an excellent detailed lesson. Thank you Matt! Most people rush through instructions for things, which ends up giving us very incomplete instructions!
Thanks Matt … that was really very interesting. Like you said, once you understand what you’re doing, it’s not that difficult. Those rosettes definitely suite Emporio. I hope you plan on letting Etro’s mane grow out … it was so sad when you hacked off his mane. Again … very interesting and thank for the tips! 🙏🙌✝️❤️🇨🇦
Hey! What a nice and detailed video! Just in case it can interest you, there are some kind of plastic rings that help you pull the end of the braid through the top of the mane to complete the rossete and it is quite easier than doing it with your bare hands. Of course everyone likes doing it differently, but I think it is a greta tool to try if you haven't done it yet!
Your bond with him is so special was so sweet him moving towards you for his pats. He has grown so much since that 3 year old baby in Spain. Thank you for the video I am use to a very short pulled mane from hunter/jumper braids which are totally different maybe even more time consuming.
I really enjoyed watching the process, I’ve always wondered how it was done and so neatly too! Emporio’s Brand is so Cool, it’s actually quite beautiful compared to some hideous ones that I’ve seen over the years. 👍😀
Matt they make a tool for this too it's a stick with a loop on the end. You would stick the stick through where you want to pull the hair through and stick the hair in the loop. They used to market it to girls for pony tails and other hair styles would would great for this too
A good tip is always start detangling the mane with your fingers then a brush and if you have a wide tooth comb to help detangle without braking hairs or yanking them out. Since I started doing it this way I have noticed a significant difference In my horses mane. Much healthier and fuller. Also helped with consistent and even hair growth. And incase your wondering if I do or don’t know what I’m talking about I have a 8 year old stallion PRE also a Tordillo color or Gray, more white than gray, but similar mane just maybe a half or a full foot longer.
Very interesting. Thanks for a very informative lesson. I do have one question since somebody asked for a rosette lesson. How long does it take to undo all the braids and get the elastics out? Back in my own long hair days, getting elastics out was the worst. Emporio looks wonderful and the hairdo really does make him more handsome. It's so nice to see you share your love and care for him. Hoping for more vlogs with you both soon. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Oh, and enjoy the Olympics....it's almost here🤩🤩🤩
Women have an apparatus we use to do that "end pull through the top of the braid" method. It's a long blunt needle type thing with a loop at one end. You put the end of the hair in the loop and work it through the top with the needle. We used them in the 90s, when that style was popular for women. They are still available, if interested.
I find that using a large rug hook that have a latch is easier to put all the hair through the opened area and it is much quicker and less work on the hands. I learned this through human hair braiding techniques and works very well when plaiting horses with thick manes.
I really enjoyed watching you go this Matt, very informative. Do you think it’s more comfortable for a horse to have the mane loose and in their face or this beautiful braid that stays out of their face. Just wondering. Great job.👏
If you have never felt the pain of a tight braid against the skin, it REALLY HURTS, especially after you take the braids out! Ouch. I wonder how much it hurts horses? Emporio is a gorgeous horse and the rosettes look amazing 🤩
Pulling hair through hair is something most girls learn quite young. When my hair was long, I used a plastic loop to pull my hair through a roll. Maybe that could help you. You might find a loop in the hair accessory dept. in your supermarket, or online. Amazon has them.
Used to keep my gelding’s mane like Chase’s was when you first brought him from Australia. Cooler in our part of the world (even 50+ years ago). When I come back for another life-still want to be horse mad. He looks gorgeous clipped.
Hi Matt that is great my horse is like Etro and when you took him on the weekend away at the Water Mill you had done a braid I had not seen before! Please can you show us this one too ! ❤ thank you Clare
1:59 The ghost of Unstable past! xxx Interesting video on horse hair plaits, how long did it take you to fully learn to do these competition rosettes? Being a guy with short hair, and without any sisters growing up with you, it must of taken some time. I used to try and plait my sisters hair, but I never knew what to do and watching my sister plait her really long hair without looking is strange to me.

As someone with long hair, I can attest to the fact that clean, slightly damp hair is the easiest to braid nicely and the most comfortable long term. Very nice work on the mane.
Emporio is the most gorgeous horse. It is clear that you two have a great relationship too -- so cute :)
I’ve never seen braids done like this! I always wondered how you made the horses manes look so good with so much hair!!!

❤So happy to see you again Matt, you have been missed,
I so wish you and Jesse would do weekly vlogs.

A million snuggles & kisses to the GREAT & ELEGANT EMPORIO for his patience, his tolerance & his respectful presence to his BabyDaddy Matt ! 💥💋💥👍💥
It’s so cute even to just see you in the stall with him, he’s so obviously how much he loves and trusts you 😊

This is FASCINATING! I have a horse with a very long mane, and this is exactly what I've been hoping to find. THANK YOU.

100% agree !!! ❤

He’s loving the pampering. Adorable ❤
You take such amazing care of all your horses I have to wonder of Emporio has ever had a dirty mane🙂❤️😍
He looks such a kind horse 😊
Heyy Matt so nice to see a new video again after a while!🎉❤

Thank you for making this video I always wondered how those pretty rosettes were done. Emporio is such a good stud!🐴💙
I just noticed…..I LOVE the narrow nose band on the halter!!
He’s such a good boy!! 💕
That was really great to see. I always wondered how these Rosettes were done. Thank you for the lesson! :-)

Matt would braid my hair better than a hair stylist 😂👌
I have two Morgans, one with a very long mane, and this technique is awesome!! , thanks! I will use this next time!
Very interesting procedure. Thank you for sharing.🐴
I really enjoyed watching you go this Matt, very informative. Do you think it’s more comfortable for a horse to have the mane loose and in their face or this beautiful braid that stays out of their face. Just wondering. Great job.👏
Imperious is so patient bless him
Nice, clear explanation. Thanks, Matt Mare S.
Hello! Love waking up to see this beautiful boy!
You’re the best ❤❤❤
I always use this method for my PRE mare, it’s amazing 🤩
Love your videos❤🐴
Thank you Matt for sharing how to do this. I'm sure you helped a lot of other individuals. Best always Rusty in Ok ❤😊
You can also place a small dowel rod in while braiding the base and use the gap to pull your tails through.
If you have never felt the pain of a tight braid against the skin, it REALLY HURTS, especially after you take the braids out! Ouch. I wonder how much it hurts horses? Emporio is a gorgeous horse and the rosettes look amazing 🤩
You are the nicest gentlest trainers ever- what do you think of Olympic medal winner Ms. Dujardin and her whipping of horses.
Dam what a beautiful horse 🎉🎉🎉
we never got paid and he is lovely and cheeky underneath - stunning horse Matt
Pulling hair through hair is something most girls learn quite young. When my hair was long, I used a plastic loop to pull my hair through a roll. Maybe that could help you. You might find a loop in the hair accessory dept. in your supermarket, or online. Amazon has them.
It boggles my mind that such a stunning creature exists. We don't deserve the beauty of horses.
Emperio is such a magnificent stallion
You need to get a Topsy Tail Tool, they are amazing and you will love it :) also love your videos x
Used to keep my gelding’s mane like Chase’s was when you first brought him from Australia. Cooler in our part of the world (even 50+ years ago). When I come back for another life-still want to be horse mad. He looks gorgeous clipped.
Very elegant!
Do you think the horse is bothered by having such tight braids all along his neck? If I wear ponytail all day end of the day my scalp hurts.
I love this horse and you explain thing so well Hottie ❤
Hi Matt that is great my horse is like Etro and when you took him on the weekend away at the Water Mill you had done a braid I had not seen before! Please can you show us this one too ! ❤ thank you Clare
