      I take away that the author isn't intending to argue they are bad (by bad I mean, not "fine") Instead I would argue he's suggesting they are הֶבֶל, translated as "vanity", but also meaning, "emptiness", "transitory" -- not permanent -- and "unsatisfactory". With this in mind, we can see that rather than being "bad", these things will just fail to fulfil us truly, they are "vain". We are made in GODs image, how could we be satisfied fully by things of the flesh ? -- instead we need a connection to GOD, that will truly satisfy you... I think we can see similar undertones of this message in the book of Job but that's a different story.
