How odd.... POS commentating yet the idents show C4 racing and I presume it is an SIS production.
That's right. SIS hired POS because they wanted to get rid of Robin Gray, who was senior racecourse commentator and therefore most big meetings were divided between him and Raleigh Gilbert. They had funny opinions about commentating at SIS headquarters: The likes of Robin Gray and John Hickman weren't good enough anymore, but instead of that lot, they gave us Dave Smith.... 😂
I highly doubt there is much substance to that. Gilbert got nowhere near the amount of big meetings on the flat than Gray or Hickman. Gray went on commentating for another dozen years and Hickman another 15. SIS in their early days did use seperate commentators from the course and on this occasion can only presume POS was invited by SIS, as Peter Bromley called the Derby for BBC Radio and GG for C4 that year.
