I bought a 54 New Yorker back in maybe '68. It needed brakes, tires and an exhaust system. I think I gave $40.00 for it. Fixed it up and drove it back and forth to college. It was geared pretty high so takeoff was a bit slow, but from about 30 on it really accelerated. The 2 speed Powerflite would stay in low to about 55 or 60 before it would shift, at full throttle. The old car would leap forward when it went into high gear. Don't ever remember getting passed on the highway if I didn't want to be passed.
Awsome ride,I have the deluxe model same year, it's been on the road now for about 3 years she's a beast,331 Hemi, just floats going down the highway...
What a Great Find! The New Yorker was a very important model to Chrysler for many years...I used to have a 53 New Yorker Two door sedan...331 Hemi...Great cars! Hope she gets saved!
@@herbiejettsgarage 60 Plymouth?!. That's the video I've been looking for. My father had a 1960 Sport Fury with the continental kit AND a 1960 Golden Commando.
I knew a guy back in the '80's that dragged one of these out of a field. It was still shiny. We put some gas in the carb and used a battery just long enough to turn it over. It had a 6 volt system and all we had was a 12 volt battery. It fired right up and ran on the generator. I don't know what he did with it. I moved across the country shortly after that. It had a four speed semi automatic tranny. I have no idea if that worked at all. Brings back some memories for sure.
The 53-54 mopars have never been highly regarded by many but I think they are awesome early 50s design! I currently am restoring a 53 Plymouth and its been a fun and interesting experience! Do you have any updates about this car? Would love to see more of it.
Cool car and great save. Following for updates. Motor doesn't look like a hemi to me as the spark plugs didn't appear to be in the center of thr valve covers. Hemi or not still would save it and enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing it run again
The early versions of the hemi had a long cover over the spark plugs running down the middle of the valve cover. This car has that cover. The spark plug cover, I believe, was eliminated on later versions.
@@bonniebairn844 NO LONG COVER!!! That's a POLY SPHERE ENGINE NOT a HEMI!!! No "Fire Dome V-8" on fender or Trunk or engine!!! It's GREEN too! Hemi's are HEMI ORANGE (RED)! If it's a 331 HEMI, WHERE'S THE DISTRIBUTOR??? IT SHOULD BE ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE!

Sorry to inform you but the plugs and wires are underneath the tray covers in the center of the length of the valve covers , had to do too many tune ups on the 331 when I was an apprentice/ swamper in my 20s' . The Firedome moniker was on the later Chrysler years not long after this particular model .

Nice Find! A little love and she will come back to life.
These are great old cars. I've got a '53 I bought a few years ago about the same condition as yours. I drive it all the time now.
