MiMa's cover of The Doors - Light My Fire

- Опубликовано: 5 янв 2013
- PLEASE NOTE: the audio here is heavily stereofonized, and my keyboard line is for the most part on the right channel, while the Doors' song is on the left. Be sure to listen to this video with a pair of stereo speakers or headphones, otherwise it could seem that I'm just pretending to play.
R.I.P. Ray Manzarek. You were my master. If now I have a big passion for music and playing keyboards, if this video right now exists, it's thank to you.
Many, many thanks for your wonderful music.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's my attempt to play the Doors' signature song, Light My Fire. It was quite a pain to keep myself concentrate thru the whole 6-7 minutes of the song's duration and in fact there are sometimes bump notes and slight errors, but for now I cannot do better, I'm sorry :-(
I used my custom made "fake" Fender Rhodes Piano Bass (which is based on an old Roland U-110 expander) and a CEI Prestige combo organ which I restored some time ago.
The organ passes thru a Behringer Vintage Overdrive pedal and goes directly to the mixer, where it's being equalized to approach the character of the Vox Continental in the original recording.
The original song it's being panned to the left and my keyboard parts on the right, so you can hear them distinctely.
I hope you like it. As usual, constructive comments are welcome :-) - Видеоклипы
I think Ray possessed your body. No wonder you played this perfectly
Thank you, that's a big compliment :-)
Ray's music was definitely the thing which inspired me to start to play keyboards.
I started (again) in 2007, and I'm still in the way of learning and getting better.
Right ? 😜
The bassline in this song is so simple, yet so captivating.
Yes, it truly catches attention and guides the listener throughout the entire song. Ray Manzarek was a genius.
@@mima85 Hey, thanks for responding. You're very good on the keyboard, keep up the great work.
@@touchyissues799 :-)
The bass is on fire
I do it on bass guitar and it’s near impossible not to screw it up once in 4 minutes
ray manzarek is smiling somewhere
I really hope this :-)
This still blows my mind. I have no idea how anyone can do that. Props to this dude. Ray was a genius.
Thank you Blake :-D
This is quite literally the most accurate cover I have ever seen of this song. This is amazing. I don't get how you do it. This song seems impossible to learn!
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
It's possible to learn it, but you have to exercise it quite a lot of times to get the bass and the organ together in the right way. Me, which I'm quite a keyboard novice, I had to play it literally hundreds of times to get the song right.
Thank you Daniel :-)
I always keep a humble attitude because I know that there are around keyboardists with capabilities way better than mines. It's just a matter of fact and I have to accept it.
And keeping a humble attitude makes room for further improvements ;-)
when you consider the year this came out and just how good it was this song easily belongs on the top 5 greatest rock songs.
Makes you realize how big of a genius ray was! The true mastermind behind the doors. No Ray no Doors. Gone but never forgotton. Rest easy Ray.
Of course, but the other three members were supporting columns too, each one doing his own things. With any of them missing the Doors wouldn't exists, actually when Jim died the music that followed for the brief period the band still existed before breaking up, while always being beautiful didn't sound Doors at all.
Youre right, every member had their own kind of magic. After Jim‘s passing The doors just weren’t the doors anymore. The music they brought out was beautiful, but without Jim it was... not as good. He didn’t play an instrument, but his voice and his charismatic appearance made them famous.
@@mrmojorisin9667 More than "not as good", it was just different, like if it was composed by another band. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, a lot of bands explored new musical styles thru the years, it's a natural evolution. With the Doors, the sad thing is that this change was triggered by the death of their frontman. Who knows how their music would've evolved with Jim still alive.
Well, the doors were a thing for only 6 years. But in those 6 years they gained enough popularity to be still spoken about today. In my opinion, Jim would have stopped bringing out new music. He was too much into poetry before his death.
Absolutely Hypnotic ... The Left hand is in a completely different time zone from the right ... One of the Top Ten Songs in Rock History for Sure ... Great Job Man !!
This is the hard part of learning the keyboard parts of any song from The Doors: the bass and organ lines that have to be played together but independently.
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
Manzarek was a keyboard phenom and this guy is mirroring him perfectly.
Ray was a legend

This is the best organ cover I've ever seen and heard!
Thanks VoDKa. Glad you liked it :-)
The best organ cover that I saw was a condom.
Thanks for your appreciation ;-)
Yes it's all learned by ear. I have a strong passion with The Doors, so after listening to the song hundreds of times it forcedly entered in my mind, almost note by note.
I guess your dog it's quite a happy and playful creature to deserve the name "Vivace" ;-)
Oh my god.. the coordination needed to be able to play like this! Just incredible man. Keep it up!
mrhoopsfan23 Yes Doors songs are quite tricky from a coordination's point of view. Still now I have to work a lot prior to be able to play decently their songs.
Thank you for your appreciation :-)
@Devlin Red Crow: The secret is only exercise, exercise and again exercise. Everyone with the right motivation can do :-)
Thank you for your appreciation.
do you have any note sheet for this?
@@WASZCZI-WASZCZI No, I'm not even able to read sheets. I got the song by ear.
@Bruno Scota Thanks for your appreciation :-)
I'm always amazed at someone's ability to play a bass pattern with one hand and the lead on the other. When I was young I tried to learn "Heart and Soul" on the keyboard, and messed it up so bad, I guess it scarred me for life. I can't split my brain in two like you have the ability to do. When I try to concentrate on the left, I screw up the right, and vice versa. Awesome playing, my friend. You truly are gifted.
Thank you.
Regarding playing bass and leads together, it's just matter of exercising. Me too I messed up really bad the first times I tried, it's normal. You have to do things gradually, start by learning the parts individually, develop muscle memory so you haven't to concentrate too much to play them, then start to put them together slowly. Play at very slow tempo the first times to figure out how the two parts fit together, then rise gradually the speed. It require a lot of patience and exercise, but in the end you'll be able to play the whole song.
That has to be the most accurate cover of Manzarek I've ever heard :-)
I tried to do my best. Thanks :-)
Congratulations and well done playing one of the most difficult rock organ pieces. You play it in your perfection! That is one beautifully constructed and busy piece...
Thanks :-D
Indeed, Light My Fire is a great song, definitely a staple of psychedelic rock.
Best cover on YT of this song. Someone give this man a Vox Continental !
+Nikola Begonja I'd truly happy if someone should donate me a Connie :-D

Amazing performance. You nailed all the nuances of Ray's techniques in this song. He would be proud.

Fire wasn’t the only thing that was Lit! Awesome job!
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
Showing this to my kids. Cuz all the AWESOME rock riffs weren’t on guitar - organists made the sound of rock. We’ve lost that. Listen to the solos over 3.24 onwards. Supported by a dude playing bass AND accompanying music
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
Well, I think that both guitarists and keyboardists made legendary riffs on their respective instruments. The Doors wouldn't be the same without Robby Krieger, as Deep Purple wouldn't be the same without Ritchie Blackmore, and so on.
It's awesome, the calm you keep when playing the keyboard, your mind is absolutely in another place while your body plays the keyboard, the whole flow is so natural, certainly the best of your version of LIGHT MY FIRE is your "double game" bodily
AWESOME!!!!!!! Wow! Incredible job...every note and every nuance. Convincing tone. Props on the "Fender" bass project (that left-handed bass was SOLID). I once attempted to figure out this song, but it's incredibly long. And, neither my level of skill nor level of patience were up to the task. Thanks for the left and right pan...makes it easier to discern the parts on headphones.
Thanks to you :-)
Glad you liked my video and my "Fakender" piano-bass :-D
Amazing cover 10/10
Thank you! :-)
Jim left us too early. He was a phenomenal singer with an awesome band. We need more of the 60's and 70's in today's music
I agree. Thanks for your appreciation :-)
can you make a tutorial? please
What a brilliant cover. Definetly the best i've seen on youtube. Also thank you for taking the time to reply to every single comment, that's true dedication :)
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
Yes I try to reply to every comment, I usually like when someone replies to a comment of mine even just to say "thank you", so while I can I'll do the same.
The amount of talent this requires is insane.
Thanks :-)
This is the best cover i've ever heard of ANY song. Excellent work!

This was very nicely done. The musicianship was excellent and the sound was very close to the original. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks
This video is insane haha, are you son of Ray? hahaahhaha great job !!
Eheh thank you :-)
Musically yes, I can tell I'm "son" of Ray, because it's mainly thanks to him that I started to get interested in playing keyboards.
Teared up. no joke.
Glad you had a good time watching my video. Thanks for your appreciation :-)

Thanks for making me appreciate the song and keys more than I already did and making me hear things I have missed over the 40+ years I've heard this song.
Thanks to you for your appreciation :-)
that was a pleasure to watch and to listen to. Absolute perfection!
Thanks Ben, glad you liked my video :-)
I said he better be good..your dam good nice job
Amazing work doing this. The fact you nailed it note per note proves how proficient you are just like Ray !
I can't imagine how they'd record this in the 60s. Knowing how you'd often only one shot and if you make a mistake you might need to redo the track all over again.
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
Well, indeed editing and multi track recording were possible in the 60ies, it was all done on tape so it wasn't as convenient as it's today with computers and digital audio tools, but it was definitely feasible and it was actually done, so mistakes could be corrected without having to re-record the entire part or even the entire song.
Bands could also choose if to record every part one by one singularly or do a one-shot multitrack record while playing together, often choosing the latter for better interplay between band members. They often did also multiple takes, mainly not for mistakes but to choose the best version of their execution. For example, if you search here on RUclips for "riders on the storm alternate version" you'll find a complete alternate take of that song which never made its way to records, but it's definitely worth a listen.
@@mima85 Interesting thank you for that
@@beesmongeese2978 U're welcome :-)
Really good. I just watched another of your covers. looking forward to going through them all. Thanks as I know you spent a lot of effort doing these.
Thanks to you for your appreciation :-)
Excellent Stuff Man! Great key work. Naturally flowing
Thanks for your appreciation :-)
This is the best cover of the studio version I've ever heard or seen...totally VERBATIM...unbelievable! I saw in the comments below...The CEI Prestige, is that a Crumar? It sounds exactly like the Vox Continental, or at least the settings Ray Manzarek used on the record! I can't imagine how long it must have taken to PERFECT! Good job, sir!!
Thank you for your compliments :-)
Yes it was actually quite a hard work to get this song together, I had to exercise, exercise, exercise... and exercise again.
My CEI is just... a CEI. CEI was itself a manufacturer of electronic organs.
Well if you listen carefully (in headphones) you can actually perceive a good difference in sound comparing my organ to a true Vox Continental, but hey, a Connie costs an eye and a kidney (just becuase it was used by Ray... this is very stupid), so I tried my best to emulate the sound with a much cheaper organ, which by the way I restored and modified to approach the Continental's sound.
Ray Manzarek Approved
:-)
I love them massively, and u just make me feel better, knowing out there are such people as talented as u
Thanks for your kind words. Glad my video was good for your feelings, that's great to hear :-)

Whoa. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing performance with us 😁

damn. that was good.

Génial..
Thank you :-)
I used a CEI Prestige combo organ and a custom-made keyboard with a Roland U-110 sound module inside, to emulate the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass used by Manzarek for the bass lines.
mima14031985 Merci mon cher!
mima14031985 Pourrait tu me donner juste ta version instrumentale
s'en la voix de Jim?
jeremie r No, I'm sorry. After having done this some years ago for a couple of guys without recieving back even a single thank for my work, I decided to don't do anymore high quality records of the instrumental tracks alone which are in my videos for people on RUclips asking for them.
Nothing personal with you, really, but I hope you could understand me.
If you want, in this specific case you can take the audio from my video, which is stereo, mute the left channel where is all the original song, and keep just the right channel, where are my instrumental parts alone (just the bass and the organ). The quality will not be so high as a proper recording, but it does the trick for a jam with a band for example.
You can do this just for this video as the original song and my playing are completely separated across the stereo field, in my other videos this trick doesn't work as all the parts are mixed together.
merci a toi

This is just awesome. it feels awesome.

Such accuracy. I really enjoyed this, that left hand! As impressive as the lead right if not more so. Well done
julesmail67 Thank you for your kind words :-)
I agree that this is a truly impressive bravura performance, but I do have a minor quibble about the bass line: in the basic verse (eg "You know that it would be untrue") the recurrent Manzarek bass line (on the studio recording and the live versions I've heard) is a simple root position broken triad except for the insertion of a single 7th degree of the scale
(ie 1, 735,35 in Am, then F#m) rather than the more spread out broken chord mima plays - from memory I think it's 1,857,57 but it might be 1,757,57
Thank you for this video! You are my Hero!
