I had an '84 Subaru GL hatchback back in the day, its was a decent car. Do you remember the Subaru Justy with a 3 cylinder motor and a cvt? I believe they were the first vehicle in the US with a cvt.
The competition to the Forester is the rav4. The Rav4 is louder, slower( if u can believe that) and awful looking dash board. Not to mention a lot more $. Other than that, great car 😄
Scotty, nobody talkes about an incredible Subaru advantage. LOWER CENTER OF GRAVITY. ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE is incredible with the horizontal engine. Try avoiding a sudden situation at 78 MPH, you'll be a believer!
Had a 2017 Forester, traded it in on a 2023 after it was involved in an accident. Loving it . Only reason hes getting 25 miles a gallon is because of the gearing in the wilderness. took ours on a short road trip of a few hundred miles and got between 36 and 41 miles per gallon.
Thanks for that. I've been in my 2006 Forester since it had 6 miles. Am thinking of getting a used 2021 with 16K miles. Hesitant about all the new electronics and Eyesight. Any thoughts?
I owned a 2012 Outback with a 2.5L engine and a 6-speed manual. It got 30+mpg on the highway. I drove to ski in Colorado every weekend for years. I drove in all conditions. It never missed a beat. It got stuck once - I drove fast into a huge snow mound. The car got high centered and all 4 tires were off the ground. It took 5 minutes of digging to get one tire on pavement, then I was off and running.
Owned a '84 Subaru Hatchback, 1600cc, 4-speed manual, no A/C or radio (although I added them later), went 97,000+ miles, had to replace clutch, but otherwise it drove like a champ till I sold it for a station wagon. Now own a '22 Forester and am loving it and taking great care of it. I'm expecting it to last to at least 200,000 miles with me behind the wheel.
I have a Forester Wilderness and I love it. Yes, the Wilderness trim has an EPA rating of 28 mpg on the highway vs 33 mpg for the other Foresters, but it's geared lower than the others. Which is why it can tow 3000 lbs vs 1500 lbs for the others. As for comfort, I drove mine from Alaska to Arizona and back and it was very comfortable. I'm 6' 2" and never felt uncomfortable. It's a great little SUV.
I’m on my fourth Subi. My first was a 2014 Crosstrek. Kept it for 24,000 problem free miles, just didn’t like the 2.0’s lack of power it was a CVT with paddle shifters for manual mode. My second is a 2016 Forester automatic(non CVT) with 57,000 trouble free miles. Third was 2017 base WRX six seed manual. I had 27,000 miles on it, found motor oil in the turbo.traded it in on a 2021 Crosstrek sport. So far 22,000 miles trouble free. Power out of the 2.5 is good (no WRX), the only thing I am Leary of is the direct fuel injection. I have ran a induction cleaner at 10,000 miles, then installed a oil catch can. I drain it at every oil change(5,000 miles) and rarely get the motor oil milk shake. (Twice now at 27,000 miles). Love both cars. Living in Northern Idaho, snow, some mud and fire roads, both car do very well. We are happy with both cars…….. side note….. we DO miss our 07 FJ Cruiser 2WD with locking rear diff…..
Love my 2014 CrossTrek! While I agree it's underpowered (especially from a full stop) the paddle shifters make up the difference when passing on the highway and climbing hills. Hardly a week goes by without me exclaiming, "I love this car!"
Sister lived in moscow Id. But guy in vancouver washington turned me ...german mechanic who claimed " japanese took boxer 4 made it work right " . Might be right ..enjoy
I have a 15 outback, baught at 225k. Was scared of CVT but learned these aren't bad. All highway miles. Got a like new comfy car with ground clearance and awd for 7400. Burns no oil, steering is tight. Love it. I get 27 mpg average
We have a 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition. This is Subaru #7 for us. We've never had a problem with our Subis. We end up buying them every time they come out with new features. Granted we've never had one reach 100,000 miles but with the low mileage we have when getting a new one the resale value is excellent. I have never been as dedicated to a car brand.
Our current 2014 Subaru Forester is over 10 years old and still running. I did all the maintenance, including changing the CVT fluid 3 times. These will definitely last as long as the maintenance is done.
@Sralaineo- When I drained the CVT fluid around 36,000 miles, it was darker than I expected. I decided to do it 2 more times to get most of the old fluid out and have mostly new CVT fluid inside the Lineartronic CVT.
Had a 1990's Legacy. Had to get brake work every year. Transmission went up at about 80k, windows came off the tracks at about 80k. That was it for me. No more Subaru.
I am one who changes engine oil and transmission fluid well before the recommended mileage, I thought I was going to have few problems with my wife's 2013 Impreza Sport. However, the valve control body on the Subaru cvt went bad on the Impreza Sport at 174,000 KM's (just outside of the 160,000 KM's warranty period) and cost $2,700 to replace. She drove the car very conservatively without putting a lot of stress on the cvt . I don't trust the subaru now as the dealer who did the work only gave a 1 year or 20,000 KM warranty on the replacement valve body. Given the experience with the valve body I don't think I would buy another Subaru.
The older Foresters were ugly, but they were perfectly utilitarian, and decent in snow or even mild off road. The newer ones seem like big clunky minivan things.
Subarus are well thought-out vehicles. My wife drives a 2017 Subaru Outback which we bought new and she loves it. It was better than the Chevy Equinox that we considered. My favorite car was the 1990 Plymouth Laser which I bought new. I would still be driving it if were not for it rusting away. I took it to the beach at Seaside Park at Long Island Sound everyday(even in the winter) . I gave my Laser to a friend in 2008 after I bought a 2008 Sebring Hardtop convertible, which I still drive. The Laser had a little more the 225,000 miles. It never had a problem except for rust. I consistently got 30 mi./gal. The Sebring now has 192,500 miles. The only problem was the oil pump had to be replaced at 150,000 miles. BTW, Scotty, 3 car mechanics could not figure out the problem, even one at the Chrysler dealership. You were the only one among them who properly diagnosed the problem. I owe you a big thanks because it was cheaper to get it replaced than getting a new engine or a new car.
Ive had a 09 Subaru Tribeca with 257,000 km bought 5 years ago. Ive repmaced the brakes all round once. no oil leak. New rad okd one had a pin hole . Been beter then my Honda accords sbd ny Acura CLS type 2. I yhink om still on the iriginal doark plugs cuz its hard to get st the bavk ones
We own 3, run great, great value, best all-wheel drive of any vehicle we’ve owned (40 yrs car buying) We live in Mass, my wife drove up our driveway with no issues in 5-6” snow during snow storm in her 2022 Outback XLT. My daughter at college in Main was only one in her house to get out of parking lot before plow came. And they are safe.
I living in Fairbanks, Alaska for several years and saw tons of Subarus there. They were a hot commodity in Alaska and hard to find a used one because people wouldn’t give ‘em up.
When i was at the subaru dealer(I live in Northeast Wisconsin) They had 2 really used ones and one 2022 Forester with 11,000 miles. That one was priced almost to where it was just as well to get a brand new one which I did. So far I love it. Mine is the Forester sport in blue. I always bought GM products before this and as much as I did like them, i can see the more I look at my Forester that it is a more quality product. I did look at the Toyota Rav4, the Honda CR-V, my Forester, the Chevy Equinox and the Hyundai Tuscan. Liked the Forester the best of all. Comfortable seat, ride, and I could get everything I wanted for the price I had in mind.
Had my 2016 forester with a dash lit up. Power steering that would turn off. Traction control didn’t work. Abs didn’t work. Oil leaks. Exhaust leaks. Got rid of it it was falling apart. I was chasing sensor problems and it ran rich constantly. And that’s after 4 new fuel injectors. Came from up north. That car still got me to work and back. Never failed me. Didn’t pay anything for it. Funny thing. All those problems. Still got almost 25mpg.
The model you were looking at is the Wilderness, Subarus more "off-Roady" Forrester. They are good for more rugged fire roads (I would not be rock crawling in it). However, to climb hilly dirt roads better, they have a higher final drive gear, which gives it great off the line acceleration, but it comes at the cost of lower MPG's. The other Foresters have around 33 MPG on the highway. As far as CVTs are concerned, I have a 14 Outback and 18 Crosstrek and those CVTs work great (but I prefer the manual, they just have a better feel and the AWD is pure mechanical).
Hi Scotty, thank you for the great information, on all you do. Educating us about the different vehicles! The good, the bad and the best ones for a working man's money 💰. All the best to you and your family! Thanks Bro.
Scottie, I have a Toyota Tacoma and a Subaru forester. The best thing about the forester is that the car is very easy to work on. Simple to change the alternator! Many of the fixes are so easy!
My 2015 prius has 310k miles. I am stickler for maintenance. Drilled into my head by granddad, dad and uncles. oil changed every 5k, trans fluid every 50k. engine and inverter coolant changed every 100k.
I will never willingly give up my old manual turbo Outback. I like and encourage AWD but think tires are more important. In the snow I'd take a FWD with snow tires over an AWD with all seasons. In the snow AWD will help you get moving but snow tires will help you stop & turn. I suggest both AWD & snow tires if you drive in snow. If I can't control my car once it's moving I'd rather not move.
I'm also in the minority of people that don't like the screen that sticks up over the dash. I have a 2023 base Forester which does have a smaller screen than the one shown here but I'm good with it. I believe Subaru made the steering responsive headlights standard feature on Foresters in 2021.
Toyota and Subaru share cvts and the plant that builds these. they also use the same suppliers. They are very similar vehicles quality wise except for awd
I've had my Forester since 2014, year model 2009 with manual transmission and driven 166 000 miles. It's a turbo diesel with 147 hp, much better than the gasoline engine that doesn't have that much torque. It's been a great all around car and must say that I fell in love with it😅 It hasn't had any bigger issues so far. I change the engine oil and filter sooner than recommended though. With icy and snowy roads here in Finland and having Subaru's awd one doesn't need to worry if there's snow up to your knees on your driveway in the morning when you're going to work. 😅They don't have the diesel model in US do they?
As far as brand new I like the new frontier no cvt transmission it's actually a Mercedes design licensed out to jayco & mechanical hydraulic steering & a reliable 6 cyl I don't think anyone does that anymore also Subaru is bringing back the Baja to compete with Ford Maverick that might be good id wait to see what Scotty says he's been spot on so far...
I never liked cvt transmissions & then hearing what Scotty says about them I'm buying a frontier over taco no cvt no turbo no electronic steering even though toyatas are bulletproof I'll take a V6 automatic hydro steering I'm old school & it'll last almost as long as a taco for less $ I don't just listen to Scotty I actually HEAR him lol
I'm 6'5" built line a linebacker and couldn't fit into a Rav4 Highlander or GrandHighlander.....Tried the Forrest.....great ease getting in an out but the telescopic steering was too short with the seat all the way back.....The Outback fit like a glove and got that but prefer the boxier design of the Forrester......if Subaru made the Forrest 9" longer and longer telescopic steering, it would be the perfect car for tall guys like me. I just hope mine lasts
My wife and I were going to buy a Toyota RAV 4 in 2022. But the dealer wanted to charge us a significant amount of money over sticker which we weren't going to pay under ANY circumstance. My sister in law has a 2016 Forrester that she was very happy with, so we decided to look at one. We ended up buying one, and are VERY satisfied with our purchase. Still love Toyota, but Subaru is a great alternative in terms of quality and price IMO.
Loving my Outback Wilderness. Ground clearance of a 4 Runner. Quick, comfortable, spacious no nonsense. AWD system incredible Never get stuck. If when things need replacing, wont cost arm and a leg to repair either which is nice. Nice review here.
I'll stick with my 06 solara. Cheap and easy to work on. 255k I'd drive it from East Tennessee to Vegas without a worry in the world. Burns some oil 300k I'm going to do a reman on the engine.
We bought a new 2020 the wife love it. The CVT is chain drive and not a belt. You don’t get that rubber band effect like with the older Toyota’s or the Nissan’s.
You nailed it. I have a 2011 forester I bought at 90,00 miles. Now has 106,000 miles and the engine has to be removed to hopefully fix the oil leaks. $2200. What a crappy way to do things. And the transmission seal leaks. At least that is only $250. Never again.
I just spent $5,700 on a new engine for my stock ‘17 WRX. Two pieces of the piston skirt blew apart and ruined a rod bearing. Let me know when you want to buy it Scotty.
I personally wouldn't ever buy a Subaru with an N/A 4 cylinder. I had an 05 WRX back in the day and it was a hoot to drive! My brother had an Impreza and outback. Both cars felt like they couldn't get outta their own way. Insanely slow for me, but maybe feels alright for others.
Apparently, when toyota and Subaru were in a conglomeration years ago, toyota has pretty much been allowed to copy Subaru awd, and improve on it. At least that's what my brother in law, who is a supervisor at a toyota plant, told me a few years ago. Still keeping My toyota though. 😊
Question for you? How can I get the best ride (comfort) for my 2003 Toyota RAV4. I know it’s asking a lot, but what changes in the suspension would work? I love content! Thank You!!!
Subaru crosstrek is what I’m looking at because I can’t afford a new 4x4 truck so I’m planning on parking my truck at work and commuting on the Subaru, sucks because my job just got themselves a work truck for free. Fml
I heard several reasons not to buy this superpoop. If you’re going into heavy snow, don’t buy it. If you’re going off~road, don’t buy it. If you’re going to tow anything more than groceries, don’t buy it. Got it. Will stick with my 4runner.
The only trouble with Subaru is that they are ripping American customers off ...the cars are built in USA , Indiana ...... I saw on the web the other day that a Canadian guy bought a Subaru built in Indiana , it was shipped to Canada , and he was able to buy it using Canadian dollars ...and the bottom line was that he got the car for over $ 6000.oo USA dollars cheaper then what Subaru is charging USA customers .... all the carmakers are hell bent on ripping off USA customers
Hey Scotty, if you’re up in NEW England want to take a look at my Subaru Forester? It has a pesky P0171 code that keeps coming back and I can’t seem to find the issue. Let me know, I’m in Massachusetts!
Foresters are amazing and cheap to maintain... But oh boy... When something does go wrong, it's still a Subaru, meaning you better prepare to dip your hands in your savings account....

My grand daughter drives a 2013 Forester. It’s a great first car for north Idaho.
Yeah, they do have a lot of problems...
If Subaru, Kia, & Hyundai, etc why did Isuzu leave US?
Had an 88 Isuzu pu near 300k. Was unstoppable. Sold it to buy a 1993 Ford Explorer Sport.
The trooper was a beast..non stop
My new Acura MDX knocked out the Subaru crossover out of the water. Scotty should review one of these bad boys.
Isn't the MDX about 25grand more than the Forester?? Why not compare a Toyota Cross to an rx350 Lexus next time. That seems more competitive 🙄
Or a corolla😂
My ‘70 VW Bus (not camper) got 22mpg, even at 57 HP. Thanks, Scotty, for all you do ❤
My 2015 prius has 310k miles. I am stickler for maintenance. Drilled into my head by granddad, dad and uncles. oil changed every 5k, trans fluid every 50k. engine and inverter coolant changed every 100k.
I put 275,000 miles on my 2011 Subaru Legacy Limited over 7 1/2 years. Used a little oil. I averaged 30.1 mpg.
The undercarriage of the Subaru nearly got me killed when it buckled from a rear end collision. ..check crash safety not just engine performance
It's supposed to buckle to absorb the shock. Subarus have 5 star crash ratings.
I have a 21 outback, a bigger car. It gets about 25 to 28 in town and 29 to 32 on the highway. Decent but not spectacular.
I love that wilderness version of the forester. That color green also is the color I would choose.
Own 2018 Crosstrek heat the city drive, can’t control power slow and when step on gas it go too fast, but adaptive crew control is helpful.
I'm also in the minority of people that don't like the screen that sticks up over the dash. I have a 2023 base Forester which does have a smaller screen than the one shown here but I'm good with it. I believe Subaru made the steering responsive headlights standard feature on Foresters in 2021.
Rita and Savanna are fancy editions, too, Scotty.
Toyota and Subaru share cvts and the plant that builds these. they also use the same suppliers. They are very similar vehicles quality wise except for awd
Toyota and Subaru are cousins. The companies are somewhat related, since Toyota partly owns Subaru. Hence, technology sharing between them.
Same thing with Mazda.
Nope. Wish they did.
I know europe costs more. 87 octane gasoline is $3.11 per gallon. Diesel is $4.11 per gallon. 4 quarts per gallon. 1.06 quarts equal 1 liter.
You've got turbo. Your engine won't last long.
The Camry le awd is THE CAR. I think it's the best all around car for the money and rides nice.
@@marksullivan8200Not a whole lot of price difference with Tacoma here in Canada
We opted for a mazda cx5 but if it weren’t for cvt tranny forester it would have been.
I've never driven a Subaru, but I've heard many other first time buyers love them.
"It's got heat seaters" - okay...
I have a 2016 Outback and get 29 city 34 hwy
The wilderness edition is pretty cool. I’d get one if it had a standard.
Have a CVT cooler... no problem by overheating...
We bought a new 2020 the wife love it. The CVT is chain drive and not a belt. You don’t get that rubber band effect like with the older Toyota’s or the Nissan’s.
Never EVER buy ANY car with a CVT Transmission. NEVER!
I love my five speed manual
@ 8:54 Slow playback to .25%...LOL
My 2013 Manual shift CrossTrek gets 32 mpg on the hwy. It's got a 2.0 engine and made in Japan.
You nailed it. I have a 2011 forester I bought at 90,00 miles. Now has 106,000 miles and the engine has to be removed to hopefully fix the oil leaks. $2200. What a crappy way to do things. And the transmission seal leaks. At least that is only $250. Never again.
These newer Subaru's are much better.
How is that? Aren’t all newer cars better?
@@marcpikas2859 Not really.
We rented a Forester Sport this summer and it was awesome. Sold me on Subaru.
I don't know....I know 3 different people who had the motors on their outbacks blow up. That's pretty much 100% of the people I know with Subarus...
Mustve had the old 2.5. They had the issues but they were so simple to fix too.
Scotty I have a 2017toyota Corolla Le the key fob will not open the trunk it open and lock the doors but it will not open the trunk what could it be
Question for you? How can I get the best ride (comfort) for my 2003 Toyota RAV4. I know it’s asking a lot, but what changes in the suspension would work? I love content! Thank You!!!
Subaru crosstrek is what I’m looking at because I can’t afford a new 4x4 truck so I’m planning on parking my truck at work and commuting on the Subaru, sucks because my job just got themselves a work truck for free. Fml
Owned my 2017 Crosstrek since new 90k miles so far, very affordable all-rounder vehicle
@@mrgarrison3516 sounds good, thank you
I’m pissed and it shocked the whole car industry
I've always admired Subaru possibly the best 4x4 of all, but it was their engines that would blow headgaskets. Have they overcome that issue?
you can turn off the stop and go feature
Leak oil after 200 k miles...LoL Scotty way crazy. Subaru outback touring great vehicle...2022. Toyota are great but way over valued.
Most people trade their car in way before the 200,000 mark, anyway.
I heard several reasons not to buy this superpoop. If you’re going into heavy snow, don’t buy it. If you’re going off~road, don’t buy it. If you’re going to tow anything more than groceries, don’t buy it. Got it. Will stick with my 4runner.
Hey you can get a Corolla with all wheel drive and a hybrid powertrain for $25,000 now
How much hp?
Hey Scotty, where is that bell at the end of the vids? York U?
I have a turbo.. no issues.. love it!
My wife is driving our seventh subaru, she loves them, can't get her to drive anything else.
Does she trade often just before the warranty expires?
Maintenance is key for dependability
That's what I drove when I lived up north. Great cars
I wish Toyotas had front cameras on all of their models.
Foresters are amazing and cheap to maintain... But oh boy... When something does go wrong, it's still a Subaru, meaning you better prepare to dip your hands in your savings account....
Your supporting the Agenda doing this Video
Toyota missed the paycheck this month
Own a newer Subaru and a older Toyota they are both great vehicles
Hello Scotty. Would you advise a specific year Subaru forester to get under 10 grand?
All Subaru engines are made in Japan the vehicle may be assembled in America but the engines are all made in Japan
The King of Hyperbolic Headlines… but he’s the best!
