The shading tip is the paintbrush of your burning kit.
It's designed to burn or fill in broad areas. This is also the tip that will burn gradient shade, the technique that is the most difficult for many burners to master.
There are many varieties of shaders and it's, perhaps, the most difficult of burning tips to choose.
This video will help you select the correct shader for your burning.

This is such a fantastic series of videos! This greatly helped to explain my razor pen types and their capabilities. I've checked out a fair amount of videos, and these were the only ones I actually feel I've gained some new tips and tricks for my pens. Fantastic, can't thank you enough for your time making these.

Thanks so much for your post. I've been doing pyrography for only about 6 or so months. This video helped me to understand how I don't need to try & get everything done in one stroke, but that I can do various layers of lighter to darker shading to achieve better realism. Thanks again!

hoping to learn something .. first time doing any wood burning and ive watched a few of your videos.. nice!!very nice work... i bought the 5 in 1 hobby woodburner..ha!! im guessing i'll be buying something more up to it once i ruin a ton of wood!! but my brother owns a tree service and ive got a wood plainer so its a hobby id like to maybe some day make a xtra buck off of... again,nice work i'll be watching all your videos im sure..thanx

If I wish to just do one large feather, which shader should I buy or will I need variable sizes>? Please tell me which ones.!
ThaNKS.! Love your book ...'Pyrography Workbook..A complete guide..' I find it so interesting.
There is no need to have different sized shaders for most projects. (Obviously miniature work often need a smaller size.) the important thing with shaders is to find a style that works for you. I personally find a spoon shader is my go to...but you might prefer a flat round, square, spear. For a feather I think a spear, flat round or spoon would be good. Also...IMPORTANT to keep in mind. A bigger shader does not mean you can cover more area faster. The more metal in a tip, the more time it takes to heat up and to recover heat once lifted off the surface. A small, medium shader recover heat much faster.
O.K. now I am a little confused ...do these have different names in your book 'Pyrography Workbook.A complete guide..'Please tell me which nibs to buy to do the patterns in your book by what name you use here and what name you describe them in your book. And can you tell me if you sell them as I would prefer to buy from you if you sell. Thanks for this demo.

I'm sorry but I found this useless. I'm trying to understand how to shade using the tips. Instead you demonstrated that the shading tools can make straight lines.... Thanks??
You showed pictures of your amazing work using shading but didn't tell us how to do it. I want to learn how to shade. I got nothing out of this video.
CandyCane =) I can understand your frustration about shading....it's by far the most difficult aspect of pyrography to grasp and master. But I'm afraid your frustration at me is misdirected in this case. This free video, which took a lot of my time to produce, is entitled 'Pyrography TIPS Explained, The Shader'....not 'Pyrography Shading Explained'. You said I only showed how a shading tip can 'make straight lines'. A pyrography tip is a broad piece of metal of a set width. The way most people shade with this tip is to abut and overlap a series of 'lines'. The lines can be straight or curved or circular or whatever suits the subject matter...but the fact remains a shading tip burns a wide line and the overlapping and build up of these 'lines' is what creates gradient tone....in other words, 'shading'. Please try and remember that we put these videos up free of charge in the hopes of helping others. The sarcasm of your 'thanks??' isn't warranted.
