There are historical accounts that Berserkers got so enraged that they used to throw their weapons and shields on the ground in-front of the enemy and charge them barehanded
This is false. Berserkers weren't enraged at all. They were in an emotionless trance while being high on psychedelic mushrooms. The fact that they couldn't feel much of any negative emotion or pain made them effective in combat
It's actually both it was a trance that berserkers could put themselves in but ate psychedelic mushrooms and fungi like a shortcut to berserk out they only ever used the mushrooms tho to discover the trance and to help them learn how to manifest it trust me my family ancestors I believe from tests we have done might have been berserkers themselves and based on personal experience I can tell u that the trance does not need mushrooms it's like a talent it's either part of your DNA or it's not but if u can work yourself into a trance were u are literally to angry to feel pain or able to identify friends from foes and u find your skin hardening the more combat u see u might be a berserker by the way what I ment about your skin hardening was a doctor should be able to break needles on your skin it was a phenomenon that happens to berserkers if they survive a lot of battles there are records of the oldest berserkers having skin so hard that pikes just glinted off them merely leaving a scratch
