Here my theory is, Sanemi just wanted to scare genya because i think Sanemi knew the whole time that tanjiro was there. But How can I so sure ? Because No one was able to find Nakime's eyeball in the entire series because it was made for the purpose of hiding, but Sanemi found it just by a slight sound. Do you really think sanemi wouldn't know tanjiro was there ? Come on Bro, He is literally Hashira. I think Sanemi was checking whether Tanjiro will save Genya or not if he attacks Genya. And when tanjiro came to protect genya, Sanemi sure that Tanjiro will protect Genya 3. Why Sanemi was beating tanjiro If Sanemi was sure that Tanjiro would protect Genya ?
