HOW TO WWOOF FOR BEGINNERS - THE BASICS FOR WORK + CHEAP TRAVEL
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 авг 2024
- WWOOF aka World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, is a really fantastic way to travel, meet new people and learn a little about farming in the process! Workaway, and HelpX are other programs that offer similar opportunities where guests volunteer their time in exchange for room and/or board. All are fantastic options for traveling the world while on a budget. Save money on the cost of sleeping accommodations and food while getting to socialize and learn, what's not to like there?!
I have experience in a number of places including Canada, California, Hawaii. In addition I’ve researched farms in Thailand and Costa Rica and talked to many other WWOOFers about their time as a vagabond worker ;)
I encourage anyone to try it, no matter your age. If you are able-bodied and open minded, we can find something for you! Friends, food and fun, what’s not to like?
Firstly, a few things about how to navigate the website. Each area of the world has a different site and membership. You’ll buy a membership which typically lasts for one year. After making your profile (with good photos) you can start browsing farm profiles. You’re able to filter results with your preferences (ie. vegetarian/vegan, smoking/non-smoking etc.) and use key word searches. Most WWOOF sites will also have reviews from previous WWOOFers. You’ll havee access to the host’s contact info, sometimes this includes their address which you can google for their location. E-mail them with a little about yourself, your availability and any questions and you’re all set!
Before getting started a few things you should know: Not all farms are certified organic farms, some are just people with a backyard who need a hand. Also, not every exchange is for full room and board, some you have to pay additional or supplement your own food. Lastly, know that there are no consistent standards. All farms are maintained individually and things like safety and cleanliness are up to the discretion of the owner. Some farms will be paradise and others pigpens.
Ask yourself, what are my intentions? Keep in mind what you’re priorities are and it will help you in finding the right fit. Are you interested in learning, making friends, and/or travelling?
In researching farm profiles be sure to find out your length of stay/commitment; exact work hours & type; what food is provided; how many WWOOFers on the property at a time; what are your sleeping accommodations; what is transportation like around the area?
If their descriptions are a little light, you might want to contact them and ask: How much experience is required on your behalf; What is the kitchen type (ie. veg only); What do they grow & can you eat it; Their location relative to town?
As for general tips… Be sure to pack light, be a minimalist! Don’t forget to make all your arrangements (ie. how will you get from the airport to the farm?). If you feel uncomfortable about committing to such an unknown, try and get a farm on recommendation, read reviews from past WWOOFers, ask to Skype your host beforehand. Always keep in mind that, if you don’t know something (like which plant is a weed or where to put your tool), just ask! Take advantage of your hosts as a resource for learning the inside scoop on the area. Be ready to work - take it seriously. Often this is people’s homes, plus, you’ll get more out of it! Arrange in advance. I started preparing 6 months prior. Farms have to plan their sessions and so there might be a wait list. Know your options - if after giving it a chance, if it’s not going well for either or both parties, you can leave. I’d say be respectful as much as you can, try and have a conversation about it and provide some constructive feedback. You can also review them fairly on the site. Acknowledge any of your participation in this as well. Lastly, stay open! It’s going to be a lot of new, but give it a chance =)

I just found WWOOF 30 min ago and this is the first video I'm watching over personal experiences. Thank you! I'm nervous about this, but I never thought I'd find such an amazing opportunity!
Hey Jacob😃 I'm so excited for you to have found WWOOFing! As you heard me talk about, I'm a big fan. You are so right, there are endless opportunities to travel, learn, and meet people thanks to this program. I hope you have a great time wherever you choose to venture!
Meee tooo!! Tell us if you had experienced it yourself?
@@katgreenvideo Hello, do you need volunteers?
This was so, soooo helpful. Thank you! My sister and I are thinking of WWOOFing together in Scandinavia. We were looking at it yesterday and both agreed that we should go for it. I slept the best I ever have last night. 😌I feel like this is a necessity for my soul.
+The Magic Crafter That was so beautiful to read Love. Thank you for sharing your journey to that realization🙏🏼 It's inspiring to hear how in tune you are. Keep following your heart, all the best to you girls!💗✨
come to Scandinavia! We'd love to have you.
Come to upstate n y
I’m here
Did you already went WWOOFing in Scandinavia? I'm interested how it was
Thank you. You cleared up alot of questions. I'm 67 yro with alot left in the tank and a more than average amount of experience gardening and have worked in the trades for my since I was 20. I'm pretty sure I could be an asset on most any farm situation. Again thank you for this Vlog. Good Luck in all you do.
You are most welcome Chuck💗 I enjoyed hearing a little piece of your story and too think you could bring a lot to your host farm. I hope you find a good fit!
@@katgreenvideo Hello, do you need volunteers?
When this pandemic is over I want to start my nomadic lifestyle with this. I do not like America and want out. I'm 24. Thanks for the tips it helped alot
What a special thing it is to be inspired 🔥 I hope this pandemic chapter is over sooner rather than later and you can pursue your travel dreams😊
Same here! I'm 24 and ready for that life.
I feel like other countries have stuff like cheaper medical stuff and the gov’t help even americans. Japan gave monthly stimulus checks even to non citizens, so yeah other countries seem better
Same age, same goal, stuck in cold Switzerland. This pandemic is killing so many dreams gosh
I'm on the same page with this one
Recently heard about wwoofing, I’m 17 and kinda feeling a bit lost in life but I feel really called to this organization. This video was so helpful! I’m definitely feeling called towards Hawaii or Italy but I guess I’ll see how it goes! Your advice and way of explaining everyone will be more help to me than you’ll ever know, thank you!
Heartwarming to read your comment tzuyuwu. Have a great trip wherever you decide!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with RUclips about your experiences with WWOOF. It has been very helpful.
Thanks so much for taking the time to say so Sam! I wish you well with your WWOOFing adventures
I loved every second of this video!! I'm just finding out about the WWOOFing culture and I'm very interested in getting involved. This has been the most informative video I've watched. You were very informative and have such a sweet voice that is very easy to listen to. Thank you for all the advice!!
Ryan💗 That is so lovely of you to say. I'm thrilled it was helpful and I wish you well on your WWOOFing adventures to come!
Thank you so much for putting this video together. It was very helpful. With the tips you provided there shouldn’t be any issues.
My pleasure Pasha! I appreciate your comment and wish you well on your adventures :)
Thanks for this great video Kat! My sister and I are planning to WWOOF around the US for about 5 months starting this summer, and we're just starting the farm search process now. This was super helpful for us to know what questions to ask and how to prepare.
Hi Leah and Claire, that sounds like such a rad adventure! I'm so glad you found the vid supportive, I wish for you tones of fun and learning this summer😘
@@katgreenvideo Hello, do you need volunteers?
Thank you SO much for this video! I am extremely interested in WWOOFing in Hawaii next year long-term and your insight was so concise and helpful. You are such a radiant and positive spirit :) All the love.
Aloha Alli! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. Love to you as well. I wish for you much enjoyment and learning on your upcoming travels!😊💕
I signed up for wwoofing, however, I ended up just traveling in my van. Glad you had so many good experiences, because, like you said, i have heard some horror stories. I guess it pays to do a ton of research like you did. Wow, i'm impressed, can't believe you traveled around all by yourself.
+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY Van life is great too! I did my share of that after WWOOFing actually. Yeah, solo travel was awesome. I did meet ppl along the way that I'd cruise around with.
Do you get paid for this?
i am a good farmer,i will love to bring my skills to your country you can contact me at enochndukasmith at gmail.com
Very good video! I have been commuting locally for years volunteering at a wonderful CASA farm. In return I get a full share of produce for each day I volunteer up to 3 days. Now I am relocating to another state. Being able to volunteer at an organic farm is something I want to continue to do. That's what inspired me to look into WWOOF. I truly appreciate such an easy to watch in depth video. New Subby right here! :0)
Thanks Lissa! Sounds like you found a way to incorporate the WWOOFing model into your life there, very cool!👍🏼 I hope you link up with a good farm in your new spot☺️
This was such a great video - thank you for your insight, patience to do this for everyone interested in the WWOOF program - very helpful!
Thank you for saying so Mishkele. It’s super supportive to hear positive feedback like that💕

These were such useful tips!
Thank you SO much!!
My pleasure demonicporridge! It’s totally normal to feel anxious trying something outside your comfort zone. That can be the initiation to some really fulfilling experiences though😉
hey! i just found out about wwoof yesterday. i've always wanted to travel and this seems like such a great opportunity thanks so much for sharing. i'm only 17 but when i am finished with my studies i just want to get out and explore the world as freely as possible and in my own time. x x x x
That sounds like a great plan Tilly! Have fun on your adventures and enjoy your studies in the meantime💛
Hey Kat, thank you for sharing in such a kind and informative way! This is just what I was looking for as I prep to WWOOF in Hawaii this summer. Totally looking for a vegan friendly farm with lots of learning opportunities! Can't wait to make my nerdy excel list. Great tip.
So glad to hear it was helpful Grant! I wish you well in Hawaii. Summers there can get pretty hot, so be prepared ;)

I’m in upstate n y Come up I need help
Me too i need it please give the web site how i find that please
I'm in my quarterlife crisis right now and I get really anxious about my future (where I'll live and career mostly). I'm struggling through my master degree, getting it done to have at least one diploma that has some value in my field.
After watching your video and some others on the wwoofing topic, I really want to give it a try in like 1.5y after I graduate. I did an exchabge year in Japan so going back there for 6mth st least would be awesome, aswell as wwoofing in Australia for 6mth at least. Thanks a lot for your input!! ❤️
You’re so not alone in this. Most everyone goes through a period of life uncertainty/reevaluation. I myself have been through several!😉 It will probably feel really good to get a degree under your belt and I applaud you for the discipline it takes to do that. I hope you have a fabulous trip to celebrate. It will be the closing of one chapter and the opening of another!
I’m going to WWOOF next year and this video was very informative thanks!!!
Awesome to hear Miesha! Have a great time😁🌱
Hey did you ever start wwoofing
Thank you for your authentic content and manner, Kat!
Thank you for the support Floo!🙏🏼
Thanks for this video, I'm planning on doing this next summer and I had no idea how all of this works so this video helped a lot
That’s so great to hear Dillon! I hope you have a fun and fulfilling experience WWOOFing😄
I'm 9 mins in and resonate all of which you're saying. I'm woofing now in FL and it's good. I'm fortunate for it for specific reasons :)
Thank you! And I'm so stoked that you are having a good time👍🏼😁
I felt so much light from this video and from your experiences. Thank you so much for sharing this (: Hawaii is where I'd like to start the journey of this. Finding a personal recommendation of a farm would be ideal for me. With being a very passionate vegan, organic fruit farms and being surrounded by work that supports my ethics would be something so refreshingly new and in alignment with my journey to experience. I've yet to travel alone and the idea is so liberating and fulfilling. And not in the sense of just going somewhere to experience the energy, land and culture, but to also be productive and make a positive influence as well by contributing. Money isn't the only form of currency, and woofing really emphasizes that. We all can be a community and sustain together to create an experience unmatched by money. I live very minimal already, and once you decide that owning things isn't appealing and fullfing to you anymore, money starts to loose its demand and appeal as a measure to possibilities
I love your additude gGadget! You are right, travelling alone is probably the most free one could feel. I really enjoyed my time with minimal possessions, operating via energy exchange, I somehow felt a deeper intimacy with my community.
Being a raw vegan I too had my preferences as to what an ideal farm would be. I knew for sure that I didn't want one with animals. I was looking for one that I'd be able to eat solely off the land, however wasn't able to find it, and as you heard me mention, it all worked out. The companionship, the land and the accommodations easily made up for that. It sounds like contribution is important to you. I hope that you can find a spot that will appreciate the purity of your intentions. I trust you will align with what is right for you. You have a beautiful outlook! I too feel your light😌✨
Oh my gosh, you are so sweet. That weed story was adorable 😂 Thank you so much for the info! I'm looking to do more traveling and I love the idea of learning how to farm and garden along the way. I'll probably watch this video again and take notes. You're awesome! Best of wishes in all that you do 😊🙏
Thank you Danielle! Have a great time on all your adventures💕🙏🏼

Great video Kat! I just subbed, what an AWESOME life you are having :).
Thanks William! Sending some awesome your way😉
Frankly nice to meet other people and volunteering on farms is a nice thing to me
Yes, the social aspect of it was one of the best parts to me!
Thank you for the run down.
I, as many also did not know where/ how to start this journey.
My pleasure Matty! Happy to help out☺️
That's a great tip. I didn't know such thing as WWOOF, HelpX, or Workaway until I watched your video. It is a nice way to save money on a trip. I would like to visit north of arctic circle next summer if I can come up with enough money to travel and find a cheap place to stay there. I cross my fingers finding a nice place to stay cheaply through searching on WWOOF, Workaway, or HelpX.
+Hiroyuki K I'm crossing my fingers for ya too Hiroyuki!😉
Dope video! that background music tho, didn't realize it until half way through the video I was wondering why i was getting amped while watching this
Nice! I think it's a fun tune as well😉🤘🏼🎶
I ended it falling into woofing when I was 21 and it was such a life changing experience!
Oh amazing! I share in that with you. I’m so glad you had such a positive experience😊

First time in This channel and i have to say this is incredibly helpful. I 've thinking of going abroad and i had some questions that you have answered on this video. This encourages me to keep saving up money.
Last thing, i'd like to know where you are from, because i am also interested in going to a country where i am forced to communicate in english so i could brush up on my english skills.
Thanks for sharing this!

So great to hear Robinson! I hope you find a good spot. Happy travels😊
Thx:)
Ha ha...New bugs...Love it! lol I'm an avid gardener and am no longer squeamish about bugs/insects anymore. I actually got over arachnophobia from being a full time gardener. Still jump to high heaven when I see the occasional snake though. I also see soooo many bee, wasp, hornet species etc. and learned so much about them. I don't grow huge gardens anymore but love growing and gardening so much. Now my kids are grown and moved away. I look forward to trying WWOOF. :0)
Yeah gardening will desensitize you to bugs for sure. I chuckled at your comment about snakes😆 They can certainly be startling. One of the neat thing about working with plants is learning about each bug, their value and consequently developing an appreciation for them🙂
Thank you so much!! ❤️ this video was so real
✨💜
Yeah now i know WWOOF...this will be a new interest. 😍
Right on👍🏼

+Sabrina Lefort Thanks Sabrina Sunshine☺️ Enjoy your adventures!
Great info, thanks for sharing! 💖🌟
I so appreciate your love-filled comment☺️
Something that concerned about is how to deal with my current housing. While you’re gone, do you leave your rent paid? Do you legitimately move out while your gone and then find a new place when you go home? What about whatever job you may have back home? I currently work and am in college so I’m not sure I would even have the time to do this. What do you think, kat ?
Good question. That’s really going to depend on your personal situation. Perhaps now is not the best time for you. Maybe consider Wwoofing for your next summer vacation or for after you have graduated. Alternatively, consider doing it for a short time, like two weeks - That way you can maintain your job and housing. You may want to sublet your place while you are gone, or if it’s for a longer period of travel, maybe moving your things into storage (or a friend’s house) and finding a new place upon return would better suit you. I have another video on travel that may help answer some of your questions👉🏼 ruclips.net/video/1aZbELv17S0/видео.html
WOOFer here. I was in Claddaghduff in Connemmarra. Most terrific experience
Wonderful to hear!👏🏼

You’re so welcome, I wish you well on your travels!
This video is so helpful!!! Thank you so much !! I'm 18 in my senior year and I'm really considering. For a full year is that a option ?
Hi Carlos, I think WWOOFing is a fantastic option for a post high school gap year! I have heard of farms offering year long stays, yes. Each farm is different though so you’ll have to email your potential hosts and ask.
Hey Kat, loved this video. Thanks for sharing all that information. I have been seriously planning on wwoofing next year and I had one question though. Honestly, do you even get to travel and explore other parts of the country you're visiting or do you just work on the farm all day? Because I am interested in exploring and travelling as much as I am interested in learning about organic farming so I would like to do both and not just be engaged in farm work all day.
+Samyuktaa Chawla Hi Samyuktaa, great question. I have to say that every farm is different in that regard. One place that I was at was 7am-noon, Monday to Friday and another place was 8am-3pm Monday to Friday for example. A third place I was at was only 20hours a week, but they didn't provide food. Some farms will allow you to work intensely for a bit and then have a week off.
Asking about the hours per week and their willingness to accommodate your desires is something to inquire about with each farm manager during the application process.
kat green that was quite helpful..thanks a bunch!! :)
Hey Samyukta are you woofing in anywhere in India ?
Thank you for this video it was so helpful 🍍😊😊
I’m so glad to hear! Thank you for that reflection💗

Why thank you Amanda👩🏼🌾
wwoofing makes healthy soil, healthy food, Healthy body, love it !
It really does! My time WWOOFing was some of the most balanced I've felt. Healthy in mind, body & spirit😌
I just found WWOOF 30 min ago and this is the first video I'm watching over personal experiences. Thank you! I'm nervous about this, but I never thought I'd find such an amazing opportunity- it is cppied from Jacob Rodrigueze as it is same to my cpmment.
great video! i thought it would be too long but it's just info-packed. Question: do you speak any other languages? did you experience any language barriers? I want to wwoof in s.am. but i don't speak Spanish 😬
I only speak English!🙊 Nowadays you might be able to get away with it seeing how predominant English is and how many translation apps there are. But, I will say, it can be seen as pretty disrespectful to wander into a country and expect the locals to accommodate you. Taking some time to learn about the culture and language beforehand will go a long way.
That sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing this :-)
+Mss Plantiful My pleasure! It is a really amazing program😉 Wishing you lots of fun adventures!

Ooh that sounds like a lovely dream, I hope you find a good match Ivona! 🌱🙏🏼🌎
We will go together ivona if you don't mind send me your Facebook
Thanks for such a really helpful video! I noted that you said you WWOOFed somewhere where you were the only WWOOFer and you were mainly doing work in their backyard. This is similar to what I'm going to be doing this summer in Spain. I was wondering what was your experience like being on your own and did you ever get bored? haha, thanks so much!
I didn't get bored, no, but every person is going to be different with this right? For myself I was coming out of a long time of being in school and therefore around a lot of people on a consistent basis. I was looking for a period of solitude to balance this out. I did make an effort to explore the area and I also had internet so I was able to stay connected with others. Enjoy your summer in Spain!❤️

@@katgreenvideo okay thanks anyway
I am just looking into woofing , not sure if it is something I will actually pursue. Can you browse the different woofing options without paying the fee?
You should be able to browse a little, but the info accessible for each farm is limited until you get the membership. Once you get that, you can read their full page.
Hi, thank you for making this!! Was there a reason that you chose to do farms in the US? I am considering starting out w the program overseas, is it better to try it local first?
The first farms I WWOOFed at were in Canada and local for me, the ones following were international. I don’t think though that’s it’s necessary to do in such an order. Where does your heart want to be??
Your video was great covered many aspects but i was just wondering who pays for the plane ticket to the country you are going to
You (the WWOOFer) pays for your plane ticket and other travel costs. In some cases the host may offer to pick you up from the airport.
I was just wondering, how much money would you recommend having on hand? I know it depends on where and how long you'll be there but did you find yourself paying for a lot of things out of pocket?
There are too many variables to really answer this.. where are you going, what are your priorities, what are your food requirements etc.
Hey Kat, just wondering when after you sign up if the farms tell you if you will be with other WOOFers or not. I love meeting new people and would preferably like to work with others!
Hi Pete, you first sign up for the membership. This will give you access to all the farm profiles in your selected region. From there you can read their profiles to find out how many WWOOFers they host at a time. If it's not mentioned you can contact them via email to ask. Signing up to the WWOOF website does not sign you up to a farm. You have to arrange that with them directly.
Thanks Kat!! Just applied to multiple farms in Italy! :)
Hey there. Me and partner are planning to be skoolie dwellers and are wondering if we could park our short bus on the land? We would LOVE to do this before applying for membership.
Oh that is such a rad idea! I imagine that a number of farms would be quite into that. It's beneficial to a host as they typically have a good amount of unused land and then you wouldn't be occupying their other shelters. Each farm is different though so you will need to purchase the membership and then contact them directly to ask. Unfortunately I don't see a way around that.
me: watching this in 2021 hahhaha but this was such a good & informative video!! i definitely will try this out
I know right, not the most realistic time to travel🤦🏼♀️ Here’s hoping that globally we’ll regain some level of health & freedom in the near future! In the meantime, WWOOFing may still be possible for some. Try exploring your local WWOOF host profiles.
Thank you for the information! It was very educational. :)
I'm so happy it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to say so Jim :)
Hey Kat!
Thank you so much for putting up this video!!
Do you know, what kind of Visum I need to wwoof in the US as a German?
Hi Madison, sorry I don’t know the particulars of visas for European travelers. My guess is that a standard travel visa would suffice.
Ok Thaknk you!!
I was wondering after you schedule a wwoofing location do you book a plane ticket and just go or do they help you with the plane ticket? Also do you have any information about bringing animals?
I’ve never heard of a farm helping with a plane ticket. Typically wwoofers make their own travel arrangements.
You’d have to contact the farm host directly to ask if they’re willing to let you bring a pet.
Can you tell me if there is a place that there are reviews on these farms especially if it’s not a good place to go to. Like people‘s experiences with these farms. I will only be in the United States. This is a awesome video. I just retired and I am a very healthy 66-year-old and would love to see the United States this way. I’m going solo. And I love to garden but I live in an apartment so it’s hard to do.
Hi Kathy. You have to sign up for a WWOOF USA membership to read farm reviews wwoofusa.org/how-it-works/be-wwoofer
is there any women or girls of POC that have done this? I would love to see or hear about your experiences
