  • So far we've built a squirrel feeder, a bat house, and two bird houses, so I though tit was about time we added a bird feeder to the list. I decided to build a stereotypical looking feeder because I wanted onw that had plenty of standing room. We have a large variety of song birds on our property so I needed to make sure there was plenty of room for a number of different birds at one time. I decided to build the bird feeder out of cedar fence pickets because not only are they affordable but cedar is a natural bug repellant and it holds up really well outdoors. This is a pretty easy woodworking project that you can knock out over the weekend and so far we are really enjoying ours. I hope this video gives you a few ideas for your own bird feeder. Thanks for watching!!

    Cedar fence pickets - I haven’t seen those at home D, prolly need to go to a lumber mill?

    • @boydstongrove
      @boydstongrove  7 месяцев назад

      I guess it depends on the area. Here in Jax. FL every Home Depot has pallets of them, But a lumber yard may have some, if not, maybe rough cut cedar boards.

    Nice, where does the rain water go?

    • @boydstongrove
      @boydstongrove  Год назад

      Great question! The roof overhangs the base area just enough to keep it from filling with water, plus the lip around the edge is pretty shallow. Yes, water does get on the food, but we have a lot of birds so the feeder gets emptied pretty quick and the birds don’t seem to mind the occasional wet day.

    Can the squirrels get to this by climbing the pole?

      Like you wouldn’t believe!! This has made me a hater of squirrels! If you know of any good deterrents let me know, lol.

      Me this is about one of the best tutorials to build a birdfeeder. I wanna make a couple, then send them to my one and three-year-old niece and nephew in Texas. That way they could paint them.
      A few questions…no a lot questions, and/or comments
      The portable part is actually brilliant
      The roof idea with the springs inside, so it has tension, but can still be moved to fill it is another great idea
      Squirrels are a pain in the ass and they can jump like son of a guns. I was thinking how the squirrels may get in your feeder. If they’re jumping from the ground up into it, then maybe make it taller
      If they are climbing up the fence post pole you used the diameter is small that way they can wrap their legs around it and shimmy up it so I’m suggesting a bigger diameter of something put around the pole maybe a fat piece of PVC pipe but maybe they could dig their claws into that. Hope you get the idea of where to go with that. Maybe a four or 5 inch piece of stainless steel tin circular slid over the fence, post bowl that way they can’t wrap their legs around it and shimmy up.
      I don’t have the luxury of a workshop or a garage that’s why I haven’t done anything like this. I did not realize they make Brad nailers that are battery now I am interested in doing this. I did not want to have to buy an air compressor the whole 9 yards, you have a make and model number on that Brad nailer
      Overall, it was an awesome video. Thanks for the help.

    How can I make one without buying $1,000 worth of fancy tools ?

    • @boydstongrove
      @boydstongrove  Год назад

      haha, well, all the cuts including the plexi glass can be cut with a simple jig saw. I used my drill press for the post piece but a regular drill would work just fine. When I make cuts lengthways with a jig saw (or hand saw), I always do those first, before cutting it to length.
