I wouldn't say Natalie stupid, I would say if she's not making the best choices. Like Ramit said, it is very hard to change, even if you want to. And she did change some, Change doesn't always happen overnight. She has a lot to change, but sometimes people don't want to do it. It's her life and to insult somebody about it is very judgmental. We are all on our own journey in life! Oh, I just wish I had that kind of money, and I would deal with it differently, but that's me. I'm working on it, but being disabled, it's a real struggle. Everyone's background is different, which means our perspective is going to be different.
You skipped over the most important info. How is she getting a $8,000 monthly return on a $1.2 million investments? In this market? And that's not even including the $1,000+/month advisor fees!
The purpose of showing Nathalie was to show us, regardless of how much we make, of we can't manage our money today, getting more money wont automatically indoctrinate us with financial intelligence. Her story is not uncommon.

This is true. There are tons of people with less money than her that are in debt because they have similar compulsive needs. The only difference is that the poor people rely on credit cards more often to get what they want.

There were plenty of red flags in her questionable finances and her interview comments. He could have cut bait but chose to continue then not continue.
At 20:46 she says, "nothing else makes me happy," which struck me as very sad. I hope for her sake that she can examine why shopping is such a compulsion for her. It's clear that her spending will continue to negatively affect her relationship with her daughter. Kudos to Ramit for being such a class act.
Is there no way in which shopping is a valid expression of enjoying yourself ? Self expression and how you show up in the world .. joy and confidence.. None of this sounds sad to me . Natalie beams with joy and self acceptance and I love that in people

I absolutely feel for Natalie’s daughter. The daughter had mentioned in a Netflix episode that she would like to have a college fund. But it seems Natalie got a car for herself and her two sons. I hope the daughter doesn’t take these to heart.
The fact that the mom uses all of the child support on herself and not for the child 😢😢😢 plus that baby is almost past 18 years old, unless if it’s alimony, that income will not last forever
I know Ramit wants Nathalie to get rid of the financial advisor, however, in her case, since she is going to spend down every cent, assuming the financial advisor can actually hold the money hostage so she will have 2.2M forever, I think the 1.5% is a very fair price to pay.
Well, I would be paying a financial advisor 1.5% who can get me consistently over 11% return on only $1.2m invested, which is what would have to be happening to pay the advisory fee plus tax whithholding.
She missed a great opportunity.I admire Ramit’s grace .. The whole time I was thinking of what an incredible daughter she has raised who seems to have good values … but mom get it together lol !You are much more than shopping and material possessions!! This interview was so awkward. Remit, you did great. Your guest in thr other hand was rude, awkward, and took this whole thing as a joke. Ahh yes the "child support" lady...this lady really got under my skin , Im a father that pays child support I thought to myself " if I was her ex husband i'd be pissed seeing her wasteful spending " Anyways, her ex should take her back to court and show that episode as evidence that she is getting way more than she should! she wasted so much money on that restaurant idea too, Her daughter was way more mature and mindful of her moms situation.
Considering the money is "Child support" not Alimony. That money is to be used on the care of her children, not on her. My husband's ex spent most of the child support she rec'd on herself as well

@@deniseselman6276 california alimony ends remarriage, and she recently remarried. It's not clear if it was actually alimony or even child support since the money was coming from a Trust. There is/was a Trust in her name or at least in her name, which the money could have been coming from. her money is just very strange and leads to lots more questions than what was provided.
She's totally depressed and it is very sad. I think you see glimpses of her sadness about it and she saw it on Netflix. But she needs to get help and it's not something that's going to change overnight. I was a bit of a compulsive shopper in my early 20s, nowhere near this extreme though. I'm in my 50s now she's totally depressed and covering it up by spending more. The way she talks about shopping is what compulsive shoppers say. Natalie said that she wish she didn't spend all the money on clothing and bought real estate. Which she did end up doing and bought a house in Bali. The rent from the house in Bali actually is paying her rent in Beverly Hills. Now she could find a place that's cheaper in rent and actually make a profit, and buy another house in Bali, and split the profit for upkeep and profit, but that's her prerogative.
Oh my god I gasped when she said she spent everything! I’m with Ramit, where is the hidden camera crew?! I guess it really is hard to change. I can completely see why Ramit couldn’t work with Nathalie anymore, she’s addicted to spending and it’s such a persistent issue, she needs continued therapy to reframe her mind and change. It’s almost like how many hoarders resort back to hoarding after a deep clean if they don’t have continued support.

Because if I understand the law correctly Child support is only supposed to be spent on your children, housing, the vehicle, food, activities for the children, childcare, education, children's clothing etc. But if it's spousal support, she can spend that on whatever she wants. If it's the latter, she's in a lot of trouble!!!! She might even have to pay it back.
Ramit, you are amazing for showing this. Some people wouldn't have even published this interview. Your Netflix show revealed that our personal histories with money and our own choices and motivations play a major part in a possible transformation with our financial futures. People will only change when they want to and nothing can change that.
I enjoyed Ramit's take and POV on money in the series and on the podcast...it was enjoyable to watch. Nathalie's story is just not believable in terms of what is actually going on vs what she is trying to portay. Lots of things she stated on the show and the podcast just don't add up nor make sense to me. I think she rented the Ferrari on the netflix series by her driving ferrari down rodeo was fun comment, and she is basically faking it until making it. I think she is living far beyond her means and is just shuffling money/debt around. She is portraying a lifestyle that far exceeds her actual money. No one that has a $975k mortgage on a $2.2m house or even $4m house is spending $500k/yr on clothes. I just saw a lot of forced face smiling to portray an unrealistic image of a lifestyle that doesn't exist. I rewatched the series again, and Rami said if the $25k/mo child support goes away, which is wrong, because it is when since it will go away since it is child support. Episode 2 Nathalie actually said alimony, because she said the trust company lost the check or something. how does that even happen? Alimony makes more sense given her children's ages, but who knows. Plus, if alimony, now that she remarried, doesn't her alimony end now that she remarried? If it was $25k/mo in child support that means Rudy, her ex, would have to have been making something over $1.25m/yr, although I'm not sure how that would happen as a senior sales and designer plus $80k defunct vaping business at the time they got divorced. The numbers wouldn't add up for child support but alimony makes sense. wonder if the monthly money was coming from Nathalie's coco trust and she's just saying it is child support or alimony for some reason. What really doesn't make sense is the house she said she sold for $4m last year. Sales history for her house shows that she still actually owns the house, because she sold the house to herself from her Coco Trust for $4m, and the house is currently being offered fro $3,749,000. Ramit on the series said she had $957k mortgage left. The $2.2m number was very confusing both on the series and here, and was very specific. Wonder if $2.2m was what was remaining in her Trust and shell gaming the house was a way for her to cash out finance equivalent to get the $2.2m from the Trust. $8k/month investment income off of only $1.2m invested sounds like a ponzi scheme, that's on top of the $1k/month advisor fee, that means her "financial advisor" is earning her $9k/month on $1.2m investment. Actually it means he is earning her more than $9k/mo if you consider taxes. If this is the case, Ramit would be very wrong about her financial advisor. I'm hard pressed to find anyone making over $9k/mo on only $1.2m invested over the past year, which is what is essentially being claimed here. Sign me up. $8k/month on airbnb isn't realistic. That may be if her $500k villa in Bali is fully booked every day of every month, every year, not to mention $8k/month would have to be way more since Airbnb withholds 28-30% for taxes, doesn't it? Indonesia and US have a tax treaty, although Indonesia is honor system reporting, but the US most assuredly is not. What was really saddening was Nicole's comment about it being difficult for her mom to pay her college tuition...if $25k/mo child support and Nathalie had difficulty paying college tuition, there's something not right there.
I totally agree. And she did buy the house in Bali, which is a win! Change in behavior is a very hard thing to do and it doesn't happen overnight you're so right!
I hope that Nathalie enjoys her entire life, now and in the future. Her responses reminds me of people who deflect facts and feelings of embarrassment/shame/etc. by laughing it off, minimizing the issue, and saying these "fru fru" phrases about the universe and happiness. Tends to be an act, deep down, they know better and they're terrified. If she hits later stages of life and still does not address the underlying reason for her spending issue, then she's gonna maintain that spending habit and she will run out of time and money. You can always make more money as long as you are able minded and able bodied. Unfortunately, after a certain point, age is the great equalizer, and not in a good way (
It was cringe watching this lady and her barely transformation. I beleive at the rate she spends on wardrobe and depreciating assets, that she definitely spends above her means monthly. Not to mention in the Netflix doc it mentioned she gets a divorce settlement, trust fund of sorts at around 25k or so a month. Being that it's structured, I suspect that payment will at some point stop when her kid reaches a certain age, which I thought might have been brought up with her catch up show. This is huge as its the real money that's subsidizing and funding her lavish lifestyle right now, if /when that stops I see big problems in this lady's life unless she makes much better financial decisions. 500k in a year on a wardrobe is madness if it's not sustainable.
She is a compulsive shopper. Is the $26k child support or alimony? If it is child support, why isn’t the residual going to a trust fund for their education, a home. She tries to be fun and frivolous but the spending is an escape from her depression.
That's what I was wondering if it was alimony or spousal support and not child support. Because if it's child support, I think she's in a lot of trouble if I understand the law correctly. If it's alimony or spousal support, she can spend the money on whatever she wants. Child support it's for your kids not for frivolous spending.

2.2 mil is my fat fire number and some humans spend it on shopping. 😅😢 P.S. if I were a financial advisor and had to work with such an interesting client, I would charge double of what this hypothetical 'Chet' is charging. This is not an easy client to work with.

Chets love this kind of client, because she is the kind of client who will sign over complete discretionary authority to chet, chet loads up on third party annuities he can gain a commission on, the rake in the 1.5% management fee on things that are already internally managed and not have to do anything except drink espresso martinis on his yacht and have the automated system generate her quarterly documents, which she won't ever look at. Chets love financially ignorant clients who just want a fixed monthly income and couldn't care about anything else except the fixed monthly income check.
Child support usually doesn't last forever. Yet there was no discussion about when it ends or that it is supposed to be used for supporting the child. Why?
Although we are not rich, her mindset is the same one that my husband has about money. 💔😡💔😡 He uses all those phrases that she does and makes less than $70K per year. Make it make sense. His money addiction is food.
It’s all going to come crashing down at some point when child support ends. I imagine that her spending what is essentially their money is offensive to her children. Very sad that all that makes her happy is shopping.
I'm not going to judge her. My dad had the same addiction in terms of spending but it was gambling. For a stretch, I was buying historical documents. Then at some point I sat back, saw my dad's evil habits in me and just wanted to break it. Super grateful for videos like this and Ramit's programs.
My thing is child support has an expiration date. What’s the long term plan Natalie. While I can admire some aspects of her carefree loving life attitude, the reality of the situation is she’s setting herself up for failure in the long run.
Yes and no you're forgetting that she bought a house in Bali and that's income. Now granted she needs to rethink spending as much as she spending in rent. Because she could live in a cheaper place and be making a profit. Which, in turn she could buy another house and rent that out also.
@@Julie-rg3mb I'm aware of that. She has money from other sources besides Airbnb. And I think she has a family trust as well. It has nothing to do with her Ex. She talked about that on Netflix. I put the Airbnb essentially is paying for the rent on her house. She could find a cheaper house to rent and she was actually making profit, but she doesn't want to do that. That doesn't mean that she won't change her mind later. If you watch the episode of Netflix, she has cut back on her spending some...
What is she going to do when that $26,000.00 a month of child support ends. Go back and interview her a year after the child support payments have ended.

Wow I am speechless. I think the only thing that would wake her up is if child support stopped coming in and now she is responsible for making up the difference. At least her daughter has in interest learning and have a different view on money.

She sounds so empty that she fills it with stuff. She doesn't want to change because she doesn't know how to find her own self worth and she probably doesn't feel like she has any thing she can actually do so she spend money to gain value. Her self worth is wrapped up in materials things and it fuels her external validation. It's sad that she will get older and never find inner peace.

She has some guilt about it. You see it in the Netflix episode. She even says I wish I didn't spend all the money on clothing and invested in real estate. She's a compulsive spender.
This is not an issue of subsidy. She’s not happy. The addiction to shopping won’t be curtailed by the consequence of financial ruin until the very end. I wish her the best. First be happy.
I’m sorry… this is just SAD. The emotional spending is an addiction. We would not be laughing and cheering her on if this was an alcohol addiction. She is literally squandering MILLIONS of dollars away. I would also bet that she has a fractured relationship with the core people in her life UNLESS she is “buying” their love. Her daughter looked SO sad on the show. Clearly, she needs therapy BEFORE any real changes can happen with her finances. This is pitiful. It makes my stomach turn.
Ramit is being logical with facts and figures. But she isn’t into being reasonable. For her, it’s all about feelings, fun, spending. What I worry about is the limited resources on our planet and if more people consumed mindlessly like this, it’s scary. We seem to forget what enables all of this life. Our environment. This woman is dead set on making her daughter take care of her. Her daughter put her in the show bc she was worried about how her mom is going to make it too. My husband worries about his parents. They never think about how they are going to make it. He is so so stressed at 40, it’s unreal. She has no idea what she is doing to her child.
I think Nathalie could benefit from some therapy to figure out why she feels the need to spend the way she does. There's definitely something underneath this.
This may sound strange, but I have been trained to detect fake ''rich'' people in a long painful career in private investment banking. My radar is screaming when I listen to Nathalie. She has all the symptoms and I am ready to bet that most of what she claims to have or spend is complete fabrication. Just my two cents. Love Ramit though!

In this episode I would agree that Nathalie should use the financial advisor. Like she said she would rather have financial advisor than losing all her money. In the video we can clearly see Nathalie has a spending problems so for Nathalie to learn how to find a right ETF to invest is even harder to start with. Ramit shouldnt focus on too much and repetitive asking her to get rid of the advisor. Having the advisor to look after her fund is better than for her to spend it all. Not saying that having financial advisor is good but for her case it is better.

This helps me as an educator because I teach in a wealthy neighborhood, these children are my students. They move often, at different times in the school year, or they might vacation for weeks month in the middle of the school year, we have to figure out how to catch them up academically. It can be kind of a transient lifestyle for the kids

This episode made me laugh so much 😂😂 I love her, she’s honest. I don’t agree with her financial decisions. Eventually she will have to face the consequences of her actions. Looks like she doesn’t really have any debt and she does have steady income coming in. If she just scarifies a few years then maybe she can have more cash flow where she may not need to worry too much.
Why is it not mentioned though that the child support is for her children, not her shopping issue… I find it very disingenuous that she plays it off like it’s a “cute” habit. As someone who’s seen a parent blow money that was needed, there is real damage being done with this behavior. I feel sorrow for her children.
It's crazy that she's spending so much and with a little bit more planning and thought she could be living a lavish lifestyle AND be setting up her daughter for a great financial future. Her father's money is not guaranteed. He could go bankrupt or have several other kids that all have a claim to his fortune. Meanwhile, Nathalie is taking literal millions and spending them on fashion brands...

I don't understand why she was even on the show in the first place. She obviously has no interest in changing anything. Maybe she just wanted to show off on TV. If being a completely frivolous and wasteful spender is your idea of a rich life, I don't care. I just can't watch it.

I love Ramit's approach usually but I don't understand his obession about the financial advisor this time. The main issue about this woman is how she spends on clothes, recklessly, how she views money, how she uses the money for her child for herself... not that she spends 100k over 10yrs on Chet, and honestly I don't trust her to do better than him.

To me, she looks like she is dead inside. I think her shopping addiction is a way for her to fill whatever is missing, it’s a short term high that goes away fast which is why she has to shop more and more. She is getting 26k a month now for child support but what happens when they all turn 18? She’ll go from 42k a month to 16k a month or less (if the airbnb thing fails). I don’t see this working out well for her in the long term.

I know Ramit wants Nathalie to get rid of the financial advisor, however, in her case, since she is going to spend down every cent, assuming the financial advisor can actually hold the money hostage so she will have 2.2M forever, I think the 1.5% is a very fair price to pay.
Well, I would be paying a financial advisor 1.5% who can get me consistently over 11% return on only $1.2m invested, which is what would have to be happening to pay the advisory fee plus tax whithholding.

Ahh yes the "child support" lady...this lady really got under my skin , Im a father that pays child support I thought to myself " if I was her ex husband i'd be pissed seeing her wasteful spending " Anyways, her ex should take her back to court and show that episode as evidence that she is getting way more than she should! she wasted so much money on that restaurant idea too, Her daughter was way more mature and mindful of her moms situation.

@@deniseselman6276 california alimony ends remarriage, and she recently remarried. It's not clear if it was actually alimony or even child support since the money was coming from a Trust. There is/was a Trust in her name or at least in her name, which the money could have been coming from. her money is just very strange and leads to lots more questions than what was provided.
She said shopping was the only thing that made her happy. That was worth exploring.
She's totally depressed and it is very sad. I think you see glimpses of her sadness about it and she saw it on Netflix. But she needs to get help and it's not something that's going to change overnight. I was a bit of a compulsive shopper in my early 20s, nowhere near this extreme though. I'm in my 50s now she's totally depressed and covering it up by spending more. The way she talks about shopping is what compulsive shoppers say.
Natalie said that she wish she didn't spend all the money on clothing and bought real estate. Which she did end up doing and bought a house in Bali. The rent from the house in Bali actually is paying her rent in Beverly Hills.
Now she could find a place that's cheaper in rent and actually make a profit, and buy another house in Bali, and split the profit for upkeep and profit, but that's her prerogative.

I can completely see why Ramit couldn’t work with Nathalie anymore, she’s addicted to spending and it’s such a persistent issue, she needs continued therapy to reframe her mind and change. Because if I understand the law correctly Child support is only supposed to be spent on your children, housing, the vehicle, food, activities for the children, childcare, education, children's clothing etc. But if it's spousal support, she can spend that on whatever she wants. Your Netflix show revealed that our personal histories with money and our own choices and motivations play a major part in a possible transformation with our financial futures. People will only change when they want to and nothing can change that.

I enjoyed Ramit's take and POV on money in the series and on the podcast...it was enjoyable to watch.
Nathalie's story is just not believable in terms of what is actually going on vs what she is trying to portay. Lots of things she stated on the show and the podcast just don't add up nor make sense to me. I think she rented the Ferrari on the netflix series by her driving ferrari down rodeo was fun comment, and she is basically faking it until making it. I think she is living far beyond her means and is just shuffling money/debt around. She is portraying a lifestyle that far exceeds her actual money. No one that has a $975k mortgage on a $2.2m house or even $4m house is spending $500k/yr on clothes. I just saw a lot of forced face smiling to portray an unrealistic image of a lifestyle that doesn't exist.
I rewatched the series again, and Rami said if the $25k/mo child support goes away, which is wrong, because it is when since it will go away since it is child support. Episode 2 Nathalie actually said alimony, because she said the trust company lost the check or something. how does that even happen? Alimony makes more sense given her children's ages, but who knows. Plus, if alimony, now that she remarried, doesn't her alimony end now that she remarried? If it was $25k/mo in child support that means Rudy, her ex, would have to have been making something over $1.25m/yr, although I'm not sure how that would happen as a senior sales and designer plus $80k defunct vaping business at the time they got divorced. The numbers wouldn't add up for child support but alimony makes sense. wonder if the monthly money was coming from Nathalie's coco trust and she's just saying it is child support or alimony for some reason.
What really doesn't make sense is the house she said she sold for $4m last year. Sales history for her house shows that she still actually owns the house, because she sold the house to herself from her Coco Trust for $4m, and the house is currently being offered fro $3,749,000. Ramit on the series said she had $957k mortgage left. The $2.2m number was very confusing both on the series and here, and was very specific. Wonder if $2.2m was what was remaining in her Trust and shell gaming the house was a way for her to cash out finance equivalent to get the $2.2m from the Trust.
$8k/month investment income off of only $1.2m invested sounds like a ponzi scheme, that's on top of the $1k/month advisor fee, that means her "financial advisor" is earning her $9k/month on $1.2m investment. Actually it means he is earning her more than $9k/mo if you consider taxes. If this is the case, Ramit would be very wrong about her financial advisor. I'm hard pressed to find anyone making over $9k/mo on only $1.2m invested over the past year, which is what is essentially being claimed here. Sign me up.
$8k/month on airbnb isn't realistic. That may be if her $500k villa in Bali is fully booked every day of every month, every year, not to mention $8k/month would have to be way more since Airbnb withholds 28-30% for taxes, doesn't it? Indonesia and US have a tax treaty, although Indonesia is honor system reporting, but the US most assuredly is not.
What was really saddening was Nicole's comment about it being difficult for her mom to pay her college tuition...if $25k/mo child support and Nathalie had difficulty paying college tuition, there's something not right there.

I hope that Nathalie enjoys her entire life, now and in the future. Her responses reminds me of people who deflect facts and feelings of embarrassment/shame/etc. by laughing it off, minimizing the issue, and saying these "fru fru" phrases about the universe and happiness. Tends to be an act, deep down, they know better and they're terrified.
If she hits later stages of life and still does not address the underlying reason for her spending issue, then she's gonna maintain that spending habit and she will run out of time and money. You can always make more money as long as you are able minded and able bodied. Unfortunately, after a certain point, age is the great equalizer, and not in a good way (

After watching the Netflix show…Nathalie, a year later, didn’t surprise me!
It was cringe watching this lady and her barely transformation. I beleive at the rate she spends on wardrobe and depreciating assets, that she definitely spends above her means monthly. Not to mention in the Netflix doc it mentioned she gets a divorce settlement, trust fund of sorts at around 25k or so a month. Being that it's structured, I suspect that payment will at some point stop when her kid reaches a certain age, which I thought might have been brought up with her catch up show. This is huge as its the real money that's subsidizing and funding her lavish lifestyle right now, if /when that stops I see big problems in this lady's life unless she makes much better financial decisions. 500k in a year on a wardrobe is madness if it's not sustainable.

Chets love financially ignorant clients who just want a fixed monthly income and couldn't care about anything else except the fixed monthly income check.

I'm not going to judge her. My dad had the same addiction in terms of spending but it was gambling. For a stretch, I was buying historical documents. Then at some point I sat back, saw my dad's evil habits in me and just wanted to break it. Super grateful for videos like this and Ramit's programs.
My thing is child support has an expiration date. What’s the long term plan Natalie. While I can admire some aspects of her carefree loving life attitude, the reality of the situation is she’s setting herself up for failure in the long run.
Yes and no you're forgetting that she bought a house in Bali and that's income. Now granted she needs to rethink spending as much as she spending in rent. Because she could live in a cheaper place and be making a profit. Which, in turn she could buy another house and rent that out also.

I put the Airbnb essentially is paying for the rent on her house. She could find a cheaper house to rent and she was actually making profit, but she doesn't want to do that. That doesn't mean that she won't change her mind later.

In this episode I would agree that Nathalie should use the financial advisor. Like she said she would rather have financial advisor than losing all her money. In the video we can clearly see Nathalie has a spending problems so for Nathalie to learn how to find a right ETF to invest is even harder to start with. Ramit shouldnt focus on too much and repetitive asking her to get rid of the advisor. Having the advisor to look after her fund is better than for her to spend it all. Not saying that having financial advisor is good but for her case it is better.

This helps me as an educator because I teach in a wealthy neighborhood, these children are my students. They move often, at different times in the school year, or they might vacation for weeks month in the middle of the school year, we have to figure out how to catch them up academically. It can be kind of a transient lifestyle for the kids

If she just scarifies a few years then maybe she can have more cash flow where she may not need to worry too much.
Why is it not mentioned though that the child support is for her children, not her shopping issue… I find it very disingenuous that she plays it off like it’s a “cute” habit. For Nathalie- There is NO help for the “don’t wants”
To me, she looks like she is dead inside. I think her shopping addiction is a way for her to fill whatever is missing, it’s a short term high that goes away fast which is why she has to shop more and more. She is getting 26k a month now for child support but what happens when they all turn 18? She’ll go from 42k a month to 16k a month or less (if the airbnb thing fails). I don’t see this working out well for her in the long term.
