- Just finished The Cuphead Show and I was really thrilled when I saw these cartoon references. I still haven't seen anyone talk about them yet so I made this compilation of some of the ones I spotted.
I know this is a pretty random video but I love Cuphead so much so just bear with me.
1:05 never understood why people feel the need to whistle in creepy places it just attracts all the creepy stuff to you
It’s a coping mechanism. Cup head kept saying to him “Ghosts aren’t real” so he tried to believe that and relieve some of the pressure.
to fill the silence mainly
Fun fact oliver wallace did the whistling part when ichabod crane is whistling
The worst part is when you stop... and the whistling continues
As a pink elephants enthusiast, I screamed when I saw that one scene with the ghosts marching
I know right!? Get It at the first look!
It’s also my favorite episode
WHA? How can ANYONE be a PINK ELEPHANTS Enthusiast? They Scared Me Half to Death when I was Little. I Had a Small Night-Light Plugged into the Wall just down next to My Bed and it wasn't very Bright. I SWEAR I Saw what Looked like a Pink Elephant Peeking-Out from Behind My Dresser Mirror. It Creeped Me out so Much I put a Lamp on My Dresser which Lights Up My Bedroom enough that it's Bright but not too Bright. More of a Light Golden Fluorescent Glow Brighter than a Kerosene Lamp. I Still Sleep with My Dresser Lamp on just as a Force of Habit. Trust Me. when You're around 3 to 5 Years Old those Things can Scare You so much They'll Scare You until You're around 9 - 11 and Finally get over the Fear and can Finally Rest... (Also other than the Pink Elephants from Dumbo I Scared to Death of the Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh. Which is Ironic because My Little Wall Night-Light had Lumpy from Pooh's Heffalump Movie and also I had Never seen Lumpy in that Movie cause I Only Saw Him in Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie...)

@@STARTIXX OMG WELCOME TO THE SCARED TO DEATH OF PINK ELEPHANTS, HEFFALUMPS AND WOOZLES CLUB MY FRIEND!!!
These references are wonderful because they’re not clear copies of the older animation. They are clear inspirations with their own movements and direction.
The pink elephants from Dumbo just unlocked a hidden memory. I remember how uncanny that segment was in the film when I was a kid, and coming back to it as an adult hits so different. It all makes sense.
One of the animators did psychedelics and drew what he saw.
Seriously any of these references just makes me feel old
Working while high, only at Disney...
Why are people scared of pink colored elephants
is this the new "bad" thing leftists are trying to cancel or some shit
@@HitTheFan16 I believe you didn't see Dumbo as a kid?
@@SomeGuyWithABlueMask I remember the elephant with the big stupid ears (dumbo) but I feel like pink colored elephants are no scarier than dumbo himself
y'all scared of the color pink?
I knew those scenes looked familiar. Either way, I really enjoyed the show, and I can't wait to watch the next season.
Hey Ashley! Long time no see. Which episode's your favorite?
@@RayleeAnne Mostly the ones that go together.
CarnEvil
Roll the Dice
Sweater Off Dead
Sweater Luck Next Time
Nice ones, my favorite is 'Ghosts Aint Real' mostly because it referenced my favorite cartoons and I like the blind spectre cameo
@@RayleeAnne walrus is a Rotoscope Walrus
@@RayleeAnne did see the scenes that familiar the comic that mugman break his handle
It’s kinda weird cuz I thought cuphead felt more similar to fleisher style of cartoons, so seeing this video predominantly Disney references surprises me. Nevertheless, really cool
Which is weird, considering Disney and Fleisher were sworn enemies.
Well cuphead is a mix of both cuz remember its main thng is referncing rubberhose animation so of course disney is going to appear i actlly want to share a cartoon tht may hav inspired alot of the game from disney called silly symphony hell' bell u can see how much the creators of cuphead got the inspiration
Yeah they didn't want to go full Fleischer sadly. It's best to consider the show a completely separate thing from the game - I mean, even stuff like plot setup is different. I've learned it's best not to be annoyed because kids like it so its inspiring new artists.
The game had a combination of both Fleisher and Disney styles. Cuphead and Mugman are heavily based on Mickey and Oswald, while many of the enemies are based on Fleischer cartoons. So I guess that's why the cartoon has references from both styles too.
Probably because the Disney references are easier to spot in this modern age where they're such a giant
There is also an appearance of Bimbo himself in the first episode, appart from other characters during the show that are very similar to Felix the cat and Oswald the lucky rabbit
When I saw Bimbo I was like “ *WAIT* there’s _NO WAY_ they were able to animate a cameo of him!” He looked just like Betty Boop’s pal, Bimbo the Dog!
I KNEW IT WAS HIM!!
Plus there's a background character that looks a bit similar to lesser known character Flip the Frog
I saw Oswald

Unlike Modern Cartoons these days, these guys truly did their homework on reliving the classics again!
I think that's because cartoons nowadays just try to be adventure time, gravity falls, anime or family guy
What’s wrong with the Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse on Disney+, and the Looney Tunes cartoons on HBOMax?
@@TwilightLink77 Nothin' wrong with those shows, I like'em, Its just most shows rather be "meed-based" or wannabe versions of Gravity Falls or Family Guy, etc.
@@wahoo8683 most of the shows that try to be like gravity falls have done a good job with it like amphibia and owl house season 2
@@BobbinRobbin777 what’s the problem with a cartoon wanting to do their own thing?
Dang, the guys who made Cuphead really knows how to release the classics.
Man, this Cuphead show looks intriguing, they should make a game out of it
at this time Cuphead Show made on the game : ok.
But I understood you, you meant, probably, a separate game based on the series, not the game.

That Way, The Cuphead Show Will Have The Most-Amusing Cartoony Slapstick Ever !
I hoped I wasn't the only one who caught the clear Sleepy Hollow homage.
Me too😁
When my mom saw my brother and I watching Cuphead she legitimately thought we were watching a really old cartoon lmao
I had to tell her that it just came out a few days ago
wow, they really managed to emulate that old style of animation in a modern way. it’s insane to me that they animated this show using a mix of puppet animation and hand-drawn frames
Dang, it’s amazing how they’ve referenced the classic cartoons. Amazing!
Yep, because probably the art style fits well. Just like the other cartoons that have episodes of that style
It makes me happy to see all of the old cartoon references. Especially the ones specifically from Fleischer, as mentioned in a game theory who became overshadowed by Disney.
I’m also fairly sure that they put bimbo as a background character in the first episode
I was mildly disappointed they didn't think to put Night on Bald Mountain over the Devil painting the fence. But I love everything about this show.
regarding Nigth on the bald mountain, you can see one of the ghost horse riders from Fantasia in the graveyard episode :D
I love how I correctly guessed the skeletons and paint brushes references before you revealed them. Though tbt I think anyone would figure out the brushes one due to the music cue with it. The minute I heard that bit of score I knew exactly where it was from.
same
skeletons are at least known because of memes. At least, I first learned about them because of memes 😅
@@ChicaTrump ♩SPOOKY SCARY SKELETONS♩
@@rockhistoria2537 Yes yes yes yes yes yes
I think these r two of the references i caught, but i caught more and some not even in the video
Cuphead Show Animators: “So how many references do you want again?”
Cuphead Show Director: “Yes!”
The moment Cuphead and Mugman were in the haunted house, I immediately recognized the Bimbo reference. It’s so satisfying to see them doing their homework and it pays off so well. I wanted the skeletons to do spooky scary skeletons so bad. These types of cartoons are so special because of how creative and expressive they are. I love how it’s making a comeback with the Animaniacs new stuff, Looney Tunes, Cuphead, and how Steven Universe had the amazing Spinel. This animation style is just so dope and trippy (seriously watch some of it when drunk/high it’s awesome) and is sooo much better than CG. Sure, what Disney makes now is great with how realistic it is but at the same time, I don’t want realistic. I love the slapstick and craziness of cartoons. I’m 21 but I don’t care how old you have to be to enjoy cartoons
The Cuphead Show Needs Tex Avery Wild Takes and Looney Tunes Gags
The homages to the Fleischer Animation style were absolutely beautiful to behold. So awesome to see love and respect given to some of the pioneering works of animation after so many years.
When a Netflix series and an Indie Studio do a better job at representing Animation Legacy than the Mega Corporation that practically runs the industry
I'm surprised more people don't see that King Dice is an homage to the great Cab Calloway.
Especially when the Minnie the Moocher cartoon used his recording of the song and rotoscoped from his dancing.
My dad always likes to watch old cartoons, so I got most of the references.
Tbh, it was relieving seeing references in a show that weren't some cringy pop culture reference... 🤷🏼♀️
2:28 Grim: Why its the Skeleton Dance! I haven’t done this in 300 Years!
There’s also a scene when the devil was slithering like a snake on the ground in the first episode. I’m pretty sure that’s a reference to the first grinch animated short film when the grinch did that exact same thing.
He slithered and slunk
this is a reference to his phase in the game. But it is possible that that phase is actually inspired by the Grinch.
I really like that these guys went on to reference such classic cartoons! So Great.
I immediately recognized the Snow White one and couldn’t stop laughing
In the Devil’s intro song, I can’t be the only one who also noticed the reference to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” from the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas when the devil is “slithering” along the floors? I know it’s not the golden age of animation but it felt very much inspired by said scene.
Yeees! That was awesome 😄❤
2:30 I think we all noticed
Who the fuck didnt
3:45 tbh i know it's not exactly a classic but i thought of the 'Here Comes Treble' Animaniacs episode
I love that Fantasia reference 3:55
I was honestly was scared when the cuphead show came out. I didn't want it to be another failed show. I was far from disappointed
3:00 I was seriously expecting that one scene in over the garden wall for this one
2:17 parry
ALL
I noticed almost all of these. I also wanted to point out the scene when they were going through all the doors. Now THAT was something to see.
The very beginning of the intro is actually a reference to The Old Man of the Mountain, now that's dedication!
That makes sense! The whole entrance of King Dice is a loving homage to Cab Calloway’s rotoscoped performances for Fleischer’s earlier Betty Boop cartoons, and “The Old Man of the Mountain” was his best performance for them!
As someone who right now is going to animation school, I just gotta say how much I adore all these references. And just how *important* these old animations were to animation history and progress. My teacher (when we had history class) showed us basically of these. So seeing cuphead reference them is like giving a big loveletter to all of animation overall. ❤❤
1:57 I've seen the Lonesome Ghosts and it's good, and the reference is clear
I love the reference of the "pink elephants" I always liked that scene since my childhood.
One that really struck me was Mickey Mouse with the ghosts coming out from under the door. I still have the disc of all those original shorts!
The only one I actually caught on my first viewing was the Skeleton Dance reference, because I've seen that short dozens of times lol.
Although, and I might be reaching here, I really like to think the part moments before that where Cuphead and Mugman we're opening the doors the ghost were pulling up was a reference to The Beatles Yellow Submarine. Because the first one they opened showed a train coming at them before Cuphead slammed the door, and there was a part just like that in Yellow Submarine.
Idk that was just what I immediately thought of when I saw it lol, and yellow submarine is one of my favorite movies
honestly the ammount of references in the grave hard episode just makes me love it so much
Damn! I was right about that Ichabod Crane reference :O
I also want to add another one, during the Devil song in the first episode, there's a How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Chuck Jones) reference when the Devil slithers in pretty much the exact same way the Grinch did during his song.
Cuphead the game itself reminds me of the betty cartoon and other good old black and white movies and stuff.
And now it's animated im glad it still has the vibe to it
when I saw the ghost episode I said to myself "Hey, this song has the same energy as-" Suddenly, the actual reference to the pink elephant parade blew my mind, and I loved the reference to my favorite movie
SO glad I’m not the only one who saw some of these! Love this show.
I loved the Snow White reference! There's also a reference to the Grinch during the Devil's song, he slithers across the floor like the Grinch in the original Christmas special!
Where's The Tex Avery Wild Takes and Looney Tunes Gags ?!
The best thing about Cuphead is that they clearly want to pay homage to the classics and beginnings of animation while still making their own thing. Absolutely wonderful.
Lots of Betty Boop and disney references. Thats pretty awesome
I like how the show still kinda pays homage to these earlier cartoons from the 30s - 50s. And I love how King Dice is literally just the late and great Cab Calloway
0:40 "That's all folks!"
*dies*
That Minnie the moocher clip gives me the heebie-jeebies. Who ever thought of rotoscoping a walrus onto that dance deserved a raise.
1:19 When the Ayuwoki appears to you
I love how much references from cartoons and Disney movies there is in this show !
Now just a reminder I really need to watch this show
Dude as a snow White fan, I INSTANTLY recognized the style of the trees and their eyes, as well as his expression. Expertly animated.
Me too, that's my favorite Disney movie, but how the heck that reference made it into another series, I'm so surprised that the reference was there
The show and game are love letters to old time animation, and as someone overly excited about this kind of stuff, they both make me very happy. Feels like something straight from Fleischer's studios and 30's Disney. And the grainy effect that's always on the screen is just- chefs kiss 👌👌
There's Also References To Tex Avery's MGM Cartoons !
1:12. I do wish you could've included the ' Floating Log Croc' as seen in Snow White near the river when Mug Man Stared at that Tree Root that looked remarkably similar.
Mr. King Dice is literally a charterer of the late great Cab Calloway! It's only fitting they reference one of his scenes! :D
i haven't even seen the cuphead show yet, and i knew _instantly_ that the King Dice clip had to be a Cab Calloway reference. what an icon, i definitely recommend checking out his other performances.
Love these references to the old cartoons! Especially because I love this era of animation and period of American history
Elder Kettle also uses a manure labelled “Acme Grow”
Cuphead really IS bringing a new era of 1920 and 30s cartoons to the new age
Let's just hope that's the ONLY part of the 1920's and 30's it brings back. From 1920 until 1933 alcohol was prohibited in the USA, so having an alcoholic drink was impossible without getting arrested or dying because of bad homemade brew. Crime was able to organize itself in a way that will probably never get untangled again. Many people got murdered in gangster violence. Jazz music was initially seen as "barbaric" just because it was made by blacks, and it had to be adapted to symphonic music to make it well-known. Hollywood in its early years was subject to more scandals than ever since, leading to a industry-wide censorship that lasted until the 1960s. The Great Depression between 1929 and 1940 caused major unemployment and poverty in many civilized countries, also forcing quite some people to start a life in crime. The "Dust Bowl" generated a desertification of the Midwest. Germany was particularly struck hard, because the country was still paying huge war debts to other countries, causing mass poverty and the ideal atmosphere for Nazism to gain voters. Many countries during this time period suffered under either Nazism, Fascism or Communism. From 1933 on Jewish, homosexual, Romani and left wing people were already persecuted in Nazi Germany, at the same time disagreeing in anything with Stalin meant a one-way ticket to Siberia. War was already brewing in Europe and the Far East, when Japan invaded China and South East Asia. Many countries were still colonies, which wasn't a great deal for the natives there. Afro-Americans were still second class citizens and the Ku Klux Klan was still quite powerful in many political circles.
2:10
i knew it
I GODDANG KNEW IT
Gosh damn this show is amazing it feels like animation at its roots I love the new stuff too. It’s just great to have variety in your life. And it just proves your show doesn’t have to be linear or whatever you call it for it to be good. That’s part of what made the 2000’s cartoons so fricken good. I love a linear structured show too, heck Gravity Falls is my favorite show of all time. But I love animation in general. And Brad Bird once said that Animation isn’t a genre. It’s an art form, to perform genres in.(Something like that on the Incredibles commentary)
I remember when they referenced the pink elephants scene, that was a reference right there.
1:36 DED
Ouhwoouuhwoo~!
anything with goofy skeletons immediately earns my approval
0:01 is a more obvious reference to a Disney short
The dance/walk Dice makes as he first walks onto the stage is actually a reference to Koko! a VERY OLD animated clown!!! I love Koko so much and seeing the clip of Dice made me so happy. Seeing all these old references is so cool.
4:13 the end
theirs a scene in the ghost episode where cuphead and mugman run up the stairs and the steps get lifted up to reveal skeletons 8:50 - 8:52 which is a clear refrence to a similar thing in mickey mouse - the mad doctor short(1933) 2:30-2:37
Great Observations Raylee
Even the first clip has another reference. The Saxaphones and the Cellos are probably referencing the Silly Symphonies Music Land short.
I’m not sure the Snow White one was intended, but it gave me a giggle.
The way Mugman moved and the expression as well definitely looked similar to Snow white’s expression as well as twirled away movement… and also the trees with the green angry glowing eyes and such definitely also is a nod if you don’t wanna count Mugman’s reaction.
Painting scene with Mickey Broom holding a bucket like that better. 🪣
2:52
Grim: "Amateurs."
Man I’m young, only ones I recognized was the Snow White one, the first marching ghosts clip and the skeleton dance.
Speaking of Bimbo from Betty Boop, he's a background character in the first episode. I'm surprised that you didn't list it here.
I'm sure everybody realised which was the spooky scary skeleton reference seeing how iconic the song is
3:00 my singing 99% of the time
HEEDLE heedle heedle HEEdle~

Uwooah uwooah!
UWOOOAH!!
3:34 I love that fact that this comes after the dancing walrus thing from Minnie the moocher.
1:13 I think than this scene is from Gravity Falls E2 S1
Mugman's trombone bit reminds me more of the Muppet Show's running gag where at the end of the intro Gonzo plays something on his trumpet and something different happens every time
With King Dice, he's specifically Cab Calloway, who would scat like that and had that mustache and suit. The Betty Boop character you showed was Cab rotoscoped and him singing.
The whole graveyard episode sent me to to horror nostalgia and now I am scared of ghosts again
ok I immediately got Ichabod, Pink Elaphants, and the Skeleton Dance!! I loved this this was so cool! *aaaand now I am gonna go look the main theme for the Sorcerer's Apprentice.*
Glad I'm not the only one who spotted the Sleepy Hollow bit.
I got a reference right, I GOT A REFERENCE RIGHT!!
The amount of references that they put in the spoopy episode is crazyy
Immediately recognized the skeleton dance one… a classic
I KNEW the Pink Elephants thing was a reference, I loved that scene.
I never really noticed these details! Thank you for pointing these out!
It's been ages since I last brushed up on my classic cartoon research!
Glad I wasn't the only one noticing the Pink Elephants, Ichabod, and Sorcerer's apprenctice ^^
Dude, the amount of old classic cartoons references being here are amazing-
I also wanna point out that the title cards feel a lot like the disney title cards they used for their shorts-
*as someone who grew up watching some of those old cartoons that made me really happy*
2:31 I don't know if it counts but the shadow movment here reminded me of scar from the lion king
For me, one of the most obvious reference in the very first episode is the Grinch when the Devil slyther on the floor just like him at the begining of his song.
I'm pretty sure two scenes were inspired by the hotdiggedydemon cuphead cartoon
1. When Mugman got his head covered in duct tape it reminded me of his head being glued back together .
2. When Mugman also said to be a "big strong boy", it was similar to "big beautiful boy".
Man the skeleton reference of the spooky scary skeletons is my favourite. I can't wait to see the second season what will show to us
