Thank you! You brought back memories of my dad and I fishing when I was young! I was eight when he first introduced me to brook fishing! We lost him shortly after that. I developed such a love for fishing from him. For me it is comforting and almost euphoric when I go fishing. I'm a disabled Navy veteran and federal law enforcement officer. I was disabled retired from both due to injuries. My fishing and the love and understanding of my beautiful wife got me through a lot. So, I totally understand how it can bring a tear to your eye. Love your videos and keep up the great work! THANK YOU!

"My "young" legs will grow old and one day my body will no longer be able to carry the weight. NOW is the time to do things like this, strike while the iron is hot."
Keep after it my young friend and you have a decent chance of keeping after it for another 40+ years. I am out that way shortly, for 1000 ft rock wall climbs, 14,000 ft mountain hikes, back country backpacking & fly fishing. Mid-60s. Was hiking slot canyons and camping with my dad well into his 70s.
But that takes some health luck too so no matter the age NOW is the time; don't put things off because it can suddenly become too late.
Beautiful video, looks like you are having a great time! Here is to many more!

Great video Mike. You are making the transition look easy from driftless to mountains. Really thought the flora and fauna pics were interesting. Brook trout are great anywhere. Aggressive fish. Dry fly blasters. Which makes fly selection easy. 😂. Great to see your life is continuing to move forward and find great fishing opportunities. I’ll be watching for next video.

Proud mission and many more to come. I love to see your commitment, success and perspective on these adventures. I'm a newbie fly fisherman but a sage backcountry traveler and I could offer advice to you regarding your gear that may add many, many more years to your adventures. You may be dialed on this already but, check out ultralight hiking videos. It's not necessarily cheap but once you have the equipment it lasts for years. For a 3 day trip in the CO mountains your pack could weigh less than 20 lbs with food and 1.5 liters of walking water without a huge sacrifice to the comfort I see you're experiencing here. Then add your preferred fly kit on that. Game changer. Cheers

Outside of a valid fishing license you should be set! Places like National Forests and BLM are fairly easy to access. National Parks require a lot more permitting. If you are unsure of anything, I always give the local ranger district a call to confirm with them.

Very nice video and a great adventure..but hardly the last wilderness in the State of Colorado...I guess if meant the ENTIRE San Juan range, you might have a point....but having the highest and most 14ners in the lower 48..Co has many such remote wilderness areas....Bears are usually not a big worry in Co...has it gas no known established Grizzly population..although rumors persist...the last known griz , a boar were kilt in 78 I believe in the san Juans but further south of this area...
Sad reality to think the a state with so much wilderness has no griz and no wolves.. although I hear tell wolves ate going to be re introduced....a lot of controversy with both.. but it shouldn't be...imo...
Good luck on yourn future adventures 😉

I practice c&r myself and strongly believe in it but not strictly.Where legal, I would keep a limit of fair sized brookies or any other non native trout for the frying pan. Nothing like eating some fresh caught trout at camp with some potatoes or rice. Browns are really good eating too at times though I've had mixed results, some had bright orange meat and was really good like a mild salmon others had kinda white somewhat mushy meat.

I find that the wilder the fish the better it tastes! I do that too as often as I can, but in situations like this I had no idea if there were fish there to eat

The white meat fish are farm raised stockers. They will turn pink after they eat wild food in a few seasons

Great video, but I don't want to hear about altitude issues; you're a young man - try being OLD, and living in Louisiana, then going out west..where I'm typing this, I'm a massive 15ft above sea level....there's no way to prepare. I just got back from Colorado, and I caught several nice Rio Grande cutts. I've also fished Ute Creek where you were, several years ago - I caught the largest brook trout I've ever caught there - pushing 15 inches. I usually fly fish the Smokies for Southern Appalachian Brook Trout, and an 8 inch fish there is a trophy. I know what you mean about expecting cutts though. Sadly, there aren't any Rio Grande cutts in that drainage, or any others in that area - their range has been reduced to small headwater streams with barrier waterfalls or a manmade barrier to prevent other species from crowding them out - the brookies out-compete them. I've had to root around the 'net for scientific papers describing where they are, etc.....the stream I caught them on this last time was fairly easy to reach, but it was miles from anything, and I never saw another fisherman. I went to another stream to target Colorado River cutts, but all I got were brookies - it turns out I needed to go about another mile upstream, where the barrier was. I love brookies, but in their native habitat, in the East; I didn't drive all those miles out West to get them.

Ian!! I am floored hahaha you are so right me and these young legs are gonna shut up from here on out!!
The beauty and bane of the brook trout! Bucket biology sure has made things wonky in the present day.. But I do have to say that I appreciate every on of those wild trout! They sure do speckle the mountain valley with a beautiful hue.

@@FLYALLSZN I'm already planning a trip for next summer - I'm going to try to bag as many of the following species as I can: 1. Gila 2. Apache 3. Bonneville Cutt 4. Lahontan Cutt 5. Redband.....I saw your Gila video - great resource...I've been researching where to go for them . I need to get in better shape - I used to run, but my knees can't take the pounding any more. You might ask why I drive for thousands of miles for these small fish, when Louisiana offers some of the greatest fishing in the world. Well, the fishing is great here, particularly the inshore saltwater action, and I've done my share of that, but I think I just love fishing small isolated streams, where no one is around. I fish the upper reaches of the streams that drain into Lake Ponchartrain - no trout of course, but a ton of fiesty spotted bass and longear bream (sunfish). And, it isn't too bad of a drive up to the Smokies - I love it so much there, I bought some land just outside the boundary of GSMNP - one day, I might retire there. In the meantime, I love chasing the natives, wherever they are.

at 26:00 minutes you talk about that trip taking you back to fishing with your father. Your whole video took me back to the feelings of a week on the Colorado trail with my wife. Today I was bumming around youtube, looking at some colorado fishing stuff, some places I might want to explore as I get my now older body back in shape and hopefully get out there again. I'm from there, and while the front range is now too crowded, a fit human being, with a little research, can find beautiful (almost) solitude and get their spiritual jones filled. BTW, that Driftless Hat, is that some form of fishing thing or is that the area up in Wisconsin, etc? I've got an uncle on a small farm outside Lacrosse Wisconsin, and I cannot imagine a more beautiful place to be than that area in September. Sharing just in case, but you don't sound "Wisconsin!"
    Peace!
    Thank you!
