  • Surfing’s history - from Africa to Polynesia to the Americas - is one that’s rich, diverse, and incredibly nuanced. So much so, that we are only beginning to scratch the surface and understand it.
In the first episode of “In Plain Sight”, a five-part series that creatively unveils subjects and personalities shaped by surfing, Selema Masekela explores the varied roots of surfing’s origin and its cultural evolution into what we recognize today.
To accompany this episode, read more about how surfing’s global history is inspiring the next generation of surfers in an article by Siraad Dirshe on RedBull.com 👉🏼 win.gs/InPlainSightEp1Story

Selema I see your commitment since the events a couple of years ago. Hopefully humans will be knowing that skin color, gender, etc. do not matter. Education is a great start to become conscious and aware. Actions take over and then it forms part of history because the problem is overcome. Hope for the future. One ocean. Thank you for the upload.

Love the Animation on this! I should preface this by saying I have a great love for surfers and surf culture always have always will its a very inspirational sport but the fact that years of racism affected surf culture is not very surprising at all and now that racism is being shunned and obliterated what I believe really affects surfing the most is income inequality which affects all races but still disproportionately affects black people. Biggest reason out of all the reasons: Because of all those years of racism most black people never got to build generational wealth like white people did in America. Its not fair, its wrong, its sad but its the truth. The truth is surfings barrier to entry is more expensive than ever and generational. 9 times out of 10, if someone grew up surfing its because their dad or sibling or friends surfed and taught them. That cuts out most black people who’s dads didnt care about surfing or didnt have a chance cause they couldnt go to the beach or they had more trouble finding quality jobs. So if you want to learn later in life as an adult youre gonna need to cough up some “Extra Money” lol. For example a high performance surfboard is gonna cost you $700-$2000, plus youll need the other accoutrements(wetsuit, leash, wax, towels etc.) Multiples of these items will be needed of course, a quality Oneil or Vissla wetsuit will cost more than $500 we’re already at $1500 minimum just to have a chance at getting on the same playing field of a high performance surfer. Then if you dont have any surfer friends yet nice enough to teach for free, you’ll need a coach which im sure can start to get expensive. Now the biggest one of all you’ll need to live in or near a beach town that has a surfbreak with decent waves that cuts out 90% of America and then if you want to take trips to real quality waves like the Mentawis or cloudbreak or even Hawaii were talking thousands of dollars, this is why pros need sponsors but you cant get a sponsor unless you first have the surfboard and the wetsuit and the coach and a house in a beach town or close by. These are some of the reasons why surfing is still very much a subculture. Its very aspirational and exclusive, and it will continue to exclude black people, many of whom cannot swim and dont care about swimming or spending thousands of dollars to be a surfer because theyre struggling to keep a roof over their head and put food on the table for their children as opposed to a sport like skateboarding which has a lower barrier to entry, one of the reasons its 1000% more profitable and popular than surfing. You can get started for less than $300 and you can do it anywhere in the world. If redbull really wants to help racism and surfing they’d give free surf classes and promote them at underprivelged majority black schools, Make some way for kids to apply for donated boards online. Im not saying all surfers are rich but in many households in America “Extra Money” is not a thing. This video is a really great for getting the conversation started.
