  • Follow Father and Son as they cycle the Munda Biddi Trail. The Munda Biddi Trail (which means path through the forest in the Noongar Aboriginal language) is a world-class nature based off-road cycling experience. You would be hard pressed to find a better off road cycling trail anywhere in the world. It proved to be a tough challenge but a rewarding experience at the same time.

    Thank you. Loved it. I'm having another go at the Bibb very soon and pondering a return during spring.
    I've not yet camp toured with my mountain bike but if I work out a sane transport option to get it and I to WA this trail might be another great way to experience that area.So far Qld's BVRT is my longest multi day ride.

      Hi TSC, yeah, i struggled in some parts. The Trailer has its advantages (and its disadvantages). I prefer the trailer and not because of its carrying capacity. It offer low centre of gravity, the bike is more balanced, the trailer tracks well and you dont have to remember which bag your dry socks are in. That trailer has covered about 24,000km, mostly in SEAsia. A great investment. Thanks for watching.

    Gidday! Love the video and have already recommended it to a couple of friends. Quick question: I'm coming down that way to ride the trail later this year, also with a BOB trailer (thanks for the inspiration). I'm using the standard quick-release axle at the moment, but do you think I'd be better off with one of the heavier-duty thru axles (like the ones made by The Robert Axle Project)? I'm concerned the quick-release version might not be strong enough. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  Год назад +1

      Hi Ed, my trailer has covered in excess of 20,000 km over the course of 20 years, all with the standard QR axle. I have replaced it once due to expected wear and tear but I have all the confidence in the design and quality of the product. I thought the RAP axles were only designed for thru axles but if you think you need the extra protection of going heavy duty then do that to provide you peace of mind. Enjoy the journey…it can be very difficult in places but very rewarding none the less.
      Good luck.

    • @edmiles5822
      @edmiles5822 Год назад

      @@mongreldogproductions, thanks for getting back to me! Then I reckon I'll stick with the QR myself. I've got a spare, just in case. I bought the trailer second hand (here in Germany) and it's in good nick, and the guy threw in a couple of RAP axles. Using them would mean changing the back wheel though, and I don't really want that headache right now. Appreciate your advice very much, and good luck on your future expeditions.

    Sweet ride. No crocs in them rivers, eh? ... And near the end there, good enough to drink straight out of, even?
    Say, "squeal like a pig" was filmed at the Chattooga River, right where North Carolina, South Carolina, and "Joe-jah" meet. Good water rafting these days, I hear.
    I worked a project right there in the foothills of the Blue Ridge for about a year just 35 miles from there. I got out in the bush a bit for some decent day hikes only, but never came across any inbred Scots-Irish in my travels.
    The Appalachian Trail traverses right through there.
    For sure a bit of a time warp in some of the more rural parts, but unfortunately that area won't be very rural for much longer: it's just south of the Smoky Mountains, and somewhat sandwiched between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Knoxville, Tennessee, and Atlanta, which are growing in population massively.
    The artsy-fartsies have for some time appropriated Highlands, NC, right in the heart of it. Asheville, NC -- just a hop & a skip away -- is the home of the Biltmore and the original & resurging artsy-fartsy central of the region. There are "artist" retreats pocked all through that region, and one would do well to be careful of those, especially Australians, real possibility of getting lost in translation -- "he got a real pert[h]y mouth".
    But seriously, that whole area in & around the Chattooga is the waterfall center of the US and arguably one of the most beautiful areas in the world to live in if you like the outdoors ... granted, I haven't lived in Australia.
    The regular roads through the hills all the way up through Canada to the St. Lawrence make some fine motorcycle touring -- many Tails of the Dragon throughout -- but are generally too narrow for safe bicycling, except the Blue Ridge Highway and no doubt other routes ... but of course it's more fun on the back roads.
    _

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  5 лет назад

      We do have crocs...real maneaters. But they are further North in the tropical areas of Australia and locals know well enough to stay out of the creeks and billabongs. Occasionally, a tourist will get taken but if you stay away from the riverbanks you'll be ok. Unfortunately, like some of the places you mention, they can become over populated and ruined by well meaning tourists. The Australian Outback is vast and has its own particular attraction to Adventure Riders (motorcycling) but exploring it does come with some risk...just gotta take some commonsense precautions and pack accordingly. Thanks for watching.

      Interesting question. I do know of Riders who have done it on Ebikes but it would take a little more planning to pull it off. Some of the terrain is quite tough and battery life would be drained quickly. A spare battery might provide some relief for those tough bits and it would mean ensuring you stay in local towns instead of staying in the huts. There is a Munda Biddi FB Page which you can join…it is a great source of intel. There are some other vids ((of mine) where I have done sections of the track with my son, Trevor, who was on his Ebike. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Every Which Way But Lost, the orange thingy is a SPOT Messenger...a satellite Tracker and EPIRB (just in case lol). Do your research...there are many parts of the Munda Biddi that are single track and perhaps not suitable for a trike. There may be alternative routes (roads and tracks) but that may involve backtracking and may not be ideal. There is a Face Book page for the Munda Biddi and that could be a good source of intel. Good luck...it’s a tough journey (well it was for me hahaha). Glad you like the Vid. Thanks for watching.

    Well done completing the ride with a trailer. Ive seen another guy quit and say it was impossible with a trailer. How do you find riding trails like that clipped in? Ever considered breathable water proof shoes? The Keen sandals are popular or even Crocks have many different styles now

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Emily Martin, being clipped in is fine as long as you don't have to place a foot down in a hurry which can result in falling off while still attached. It happened to me once at a set of traffic lights on a busy intersection much to the amusement of all the onlookers. It hasn't happened since. I haven't considered any other type of footwear but maybe i should look at the options. I have spent some time touring south east Asia and breathable shoes or sandals would be more practical. Thanks for watching.

      Hi P.Mc, the best parts would have to be the tall timber country around Manjimup, Pemberton, Shannon and Northcliffe although there are some steep valleys which you have to negotiate with switchbacks and steep accents and descents. Hi John, Glad you like the Vid. Water was not in short supply although we did carry hydration packs (2 litre) and had water bottles on the bikes. We rode the Trail in Spring after heavy winter rains. All the water tanks at the Huts were full and the water quality was good although they recommend boiling (we didnt bother). I drank water from the Shannon River with no ill effects. You travel thru many small towns and communities. The most food we carried was about 6 meals, ie, lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch dinner, breakfast before being able to resupply. If you have/had special dietary requirements you could mail food parcels forward and collect from POffices's along the way if needed. Thanks for watching.

Link for bike is here; www.giant-bicycles.com/au/bikes-talon

      @@mongreldogproductions give Stans no tubes a look. Its a lot easier than the internet makes out. Remove all rim tapes, clean spotless, tape up with Gorilla tape from Bunnings, don't get tape on the bead of the rim. Poke small hole into tape and push in new tubeless valve stem. Fit tubeless ready tyre, pump up hard until the bead sets, deflate, remove valve core, get a syringe from vet or similar, and pump into tyre 150ml of Stans no tube sealant, fit core, pump up hard, spin wheel/tyre or 5 mins, deflate down to desired pressure, enjoy.
      Any little thorn or similar will only leak for about 2-3 revolutions and will seal up on its own. You won't even know. Best mod.

    Hello Intrepid Sir
    I have followed your adventures sporadically, and am now planning my own;
    I want to take my new GS from Newman (WA)to Warwick in Queensland, and i want to take the road less travelled, but being solo (and hopefully well equipped but lightweight) i do not want to take undue risks. So, would you be so kind as to point me towards your source/s of information for when you have planned your many cross-country rides? I would like to follow the Indian/Pacific Eastwards from Kal for a while, or even as far as SA before picking up one of the main roads towards Alice or Birdsville, depending on how much time i have. I will be travelling in April so hopefully neither rain nor heat will be excessive, and already have capacity for 55liters of fuel.
    Any advice, or perhaps even a chat would be gratefully received.

      Hi Chris, glad you like the vids. I usually just Google the roads or tracks i plan on taking and see what comes up. Additionally, RUclips can be a good source of Intel. OzeExplorer Website is another option. I also lurk on AdvRider Forum to see what other roads and tracks Riders are travelling on. AdvRider has a 'Trip Report' section which can be a good source of information. If you dont find what you need on AdvRider then just start your own thread in the Forum and ask other Riders for input. If there is a road or track here in Oz, somebody would have ridden or driven it before you. AdvRider Link is here (if you dont know of it).

      Plenty Highway, Donahue highway, Gary Junction Road, Old Eyre Highway, Trans Cont Railway from Kal to Haig, Great Central Road and Hyden to Norseman Road are all doable even on a big Adventure bike (depending on the Riders level of experience). Take some reasonable safety precautions (ie, Sat Phone, EPIRB or SPOT Tracker) and let somebody know your intentions.
      Good luck.

      @@mongreldogproductions Cheers mate, great advice.
      I ended up scrolling through Google Maps on the work computer and made a pretty good go of planning a route, and spotting lots of communities and road houses that I plan on contacting for local input.
      Not sure about the GS as a long term prospect, just way too heavy, meaning more fuel and water to carry, might go the opposite and get something under 140kg.
      Thanks again mate. Happy travels.

      Hi Michael Clarke, it would’ve been September...my son is an Art teacher and we would’ve done it during the school holidays. I don’t recall being swooped by Maggie’s. I know some riders attach cable ties on their helmets at odd angles as a Maggie deterrent but we took no precautions. Snakes start to become active during spring and will lie on the track to get warm but they are spooked easy and move off the track once they sense vibration. I don’t remember any close calls. Good luck on your journey. Glad you like the vid.

      Hi sctpc, I had to do a google search on the bicentennial Trail...never heard of it before. 5,300km is out of my league although I notice there are 12 sections. So much to do; so little time. Thanks for watching.
