that's what I thought as well. I would have found it really interesting to get a real plan to avoid something like that or so. I mean, if they already have modules, what if the US military develops a gun module on their own, etc., etc,. Something like that could potentially lead up to the Black mirror scenario
@@Korne127 One of the terms of service is that it can't be used to harm people and if they find out you have they will deactivate your spot, but that might not apply to the US military.

@@jamesminett9717 Even if it did apply, what's preventing the military from building a similar one and doing whatever they want with it? or even some skilled individual from hacking the software and adding dangerous modules? I still love spot, but someone is going find a way to use one to cause harm. Can a car maker disable your car if you soot out of the window? Maybe, but can they prevent any form of hacking? Impossible
They should also add wheels to Spot anyway, it would make moving fast in a straight direction super easy, and if it finds and obstacle, it would just have to lower the legs and pull the wheels up.
But you would trade stability. But yes, I see your point. Wheels would save on battery, the question is by how much. 90mins is pretty good already. With a self replacing battery, spot can run 24 hrs in a loop non stop.
Now it's only 3 miles per hour, you can definitely out run it...until Boston Dynamics changes a chip that controls it's speed. And then we get "I, MKBHD Robot Part 2"
It´s not even a chip. I work as a engineer with servo drives and robotics. I´m pretty sure it´s just a software limitation they put in. The joints can definitely move faster.
@@k.t.4062 They probably could work on it for a bit and roll out a software update that increases the top speed (maybe switching to a front 2 + back 2 movement at a certain speed like when a typical quadruped breaks into a run) The only thing stopping them from doing it is if the motors really just aren't reliable enough after a certain speed
Boston Dynamics is the only company i know, that would not make robots to complicated but with realy realistic movement, balancing etc. - i love to see it
I doubt it can swap the battery but I know it can definitely tell when it's battery's running low, and autonomously return to its charging station from wherever its current location is. And once it's recharged will automatically get up and return to whatever it was doing before.
Robots are gonna have charging stations or solar panels (like Tesla vehicles) in future .....and as soon as they pair them with artificial intelligence thats it...they'll take over.
By the time we get to that point, Battery technology will probably be also far advanced.. Like something on a uranium level with years worth of non-stop energy.
@@andyhaber89 I'd assume it's battery life would drastically improve if they change the metal frame to carbon fiber or something along those lines. 60lbs is a lot of weight, they could probably downgrade the motors as well and drastically bring down the cost.
Or just let people with sight issues help them with day to day life like, lights, doors even something as simple as it walking next to you while you cross the road. Just an idea though but it's cool to think about these sorts of things.
@@karthikrox6310 we are not there yet though and they don't need to really. Right now it's comparable to a red camera maybe. 12:47 is so cute, Spot's a little genius robot dog decked out to save the world. It looks like it has a little headlamp and backpack.
“And they have no intention of creating or allowing a future where robots just takeover the world”
They never do Marques. They never do.
that's what I thought as well.
@@Korne127 lmao ppl always making movies real possibilities.. Same stuff with covid-19, stop being such a scaredy cat/expert just because you've seen some movies.
Lol - indeed...
@@jamesminett9717 Even if it did apply, what's preventing the military from building a similar one and doing whatever they want with it? or even some skilled individual from hacking the software and adding dangerous modules? They should also add wheels to Spot anyway, it would make moving fast in a straight direction super easy, and if it finds and obstacle, it would just have to lower the legs and pull the wheels up.
But you would trade stability. But yes, I see your point. Wheels would save on battery, the question is by how much. 90mins is pretty good already. With a self replacing battery, spot can run 24 hrs in a loop non stop.
@11:14 “It does a pretty good job avoiding failure”
Me: *walking towards the robot*
Robot: *slowly walks away then hails a taxi*
Now it's only 3 miles per hour, you can definitely out run it...until Boston Dynamics changes a chip that controls it's speed. And then we get "I, MKBHD Robot Part 2"
Boston Dynamics "accidentally" presses the "enable Spotnet" button
It´s not even a chip. I work as a engineer with servo drives and robotics. I´m pretty sure it´s just a software limitation they put in. The joints can definitely move faster.
@@k.t.4062 They probably could work on it for a bit and roll out a software update that increases the top speed (maybe switching to a front 2 + back 2 movement at a certain speed like when a typical quadruped breaks into a run)
The only thing stopping them from doing it is if the motors really just aren't reliable enough after a certain speed

Spot 2030: So I been MKBHD for past 10 years and here are my thoughts.
Excellent episode, well filmed
The day they learn to swap batteries on their own is the day *they dominate the world.*
Uh, dude my Roomba can do that.
I just realized how true that is.

100 years later : I need your clothes , your boots and your motorcycle.
If these become inexpensive, we’d be using them to carry groceries.
that and if the battery life gets better, maybe with graphene batteries in a future version
@@andyhaber89 I'd assume it's battery life would drastically improve if they change the metal frame to carbon fiber or something along those lines. 60lbs is a lot of weight, they could probably downgrade the motors as well and drastically bring down the cost.
@@karthikrox6310 but surely the price has doubled already due to the carbon fibre?
Or just let people with sight issues help them with day to day life like, lights, doors even something as simple as it walking next to you while you cross the road. Just an idea though but it's cool to think about these sorts of things.
@@karthikrox6310 we are not there yet though and they don't need to really. Right now it's comparable to a red camera maybe. Probably still more expensive though (the chosen companies probably don't pay anything yet since the product isn't finished yet). It's still quite novel and refined and I don't think that there is an interest in selling it for 500 to 2000$ . They'll probably work it for another 5 years and might release the first product by then with lots of modules etc.
