    Video about Reflections, and he has his lamp and plant reflecting on his desk. Along with the reflection of the RUclips Play button at the beginning of the video. Pure genius! ;)

    One note I'd like to make is that when you place reflection shots right in the middle, "ignoring" the rule of thirds, I think you actually can still use the rule of thirds. IMO, the center point of the reflection is not a focal point usually, but rather the objects being reflected are. When you see a mountain reflection shot, how much time do you spend looking at the point where the water meets land? probably almost never. Therefore, you can still follow the rule of thirds because you can place, say, the mountains in a way where their sunny peaks appear on the top and lower third of the frame simultaneously due to the reflection. You aren't breaking any rules because the central point of reflection is not being used as your subject.

    Thank you for posting. Lots of very valuable tips. The only point I would quibble with is no. 5. Where I live it seams that the sky's are clear or overcast. Under these situations cutting out the sky is the way to go (sometimes using negative space works well) and I often go for the 16 by 9 or 10. However if there is a good foreground you can tilt your camera down so that the reflection and foreground takes up the majority of the picture.

    Great tips Mark, especially liked the filter advice. I try and offer similar advice about polarisers on my workshops and camera club lectures. Polarisers aren’t there to kill the reflection it’s about controlling the reflections and highlights to get that natural look. Something I like in the example images you showed us.

    Thank you for the great channel, Mark! The timing of this vid couldn't have been more perfect for me. It was fresh in my mind when I got out at blue hour on a local lake the next morning and captured what I think is my strongest image year to date (helped some by the fact I've already sold a print for sure :) ) The version I ended up going with had my focus set on the reflection of the moon in the water (with my glass at its f11 sweet spot of course).

    I think people take the rule of thirds too serious -- to the point it becomes dogma. I stressed out so much about it starting out. Yes, it's a good rule of thumb and guideline to loosely follow, but it's not a law of physics that can't be broken, and there are times where it may be better to use your intuition as a photographer and let the cards fall where they may. Shooting reflections is a good example of this.

  • @glennhunt3725
    @glennhunt3725 4 года назад

    When I see a landscape reflection, I just can't pass it up. I will use the polariser tip in my next image to titrate the water image depth, it's a good one. Silver is good, Gold is better. I hope you have great success in the coming years.
