  • High in the slopes of Monte Scorluzzo in the Stelvio National Park a first world war bunker which was once entombed and preserved by ice is melting, revealing a scene from history which had been literally frozen in time.
    The timber bunker was once the home to a platoon of Austro-Hungarian soldiers who repulsed suicidal assaults from Italian forces during world war one. It is still scattered with their possessions, tins of food, cooking utensils, shreds of clothing.
    A century on, this frozen depository of the past carries a stark warning for the future as world leaders gathering at COP 26 in Glasgow deliberate how to try to put a brake on climate change.
