- Alta Ski Area and Sweetgrass Productions bring you a short film that explores the intersection of people and powder skiing throughout Alta’s 86-year history.
The Soul of Alta is a film that sets out to answer the question "What is Alta?"
The beauty of that question is that there is no singular answer-Alta is a place that represents something unique to each of us. The snow, the Alta community and the spirit of the mountain hold onto each of us in different ways.
Alta Ski Area and Sweetgrass Productions bring you a short film that explores the intersection of people and powder skiing throughout Alta’s 86-year history. This film serves as a refresh from the short-form attention-seeking reels that are commonplace in our media landscape. The Soul of Alta is meant to be a coffee table piece-an ode to Alta-revisiting the past 86 years of skiing. Cozy up by the fireplace, warm up your favorite mug and immerse yourself in the history of Alta, deep powder skiing sequences from last winter's record-setting 903-inch winter, connect with Alta's natural mountain environment and reconnect with the mountain and the sport that we all love.

51 consecutive seasons and as always, guaranteed to satisfy! Just got back from a 22" weekend! Thanks for all you do Alta!
This captures what makes Alta truly different - a mountain for skiers based on fabulous snow. I skied there more than 100 days in the 1980's and I can attest that the footage of waist deep powder isn't staged. I knew I'd found something unusual when I saw local high school hot shots showing up with snorkels on the big powder days. No one goes there for the scene, just for the skiing and yes, the place does have a unique soul. I've skied all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Alta is the best.
Best short ski movie I’ve ever seen. My soul’s never been screaming louder for day 1 of the season❄️
People come from all over the world to SKI Alta. Not a snowboarder in sight. That's just fine with me. Skied a waist deep day there. The comment about not being connected to the earth is spot on. Closest thing to flying like a bird. A truly spiritual experience.
Alta snowboard team FTW!!!
Alta is like heaven. You’ll know when you get there.
Love it!
One of the best ski movies I have ever seen. Spoke to my heart. GREAT JOB
Last time I skied at Alta, I was in powder chest high...very memorable. Alta, Taos, Telluride, Jackson Hole, Snowbird...5 best ski areas.
Started skiing there in the 60's. My father was ski patrol there for ten years. Got to go skiing with Stein, Alf, Dick Bass, Mel Dalebot, Warren Miller, and Suzy Chaffic, to name some of the legendary skiers of the day.
My dad's ashes are scattered on Sugarloaf.
It's still my favorite resort.
Just had a great powder day at Alta. The place has soul for sure! Does anyone know the Artist/title of the song @2:30? It doesn’t seem to be credited in the info section.
Just found it myself!
“The Tube” by Easy Giant
Learned to ski powder there in 1978. Paul Bergantz. Always remember. Have been back with my family. Unique experience.
My second year skiing, I was 16 and got a seasons pass at Alta. I vividly recall the run that my friend and I figured out how to ski powder. It had been taught to me, but it was on that run, down Greeley Bowl that we both figured it out. That unlocked a whole new world.
Love it!
Long live the Alta Snowboard club!
I bet @AltaSkiArea won’t like this comment.
I ❤ALTA SKI PATROL!! Thanks for all your hard work.
I was lucky enough to ski with Alf back in the 70s. Single weekday ski lift tix $7
For the first 20 years of my life, I had no clue how lucky I was growin up on the bench. Now I’m writing this while sitting in lil Hollywood traffic. I hear Texas has better skiing than Utah. So you should go there
Yes! Go ski Texas! Growing up in Salt Lake I can testify that Texas would be a much better choice.
Careful you just invited the whole state of Texas to skip over Colorado and come up to Utah. We understand that reverse psychology far too well
@@bryanfish3052 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Terrific film about a special place
Please keep making these fantastic short films!
Thanks, Oliver!
Little Cottonwood magic. Beautiful!
Lol. You talk about there being division in the world and Alta offers a place for "connection to the snow" (13:10) but YOU LITERALLY KEEP GROUPS OF PEOPLE DIVIDED and you exclude people from accessing the mountain so they ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY CONNECTION TO THE SNOW.
Don't yell into the void. They don't care. So why should we. Look how many subs they have. Look at inclusive mountains like Jackson even their youtube channel is crushing them. Abasin same thing. If you really want to give the bird just go hike it.
Snowbird is next door.
@@watchalay74 Lol no shit Sherlock. Keep your dim wittted comments to yourself.
@@DanPrescott I don’t disagree with you, and I have hiked Alta many times. I just wanted them to know that their video is dumb and misleading. But they know they suck.
My husband worked snow removal 22/23 season, the power and beauty of the mountain is something you fall in love with immediately
Definitely a special place!! ❤ ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ ⛷️
Amazing. So well done! I would watch an 8 hour documentary-series on Alta.
Haha, considering this one took two years to film-even incorporating a ton of archival footage-I'm not sure we can pull that off.
@@AltaSkiArea Understood, and I totally get it (and love that Alta doesn't market itself the way every other resort now does).
Love the video though, watched 3 times and have nearly cried every watch lol.
This made me so homesick. I moved away a couple of years ago and I miss this place. I loved going to Alta year round. Growing up in Salt Lake I spent lots of time up there. The memories this brought back are wonderful.
Now if the Canyon Inn would do a flashback video I could revisit some of the best times of my life when needed 😊
What i love about alta is that once you become a local (and this is different from any other place i have ever been) you are expected to act like a host for all the visitors. The ethos of politeness and community is what makes Alta extra special. Now about those icon passes?
Love it - I felt a similar thing in Revelstoke, BC.
Good to know. I hear kicking horse and revelstoke are compliments (not competitors) to alta and snowbird. On my list of other ski resorts to visit.@
I'm from Alaska & when I was a kid my Dad took us on a ski trip to Utah, I remember Alta was our favorite. The whole no snowboards thing is weird though.
I'm so fortunate to live in Salt Lake and play here at Alta!
Alta is the best the only issue is getting there I can’t wait for the gondola to be put in so my family and I can enjoy Alta even more
Love this place and the people who work here
Absolutely beautiful and spot on edit....well said at 11:02
Thanks, Brett. That line really tugs at the heart strings.
Love the film it captures the soul and vibe of Alta perfectly, just a bunch of good people having good times.
Don't sell your soul by supporting the Gondola. Let's not forget Alta is a member of Gondola Works.
I watch this video a couple time a month while I wait for next season meanwhile I am still skiing your snow in July just wish I had a lift. I think keep wildcat open so it ain’t as long of a walk to ski main in July.
Brilliantly done! I love it! LET'S GO SKIING!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing this!!
Gpa Bob Pratt is a legend!!!
This was a great video, I particularly enjoyed the avalanche mitigation and history parts.
I see the basic chairlifts with price tag 180$ for a day skipass. oh guys..
You gotta pay to play.
Season pass $1380
Ski 100 days. $13.80 each time.
My last ride of the year 2022 was down main chute Alta, 1st tracks, waist deep in May. I got applause from skiers. Poach it!
Much love can't wait to be back shortly :)
In my soul forever. Thank you for such an amazing video. Alta LOVE!
Nicely done. It's my favorite place for sure. The snow, the terrain, the laid back vibe...
Is it better than Hokkaido? The snow here is pretty damn good - Rusutsu, Furano, etc. Lift tickets for less than $60/day too.
A nice film. A great ski area. As someone who both skis and snowboards your line about setting aside division feels self serving and hypocritical. I love skiing there, it's truly awesome, but the owners of Alta are last in line for taking any moral high ground where "sowing division" is concerned. You could easily left out that cringeworthy line and been fine.
This is awesome!!!!
Don't change, Alta.
I love that it’s ski only! Thanks for preserving the nice pow
Ride bigot.
The pizza skier in front of me today really preserved that powder. Praise be!
ignorant
@@justinkoeckritz8273🤣
I saw some dude doing that. Tried to teach him to carve, he nailed the skid turning though!
Lets make our skis the same size as a snowboards and say snowboards have no place here. What a joke Alta is just more stuck up boomers still gatekeeping good lift access terrain.
Gorgeous film! Alta is magic! Alta is for skiers!
Video's first rhetorical answer: "First of all, it's Alta not Alta". I guess that must mean Alta is pretty sweet.
I love Alta, and skied hundreds of days there. But their soul died a bit when they signed up to be on the IKON pass system.
I havent seen Alta since 1978. I was working at Snowbird. Alta's low key style was wonderful. it was not at that time [yet] ruined by the look of money and wealth and exclusivity, that fancy commercial glam BS that is so common at top operations. I hope Alta has not changed. I prefer X-C because it allows me to take in the most important things while the focus on downhill is to go fast and dominate the mountains. To be close to the incredible beauty of the mountains is why I X-C ski.
Bravo! So beautifully done!!
Really enjoyed the history and footage. Wish there was more reasonable lodging at Alta...
Love this place!!! 😍
Marketing. This place is oversold.
Isn’t “Alta” an old indigenous word that means, “The Long Hike” or “Long Traverse?”
I think Alta comes from Latin meaning "High".
Derives from Latin “high” “tall””elevated “
See above reply. Just jokes man. Good lesson though! If you’re a SLC Local it’s NOT the first time you’ve seen or heard this joke.
Another Long Traverse Ahead
It’s 2024, who the hell does Alta think they are not allowing snowboarding??
It's the same kind of close minded people that honestly we are better off not interacting with. It's like every snob at a country club mentality. There is ZERO reason why they should exclude at this point. It's pure snobbery. I won't liken it to certain political situations but you get it.
@@DanPrescott they would let you in if you skied.
Never seen so much corn in a powder skiing movie. The soul of Alta is the mandatory skis on hikes and the technical traverses with Caligula skiiers passing you as they fiend for mostly skied out runs.
If you snowboard go to snowbird
Alta only has half a soul.
I'm guessing you are saying this because half of Alta would be unavailable to snowboarders due to their inability to effectively make long traverses. Anyhow, if a grandmother can learn to ride a snowboard, you can learn to ski, that is if you are in fact really interested in experiencing Alta.
Alta had a Soul. They sold it to Ikon.
What is Alta? Exclusionary, pretentious, and antiquated. Period.
No Boarders is the best part 😍
You're sad. Stay home.
I will say as a Snowboarder growing up I hated Alta. I skied there for the first time last year, of course the season was epic, I loved it. I'm not sure if not having boarders on the mountain helps preserve the runs any better, but it was worth learning to ski to go up there. It is a great mountain.
Alta has no soul. End the discrimination.
Alta is for snowboarding!
I’m just glad that there’s places where all of the clueless skiers can flock to. lol
Also, the argument that snowboards are more destructive to the terrain/snow surface is just a myth that was created by skiers. Science has proven that both skis and snowboards create the same amount of damage to the terrain. Skiers are weird.
Ski only resorts have no soul by default
Alta allowed snowboards in 1985, but they were discontinued the following winter, per a recent Deseret News article, "the snowboarders were miserable and the skiers were annoyed". The reality is that snowboards are terrible for traversing, it's also hard to snowboard uphill in 8" of new snow along a ridge line with your feet bolted together. Skis were invented at least 2,000 years ago as over snow transportation, and you still have to use them that way at Alta.
The important part is SKI RESORT😂 still no snowboards 👍 excellent.
Boarders just jealous. Alta is for skiers.
1,800 acres of the Alta Ski Area are located on PUBLIC Forest Service land.
Marketers must be getting pressured to boost sales for alta being that its jan already and little if any snow has fallen . Sales must be way down. They figure "lets get back to our roots" marketing might trigger ticket sales. I have suggestion how about reducing ticket prices to pre 2000. Under 40.00. Good ole.days burger wed for 1.00 at half way lodge.🍔🍔
They could offer a few snowboard only days and really boost sales!
Please please allow snowboarding. A lot of us aren’t truck stoppers ruining the slopes. 😢
Grew up skiing here will die skiing here
Alta has no Soul. Only snowboarders have souls.
Best thing about Alta--- No stinking verminous snowboarders 🤣
Let em know, Chad O 🗣️
Im with Chad O ☝️
I like skiing Alta but what a weird, outdated form of discrimination to ban snowboarders. Clearly you are stuck in the 80s in a fight against hotdoggers and hooligans.
I'm primarily an Alpine skier, but I'm guessing I've been snowboarding longer than somewhere around 99% of the snowboarders in Utah, 1986. Snowboards suck on traverses, you would be like a beached whale on the High T. FYI, Alta also does not allow ski bikes.
Cool film, now allow snowboarders in please, it's overdue.
A place that bans snowboarding in 2024, on National Forest Land, has no soul. Don't kid yourself.
It's almost 2025 and alta still doesn't allow snowboarding. Wtf alta. Quit being stupid.
Soul of pretentious
Alta sold its soul when they partnered with IKON and implemented paid/reserved parking. not to mention the fact that they are snowboard racists operating on public US forest service land
Another lame traverse ahead.
Another *Long Traverse Ahead
@@AltaSkiArea I would go with lame.
love the spot but i can't get over the no snowboarders. the true liberals of america: too cool let everybody be apart of something special.
Look at how many old men in Alta lift lines, you will know why
@@YAOZYVIDEO ha, true.
Best thing about Alta is there are no stinking, verminous, snowboarders.
@@andy5478-MTB do you ski as well as you copy and paste?
At Alta, I guarantee you the snowboard hate is Bipartisan lol. Just like our shared dislike of Alta’s vibe can be too. 🎉
