Absolutely this. My current rig is my first build with no HDD and the difference is immense. Now I just need to stash my NAS away somewhere where I can't hear the spinning rust...
And if you do use an HDD for storage and not for programs or OS, you can set the drive to sleep after a few mins of inactivity. Best of both worlds.

Flipping the switch on back of the PSU to "off" makes it even quieter
It does on seasonic psu's... fan off mode :-)
and it also vastly improves your life since you waste less of it in front a monitor.

Undervolting I feel is severely underappreciated. Got my gpu 6 degree cooler (hence quieter ( especially with my morpheus 2 with 2 noctua a12x25 fans)) by undervolting and oc, yes you can do both.

Zero undervolting headroom and no OC headroom at all.
Really wonder if I just got a really really bad card or if it's normal with 2070S's.
My old 1060 had Soooo much headroom.
And my Notebook cant even run Intel XTU so no undervolting either...

This guy needed "hundreds of hours of testing" to come to the conclusion that better cooling equipment (and an undervolt) = quieter pc lmao
Turbulence noise is also a big consideration. I switched my radiator fans from push to pull in my Ghost S1 and it runs so much quieter now since the radiators induce much less turbulence on the fan blades.
Jeffrey Wong something to add: you may also want neutral - negative airpressure, with bottom/side intake and top air outtake
Thats how the apple trashcan kept its temperature reasonable, hot air travels up more easily

Turbulence is better than laminar flow with regards to cooling. Pull setups are very good if you a cramped case, as a pull setup has much better airflow due to the Bernoulli principle, and the low pressure also lowers the ambient temperature of the case.
this is why noctua made fan spacers, optimum made the 3d designs available

For undervolting you don't have to align each dot perfectly, in fact only the first one that is your "target" voltage at given frequency (e.g. 1920 at 0.975v) should be perfectly aligned, all the next ones to the right can be lowered randomly without any precision, the only rule is that they should be lower than the "main" dot. After you hit "apply" chart will form the straight line
@@Neiva71 IDK how turboboost works on Turing but I think it is similar to pascal thus it slowly drops after breaching 60 degrees by small steps like 10-15 mhz
Don't often watch your videos, but everytime I get a chance I am amazed by the content that you create!
Reapplying some quality thermal paste can help quite a bit as well, especially on older hardware. Had a used FE 780ti for my GF's build that was loud as hell, but opened her up and put some new thermal paste and it ran much cooler even without adjusting fan curve.

I just completed my build in a ghost s1 with a 3950x (large tophead) with some help of your channel. I switched from the standard kraken aio fans to noctua fans and the system is almost silent, a huge difference compared to before. Thanks for your tips!

Also flipping or moving your fans for a better airflow path can improve both noise and thermals.
Great video! I have huge noise problems with build after i got Ghost S1. I don't enjoy gaming anymore, or at least it's almost impossible without using a headset. My Strix GTX 1080 makes so much noise in Ghost S1 because of turbulence of the holes in the side-panel. Also i use Corsair H100X AIO cooler with custom low-noise BeQuiet fans mounted, to cool my 9700K. The fans itself are pretty low-noise, even under load. But i think the pump noise is annoying, when the PC is idle.

Rubber fan mounts instead of metal screws worked wonders for me. Less vibration = less noise.
Another tip: try to refresh thermal paste application if it wasnt done in the last year or so. It might allow you to achieve same or better cpu and gpu thermals with same or lower fan speeds.
No need to manually select and drag every single point after your desired target clock/frequency. Just hold shift and drag the mouse to the right, starting at your target point (but not directly selecting the dot, or you will move the whole curve up/down instead). Then the selected area will turn blue, and now you can click one of the points within this selecting, hit shift+return, and manually enter your desired clock frequency. Et voilá, all of the points within the selected entry are now set to this frequency, making the curve flat.
To clear the area selection, just double click anywhere in the editor window (but again, not directly on a dot).
I will experiment with building my own wooden pc case. It'll be mounted under the desk surface. And construction is basically a straight through channel, with noise traps on either ends(sound deadening material in and nearby noisetraps). Air intake and exhaust of 3cm narrow, but full height slits. The tunnel-chassis will have an internal size, very close to two 14cm fans and those will be close to intake slit. Also the space left over around the fans will be sealed off, so that worm air can't reverse due to turbulence or pressure, and then feed fans. For mATX board, chassis size of 60x30x19cm, that narrow 19x60cm side will be base/top. Side panels 60x30cm. Dimmensions given for 10mm plyboard. Hope it works

I already used some of your advise,
like my gtx 1070 is moddified with the Morpheus II core edition and 2 noctua 12x25 controlled by Speedfan.
Plus Nh-d15 with chromax fans and white covers installed in the meshify C in white.
The rest of the cooling is handeled by noctuas chromax with white rubber corners 3x120 in the front 2x140 in the top and 1x120 in the back.
The 2B build looks good whith only 2 white light strips but one prob i got is the i7 7700k weird temps spikes i locked im to not go above 4.2ghz to get my temps in check( dont go further than 65).
I dont realy understand why when im web browsing the temp go from 35 on all cores to something like 45/60 and then go back to normal like nothing happen.
Anw love your vids and this channel deserve a lot more attention.

Setting a maximum FPS in games also helps. I was playing CS:GO and my RTX 2060 was almost screaming (I play in 1440p), but I realized my frame rates were well above what my monitor could put out (200+). So using the console, I set a max fps to my monitor's max and my fans are barely spinning now.

I have an EVGA Superclocked GTX 1060 3GB. I don’t like the noise levels of my card, and I have mitigated them by reducing the power limit, but I haven’t practiced enough with undervolting to feel comfortable... just yet.
I actually just today ditch my Intel stock cooler for a 15 dollar used CPU cooler (Similar to Deepcool Frostwin in size with smaller fan) and the difference in noise in drastic. My PC only audible on high GPU load only now.
Please do an undervolting tutorial!!

Ive noticed my corsair sf600 gets really loud under load in the Dan A4 itx case.
So i was wondering if maybe changing the psu to fan-less will have a drastic change to acoustics??

Was wondering if you had the specs or a pc part picker link to you Ghost S1 builds. I'm comfortable with building a rig in a mid tower case, but not very knowledgeable with SFF case builds, but I like the idea.
What type of motherboard would I need for a Ryzen 3 build, hopefully with a NVMe SSD HDD slot.

Efficient PSU would also be useful. I got some pwm fans for my pc and dropped the rpm pretty low but was still hearing the hum of a fan. Turns out I couldn't hear my case fans, it was the PSU fan. It's a bronze rated PSU and also 12yrs old and while it has performed pretty will I never realised it was contributing so much noise. Thought it was CPU cooler fans or GPU fans etc. My CPU is cooled enough with 900rpm and the gpu fans turn off below 60C so could be inaudible if not for that PSU fan whirring away.
PSU is very important. My SF600 gold is the loudest component in my pc when I play more demanding games. The fan curve is very aggressive and the only way to fix it is to replace it with a noctua fan and you need to solder the cables. The newer SF600 platinum, the SF750 and all SF450s do no have this problem because the fan curve is much more reasonable.
My pc: Case silverstone sugo 13, corsair h60 in push pull config, r7 1700x @3.9ghz, msi gaming gtx 970, trindent z @3200mhz, gigabyte b350 mini itx (first mini itx board to come out for ryzen in the uk)
@Count Noctua Well yeah, the SF600 is a very very popular itx PSU, and even the gold version is practically platinum level efficient, it's just that they overtuned the fan curve for 0 reason. Which is why they released a newer version and made this EOL.
No mention of perhaps swapping out the PSU or eliminating vibrations that may exist?

just use amd stock heatsink from age of fx series and put it to max rpm and you have "server" fan
Hi! Love your videos! But may you tell me about blower style coolers for GPU, for example 5700 XT. I thought this type of cooler works better for Mini ITX cases?
Also ONLY use PWM fans. For example I have be quiet pure wings 2 120mm, pwm ones and just 3 pin, cost the same, pwm ones I can't hear, and 3pin are quiet but still audible, with the same bios settings.
Voltage controlled fans are fine as long as you set an appropriate fan curve (and if your bios can control them on whatever header they're connected to).

If you're the lucky owner of an Intel Goo-equipped CPU - delid and apply liquid metal. Dropped like 10*C on my 7700K. The whole procedure took me about 30 minutes, I finished it off with a copper IHS.
What do you think, Can I use a 2080 TI (3fan version Zotac) and full ATX12V Psu with that case ? I'd love to
Just built my Ghost S1 a month ago, custom hardline tubing, 9960X + 2080 Ti, and now GTA V opened for 10 minutes with air con on 21C the tophat is leaving me burn marks.
Also important is to check if your intake vs your exhaust so you do no starve the inside of the case of fresh air. Negative pressure is okay but doesn't overdo it.
The music in this video is too quiet. It took me a lot of time to figure out it was actually there, and it made me think I was hearing things.
Otherwise excellent video with great advice!
Use better thermal paste and possibly liquid metal with a CPU delid.
I would do:
Delid+ liquid metal
Do Die lapping your ihs if you keeping your stock ihs.
Swap IHS for copper one
(240mm Asetek AIO)
Get cpu cooler with copper plate
Thermal grizzly paste
Very good fans
Noctua are good but expensive so I would recommend noise blocker fans they are much cheaper and same good.
If you feel comfortable adjust your clocking (under-volt)
Custom fan curve
But most importantly get the right air flow
Too much positive or too much negative pressure will destroy your temps.

I did all that and managed to get my 7700k @4.8GHz to 78°c under load after 1hour in Prime.
good tips.
I would also recommend to place your case fans as exhaust. add a spacer if they're within 5 mm from a surface (turbulence) have them mounted with rubber pads against vibration. make sure the case exhaust fans are aimed upwards. if you have a low profile CPU aircooler, aim the fan at the board.
Also, getting custom length PSU cables can help not block airflow.
Upgrade your CPU/GPU for more power efficiency and reduced thermals. Ryzen 5 5800X3D is best for AM4 boards.
Get rid of any HDD and replace it with SSD's
De-shroud your GPU and add case fans with spacers.
Upgrade your GPU to have a better heatsink/more heatpipes
If that fails, go for watercooling
Offset your PSU to make sure your GPU can breathe (especially on flow through design)
as far as effectiveness for cooling goes: (strong correlation with risk)
Direct die cooling + liquid metal > delid+ liquid metal + IHS lapping + liquid metal > IHS lapping + liquid metal > IHS lapping + thermal grizzly paste > liquid metal > thermal grizzly paste
Combining with Optimums tips:
Upgrade CPU cooler
Set custom fan curve
Buy better fans: Phantek T30 > Noctua A12x25
Undervolt CPU & GPU
Upgrade Case FormD T1 > Dan A4 H2O
If you have an older PC: dust it off with a can of compressed air and replace the thermal paste
If you have AC, control the ambient temperature.

Will the Zalman CNPS8900 fit with the X570-I Gigabyte motherboard? Building in a Ghost, trying to cool a 3700x. My current L12S will likely not work with bending, as my ram is 1.5mm taller than the LPX people usually use when they bend the L12S

Only thing that ramps up atm is my ROG Strix 1080, and I'm ok with that as its only during gaming in which case i'd most likely be wearing headphones anyways

I need to try undervolting my 8700k. GPU fine but CPU keeps getting way to hot in my ncase. Even have a shuriken 3 with noctua af12. Had the u9s with two redux fans before. But something wrong cuz 2070 doesnt go over 75 degrees in load.
It's well worth it. The only hassle is to find a stable voltage but even 0.1V less does a lot when it comes to temps. A good thing is that undervolting is harmless even if you do too much.
I'm running 9 fans in my Lian Li 011 Dynamic case with 2 360mm radiators. It's whisper quiet and temps stay in the low 30's C.
guitarprogrock what did you use for setting up the custom curves for case fans and GPU? I have the same setup as well but using an X72 Kraken, any help is appreciated :)

Have you tried the Kaze fans from Scythe? Those are pretty quiet.
My 2 cents
- Get a bigger case with with some noise cancelation and larger fans = better airflow, lower noise.
- Costom fan curves.
- Get a kraken g12 for gpu.
- Only use SSD. I use external hdd which I turn off when not in use.
- Don't place you computer on your desk.
- Open a window if the weather is cold. Put on AC if warm.
- Use overear headset

H200i case running auto noise adapted mode it set all fans to 700rpm and temps never go above 47oC doing anything ;-) "fans are Corsair ml fans... super quiet at 39db

Very much appreciated from a noob that was traumatized by a blower style GPU. Good to know I don't need to really look at a custom loop, which is far beyond my current skill set.
Theirs always the g12, easier then a loop and a bit cheaper. While also giving you better cooling

just cleaned and changed the thermalpaste on my over 6 years old gpu and it literally runs 15 - 20 degrees C colder and with it a whole lot more quiet! best upgrade I made yet

downclock the gpu in after burn or force the fan lower.
Silentpcreview.com, while defunct still provides some really great info on how to get your pc super quiet.
Also I want to point out that in their testing they found that more ventilation + lower fan rpms is the way to go. So rather than spending extra for noise dampening try replacing your fans with low rpm ones and set the fan curve as low and quiet as possible.
They also found that pump noise alone often ruined a water cooled build's ability to remain silent.
Oh and look at puget systems. They build PCs for ultra low noise environments, so their research can be incredibly useful when picking parts.
Isn't delidding a great option to reduce noise when you're using a CPU that benefits from it?
It's an excellent option. For a CPU heavy game (although it is in an alpha 2 development stage) that I run with my i7 67k where all cores and threads are maxed out, I got a difference of ten degrees from mid 70s to the mid 60s.
You shouldn't need to do this with the newer ryzens (I hear that they run really cool actually) things like my 67k and even the 8xxx series from intel can really benefit.

damn, .850v and its still at 76c. the 2080s I own will do 1905 @ .900v, same rpm but will max out at 64c. Not bragging, just surprised by the temps for such a low undervolt.
I only have two aktive fans in my system that runs on 5V. If i do office work or multimedia it is quiet. Unearable quiet. But if i play games my gtx 970 is loud. I dont like that
Undervolting ha saved my ass in the summer heat. My CPU cooler fan died so I just took a 3 pin case fan and slapped it on the cooler. Works fine but it has very low rpm so when it got hot in the summer my CPU got a bit too hot. So I undervolted my RX570 and because it puts out less heat in the case the CPU runs cooler too. I didn't bother to buy a propper fan because I'm gonna build a new PC anyway soon
Try a Morpheus 2
My RX570 is a Sapphire Nitro model, I don't need a better GPU cooler. When I sell this PC I will switch the 3 pin case fan I have right now on the CPU for a 4pin one, that should work just fine
got my r5 3600 almost 3 weeks ago, with game boost and pbo enabled my cpu went over 95°C (max temp) and the voltage went at 1.6v, i was like wtf happened, i'm using stock cooler but wtf, i just went in bios and disabled pbo and game boost and i put the frequency at 4.1 ghz, the voltage around 1.375v and everything is working fine (i lose 100 mhz but it doesn't matter), but i still don't understand why people say that it's bad modify voltage :/
Custom water loops don't make the pc quieter.. You ll add the pump high pinch noise.
Here's my tip; Don't plug case fans into the AIO port of your ASUS mobo...that way, your fans don't go full speed momentarily each time you start your PC.
Edit: Wait, with undervolting, I thought you would basically shift the points on the graph towards the left. Basically, you're maintaining the same frequency, but shifting it towards the left, so that the frequency is reached by a lower voltage. It looks like you're downclocking and undervolting.

You dont need to undervolt r5 2600, just use it at stock with good cooler(212 evo is fine), and set fan profile to be at about 600rpm untill 60c, done.

My Gigabyte 1660s OC is loud AF at full load. I don't notice tho until I listen cos game soundtrack n that so it's not there but it's there.
Put your max fan speed at 64% in msi afterburner that's 1800 rpm. No reason to run it at 3000 rpm.
Also switch the thermal paste

I’ve found that the RTX founders cards run far too loud at idle - they can’t go below 40% (even in Afterburner) I’m not sure how you put up with it Ali!
Yep, totally agree with you there. It's bearable for me, just. One of the reasons I'm doing a custom loop for this build soon.
Just slap a Morpheus II and a pair of noctua fans on it. Much easier than making a loop, and gives you all the cooling you need. My lightly OC'd and undervolted gtx 1080 goes to 53°c with that setup. In normal gaming it usually only reach 49°c.
