I’m just under 6’4” and just ended up avoiding single wall tents altogether. The X-Dome 1+ is still kinda tight lengthwise for us tall guys, but I personally don’t mind if my feet touch a little bit in a double wall tent and the headroom is very nice! I love it! I really wish tent manufacturers would add just a couple more inches in length or make tall versions because I would love it even more if I didn’t have to lay diagonally.
I've been looking for a suitable UL tent for some time and your video helped a lot! I myself am 6'6 and live in Germany so I want to have all the information before I buy such an expensive tent. Everyone has recommended the XMid 2+ without reference but that's where your video comes in. It's so important to see how you lie in it as a tall person to get an idea. Hope you make a similar video with the Tarptent!
It's not only height but your sleeping pad thickness, quilt, and feet size. 6 ft, 2 here. Had and sold off xmid 1pro, xmid 2 solid, and zpacks Altaplex. Ended trying a Tarptent Double Rsinbow li. Works great for a 1 person tent with a lot of room both at foot and head.
Yup, sounds about the same as my experience. Can you put two people in the Double Rainbow? When I had it, I remember thinking it was really a one-person tent.
Nice low wind pitch too! I have the solid version and live in Gardnerville, NV. So I'm familiar with the high winds and uneven ground challenges with that tent. I do love mine for myself, my wife and our put, but I'm 5'7" Sorry for your height struggles... I wasn't aware of your challenges. Dang that's rough! I'm not sure I can wait for the x-dome 2+ lol!! I might end up grabbing a 1+ for me n the pup. I think it might be an easier tent for the Sierra range in general? Thanks for the awesome content too!! It's cool seeing backpacking and tenkara together.
Thank you for the review. One of the few I found which was actually helpful. I'm 6'5" also. Through reviews and process of elimination, the X mid 2 had moved to the top of my list. The Lunar Duo seemed like it would work. Did you really like it, or just OK? I will keep searching and checking in on your posts. Thanks again from Oregon.
@@Eric-ul6qw Glad you found it helpful! I loved and still love the Lunar Duo. It’s HUGE inside, pitches easy. The two downsides I see are weight (45oz) and you need to guy it out well if there’s wind. That said I’ve had it in some good thunderstorms with hail and wind, and it held fine! It’s very cheap compared to DCF but that’s also why it’s nearly twice the weight. It’s an exceptional amount of space and fits two BIG people. It’s so big inside you could sit four people playing cards in there easy. I’m ordering the Tarptent Dipole 2 tomorrow and will do a review asap.
@@MostlyTenkara Thanks for your response. I'm more of a weekend warrior, the Tarptent is out of my league. Have you ever come across a single person tent that was acceptable for tall people?
@ the cheaper sil-poly Double Rainbow is on sale today for 10% off: www.tarptent.com/product/double-rainbow/ As is the non-DCF Dipole (1/2 the price of the DCF version)
I’m ‘only’ 6’2"1/2 but still I can relate. A lot of ultralight tents are only suitable up to about a length of 6’…Just ordered the X-Dome 1+, hoping that it will be a good match for me.
Even for someone not quite your height, the lack of vertical space at the foot and head is a problem with many trekking pole tents that maximize vertical space in the center. I think they prioritize livability (sitting up) over sleeping. Have you considered an A-frame style tent? Something like a Tarptent Protrail Li? Because the high points (poles) are at the long ends rather than the center, they're much better for vertical head and foot clearance. They do sacrifice livability though-- great for sleep but not so much for hanging out. I have a Yama Cirriform (discontinued DCF version) with those attributes. Works great for solo sleep.
Thanks for the comment! I had the precursor to the ProTrail years ago and didn't like that style with the door at the head of the tent, and that I couldnt sit up in the tent. If the Dipole 2 is long enough, I think it will solve my problems, plus I love the idea of windows on all sides. I'm gonna get it next week. I'll do a full review when I am able to take it out!
@@MostlyTenkara Yeah, they suck for livability. The Dipole looks to be plenty long and tons of volume at foot and head. I'm sure it'll be a winner for you even after your son grows taller. It will be good to hear about how well it does in wind and about pitching it on those tight Sierra benches.
The Big Agnes Copper Spur Tall version is your answer. It has a 96 inch floor and steep walls. At 6 foot 5 its the only tent ive been able to find that checks all the boxes. I had the X-Mid pro 2+ as well and I'm returning it for exactly the same reason. Love the tent but I'm just simply too tall.
Great review man, agree with all your points! I've had the pro 2+ for over a year and at 6ft3, and in high enough winds, I'd also have the walls slap on my head. I also decided to get a dipole 2 (dw instead of li though) and pretty much all the height qualms I had with the pro 2+ has been rectified. But I will say, the dipole is a lot more finicky to pitch with those end struts imo compared to the xmid. Would love to get your thoughts on it if you do end up getting it!
I am 6'5" and have the same issue with the Durston X-Mid 2. Especially when it is raining. It is just too short. But I also have a Tarpent Double Rainbow, which does have adequate space for me.
Thanks for the kind words. Usually when tall people pitch the X-Mid 2/2+ they will sleep on the longer diagonal of the tent created by the non-rectangular floor. We have seen tall hikers have good results with that, like this: ruclips.net/video/zv00YNhP7zc/видео.html In this case, it looks like the tent was pitched quite low (lower to the ground than normal) which would lower the clearance in these two corners, so you then you were oriented on the shorter diagonal instead, which has steeper end walls which is quite a bit shorter and doesn't work well for someone of your height. So yes in windy conditions where you want to pitch quite low I can see it being too short like this, whereas a regular pitch that is higher should work well for taller hikers on that longer diagonal. Thanks for putting this together and using our gear. - Dan
Thanks Dan! Yeah, we had high winds so I needed to pitch as low as possible, and even with that, dusk was blowing into the tent all night. Just want to say again, I love all your stuff! It's so hard finding gear that's big enough for me--I have high hopes for the X-Dome 2!
Is there more room in the standard x mid 2 solid? Cheers I’m 6”5 from the uk so I value the performance in high winds but I honestly thought I’d have no problems in the solid x mid 2 with length cheers
@@remyd1984 Normally tall hikers are quite pleased in all of the X-Mids, but it depends on how it is used, as I will explain. The non-rectangular floor in the X-Mid gives a long diagonal and a shorter one. Normally tall hikers will sleep on the longer diagonal where they have a lot of length. In this case, the tent was pitched quite low so the roof is low at the corners on the long diagonal, so the user chose to sleep on the shorter diagonal which has higher corners, but the length is much less. So the tent is too short if it is pitched quite a bit lower than normal like this, but with a regular height pitch is quite viable to sleep on the longer diagonal that is extremely long. I will link to another video showing a hiker who is 6'4" with a bulky sleep setup (dual stacked pillows) who has ample length in the regular X-MId 2 (which is the same size as the X-Mid 2 Solid). I will put that in the next comment since YT sometimes auto-deletes comments with links.
I really get this being 6ft3 oof. When you get a new tent and it has 220cm or 230cm(7ft2- 7ft5) length base. Now we have a few cm up mat and more in a sleeping bag we touching walls with our size 12 feet, all we get is major condensation and wet out top and bottom 🤣
