My guess for the engines on the orbiter instead of the external tank, is that the external tank was left to burn up in the atmosphere and the orbiter returned to earth. This saves a lot, being that the engines are a large portion of the cost of the shuttle. But that’s just what I think, I’m not an expert.

All of the parts of the US shuttle (orbiter, external tank and solid rocket boosters) were reusable, but the parts that were ejected on launch (tank and boosters) needed extensive refurbishment each time. It wasn’t an amazing design, but it worked. The Soviet shuttle was the same, all parts reusable, but without the engines on the orbiter there was more payload capacity and less dead weight to lift into orbit. The Soviet one wasn’t perfect, either. I suppose it’s hard to evaluate the “improvements” with only one official spaceflight. 🚀

It was awesome! well done! what do you think was the coolest shuttle from a technical point of view? more advanced !?

Endeavour was the last shuttle built, so it was the most advanced by far. I’m really fond of Buran, though, because the Soviets “fixed” a lot of problems with the American design that could only be feasible to fix with completely new build. They’re all awesome though! 😁

Big rocket thrusters are to look cool and impress the chicks! They also tried fitting a radio aerial with a foxtail and fluffy dice on the rear view mirror but they were cut from the budget due to the exorbitant expenditure on the exhast pipes.

Buran wasnt the name of the orbiter that flew to space, the craft itself is a buran orbiter. The actual name was something cryptic like 1.01 or so ... cant rember.

What do you do with these Space Shuttles? Do you hang them on the wall?

Yep! They hang side by side. Not sure what else to do with them. 😁
