- Game Description -
Middara is a 1-4 player cooperative choose-your-own-adventure style miniatures board game. Players assume the role of a party of adventurers in an ultra-modern fantasy setting that exists alongside our very own Earth. During the game, players will experience an in depth, fully narrative-driven adventure that contains over 90 hours of content. Throughout the narrative you and three of your friends will confront real decisions that change the course of the story and its outcome.
Players will face many dangerous adversaries throughout the story and will take part in heated combat with these foes. Middara features an innovative, dice based combat system for these encounters. Based on their equipment and abilities, players will have access to unique two-dice combinations that will increase their attack and damage potential in a variety of ways. In addition to numbers, dice have a particular set of symbols on each face that can be spent according to players currently equipped weapons and abilities. With nine different types of dice, over 110 unique abilities and 150 unique pieces of equipment the possibilities for different character builds are endless.
What makes Middara so compelling is that the outcomes of story decisions and encounters have far-reaching effects that determine how the story moves and resolves. Friends and family might get killed, or they may survive. Maybe the players avoid some problems entirely, only to be faced with a whole new challenge.
Gameplay Features:
Narrative-driven campaign that contains over 90 hours of content.
Unique dice-based success system featuring multiple dice that players can upgrade throughout the campaign.
36 modular map tiles representing different locations in the world, such as magical forests, caves, and swamps!
A.I. controlled monsters, NPCs, challenges, traps, and other narrative-driven obstacles.
Campaign character progression via a point buy system allowing players to ditch traditional classes and instead focus on building the character they want to play.
Over 110 unique Disciplines and over 150 unique pieces of equipment.
Stand alone scenarios for when you aren't playing with your campaign group, or even when you are!

Haha thanks for the help!
haha just made the same comment above :D
Couple other rule corrections. As long as the creature has line of sight to your heroes, they will attempt to reach them using the creature ability regarding range (the last one). Provided that the end result is a successful attempt. The crawlers will try to jump the chasm using their movement, then try to perform an attack against the heroes. Additionally, your attacks have 2 parts. Your success to hit and damage dealt. Your damage is not calculated in the attempt to hit the target. This is why the numbers on the dice matter. You have to hit the target to start using icons or abilities that calculate damage. Any number that exceeds the defense of the target is turned into damage. Subtracted by armor value. If an attack is EQUAL or exceeds the target value. The attack succeeds and damage is calculated. Also, using Nightingale's longsword should be orange and purple dice since finesse takes effect when used on the 1h side combined with the talisman.
I'm really glad to see Middara getting some love. Will be watching avidly.
Big fan of campaign games! Loved your Oath videos, looking forward to more! :D
Thanks so much! :)
Thank you for showing the game off to us!
Not sure if this rule was already brought up in the comments, but Finesse is always active even when a weapon is exhausted meaning Shira would be able to rol two white dice on her attacks
Rule mistake with big impact:
Combatants with the swarm tag: you only get 1 loot when defeating the last one in the group.
This means you got 3x as much loot as you should have.
Haha yes, we have not spent it yet :)
We will adjust!!
Yay! Middara! can't wait to see how yo guys play through this! :)
Middara is awesome. I loved playing through Act 1 and am waiting for Acts 2 and 3.
Same here!
All hail the algorithm gods of the tube of you.
Glad to see the family having fun
Never watched any Middara content before.
This looks like fun.
Really well done doing it like this with a GM reading the story, and playing the enemies I suppose. XD
Looks like a fun story but I don't think I would have been able to find the players that will be willing to play through so much text and story.
So, I am happy to experience it through you.
Great video!
Good luck with the campaign, it's great fun
Love it! More Middara please :)
I love this game, and have gotten back into it after receiving the 1.2 update kit. I will be following your play through with great interest.
I haven’t read the 1.2 rule book but aren’t the symbols only useable if you break through the monster defense? So if the cave sickle has 8 defense and you roll a total of 7 you never get to use any of the symbols for bonus damage.
That's still correct yes. Attack and damage are two separate steps, so a 7 is a miss and you don't get to add damage.
Never watched any Middara content before.
This was pretty well done and looked pretty fun.
But I don't think I would have been able to get the players that will go through it with such a huge amount of text to read.
So, I'm glad to experience the story through watching you playing.
Same!
They have created 'spark notes' which summarise the story. Google Middara Sparknotes to find it :)
They have spark notes on their website for just the key points of each block of dialogue. They also have the the audio for free on Forteller, HOWEVER I believe the audio is from the version 1.0 adventure book and it got edited and improved for the later versions so it’s mostly the same, but not word for word exact.
Been a while since I played this game, I went all in on the upcoming season and this video series will help me get back into the mood to finish this game up.
Yay! Need to get this to my table myself, it’s impatiently awaiting my action on the top of the boardgaming shelf.
You’re not using the Forteller app? Middara Act 1 is for free.
Very cool playthrough! Thank you so much! With the rather high rating of Middara it is really strange that there are hardly any plays on the tube and yours is the highest quality there coul be :)
I guess it in not so easily soloable and that might be a reason ^^ Looking forward to whatever comes next and greatly enjoyed your narration. I dread it a bit because once it gets to the table I will have to do the on-the-fly translations ^^ Still looking forward to when it gets here :D
I soloed it. The symbols can be a little much during a long battle when I'm juggling four characters and looking at what weapons and skills can help. Still, it was very doable and fun :)
I'm so conflicted between desperately watching this and not wanting to spoil something for myself...
Like the game, keep it up!
Cave sickles only spawn loot when the entire card is defeated. So if three sickles I spawned each with their own color they all need to be defeated before you get loot. They have the swarm keyword.
Yea :) I’ll steal some rewards from the crew!
I'm pumped to see this game played since I just dont have the cash to get ti myself
reprint after reprint of act 1 but no full pledge delivered yet...5 years late and counting!..love the channel guys.
Great work 🎉
love middara need to finish this game
More would be awesome!!!!!
Love ❤ this play though.
I need to reread the rules for 1.2 and i hate to say it but despite Quack mediating the rules there were a number that got wrong. A, spawned monsters go right after the turn that they spawned on. B, rook ignores the negative effects of the 1st instance of heavy. C, Remi's flight cost 2 and shady step cost 1. D, Time tokens only get added if no enemies spawn or activate. E, Hammer helm is any die. F, Consumables expire at the end of a chapter must be new. But that doesn't surprise me as it was normal to get all the worst ones out of the deck by purchasing them so that when you gain more its only the good ones. Not to mention that you used to end up with a lot of money amd nothing to spend them on.
This was our first swing into the main game for some time! Getting started there are a lot of rules to follow. Thanks for the corrections / catches :) some of them get figured out as we kept playing - many we will make a note of now going forward as we review the rules again!
Over all, I'm happy to see you guys play this game. I always enjoy seeing you guys play.
Cave sickles have the swarm tag.
That means lot is only drawn when the last of a group is defeated.
So they drew 3x as much lot as they should have.
In this scenario they were just using Time Tokens to track the number of rounds, as stated in the Encounter description. That wasn't an error here.
@@davidarlington1206 I thank you for that correction.
Oh and characters don’t refresh all at once. They do it when it’s their turn.
Attack roll at 27:05 added two magical damage. The attack actually missed as many has already pointed out, but adding magical damage is something you do on spells and not normal attacks.
This correction is half right and half wrong:
Yes you only add symbols after you hit the attack (exept like symbols that increase your hit die, like on the waterloa enemy card (not in this video))
so in general the attack would have missed and so no damage dealt
But magical damage is not for Spells, mag. Damage is a form of damage that ignores armor if an enemy had some and its relevant if enemys get some form of resistances or immunities (like physikal resistance)
To be more pricese, spells cant even use symbols, the only exeption is when you empower the spell and than only the bocks on the black die count and only to increase the spellpower by one per book
the symbols on the bottom of the weapon cards are purely for attacks with it
comment for the Algorithm God of RUclips!
need to see more before i buy
All hail the Algorithm Gods.
Feeding the algorithm... QUACK!
Got the game recently.
But waiting for the bounties that come with act 2 and 3 before starting the playthrough.
Some are used during act 1
Very interesting setup, like a DnD game. Do you suggest this game for solo gamer? Does it work with less than 4 characters?
I needs to be run with 4 players. The game flow itself it not so bad so I could run it with a single player however - I would need to walk around the table a bit to manage everything. I think 2p is great and 4p with a good group would be my favorite.
Ya they do have a way to play at 2 or 3 characters. Basically, each hero that you DONT play as, can ‘attach’ to a hero that you are playing and it will give that character a little buff. And 4 full characters is too much, there always is that option!
Good to know - I have not seen that play style talked about much nor tried it myself! However, it is there in the rules!
@@BoardGameOfficer
@@Quackalope ya the alternate player count version was made well after the initial kickstarter so it wasn’t too advertised and honestly I don’t know how play tested it was. But it is an option haha
@@BoardGameOfficerMany felt that it wasn't balanced very well. Often, they recommend playing all 4 combatants normal instead.
I have far too many campaign games, most of which I have completed. But Middara is definitely on my list to buy. I just had ISS Vanguard delivered though, so I might get that one done first.
A series of the 🐦, yes please 🙏
Quack
thanks for the video, rules are hard for this game, i had to search a tutorial just to play the tutorial of the game!
We will keep dialing them in :) - I find that recording something only tends to highlight the mistakes!
The Gods Will Watch you
thanks
I saw some other corrections but I didn't see this one. You only add time tokens if monsters weren't in the inniative this round.
For sure - I don’t think we added time tokens as a count down for the encounter. I could be wrong. That was not the intention i don’t think!
@@Quackalope I could be wrong, it seemed that way. sorry if I'm worng.
@@Quackalope just noticed another thing. Cave Sickles are a swarm, you only get a loot card when you kill all of hte sickles on a single card not after every sickle. Also, thanks for covering this game. I love Middara nad don't thing it gets enough love. Thrileld to see someone covering it so more folks can find it.
Wow, that is a important catch . . . time to go read closer and steal some money from the team!@@stevemayne24
Feeding the algorithm👌🏻
Thank you!
Hey, please do a full series of Middara. And... eventually its more like 80 hrs campaign, if we include reading, and if you use Bounty hunting, you might get 100 hrs out of it.
Some rules have been misplayed, but who cares, enough people stated it already and you guys know, where to fix it. Someone really seems happy to play it :D Enjoy the Game. Give us the Full Game Playthrough and when you start building you own discipline tech trees, let us see what you took and what was the thought process behind it, cuz that's very intresting to see imo.
See ya next time.
I never saw a link to the game in the description
let´s goooooo. Nithingales first attack would actually have missed thou. with a 7 dice roll you wouldn´t get trough the Cavesickle defence. You only add symbols to your roll for dmg counting not to hit the target. Unless you have a Item that telly you explicit about adding to the attack roll not dmg. that´s 2 different things. ^^
Some reason never have enjoyed games with narrative books. I do like above and below. I like gloomhavens digital also. I like the story through mechanics more like kdm
Fair enough! It can be a lot to get into - the ones you listed have more emergent storytelling as well!
Quack!!
