Why I Like Workprints: The Mask (1994)

- Workprint: a rough version of a motion picture, used by the film editor(s) during the editing process. These usually contain incomplete special effects, un-dubbed audio, and fill-in/deleted scenes. *The audio of this video is from the work print copy.
This is part 1 of my new series "Why I Like Workprints." I was watching a workprint of "The Mask" and decided to splice together scenes in the movie that had special effects with the final version. I was interested in this movie because I wanted to see Jim Carrey's facial movements and mannerisms without the mask itself. I always get a kick watching Jim Carrey perform.

I dont think you realise how elastic Carrey is until you watch the work print without the CGI effects

People don't talk about Jim Carrey in The Mask enough. Such an influential and underrated actor. This movie DESPERATELY needs a 4K release with never before seen special features.
I love how they used the music from Beetlejuice as temp music. Also Jim is amazing. I've been obsessed with him since childhood

aw, the power of INDUSTRIAL LIGHT & MAGIC.
I've been so enraptured by this movie, as a child and still as an adult, and to see how Jim acts without the effects is just another added layer of astonishment for me. The scene where he actually snaps his head away from the mask when he pulls it off and truly acts like hes wearing it is unbelievable! I'll love Jim Carrey for the impact he had on me as a child and all the quirkiness in every character he played

That's so great to be able to watch it in order to really understand how CGI teams worked.
That's funny to know they used Back to the Future III as a temp score for the whole Coco Bongo scenes at the end.
This is so fascinating watching this type of stuff. They put a painful amount of work into this movie.
After he put the Loki mask on, I was expecting Ipkiss to transform into Michael Myers, complete with a white Captain Kirk mask and blue jumpsuit.

What’s different about these scenes? First it is in open matte. Then some scene are storyboarded when they where not finished.

Nicely done. The Mask Workprint is excellent, showing how some relatively small edits made quite a change in the overall tone of the film and, in particular, to the character of Tina.
Not only must i thank you for uploading this, but huge props for the iasip music too!! Absolute taste

(2) A number of scenes are removed or shortened to change this, but originally the introduction of the Mask & Stanley into her life makes her question and overcome her cynicism with a more romantic view of life . Thus her speech when visiting Stanley in jail has more weight to it.

@@thebuzzedkillpodcast3394 I have it along with a bunch of other workprints with a whole box of bootleg dvds that I collected from flea markets years ago in storage somewhere but i know they're in my garage somewhere among a bunch of other boxes, if i can fish them out i really would gladly rip the discs and put them online somewhere if i can

Impressive the Carrey performance, but we also we should give props to the SFX team that did a work just as impressive to make the cartoon persona a reality.
amusing how when a workprint leak for a kids movie of a little blue train causes hysteria, yet when this came out no one gave a toss!
Workprint = low quality, videotaped, some glitches at the beginning and some black and white lines and also drawing and brighter colors

90% of the effects was jim on his own. Oh we didn't get the part in the corridor with his crazy neighbor going ahhhhhhhhhhh and he responds the same with the hammer in his hand while his eyes pop out and chin bounces hahaha

It's not. There's just more OF it, so you get burnt out on it more easily.
Hello, i would like to talk to you about some things, i believe that we share some interests
So when Stanley takes off the mask he doesn't have it in his hand?? Oh how clever.
(1) If you watch the workprint Tina has clearly been made cynical by the decisions she has had to make in life. She is angry about having been forced to go to secretly video the bank's security, but she feels she has no choice if she is to get a chance in her chosen career. When she meets Stanley in Landfill Park she makes this clear saying "I do what I have to to get by in this world".
So...um...tvmastermandude. If I were to get down on my knees and beg you to post the whole workprint of The Mask up on youtube, would it work? lol
What I'm saying is could you please post the entire up for us to see? Oh! (Plops down on knees) Ow...

Ruben Hernandez Most movies put temporary musical tracks from other movies into their work prints since the score isn't typically done yet.
