China’s universities just grabbed 6 of the top 10 spots in one worldwide science ranking - without changing a thing
      Updated: April 3, 2024 12.31pm EDT
Where once the list of universities with the highest scientific impact would have been dominated by U.S. and U.K. schools including Cambridge, Stanford, Harvard and MIT, the new top 10 list of universities with high scientific impact includes six universities from China.
What does this transformation mean for understanding scholarly excellence? I study the global research system and its contribution to social welfare. China’s swift progress in science and technology, propelled by investments in research and university strength, has alarmed the United States and other nations. Concerns are mounting that the U.S. may be losing its competitive advantage to an assertive rival, with potential implications for national security, economic standing and global influence. These new rankings will likely raise even more alarm

china is able to do this thanks to American sanctions, not in spite of it. necessity is the mother of innovations. you don't develop new technology if it is more cost effective to buy from the Americans. If you cant buy from the americnas then this is when it becomes profitable to develop your own. You basically have a monopoly in your country even if your product is initially inferior.

@Enigma-t6n it is doing x hoping for y but instead gets you the complete opposite. China is very capitalist. It's communist party is an oxymoron. The Chinese will only develop new technology if it makes them money. When there isn't USA sanction, it makes no sense to develop new technology. They can't compete with what Americans have. If they get banned from buying American goods, then you can bet they will begin developing new technologies of their own as a replacement because they can actually make profits selling them domestically. Basically money and necessity is what is making these breakthroughs.

The rise of open source technology represents a direct challenge to the US billionaire oligarch tech class, and that’s a win for the people, innovation, and democracy. For too long, a handful of US tech giants have dominated the global AI landscape, not through superior innovation, but by leveraging their vast wealth to stifle competition. They’ve systematically purchased promising AI startups-particularly from the UK and other parts of the world-before these companies could grow into true competitors. This isn’t innovation; it’s consolidation of power.

Open source. Incredible and a gift to the world! What a coup for emerging economics with limited resources but with talented scientists and engineers such as Iran and Egypt as 2 examples.
This is part of China's philosophy of "seeding the developing world" with tech and infrasture. With initiatives such as the Belt & Road (150+ countries), and BRICS. Countries that would otherwise be BLOCKED by US Hegemony and other Western Anglo Neocolonial powers.
Don't forget the incredible energy savings.
BTW, don't expect Trumps AI initiative to be very successful. Why? It's the US throwing money at the problem without any industrial or strategic policy and planning. And we KNOW the money will not be equably distributed. Much will be laundered to their "buddies" just like the Biden Admin did. Why do you think the big tech firms, deserted the Dem's and were in "Power Ranger" mode at Trumps inauguration?
Americans are morons to believe they can harness AI brainpower and keep it within their borders, or - unethically - only distribute it to slected partners, countries who kowtow to them.
Underestimating China, like they have with Russia, is a grave, almost unrecoverable strategic mistake. It guarantees that China will eventually take leadership as they already have with the majority of critical tech.
China's Education and Talent is a Grounding Force.
China graduates more PhD Scientists and Engineers, and grads in ALL STEM fields than the US and G7 countries combined!
China's University System is now ranked #1, most comprehensive, and their universities lead in many of the core critical technologies required of the "4th Industrial Revolution" which they also lead.
Unless the US can pull its head out of the "Zero-Sum Rabbit Hole" and discover "Win-Win" collaboration and equality with countries of color, America's tech future will be on the descending spiral.
And "This is the Way" to America's decline...

DeepSeek R1 outperforms o1, but is 97% cheaper, and we assume reduced costs is a function of progress, as is the case with every other industry on earth... I would argue DeepSeek is 4-5 years ahead of OpenAI at least when you factor in cost. And I see no indication Open AI wants to become cheaper, they basically the modern day AOL.

    Opinion Deepseek vs. Google AI
    1. Google has a large data base which provides more relevant and accurate results.
    2. Google provides less irrelevant results, saving time.
    3. Google could add the same features as their competitors, when they make your experience better. Could be Googles is more focused on your interests, with less distractions.
The infrastructure Billions of dollars being spent is for a safe place for several great data facts libraries and processing centers. DeepSeek will not have access to the libraries.

Chinese, with a MS degree from US university. Yes prestigious Chinese university cost 1000 - 500 USD a year. Yes Chinese students still come to US universities for grad schools. Mostly because it's easier to get a high paying job in US, not simply because US universities are a lot better, though they are generally better.
Chinese companies used to prefer hiring students graduated from US UK schools. But not anymore. Many Chinese schools are catching up. Especially in computer science area. If you want to be in academia you still required to get an overseas degree, because it is important to have overseas connection, either broaden your view (research / life or whatever), and also give your more connection in research.
