With various fees, worthless dealer "add-ons", destination and dock charges etc, etc, they tried to charge me $5k over the invoice. This included $80 for the air in the tires! Had a brand new 2016 Toyota Corolla that had issues within the first 20k miles. Car was at the dealership for 4 months. Generally however i agree toyotas are very reliable especially older ones but did put a bad taste in my mouth considering that car didnt do anything good, but come 2020 and working as a tech for toyota, i knew quality was going downhill and so was reliablity. We have so many new toyotas coming in with fuel injector issues, fuel pump issues, bypass valve issues, brake rotors warping within 10k miles, infotainment screens not working etc etc. Not to mention a decent amount blown engines and transmissions below 100k miles. Best bet if you want to own a reliable long lasting vehicle is to just buy a used toyota, lexus or a used bmw non turbo inline 6. Parts are cheaper by miles on some of these older cars.

Used to work for DENSO. In addition to my oxygen sensor workload, they asked if I wanted to get into fuel pumps. Luckily, I declined. There is a definite quality issue at TOyota these days, the 3.4L twin turbo V-6 is a mess. Sad for Toyota. However, compared to Kia and Hyundai,, Toyota will fix these issues much faster than their Korean counterparts. The use of turbos is wrong, but turbos are not able to surpass 150k miles without turbo replacement. How do I know, my company remans turbos. The CAFE requirements do put pressure on the mfgs to add turbos to their powertrains, but this is also a ticking timebomb. NIssan uses a variable compression engine in their Rogue three cylinder turbo. I think that cost cutting is also taking ahold of the industry, the VC NIssan engines are a good example. COnsumers must be more wary of all mfgs these days. Sad to see that Toyota is falling as well. Great video!

I researched the heck out of the Highlander, Honda Pilot Trailsport, Nissan Pathfinder and Subaru Ascent. I completely passed over Hyundai/KIA. I was looking to replace my tried and true 2017 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x. It was very difficult to replace a truck with an SUV but our needs have changed. I still wanted somewhat capable AWD for “soft roading” vs the great 4wd on the Pro-4x.
I settled on the 2024 Honda Pilot Trailsport. I really believed that the engineers did this particular trim level of the Pilot Trailsport right. Naturally aspirated V6, 10 speed transmission and specific changes to the tried and true Ivtm -4 awd system for the Trailsport. It is also capable of towing up to 5000 lbs and comes nicely equipped with some modern tech as well. I am trusting in the Honda reliability to keep this for the long term.
The Toyota Hylander had a turbo 4 and was much more expensive, and the Nissan (although it had a naturally aspirated v6) was nowhere near as well built as the Honda. The Subaru had a turbo 4 with CVT and I passed on that as well.
As mentioned in the video, do your homework and we should all make the manufacturers aware of issues and hold them accountable for “cheating” etc. Money talks!
So far I am really pleased with the Honda Pilot Trailsport.
Thanks for the great vid and info.

Sometimes we have to wonder, are they thinking of making future big profits, installing turbos on all vehicles. Toyota's have always had issues, but they used to not have issues that would prevent the car from driving. Modern engines are all turbocharged and finely tuned, so they won't tolerate manufacturing errors or a lack of maintenance. The days of skipping oil changes on your car are done. There are plenty of reliable engines out there, but they don't let you be lazy or cheap anymore. And that goes for manufacturers too. If they slip up in the factory, the engines will have problems. That wasn't always the case in the past.

100% this. Low tension rings, cam phasers, turbos. 5k mile oil changes people. Not 10 or 15k then you get issues. Old engines didn’t have these features so were less prone to having issues due to extended oil change intervals.

The car was not built correctly, which could cause engine or transmission problems. That's why they have that warranty. Otherwise if you'll pass that time with no engine or transmission problems that means it was built correctly. So buy 5 years old and 60,k miles with a long test drive keep up the maintenance and it will last 225,k ++ miles.

The rear bumper cover is slightly damaged over the years but the car is otherwise immaculate. I took it in to a body shop I trust this AM and I am willing to pay the $1700 to put a new cover on the car. I just do not understand paying 50--65k +++ for a new car. The one thing that kept Toyota very reliable is it did not change their engines and transmissions. The Toyota 4Runner kept the same platform for years. Not very fuel efficient, years of continuous r& d behind it. You're going to see issues with all the manufacturers with the push for better fuel economy and electrification. I would advise everyone now, if you want something new lease it for 2 years and turn it in.

Even though Toyota has had some issues & problems of late, I am still loyal to the brand as the Toyota Motor Corporation has always stood beside me when I've had an issue & made it right. I had a 2000 Tundra Limited which had a recall with the exhaust manifolds & even though I was well out of the recall's warranty period (in time), I was under the mileage limit for the recall. My dealership went to bat with Toyota & got both manifolds replaced at no charge to me. I'd still be driving the vehicle if some lady hadn't ran a Stop sign right in front of me. Then I bought a low-mileage used 2005 Tacoma truck only to find out later that the frame needed to be replaced due to rust (my bad for not having a pre-inspection done). I had to wait for two years for a class action lawsuit to resolve itself through the courts, but Toyota finally did replace the entire frame on my truck giving me a brand new foundation for a low-mileage powertrain with a body almost in perfect condition. Hence, I now own both a 2015 4Runner Limited (w/54K) & a 2022 Avalon Touring (w/8K). Am very loyal to the Toyota brand but I'd stay away from the new twin-turbo 6 cylinders until they get their act together. I suspect that Toyota will end up repairing or replacing a lot of those engines just as they had to replace the frames on the Tacomas & some early Tundras.
