Over the last 50 years, we've recorded spectacular images from all over the solar system, but sound recordings are few and far between. They do exist, though, and bring us closer to these other worlds than ever before.

My cousin is deaf and he was shocked when he was told that we can’t hear clouds from the ground, and that a starry night sky didn’t have a sound.
I wonder what he thought it would sound like
@@Agaettis I know he had thought things made noise when the sparkled, like if you had flashing lights or glitter, or sunlight hitting something metal, so I think he would have imagined the starry night in a similar way! I don’t know about the clouds though!
@@rachaelfitzpatrick8574 so, like sound effects in the movies (such as Audible Sharpness)

Ay, nice connection! Tolkien was on to something, come to find out! Not too surprising, dude was on another level.
I don't understand why the Soviet Venus missions don't get more attention than they do. For the technology of the time to land on Venus and take pictures and transmit data was a HUGE achievement. Had it happened today it would've been widely publicised.
"The loudest thing, by far, would be the Sun"
So what you're saying is that a gigantic, perpetual thermonuclear explosion is loud?
Me, waiting for the sound of Pluto after Neptune: ....oh
It's just a very faint barking sound...

I love how here in the US we have glossed over the achievements of other countries, particularly Russia, in space.
Excited to hear what Mars sounds like. (Edit: on the planet...)
@@lakshmiwillowrose5112 I meant what it sounds like on Mars. Oops.
@@diyeana haha, no worries!
Ok Melissa
To be fair, the whole point of the space race for the longest time was disregarding what Russia was doing and trying to upstage them at every turn to show that their accomplishments were subpar compared to ours. Bur yeah, now that the Cold War is over, I'd like to see more text books go back and highlight their accomplishments, especially in regards to Venus. They owned exploring that planet.
In Mother Russia achievements gloss over YOU!
I watch a documentary called the sky at night, and there was a astronomer working on analysis star clusters who lost their sight, but was able to convert the images of the clusters and converted them to sound. What's amazing was they were able to make a few discoveries out of it.
I love how almost all the planets sound like some degree of ancient eldritch horror.
If you listen to the full Saturn one, that could score a horror movie
I just wanted you to know that I started my masters in software engineering last week and in my technical writing class my professor had one of your videos linked for material to watch. You produce great content!

Raycons are no joke. Bought a set for myself and the wife based on Joe's recommendation. Almost a year now: batteries still rocking, sound amazing, 100's of miles of biking, HIIT workouts, 1000's of work, even use them as mild ear protection when running equipment like saws -- absolutely love 'em.

Whoa thanks for the mention!, a few weeks ago I got told that I will need a bone conducting hearing aid as my ear drums are finishing their service life lol, its actually super cool since I tried one and it simply works well, that is done with vibrations on the side of my skull which I opted to get a titanium screw as a medium from the hearing aid to my ear. That level of clarity reminds me of the seismic recordings we hear from Mars which must be ridiculously clear for what it does.
that's so sad about your ear drums. what brand of hearing aid do you use? my grandma has tried many different ones.
@@lakshmiwillowrose5112 I don't know yet, I knew they were deteriorating my whole life due to surgeries and was just told a week ago its time to work out the operation to get the titanium screw, I have used siemons heating aids and have found that they are good, so for my bone anchored hearing aid I will try to stick to that brand but im not fussy

Excellent video, as always, Joe!!!! This one gave me chills, in a good way. It was cool to hear the audio from Saturn and Venus! I can't wait for more audio from across our solar system. We're missing out on such a big piece of our "hood" lol
Thanks for covering this. I'm absolutely fascinated by this one, and some years ago I went on a spree trying to find all the space audio I could. Unfortunately some of it is bogus - just heavily slowed recordings of people talking or making dumb sounds. So I'm glad to see a properly researched video on this. I would love to see more of this if possible
EDIT: I went to the video showcasing the sounds of the planets, and, well... if you take the recording of Mercury, speed it up by about 3x and reverse it, you get the sound of some teenager just groaning into their mic. Quite disappointing, seems the BS recordings are still circulating
Great video, Joe. I like the notion that there is music and everything. Now I'm curious what a magnetar sound like! One can only imagine if it is the cosmic equivalent of dubstep🤔

Something about the Uranus and Neptunian EM sounds has also captured me, it just sounds so cold and alien for lack of a better word
Is it April 1st?? I have never once heard of trips to or landing on Venus in my life. My jaw hit the desk.
The sounds actually are ASMR worthy imo.
The bit about the Sun is actually a really interesting and oft forgotten point when it comes to the concept of a Dyson Sphere. Unless you somehow encased the Sun in a transparent material containing a vacuum, it'd be really, really noisy living in one.
I'm pretty sure the concept of the Dyson sphere does not include filling it with an atmosphere...
You're really out here making the best kind of content to consume on youtube. I care about EVERYTHING you talk about no matter how the channel deviates.
I absolutely love when your original southern accent peeps up through your words, like the way you say "Microphone" at 00:32.
It happened in a recent video with the word "type" too, it's really precious. :D
The sounds of space are so interesting. Now we need the smells of space
didn't the austronauts said it smelled like a very faint cooked steak smell? i always thought that was the effect of direct solar radiation on their skins
Astronaut Thomas Jones said it "carries a distinct odor of ozone, a faint acrid smell…a little like gunpowder, sulfurous." Tony Antonelli, another space-walker, said space "definitely has a smell that's different than anything else."
Astronauts coming back from space walks say it smells like ozone and gunpowder, though we're still not entirely sure if that's the smell of space or just an effect from the airlock.
@@winterx2348 Lack of gravity also effects the sense of smell and taste so what are they really smelling??
You'll have to use my smell-o'scope
You missed two 'sounds', one being lightning, a falling whistle and two, much bigger, Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations - which helped form all of existence :-).
Omg! That sonification of the milky way is exactly what i would imagine the universe to sound like! Luv that! I'm going to look out for other space sonifications!
‘Musica universalis is a long time favourite philosophy/art inspiration of mine, and it’s lovely to see it balanced with recordings and songification of the solar system. There’s some really cool artwork inspired by this set of ideas and of course I’d recommend checking out Mike Oldfields Music of the Spheres if you found the Milky Way interpretation all tingly.
There's definitely a music of the universe, on an other note, I now question myself whether I'm a cylon or not.
The solar system is in the library section of the universe " they're just being quiet🤫"
@Joe_Scott I've been watching for years. Your sense of humor (and humor "know-how") is freakin awesome!
2 quick things:
1) You played sound from Mars, where you say no audio has ever been recorded (or did you mean only from something *meant* to record audio? And I think I was somewhere on nasa.gov when I heard a recording of a Mars wind- or sandstorm.
2) You and I might well enjoy talking politics. Voting-wise, we're not close, but we'll do fine if we focus on ideas, AND if we knock back a few beers in the meantime. If you're ever around central Arkansas, give me a shout. Beers are on me.
Joe, I'm glad you got a good dose of beauty after that "worst human experiments" video, I was kind of worried about you. And me. And all of us.
“There’s music in the solar system”

That moment when the universe is more musically talented then you
Your pfp make it better
Lol technically every piece of music ever was produced by the universe.
If you think about it our universe is so large that a specific pattern of stars could be playing Never Gonna Give You Up!
It’s had a lot of practice
But you ARE the universe. You are of it not just in it
That fact that the question I had in my head from reading the title was immediately answered thank you joe❤

Hey Joe, lovely video as always, I really liked the poetic part at the end, that we're so moved by music because we're made out of it. Just out of curiosity, do you like metal music? I'm into black metal myself, so it would be pretty nice to hear about your music taste. Maybe you can make a video on your other channel? Or share a Playlist on Spotify?

My Raycon review: I've had the E50 model (discontinued) for about 2 years now and I would give an overall positive review. I regularly get 8hr run times, with sielent idle periods. Charging is fast. They fit well and stay in place. They aren't perfect, I feel the sound is tuned very bass heavy, so sometimes voice calls can sound muffled. The mic isn't very good, so I use my hand as a reflector when on a call. And, the Bluetooth can be finnicky, ~80% success rate, requiring the reboot of my phone (Galaxy S9) or the buds to reconnect. But, compared to $30 ones that break in 2 months, or $200 name braded ones with the same features, I think they have good value.
Thank you very much Joe, I'm 37 and I've been wondering about this since I was a kid. thank you, good video.
I learn something new every time I click on one of Joe's videos. It makes me want to pretend I'm smart the next day.
That we appreciate music and harmony because it is already created naturally by phenomenon well beyond our grasp.

What a cool video! I'd never thought about sounds in space! Nor did I know we've had so many successful landings on other planets! Venus?! Who knew?
I'm only surprised because usually I come into science-ed videos horribly jaded - "Yeah I've heard this before", or finding them horribly obtuse, like PBS Spacetime - bless them - sometimes is with their quantum "explanations". This was a rare mix of genuinely informative and accessible!
Anyway, I'll shut up now.

We have cells touching down everywhere in adelaide south Australia. For 3 nights I hear fire crackers, the roar of jets, then a high ringing & sounds of trumpets then, all traffic noise is blocked for 10 to 15 minutes.

I enjoy recording nature at about 384000 samples per second and playing it back slowed down so ultrasound is audible. I got fair results with the Cirrus Audio card on a Raspberry Pi. A cellphone with digital microphone might work. My best results so far were with a Knowles Sisonic PDM microphone with a 5MHz clock, but I had to make my own circuit board and driver to get that to work. To varying degrees, just slowing down the playback opens a world of sounds we are normally deaf to. I can listen to bats, flying squirrels nesting in my ceiling, various rodents. Even regular bird song often extends into the ultrasonic range, and slowed down, what might sound like a boring chirp will turn out to be dozens of notes sung very quickly. There are also a lot of mystery sounds which I haven't identified. Infrasound is also interesting, just play back at a higher speed than recording. Sound cards vary in the ability to turn off various filters, and you might have to operate on an old card to bypass soldered on filters. Most microphones don't perform at their best outside of human hearing range, but most will at least kind of work.
I am in love with the idea that the universe makes music that slaps
