UPDATE: Since we wrote and animated this video, the rebels have made more progress into Aleppo, and a withdrawal by Assad/government forces looks pretty much inevitable. As we suggested at the end of this video, however, more violence now looks likely: Assad has responded by bombarding civilian areas in Idlib, and Kurdish forces are apparently entering Aleppo's eastern neighbourhoods, setting the stage for further fighting between the Islamist rebels and Kurdish forces.

      1. It is _technically_ a civil war, @@nightprowler6336
So actually, any anti-government is called rebel.
      2. It seems like a trend for governments to label their enemies as "terrorists", even when the government itself is just that.

What intrigues me is how this will impact the Russo-Ukrainian war. Russia invested a lot of money (at the request of Assad) to protect Assad in order to protect their vital naval facility in Tartus. Now that Russia is stuck in a stalemate with Ukraine, Russia will have less resources to protect their interests in Syria. They'll either have to abandon Assad, or invest their Ukrainian resources into Syria.

@@Dorgpoop I don't think that's a fair equivalence. Armenia (and by extension the CSTO) has little strategic value to Russia, since it's pretty clear that Russia may plan to retake the former Soviet states to incorporate them into Russia.
The Tartus naval facility, however, is very important to Russia from a strategic perspective , as it's the only naval facility that connects the Russia Navy to the Mediterranean Sea.

Frankly, I think this is as decent a summary as possible in only 8 minutes. The only point I would add is that large portions of the HTS coalition are either Islamist or even Salafi (but mostly not Salafi-Jihadist - except for the Al-Qaeda offshoot which is a part of HTS, but also hostile to ISIS). This is another reason why the US does not back HTS, but Türkiye does (not that Türkiye supports Al-Qaeda, but they do consider them less bad than the Kurdish PKK; also the more moderately Islamist ideology of other components of the coalition probably suits Erdoğan).

      Well two things
First, this is the true ability of the syrian army without the iranian support on the ground and the russian aerial support
Second, the rebels HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH isis .. they fought isis in the past plus they are pretty much welcomed in the city in contrary to isis ..
most of these fighters are aleppines who were kicked out in 2016 by assad vicious campaign back then and they are just returning to their city and homes .. and that's why they are welcomed by the people

I am surprised you didn't even mention it, or at least mention that the areas controlled by the Kurds also have the majority of oil fields in Syria.
Both the US and their puppet Kurds have contributed hugely to the suffering of the Syrian people, by stealing the oil and making the majority of the Syrian people live without basic human essentials and rights like electricity, gas, fuel.. etc.
The best bet for the Syrian people(in my opinion as a SYRIAN myself) is for the Rebels to win, and for Syrians to kick out all foreign countries, and maybe pay some debt to Turkey by eliminating the threat of an independent Kurdish state stealing all of the oil and pumping a lot of it to the US.
