Glory to God for all things ☦️ I was Baptized and Christmated to Orthodoxy shortly after birth. The Antiochian Church that I attended most of my life never had Vespers, Matins, prayer ropes and Jesus prayer, teachings on fasting, how to receive blessings from a priest's right hand, fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays and no women wearing a headscarf in sight. A recent convert friend of mine (1979) took me to a Monastery in Northern California and introduced me to the Holy Fathers of St. Herman of Alaska. After meeting them and observing a true Orthodox practice of services and way of life, I was deeply moved spiritually. I inquired about the difference of this kind of Orthodoxy compared to the one I never knew in practice? He told me of the monastic fathers that were part of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia and to name a few: Archbishop John of San Francisco, Archbishop Averky of Holy Trinity Monastery Jordanville New York, Bishop Necktary of Seattle, Metro. Philaret and Fr. Spyridon, the clairvoyant one. I was so inspired! Later to discover that the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery (Platina, NorCal), printed books in English and were extremely warm and loving to pilgrims, no matter what sinful baggage they brought to Platina. I was and still am extremely appreciative with all my heart of what the Russian Church Outside Russia had brought to America: monastic life, Orthodox tradition, saints, lives of saints and services, etc. Truly, what did we have in America at that time other than what they offered?! I clearly remember while attending my first "Summer Pilgrimage" of talks given to us by Fr. Seraphim Rose. I was sitting in the back towards the right and a young man raises his hand of the Russian Church and basically insist on telling Fr. Seraphim how sinful the Church of Antioch is and how they're bound up with Antichrist. Fr. Seraphim immediately looks over to me with great compassion and the feeling of awkwardness. He tells the young man to be quiet and he's mistaken, but the young man is persistent on making it clear that the Antiochian Church is bound up with the devil. As Fr. Seraphim is answering this Pilgrim with now a strong tone, he continues to stare at me most likely praying I don't get up and leave. I clearly remember Father Herman begging for forgiveness on behalf of what had taken place. But it was at that moment when I had realized there's a whole world of people practicing a deep Orthodox life and realizing there are those who never heard of such a life in Orthodoxy. I strongly believe from that moment, Fr Seraphim and Abbot Herman's view began to change. My heart dropped and never heard such politics against one another as far as a juristictional difference. I never knew of such competition- our jurisdiction is better than your "jurisdiction mentality" and we have more saints than you will ever have.. but I thought we were all Orthodox and family in Christ. There's no separation as there will not be in heaven. This cold-separation hurt me and for the first time.. I received counseling, Holy Confession and Holy Communion by them. They both welcomed me with such love and kindness and without a sales pitch to join rocor. It was right then when Fr. Seraphim told Fr. Herman that Brother Paul will be our brother in the world and he and his few friends will never leave us. We became an Orthodox family without any jurisdiction-and there were thousands of us..! Fr. Seraphim said for example, jurisdiction's were only good for one who refused to be forced into accepting the bowing down to ecumenism, but can leave and join another one to freely practice Orthodox tradition. Father Herman said they were man-made and how they label one in a box then become distant from one another. I will leave with this: Abbott Herman and Fr. Seraphim were the two missionaries that made America Orthodox of their time and.. out of love for Jesus Christ, they extended as best they could orthodoxy to the suffering searching soul as best they could. With love in XC, Unworthy Priest Paul Baba

I am being baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church because Saint Ephraim's book Councils of the Holy Mountain was my introduction into Orthodox Christianity and I could feel the Grace and Spirit coming off the pages of his book , then became a Catechumen of a Greek Orthodox Monk , who came from Mount Athos, and I know there are political issues in the Eastern Orthodox Church, but for me this about becoming closer to God within me and the Holy Spirit led me to the Greek Orthodox Monastery and I believe Jesus hates division in his body , and so I stay obedient to my Spiritual Father, I pray for peace between the churches , to heal the schisms, I love All Eastern Orthodox Christians and pray for us all to be One Body in Christ Jesus. As someone whos been recieved into the Antiochian Archdiocese, and coincidentally has a ROCOR parish exactly the same distance from my home as the Antiochian parish, Ive seen a sad tendency among a few (but let it be known, not all, and not many) among the rocor that see themselves as the "better" or "more holy" church than us at the antiochian one (despite having only been there once or twice, seeing pews, and immediately casting us aside as being bound with antichrist)
Now, notice that this is an opinion among the laity, but the beloved priests stationed at the Antiochian parish and the wonderful priest ive met at the rocor parish have no such opinions about eachother, "while we have different playbooks, we play for the same team" (from rocor) and, with an unserious tone, "we celebrate a feast on a different day and so they call us heretics, this is a joke of course, we are on the same team as them and that is final" (from antioch)
In my experience, the priests ive met are holier than any layperson aspousing this "us vs them" mentality in either jurisdiction, let this show who Christ sees it fit to bestow His grace on, not those who seek division, but instead community
I still alternate parishes every now and then, and both sets of priests are aware of this, i have close friends living great lives in Christ at both these places, and it truly is the same Christ which acts upon these same people, and resides in the Eucharist, perfectly and undivided, in both chalices, eternally.

Glory to God! He keeps sending us answers when we really need it. While I am an advocate for Baptism, God accepts those only Chrismated. This pressure that My Athos, and some book publishers are putting out there to be baptised is mostly aimed at the Bishops, priests and Church as a whole to start thinking in a more Orthodox way. If anyone is in doubt that their Chrismation is not enough, they should actually go listen to what Fr Peter Heers says. He is one of the biggest proponents of baptism for all, but he even says that Chrismation (blessed by the local bishop) is valid and has grace and has saints who came into the Church this way. He is not publishing his books to go and get everyone to be rebaptised. If we really want to be baptized (as I support), we can bring this up to our priest first. But the obedience is the most important thing for those coming into the faith and if the Bishop says to be Chrismated, than that is probably best and pleasing to God!
My own opinion: We don’t know how God works. We see the physical world, we don’t see the spiritual with our sinfulness. God works in many and mysterious ways.

The newly exiled Russians, fleeing the Bolsheviks, in what was becoming ROCOR, attended the Orthodox Congress where the calendar was discussed. They had no problem with the new calendar, but stated if they went with it, they would be seen as in bed with the Bolshevik government like the Renovationist Russian Orthodox Church that had already gone to a similar "new" calendar. The main reasoning of not going new calendar was a practical one to not be mistaken for Renovationist Orthodox.

He never told them “Oh you should just go back and be with the new calendar church”. He went to the OC Cathedral in NYC. There were OC bishops invited to his glorification in the 1990s.

I think this calendar issue is neutral.
Fast on Wednesdays and Fridays, divine liturgy on Sundays, saints days on the days that follow from that. Old, new... Does God tell us when to figure time, or is it all man made thing and it's all wrong anyway?

"Was the adjustment done to square the calendar or what?" No. The adjustment was not done with any sort of adjustment to make the calendar more accurate. The only reason whatsoever was to have some attempt at a unity in calendar with the Papist Church. Which is why so many in The Church rejected the calendar change when it first happened, not because they were obsessed with calendars, but because the recognized the ecumenist motives behind the change. The revised calendar butchers a lot of our fasting periods as well, so in that way is certainly affects us spiritually. It was a big error on the part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate who first encouraged it. It has been the cause of a massive schism.

I think it's a big temptation to exert so much effort bashing Orthodox Christians who are simply following their saints while staying silent about Patriarchs and Bishops who ordain "female deacons" and march towards communion with Rome whilst preaching many heresies. It seems undiscerning.

      This attitude is extremely unhelpful.
This video is not meant to present a complete picture of Fr. Seraphim's views on jurisdictions, Old Calendarists and New Calendarists, who is Orthodox and who is pseudo-Orthodox, etc. To my knowledge, no single source provides a complete view of what Fr. Seraphim thought about these matters, both those views he held through his entire life and those that were modified later in his life. An article like this is much needed.
This video is meant to show how St. John and Fr. Seraphim guided one young man and also what Fr. Seraphim himself said in a letter toward the end of his life about communing New Calendarists and supporting "all the Orthodox", such as those like Fr. Paul. We need more balance and completeness when discussing the views of Fr. Seraphim and how to apply them.

If I have one prayer for Orthodoxy, it would be that you ALL come to the Lord Jesus Christ and stop fighting amongst yourselves over silly nonsense. If you disagree on a point, then agree to disagree, but for the love of the Lord, STOP fighting!!! There is only one God, one Son and one Holy Spirit in all through all and over all. Stop this nonsense!

What do you mean "come to the Lord Jesus Christ?" How does disagreement between jurisdictions translate to not having Christ? And since you seem to be a Protestant....that's rather hypocritical as they have thousands of denominations worldwide with crazy variances in doctrine. The Orthodox Church has stood for 2000 years on record - YOU be the one to take the common sense step to return to that which Christ established by his Apostles.

The only way to FULLY come to Jesus Christ is to be joined to His Church, which is The Orthodox Church. I understand that you may view these as hair-splitting issues, but they are not. The Church has always had authority and a visible ecclesiology, with strict guidelines to follow by. This change in The Calendar not only affected Orthodox Christians by butchering our yearly fasting periods, but was also a clear-cut attempt at having some sort of unity with Rome. That is Ecumenism, and Ecumenism is Heresy, it is not welcome in The Church. All of The Saints are in agreement on that. I think that you would understand the severity of the issue more if you were Orthodox. I agree that it is a big tragedy that many of these controversies happen, but the solution is not to just "stop fighting", over them, we must always FIGHT as hard as we possibly can, to keep The Orthodox Faith as it is and as it has always been. The true tragedy comes only from those who try to push these innovations onto The Church.

If you were with the Lord Jesus Christ, He would be first in your thinking, your lives, and your actions. He would not be taking a backseat. In fact, humility, love, and kindness would be found in all, including you. It amazes me how you can fight amongst each other, without even a single thought, how He hurts because of it.
