I have spent nearly 7 yrs in an outpatient sports medicine physical therapy clinic as an exercise instructor. This guy is a class act, highly recommended.
Hello John, great video. I saw a physio regarding an outwards tracking patella. He told me to do the same thing that you've mentioned in this video - to tape it towards the medial side. However, I forgot to ask him, so I'm asking you, is this taping method supposed to naturally and permanently keep the patella in the correct position, and if so, how long would it take using this taping method? Thanks
Once the tape is in place then leave on for 3-5 days and take it off for a day and reapply - you will also need to do some exercises for the Vastus Medialis muscle to help support the patella, regards JG
Hi John quick question, if the patella is tracking laterally, why start the last piece of tape anchor on the lateral side instead of the medial side? Wouldn't the recoil of the tape pull the patella laterally in that case? Would it help more to put it medial so the direction of recoil was in the medial direction?
Grade 1 is not much an issue and most anterior knee pain is not caused directly as an issue from the knee so typically is caused by the position of the foot or there is an issue with the pelvis or weak Glutei. Taping helps but only to reduce some of the pain. regards JG
Simple: strength training. Do things like squats, if you feel pain, use protective angles for the patelofemoral joint. What is the angle? Squat until you get 45 degrees of knee flexion. If you feel ok, try it harder, increasing the range of motion, until 60 degrees. Slightly increase the range of motion and the weight week by week.
If you gonna do leg extension, the protective angle is diferente. Start fron 90 degrees of knee flexion, and go until you get 45 degress. As we do in the squat, slightly increase the range of motion and the weight. Pay attention, if you feel pain, decrease the weight or stay at the most protective angle: 90 to 45 degrees.
Is it normal for the kneecap to tilt inside instead of to the outside? How would you treat a patient like this? If you ever had a orient whose kneecap shifts inside instead of out I would like to know how they solve the issue
Its not normal for the patella to shift medially or laterally and this is the issue when trying to correct the problem as can be many reasons - if you only look at the patella and only apply tape, with nothing else then it doesn't fix anything - using tape might reduce some of the symptoms and then you might look at strengthening certain muscle groups, regards JG
Had a patellar dislocation twice in my left knee with the first being a year back and the last being three months back. On both occasions, calf twisted on the inside and patella popped out on the inside (VMO side) and popped back in within like two seconds, more like a partial dislocation. Consulted an ortho and got an MRI, he recommended physio as there was patellar instability due to the VMO being quite underdeveloped (not as strong; muscle wasn’t as conspicuous as the VMO on my right normal knee). Started PT but temporarily stopped PT as the physiotherapist I was seeing wasn’t exactly treating my problem. I have been doing a few exercises to strengthen the inner quads though. I want to start taping, will KT elastic tape or something like Leukotape be better to improve patellar tracking. Also, I would be seeing another PT soon but want to get some idea ahead.
I have a video on Leukotape as the technique was designed by McConnell so have a look at that as is more effective at controlling the position of the patella, then you can strengthen the VMO with tape in situ. regards JG
I have suffered from many patella subluxations in the past from playing football. I have been told by surgeon that I have very shallow groves in my knees. Will this method of taping help keep the kneecap in the groove?? If not is there other methods you suggest. I have also noticed I'm getting pain in the top of my calf just under back of knee when squatting. Hoping it also helps with this. Thanks
Anything is possible, but doubt it is the fault of just the VMO as the patella has to accommodate the position of the foot, ankle, tibia, femur, hip, pelvis so a lot of structural issues can change its position as well as muscle imbalances. regards JG
Hi John, I've a client who has just been told his broken his patella but had the accident over 9 weeks ago, don't have full details till Friday but his struggle with his ankle and back as well. Any suggestions please to help him out? Looking at some exercises, leg raises, massage to quads but would you suggest some taping please. Thanks Aliki
Thank I do have your book anyhow but just wanted to be sure. Didn't do any taping but did massage this time round and he felt like it could go dancing once finished. I advised him not too. 🤣 Thanks
My son is a high school senior wrestler. He sprained annkle and kindda hurt knee last week wrestling. He does not want to take a break and still going to practice. Ankle is a little puffy, just a little bit though. Knee not swollen but is unconformable. Anyways he can use tape and use compression sleeves at the same time? If tape comes off when taking a shower can he just use compression sleeves during the whole day to reduce swelling?
Hello John, I have the same problem PFPS but it's because my feet are flat and also i lift heavy weights. So i'm wondering if the tape is good in my situation ?? And when can i retrain again ??
Try a simple orthotic off the shelf and see if it helps the knee as they can be miraculous - if it does then you will at some point visit a Podiatrist for an examination as these are the best therapists to see if a biomechanics issue. The tape will also help but short term - regards JG
I suffer from pain in my patella from dance injuries I was told to strengthen my knees but it’s too painful to do the exercises. I have severe hyper extension go my knees go in all the time that as simple as standing and I can injure it. Probably should start taping my knees again?
I have PFPS and my kneecap goes inwards instead of outwards. I have been to a physiotherapist and gotten exercises that strengthen the muscles around it. It’s helped a lot, but I was thinking about trying to tape it for days when it hurts more, do you think the method in the video would work? Should I apply the last tape the opposite direction since the kneecap goes opposite?:) Btw, I suffer from PFPS because my feet are pointing just a bit outwards when I walk and move... I try to be aware while walking, but some days are just worse. I am very active and also ride horses! My work is also very active!
so i may have over developed my Quads throughout the years, if i'm not mistaken this is pulling my kneecap upwards towards my Femur, if i where to use KT tapes would i need to pull my kneecap downwards?? (i've noticed most instructional videos seem to pull the kneecap upwards towards the femur and i wonder if in my particular case pulling towards the Kneecap would cause more pain or am i misunderstanding the taping process.) im just researching for insight for a potential better understanding, i appreciate any guidance. Thank You for reading. Look forward to reading back from You.
Hard to comment without looking at you, the KT tape will not change the position of the patella due to the amount of stretch that is possible (180%), the tape will help support and potentially reduce some symptoms. Regards JG
I have patella erosion in my left knee and also get achilles tendonitis in the left ankle. Is it okay to strap both of these using k-tape at the same time when I know am going to be on my feet for a long time? I am doing the exercises prescribed and feel as if require extra support at times.
My kneecap goes inward instead of outward. I’ve been doing pt for 2 months and my legs are stronger yet my kneecap still can’t stay in the middle. What do I do? Do I strengthen my cast is lateralis or do I try taping?

It’s really difficult to see exactly where you are apply the tape when you have the knee at 90 degrees.

Wouldn't the recoil of the tape pull the patella laterally in that case? Would it help more to put it medial so the direction of recoil was in the medial direction?
I take out most of the stretch in the tape so it will stabilise the patella and works well, regards JG
