    Yes there's a bassist. He's seen from the very beginning until the end. Two guitarists, bassist and drummer. And hell-of-a-lot backing tracks.

    First off, Finnish vocals are a special breed of needing to get use to them. They are often more like a battle cry/scream as opposed to a low growl or a more standard mid-range scream like in the chorus of To The Hellfire before he goes super low. That being said, Jari's particular brand of battle cry is sort of one-note, and I agree that his singing voice out shines his harsh voice, but his harsh voice still fulfills its purpose more than adequately. It's about the balance of dynamics. I don't think this song would be anywhere near as good without those harsh sections to balance out the cleaner sections. Harsh vocals also allow for more lead lines to be played on other instruments because the vocals are staying in one frequency area. This isn't a necessary for more lead lines, even in metal as dense as this, just an added bonus.
    Second, bass guitar and metal. It's very common in metal for the bassist to play the bass as if it were a regular guitar due to the high tempos and amount of tremolo picking involved. Tremolo picking is where the player plays on one string with both up and down strokes. Perfect example is in this video when you thought Jari was playing on two strings at 5:30. He's just playing one note on one string, tremolo picking. For bassists, the style of play is a sound and preference thing, as finger picking, slap bass, and using a plectrum (guitar pick) all sound different.
    Thirdly, there are over 1600 backing tracks for this song. So there are lots of things going on in the computer and everyone has to stay perfectly in time or else everything is FUCKED.
    And fourth, some clarifying points to correct your vocabulary and understanding. At 10:00 when you ask if the tempo is increasing, what actually happened is, after that "break down" section that happened just prior to that, everything is being played with 16th note timing for the drums, after the drum fill and the steady beat comes back in, the time switches from 16th notes to a triplet feel. The tempo doesn't actually change, but there are more notes per measure and the snare drum is hitting on every beat. Now, towards the end of the song when you were speaking of how the guitar was rising one string or chord at a time, this is not what is happening. The chords actually stop progressing at that point and we are left sitting in one chord while the guitar is just rising one note at a time through the scale of that chord before it finally resolves with the grand finale.
    Special bonus, Jari, the main vocalist and composer, is missing about 1/4th of one of his lungs due to tuberculosis. If you want to do another Wintersun song that's arguably better and showcases Jari's clean vocals much more, check Time from the same rehearsal, don't listen to the people that tell you to do loneliness. That song is the last song on a concept record and listening to it kind of ruins the album experience.

    It's really difficult to nail Wintersun down to a single genre. Their sound is definitely a mixture of popular European subgenres like Power Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Folk Metal, etc. but they do have Progressive Metal elements as well. So don't feel bad about not knowing the exact genre.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin Год назад

      Based on their past affiliations I'd add symphonic black metal to the list, but you are right, you cannot easily put them into any single genre.
      But the music is composed like a movie score with orchestral elements in it, according to people who compose things like that, so it's more of a piece of music than a song with a single genre.

    Death and the healing is amazing, and my favorite is loneliness (winter), both by wintersun
    Children of bodom - follow the reaper is a great song if you’re down for amazing solos. They’re also Finnish melodic death metal like wintersun. Love the reactions by the way, found you from a Lorna shore search.
    This genre is melodic death metal, but these Finnish bands are a mix of death, power, progressive and symphonic black metal. It’s known for crazy musician ship and harsh vocals mainly. When wintersun records jari (singer) does the keyboard stuff

    The lead singer, Jari, lost part of a lung to tuberculosis. Yeah, he can still sustain those belts with like 70% of the lung capacity that he used to have.
    I like his distorted vocals. I think it's just an extreme version of a fry scream, but I could be wrong about that. My criteria for that type of vocal is can I still understand the lyrics? If so, I'm fine with it, and he does quite well in that regard I think. His clean vocals are really good too though. I was kinda meh about him at first but the more songs I listened to he grew on me.
    The drummer, Kai, is world class. He's a machine. I think the part where you asked if the tempo was increasing, it actually wasn't. But they were playing around with the time signature, or just syncopating the rhythm so that it has this really forward driving feel to it. Makes you think it's accelerating when it isn't.
    Both the drummer (Kai) and the bassist (Jukka) are currently with Nightwish.

    I’d consider this album to be more of a mix of melodic death metal (melodeath) and symphonic metal. The first album was closer to pure melodeath, and the last album was sort of a mix of symphonic, folk, and black metal.

    Wintersun is one of those bands who mix different styles of music into their sound.
    So, in short - you can't really put Wintersun in a specific category, since they incorporate so many different styles. Folk, technical death metal, black metal, power metal, symphonic...
    The vocalist (Jari ) was before in a band called Ensiferum, which is in the ball park of folk metal - but has also done black metal and other styles of extreme metal. His vocal style (the raspy highs) is very typical in black metal, but like you said - he has incredible range and everything he does, is intentional. He composes all the songs of the band.
    The other guitarist (Teemu) was in a band called Imperanon, which was melodic death metal.
    The bassist (Jukka) was in a band called Norther, which also was melodic death metal. Now he is playing in Nightwish with the drummer (Kai).
    These guys were part of the finnish metal scene in the late 90's - early 00's, and all these members have connections to bands and people that went onto do big stuff around the world. All seasoned professionals and musicians at a level that I think very few people can ever tackle. And probably can't because how much they left a mark in modern metal music we hear today.

    One reason you noted him sounding so good is about ability to add effects to his voice.
    High caliber singers have large toolbox of various effects they can add when needed, for example making the cleans sound more full and broad.

    I forgot to mention that "progressive" doesn't mean any specific kind of sound. All progressive means when speaking of musical genres is that it doesn't follow standard song structures like, for example, intro verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus chorus.
    There is progressive music in any genre. Also, you were right to feel like you were on a heroes journey as I feel that's what this song represents, also also, this song is technically in 4 parts.

    Wintersun falls under a ton of genres. It can be Progressive, Symphonic, Death, Black, Folk or whatever permutation of those words or even maybe add some other genres. I'd classify this song as all of the 5 subgenre's of music that I've stated.

  • @MetalZoned
    @MetalZoned Год назад

    Their bass player and drummer are also now in Nightwish. The guy you said is that a bass? Yes it's a bass. Appreciate that you recognize your own limits and ask for more info. A 5 string bass is usually tuned with a low B on the lowest string, similarly to a 7 string guitar which they are using. The rasp from Jari is intentional. It's common in black and death metal. To see a good example of someone switching between raspy and guttural check out anything from The Black Dahlia Murder's singer Trevor (RIP).

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin Год назад

    The reason the bass playing seems weird is partially because in many genres basists and music itself are less versatile.
    And as bass strings are damn thick, it's also some good effort to change chords at that pace.
    If you want to see bass playing pretty much like a guitar, check Jinjer. (Pisces live session is the usual starting point)
