I’m not a licensed cosmetologist but I have many different experiences experimenting on hair. Please know that if you’re wanting to go blonde it will take several sessions and will not be able to be done to your dream hair unless you’re willing to take some major damage (which isn’t recommended). I had a mixture of virgin hair, box color dye hair and completely damaged tips. I knew my roots and tips would lighten faster so I dyed the middle part first which was the hardest because that was trying to lighten over box dye. I left the dye in for 25 minutes while checking on it time to time. Eventually I was able to dye my whole head. I’ve dyed my own and friends hair multiple times and it has always been a success. But that isn’t the same story for everyone. Before dyeing your hair make sure you know what you want and if you’re getting it professionally done, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT.
Edit: Guys, I had no clue this would blow up the way that it did. I really recorded this video just for fun and it actually blew up because of the pandemic and everyone trying to highlight their own hair at home. If you have any questions please ask

I also split my hair down the middle before putting the cap on, sowwies for not putting that in the video 🤗
How much developer did you use ?
Jalisa Bravo honestly I just eyed it and made sure it was creamy enough. I would say around twice the amount of bleach you use
I literally want my hair color just like yours, also I have dark black hair just like yours before ,I went to Sally bought some ,but the sales recommended me to get a 1lb of bleach ,a 32 fl.oz of 40 volume developer twoT18 toner ,two 20 volume of developer, I think they are too much ,what do you think, and how much did you use for your hair ? Because I don't have any experience on DIY highlights, also I got the cap. And only these literally over $50
Catherine Chan that’s a lot of product.. idk why she was recommending you to buy so much but how long is your hair and is it virgin hair?
@@qianyuchen1529 I think you could've used 20 or 30 volume developer and that 40 is really strong for ur hair. U arent trying to dye it platinum blonde so i think you shouldnt use 40 volume. Stick with 20 if your hair is virgin, 30 if it is already dyed. The sales associate was just trying to sell you more stuff for no reason.
I love how she made it quick and got it over with and didnt take like 2hrs like other youtubers
Nachyy Quinones yes I can’t thank her enough for that
Lol I hate videos like that too like just get to the point already 😂
My thoughts exactly...
A helpful tip in case you use a highlighting cap again you’re supposed to put your hair under water with the cap on and it’ll slide right off so you don’t pull your hair
ty marie but then it won’t be satisfying anymore ):
when i rinse the dye of do i keep the cap on?
Are you talking about the toner or lightener ?
@@moonxliqhts2505 yeh exactly when I wash the dye off. Do we need to take the cap/hat off. Or keep it on.
@@soniafarooq29 keep it on the whole time after color toner can even condition w on so it slides off easily..your hair is very delicate so you don't want to pull
Do I dare? Lol salons are closed and well I’m bored.
Annie Honeybee same lol
Do not do it girl 😂
Go for it!!!!
lmao girl im so tempted!
Girl me too! I’m popping down to my drugstore later today and getting this!
FINALLY A PERSON THAT KEEPS THE CAP ONNNN
It turned out beautiful!! I want to do highlights on myself and this inspired me, I'm definitely going to get that toner!
Your hair came out beautifully, good job! I can’t wait to try on my hair. Thank you!
Can’t afford to go to the salon so it looks like I’m gonna be following this video. 💖😂
I can feel my eyes burning thru this video let’s just say I’ve been there
Totally did this. Mom helped me... andddd I now have full blonde hair when My natural hair is brunette 😂 it still looks great, very natural looking, but the mistake was for sure my mom using the whole tub of bleach and we utilized every hole in the cap. My hair isn’t thick so it turned my whole hair blonde basically. Time to adjust 😂
I’m so sorry 🥺🥺 how much hair were you pulling through the holes??
Sweetheart “ALWAYS RINSE YOUR HAIR BEFORE TAKING OFF THE FROSTING CAP” even if it’s just with water, it’s so much better for your hair because without rinsing you could pull half of your hair out by knots & tangles that hurt.
I love when you take the cap off LOL… the best. Thank you for this video ❤️
Wow you even looked awesome amd beautiful with orange brassy hair. You reminded me of like a cool pretty punk rock girl when it was orange. But end results beautiful! Awesome vid
Awww you’re so sweet 🥺❤️ thank you 😊
Your hair came out so pretty ! 🥺 I want to attempt to do this ! ✨
Thank you! I'm gonna try this! I've been looking for a cap highlight tutorial for dark hair. Love how ash the shade is after
Okay that cane out great ! I want to color my own CURLY hair !!! I think I will soon 💜💕💜💕💜💕💜💕💕💕
wow! really pretty, i want to try this myself
I love how you made it. You're so cuuute btw ❤
can you do a tutorial on how you did your hair at the end. The curls are so cute
Yes of course!! It’ll be on my page pretty soon
I want this result!! i'm stuck with orange ish hair but i'm going to try the toner you used!! Thanks :)
You’d want to lighten you hair again, the toner won’t do anything to it if it is orange
@@janetpham60 Time to bleach then lol..thanks for letting me know!
@@wafaeletje yea of course or if you don’t want to lighten it again just get a blue based shampoo
We are here for the same reason. WE AREE BOREED!!😂
IT LOOKS SOOO GOOD
You literally deserve more subs 🥰
Aww thank you! We’ll get there 💕
I left mine in for 50 minutes and they came out extremely light. My hair is a dark brown
Shawtieexoticc did they come out orange color looking? Lol just curious
Shawtieexoticc the longer you leave the bleach in the longer it’ll process and make your hair lighter but did you end up liking the end result?
Your hair looks amazing!! Did you notice any significant damage or dryness? I wanna try but I’m scared I’ll screw up my hair 😭
Honestly no because the highlighted sections were so small but if you’re worried about dryness or damaged hair just add some extra oils to your hair after you wash it and/or occasionally do hair masks
@@janetpham60 hey i m tryna decide if i want highlights or a diy ombre not sure i just want a light brown colour wht do i use and go for? I got virgin asian black hairr
You only get that when you over process your hair so just don’t bleach it more then once if it’s already a orange or yellow color
Aena Mustafa depends if you want to use bleach or not
I’m currently doing this and my hair is to my knees idk how I’m gonna take in our by myself 👁👄👁
How did it come out?
claudia leiva i actually really liked it since I have light hair they kinda look natural My arms were really sore but it turned out good
I loveeee it! I have really thick virgin black hair so how would i dye the rest of my hair if it doesn’t all fit into the cap? Also would i have to bleach my hair a couple times to get it like yours or a little lighter?
If you have black virgin hair please get it done at a salon
The cap is meant for some highlights and not all of your hair so if you refer back to @1:09 I plucked some of my hair through the holes and put the rest into a low bun. Honestly, because you have virgin black hair you should be able to get pretty light without having to dye it twice. If you’re unsure how the bleach will take, do a test strand at the bottom of your head and let it sit while checking every once in a while for at least 20 minutes rinse it out and see if you like it the way it is or if you want it lighter then do another round of bleach.
Just subscribed.. I'm impressed😍😍😘😘
Came out so niceeee ! Which brand of lightening bleach did you?
You needed a 30 volume developer that would have made it lighter but it still looks good
When you use the toner or with the bleach?
It turned out really nice👌😍
Elisa beraldo thank you!
looks great, you did an awesome job
Omg im afraid to see when you try to pull your cap😱 fortunately your hair not broken
Rygn lol that would’ve been a disaster
LOOKS CUTE
CEO OF TRUST THE PROCESS
ur such a mood 💯😂
Haha thank you 😂😂
It looks so good!! 😍😍
When you picked hair from the sides did you just grab what was closest to the cap or did you dig down into lower layers
br-bretwoman rock😳😳😳😳😳
hella jesus i‘m in loove 🥰🤲🏼
Hey, I loved how it turned out! Was this your first time dying your hair by yourself ?? I’m trying to die my hair blonde and they blue
No it wasn’t lol I’ve dyed my hair multiple times before
Stunning well done!!! And thank you for sharing
Looks good ~~ what brand of white powder did you use if you don’t mind me asking :)
It’s just the basic white white loser lightener by clairol but any is fine
Wow !! Such an awesome job!!!
it looks so good
Thank you!!
Janet Pham i will try this tomorrow 😭 i went to sally’s today and i got the things you used except 30 volume and the girl that was helping me suggested another toner 😭
Annette Gómez 30 is really strong and I wouldn’t recommend it cause you don’t know the porosity of your own hair. I would rather do 20 and bleach it twice rather than 30 and burn your hair off. Is the toner a color you like?
yes i like it
Annette Gómez well good luck!! And if you need help at all reach out to me on Instagram at j.phvm! I would love to see your results ❤️❤️
Looks great! Did it take a long time?
Not really maybe an hour all together
It turned out sooo pretty!! I know you just fully turned blonde, but how did you maintain the highlights when the roots grew out?
Thank you 😊 and I only had highlights for a month and a half so there wasn’t much of a difference from the root but I know hair stylists will just go in again with the cap and rehighlight
Just a future reference your supposed to wash it off with the cap on in the shower conditioner then remove it it comes off no problem
Lol I knowww 😂😂 I thought this way would be more satisfying
Thank you. Nicely done.
I love it!!
I just had a question did you put all of the lightener and developer in ?
i wanna do this so bad! can you please give me the steps in order? im a first timer and i wanna do the best i can!
Cap on
Pull hairs through
*Use 1 packet of bleach at a time because it oxidizes fast and you don’t want it to lose its magic. If you need more after the 1st packet is done open another. Don’t use 2 right away unless you have someone helping you*
Mix in developer with packet of bleach ( it should be creamy )
Apply on hair from root to tip
Let it process for at least 20 minutes ( feel your hair time to time to see if it feels stringy )
Depending on how light you want the highlights to be you can wash it out and go in with a second round of bleach
When you wash it out wash it with LUKEWARM water, shampoo and conditioner. It has to be lukewarm or else it’ll shock your hair and any dye/bleach after that won’t affect your hair.
Tone your hair: you can just slap this on easy peasy
Wash your hair like normal and you’re done
How to pull the hair strand on the back side? Do you use double mirror or something? I have to highlight by myself since my husband doesn't want to help :(
Aww! Yes I did use 2 mirrors I used a hand mirror and turned my back to my bathroom mirror and looked through the hand mirror to look at the back of my head
Did you part your hair through the middle? 🤔
Yea so no matter which way I flipped it there wouldn’t be any harsh lines
was your hair box dyed black ? i have box dyed black hair with grown out roots but im afraid if i bleach , the colour will turn red but im surprised it wasnt a problem for you ?
I did have black box dye honestly I was just as surprised and it was a couple months with the box dye
@@janetpham60 did you only go through one round of bleaching ?
@@achooo8421 yea I did but if you do come out with the red, try to do another round and add a green base toner so it can neutralize your hair
loved this vid💕 just some questions bc im planning on doing this too but when you put the highlight cap on, did you part your hair in the middle? and did you just rinse off the bleach with the cap still on? and did you tone all of your hair or just the bleached parts? thank uu💗💗
Thank you ☺️ yes I did part it in the middle but you can part it any way you like. Yes and yes for both questions. Once I rinsed off the bleach I just toned the bleached hair
girl.. you funny. your supposed to rinse the bleach off then pull the cap off in the shower.. comes off very easy that way. great job great hair.
like about how much hair did you pull out from the highlighting cap in each circle? lmfao sorry if this is a dumb question
Edith Saldano No it’s not a dumb question!! I honestly can’t give you an exact amount but I did a mixture of sizes so it’s really up to your preference, I just made sure it wasn’t too thick
I really want to do this with everything closed should I do it ?😭 I’m scared
Yuliana Torres why not??? It’s quarantine and the worst that can happen you could just dye your hair back
Janet Pham true true 😂
Hi i hope u answer, but did u color ur hair after u toned it or u just toned it and the results was the clip at the end??
I just toned it and that was the result at the end (:
Hi! I just want to ask about the amount of products you put in every mixtures, thaaanks
Honestly I don’t have an exact measurement. Usually if you’re using scoops it would be 1 part bleach and 2 parts developer but sometimes that doesn’t work out so I just look for a consistency like @1:30
Amazing
Did you part your hair before you put the cap on or just push it all back?
I parted my hair down the middle ☺️
Casually looking for a tutorial video and this one caught my attention and hey look at that my name is janet too 😂 meant to be watched
HI!! what did you wash your hair with after you applied the toner ???
Just shampoo and conditioner 😊
does blow drying it make the color brighter or ???? like im getting weird tips from people saying stuff like if you blow dry it , it’ll come out a brighter color
Not necessarily. Because your hair is wet it’s gonna be darker because of the water but once your hair dries it’ll be lighter because it no longer has water in it
hey for the toner, did you use the whole bottle of 10na? and how much developer do you put with the toner?
Yea I did and I think I just did a 1:1 ration cause it wasn’t a lot of hair
Question question question !!! So before doing the video was your hair already dyed black?
My natural hair color is black (:
We use to do this in 2012 👁👄👁 im to scared to attempt this again😂
Tell me why you look like Sarahnade on RUclips. You guys are literally doppelgangers
did the dye and toner u used come with the cap
I got the silicon cap to do this but I dont know how low to go pulling the hair out because I'm only doing the top of my head.
Honestly I would go from eyebrow to eyebrow and where you would end at the back of your head would be where your head curves
what creme developer should i use if i have virgin black hair?
Any brand is fine but depending on how blonde you want to go stick between 20-30 developer. If you have thick and stronger hair you can use 30 but if it’s thin/fine go with 20. Every 15 minutes make sure you’re checking on your hair so it’s not breaking. If you go with 20 and don’t like the shade you can always go in again with 20 and lighten and tone in the end
hey i have a question! does the cap come with the tool that pulls the hair through?
Yes
Yes ma’am it does 😇
So if it turns orange what do you use? It goes to fast for me
Me watching this while highlighting my hair 😅
Can you link here these product so I don’t buy a wrong one 😩
Everything’s in the description box!
What products did you use to dye hair? If I may ask💕
2 packets of White Powder Lightener
20 Volume Creme Developer
Wella Colorcharm 10NA - 01/10 Light Ash Blonde
Any brand is fine for the developer and lightener
Janet Pham thank you so much I appreciate it!❤️
please reply did you bleach your hair and can i use a hair due bottol inseatd blesch
Yes, I did use bleach and no I personally would not recommend hair dye bottle to achieve this look
How did you wash your hair with the cap on? And where did you purchase the cap?
I just gathered all the hair that I did and put my head upside down and washed it with shampoo. You can purchase the cap at Sally’s or Walmart I believe so
@@janetpham60 Thank you! It looks so good!!!
Hiya how long did you keep the bleach in your hair for? :)
Around 25-30 minutes and checked my hair frequently. If you have virgin hair you might not have to wait as long
I'm doing it. Hey... I'll dye it pink after. Lololo
YES!! I’m so excited I loved having pink hair!!! If you need an easy brand to work with I recommend Artic Fox
@@janetpham60 I heard it fades really quick
EC so cool it does lowkey if you wash your hair everyday (which it isn’t recommended if you have dyed hair) but when I had pink hair I had it for around 4 months before dyeing it a different color
where did you buy the cap? :)
Sally’s
i’m doing this on wednesday, wish me luck
What if you do this and don’t use purple shampoo will it turn into a different color?
Layla Duong no I didn’t use purple shampoo with these highlights, you typically use purple shampoo if the highlights are more blonde
does the brand matter for the volume creme developer ??
Not really
Did you pull your hair through all the holes?
Yea I did 😊
What do you use to curl ur hair ?
I typically just use a hair straightener but I also use the 32 mm wand from L’ange
is your hair is virgin?
No
Were there measurements for the powder and developer or did u just mix them?
Also what brand was the powder lightener?
Typically it’s a 1:2 ratio so the lightener was 1 scoop and 2 scoops for developer but I like a creamier consistency so I added half a scoop more of developer and Clairols Basic White powder lightener
does it matter which 20 developer you use ??
paola hernandez no not really any is fine 😊
Janet Pham ah okay thank youu:) !
what type of toner did you use? 💕
Harriet G Harriet G wellas collorcharm 10NA - 10/01 in Light Ash Blonde
what did u put in your hair so it’s not orange?
Alyssa Burton toner
Alyssa Burton the 10NA toner
😍😍
Why in the world would you use 20 developer on your dark brown to almost black hair? U definitely needed a 30 at the very least. And if your worried about using a high peroxide, like the 30 or 40 all u gotta do is add olaplex. Everything else was good but that 20 develper wont lift a thing or your dark hair.
I used 20 because I had prebleached hair and already had box dye over the bleach. I didn’t want my hair to overprocess and burn off. In school we learn to never ever use 30-40 on already bleached hair
@@janetpham60 so funny you say that because my hair dresser uses 30 on me and sometimes she goes over my already bleached hair. I really dont think its a one size fit all type of thing. If your hair is already damaged and fine it is not recommended. But I have thick hair and use a lot of olaplex products so I think that saves my hair. But yea I understand what your saying. It did come out really nice!
Drea C Drea C so exactly what you said every persons hair is different... would rather be safe than sorry
I thought u r Bretman Rock's sister:'))
Did she just say 'cilaka benar' ?
I’m on my dads it’s my phone now when I’m older I’m dying my hair blonde like her
can i this on top of box dyed hair?
How long ago did you dye your hair ?
@@janetpham60 like a month ago
@@03samiha I wouldn’t recommend to do it
Did you have virgin hair?
No I didn’t, I previously had bleached hair and box dyed hair
