    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Henry (Burt Lancaster) confesses everything to Leona (Barbara Stanwyck) and warns her that she only has three minutes to live.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
When Lucille Fletcher took on the challenge of expanding her classic 30-minute radio suspenser Sorry, Wrong Number into an 89-minute feature film, she opted on the Citizen Kane approach, filling the plotline to the brim with revelatory flashbacks. Barbara Stanwyck stars as bedridden hypochondriac Leona Stevenson, who while trying to make a call from her bedroom telephone gets her wires crossed and inadvertently overhears two men plotting a murder. Anxiously, Leona wades through telephone-company bureaucracy to trace the call, never catching on -- until it's too late -- that the murder being planned is hers. A series of flashbacks details the disintegrating marriage between the wealthy Leona and her weakling husband Henry (Burt Lancaster), and Henry's subsequent disastrous get-rich-quick schemes involving chemist Waldo Evans (Harold Vermilyea) and a surly gangster (William Conrad). It would have been a near-sacrilege to alter the radio play's ironic ending, which fortunately remains intact on film. Sorry Wrong Number was first heard on radio's Suspense series in 1943, with Agnes Moorehead as the harried Mrs. Stevenson (a role she'd repeat several times on radio and on stage). Though disappointed that she wasn't chosen to star in the film version, Moorehead took some satisfaction in the fact that a recording of the original radio program was played constantly on the set to help keep Barbara Stanwyck "in the mood".

This movie is ridiculously underrated. The cinematography is amazing. The way the camera creeps thro the house. The closeups of Stanwyck. The shadows. The score by Franz Waxman. And this final scene always gives me chills no matter how many times i watch it

It actually makes a person feel as if they're the one being killed! The terror on her face, and in her eyes, and then for her to have to feel the sting of Death... it's time-stopping!
Barbara Stanwyck's character gives a perfect performance of a Lady, doomed to die by the instructions given to the Killer, by her own Husband. The Husband is one seriously messed-up dude, but he, at the very last, tries to reverse his course, by giving her instructions on what to do, to save her own life. Unfortunately, those instructions come far too late...and the Killer kills her, as she screams her last.
This is a heart-rending scene, that has such a strong performance, that it makes you feel it through and through.

I remember the first time I saw this movie. I was home sick and watching on TCM I think. By the end of the movie I was practically screaming for Barbara Stanwyck to get out of that bed.

I wish I could have been there to save her. She truly didn't deserve to die like that! I would've killed the killer, and saved her life. Then, I would, legally speaking, gone after that murderous scum of a so-called "Husband", and had him arrested. On the spot!!!

Classic thriller. The B&W lighting and shades intensify the mood. It's dated but still packs suspense: Stanwyck's reaction as her killer's shadow covers her is priceless.

One of the few times I had to yell at the screen for the characters to flee for their lives. Had to share this movie with my nieces and nephews and they loved it. Of course at the beginning they rolled their eyes and laughed, but once the story caught their attention they too enjoyed it till the end. Great story telling and great actors never go out of style.

  • @tadimaggio

This was a near-revolutionary way to end a movie in 1948. While Leona is far from an admirable character, she IS the protagonist (she has hardly been offscreen in the whole film), and to have her be murdered (especially in light of her deathbed conversion into something resembling an actual human being) must have bowled audiences over. It's comparable to Janet Leigh in "Psycho", completely dominating the first third of the film, leading audiences to assume that she's the star, and then getting killed LONG before a star was supposed to. Having your expectations raised, and then violated, is a great way to really give your viewers a punch in the
    gut.

Sheer terror. Saw this when I was little. Was fortunate to experience so many phenomenal films of this era. I'd like to see a new film with an ounce of talent found in films like these

    • @YouTubeallowedmynametobestolen

"I'd like to see a new film with an ounce of talent found in films like these"
Memento, Traffic, There Will be Blood, The Shape of Water, The King's Speech, ... (These include only movies I have seen myself--and even then I am barely scratching the surface.)
Also, most anything with Meryl Streep, Daniel Day Lewis, Alan Rickman, Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Glenn Close, Judi Dench, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks, Frances McDormand, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, ...
Now, you want the interminable list of crap movies and actors from way back when?
The thing is, the stuff that gets carried into the present from the past is mostly stuff that gets carried because it's worth carrying. The crap mostly gets left behind. So we in the present get a skewed perception of how good "everything" was back then compared to now.
      'Taint so.

Lancaster is just as great as Stanwyck in this scene, and his acting challenge is greater: He has to deliver his lines into that phone, without anyone saying anything on the other line. But look at what he does with his eyes! He gets just as desperate as she does. And the most horrible thing of all is that she hears him confess to everything, just seconds before dying.

You can feel the terror that she's going through, right down to your very soul! That poor Lady...she didn't deserve to die! It's enough to make you cry, and scream for justice to be done to her killer, and to her absolute scum of a "Husband", Henry! Since this is a case of murder for hire, I'd put both the Husband, and the Killer, in the Electric Chair, and let 'em fry! I'd electrocute the Killer first, and make the "Husband" watch-Without him being allowed to look away-or even flinch! Then, after they had removed the Killer's body from the Electric Chair, stick that piece of scum called a "Husband" in that very same Electric Chair, wire him up good and proper, throw the switch on him, and watch HIM fry, too!!!!!
As you can tell-I'm a total supporter of the Death Penalty. If you kill somebody intentionally, for any reason, or you hire someone else to commit the murder for you, for ANY reason, you deserve to be put to death, whether it's by Electric Chair, Hanging, The Gas Chamber, Firing Squad, or Lethal Injection... PERIOD!!!!!

I always want to watch this film in a double feature with Hitchcock's Rear Window cuz of how similar the climaxes are. Killer slowly comes up the stairs and the protagonist is terrified because they're disabled and can't do much to defend themselves. Only thing that saves Stewart's character is that he was able to get over to the window and fall to the ground.
    Both masterpieces.

We watched the movie and listened to the Suspense radio in our Drama unit in ELA, which is unfortunately only one week. However, what's memorable is how we acted out the characters by reading the lines while sitting in front of the entire classroom because we couldn't risk taking the test early. I played the lead role of Mrs Stevenson, and although I made a few mistakes, I still poured all of my emotions in the lines! It was so much fun, and the teacher even asked the classroom to applaud me for my insane acting! To be honest, it felt like I won an Oscar in one day! Even in next class they spoke about it! Since the summer months are coming, I'm going to miss those days, and I'll make sure to always recap by watching these clips!

Black and white movies the best

    • @ronaldshank7589
      @ronaldshank7589 2 года назад

Somehow, the Black and White Movies lend a lot more to showing the sheer terror, that someone's experiencing at any given, particular moment. That's whether it's a Drama like this, or a Horror Movie. Case in point:Did you ever see the 1959 Version of the Movie called:"The House on Haunted Hill"? It stars such People as Vincent Price, Richard Long, Carol Ohmart, Carolyn Craig, and others. I love both versions of The House on Haunted Hill, whether it's the 1999 Version, or the afore-mentioned 1959 Version.
They're both very creepy. The only three differences are, that one was done in Black and White (The 1959 Version), no cursing, at least to a wide degree (Again, the 1959 Version), and no Nudity (Yet again, the 1959 Version). Oops! I almost forgot:There are, indeed, some differences to the storylines, but it still tells the same story...at least, to a rather sizeable degree.
Yep-Gotta admit it:I actually prefer the 1959 Version of this movie.
      Period!

It was the golden age of cinema. Actors had to speak louder because of the limitations of sound recording technology back then.
It's not over-acted at all. You just need to read more about the history of cinema.
They did not have post-production re-recording of dialogue back then. Everything was captured on set.

She wanted him to be at her side 24/7. And to do only what she demanded. She did not want him near anyone but her. When he finally knew this, he just wanted her out of the way.
