    I served in the Army during this time. I was 19. My cousin was stationed at the airport were the Rangers were stationed. He was a postal clerk for the army. When the convoy came in he volunteered and fought alongside the cooks and rangers. He was shot in the hand. I will never forget this.

    The narrator didn't mention that Air Force Special Tactics Squadron combat controller and pararescue airmen and five men of SEAL Team 6's Gold Squadron were attached to Task Force Ranger as well. The Pararescuemen were assigned to the Combat Search And Rescue helicopter, Super 6-8, with Delta medics and one Combat Controller. The three other Combat Controllers were split between the Delta assault element, the convoy (Dan Schilling was riding with the SEALs in a Humvee with no doors or roof) and one of the Ranger chalks.

      @John Wray would probably feel better if his roll was done better. The actor looked nothing like him, not even a little. And in an attempt to portray his mischievous sense of humor they made him seem kinda dumb. The whole family dislikes its. My grandparents walked outta the premier early.

      @@ncsquatch2514 Yeah, I can see where you're coming from with the scene where he's mocking the commander and getting told off. I can see why your family would see it as him being made to be the "class clown" of the squad. With the military advising it, I just assumed they would make things accurate as possible in honor of his sacrifice.

      @TheMajorActual Год назад +2

      @@dylanlevy2107 There's the definition of "seriously": I never saw an armored Humvee at any time in the 80's or early-90's, and even if I had found a reference for an up-armor kit, I would never have been allowed to buy one for any of my units. While I certainly don't doubt your information, "making" an armor kit, and "deploying" an armor kit are two very different things. As just one other example, PASGT vests and helmets of the time were only rated against 9mm rounds, at best - there were plenty of other personal armor systems out there, that met or exceeded military requirements, but they were always "too expensive for general issue."

      I've got a buddy of mine ( I worked with him after I got out of active duty and we were in sister units in the Reserves) that was there in Somalia at the time, we went to go see the movie when it came out, and I remember after the movie we walked out of the theater and he had shivers down his spine. I asked him "What's up?" He just looked at me and said it was a scarily close depiction.

    Our Army was a real partner in the movie. The equipment, training, the storyline and dialogue. The Rangers and 160th SOAR demanded that there be no cowboy BS, that it be spot on, because the memories of those men would be dishonored if it were otherwise.

    The "armor" on the Humvees was practically nonexistent at the time. There were some units in the Army that may of had a couple semi armored Humvees but the VAST majority were skinned in nothing more than the standard relatively thin sheet of steel and aluminum. Hell a lot of them had open truck beds or had canvas covers on the backs before about 02-03, and even then it still took a long while for armor plating upgrades to roll out to combat deployed troops.

      2007 a childhood friend of mine lost his life in combat, the story I was told is they had armor by then but not much on the bottom, they drove over an IED that was basically and RPG in a hole pointed upwards.

    • @darksydedigital
      @darksydedigital Год назад

      @@SUPRAMIKE18 Sorry to hear about your friend and my brother in arms. Sadly even though at that point armor plating on the doors and sides was becoming more common at that point, little consideration was being given to the undercarriage of the Humvees then. They did eventually start to address it, and then started looking into a new vehicle type all together that took it into consideration from the very design process with a more v shaped hull that deflects the blast. Even if shrapnel didn't do you in the concussive blast could very well kill ya too. TBIs and the like as well.

      While I agree with this in most cases, Somalia was an exception at the time. It's less so now however that is not important. The U.S Military was there to directly support the U.N and Red Cross Humanitarian relief efforts, and factions like the SNA were disrupting and hoarding aid distribution as that was their quickest way to power during the Civil War, which is still ongoing btw, over the other factions and clans. Our purpose for being there wasn't like Iraq, Libya, or Vietnam. We didn't make up random shit for neo-imperialist purposes in Somalia. The U.S was there to actually help civilians, and while granted many of the people didn't see it that way due to the entrenched Clan Culture, I don't think that really matters when there was literally a famine going on with militant groups hoarding food meant for the people. Also, It's not like the U.S was the one who set up the Transitional Government as a puppet government like we did in Iraq or Afghanistan, we had left Somalia way before that point.
