- I put 8 meters of RGB LED strips onto my bike wheels for a total of 200 LEDs. Super bright, even a bit blinding, but very fun.

Broooo this is really sick. That's absolutely the coolest thing I have seen in a while and it usually takes a lot to impress and gage my interest. Love the lights when riding at night, makes for cool cinematic shots even!
hold my beer, im buying a 3d printer
5:16 was amazing
Amazing video, dude! I'm actually plannin on doing something like this to my own bike. Do you by any chance remember what size battery pack you had and how long it lastest?
Thanks! The battery pack is a 3xAA. I don't know how long it would last as one of them broke during filming (at the end of this video) and I took them off the bike after that.
Right now I'm testing out using a couple of 18650 cells in parallel with a voltage booster. So far it's been solid powering an Arduino and 107 RGB LEDs.
You might be able to power these lights and the controller with a single 18650 since there are fewer lights per strip and the controller likely takes less current. Which would be nice as you'd drop some weight and have a rechargeable battery.
@@EdLewis Ah I see. I was planning on maybe doing something with a 5 Volt LED strip and power those with phone power banks for the sake of recharge ability. But then I'd be stuck with the same cheap controller that might break like yours seemingly did. But I thank you for the idea of using individual cells. I'm gonna look into that too!
@@FellowTaxPayer the breaking was entirely my fault and not due to the controller. It was a result of me not securing the the wire that went to the controller so that there was stress on the connection to the controller itself. I got away with it for a while, but the constant changes in acceleration on the connection eventually broke it.
I found you i was looking up how to turn my LED bike rims into COB (Tron looking rims) 🤓👍🏼
Taking notes ✍️... Thank you ! For your video :) ..... Peace ✌️
Nice work! Now roll through to Bike Party!
How did you make accurate measurements? It looks dope!
Thanks, the next one is way better, too. Keep adding more features to it. Need to make a video.
As for measurements, I use digital calipers. You can get an OK enough one for $10. My splurge one is only $30.
He deserves a million subscribers
Thanks. I need to make more than one video a year, though :)
Very inventive clever solution. Though I think it makes the bike more tempting to thieves
True. I just used this for a night ride. Would never leave locked up like this.
How can I do this without a 3D printer? Do you sell the parts?
Haktic Gaming no I don’t. These would vary depending on the rims and I didn’t want to dig into that.
After looking at the website I realized that, is their another solution to get the rgb lights on my wheels?
@@Haktic hey man, most light strips have a gluish back, so glue it to your wheel, add a bit of hot glue if needed, and use a lot of zip chains ( the plastic thing that costs 1$ for 100 ) to attach the batteries. I personnaly use an external battery for my phone and it works great !
How much hours does the battery hold
That's awesome gonna put blue lights on my bike
Only thing i can see is that this man doesn't wear socks
You remind me of myself, but with better ideas, and a sweet 3D printer. Lol!!! Subbed!
Hah! Thanks
Hello
Congratulations for this video. Amazing effects you made.
I’ve been riding my bike for about two months back to work and home people in Fort Worth try to hit me so many times because I have no lights went to Walmart grab a couple of LED green lights put them on the tire it was amazing 10 people moved away they see me on the streets now two people really surprised to see something like that
The classic white and red lights are key as well. You can now get ones the recharge via USB and are very bright. Way nicer than the old ones you needed a bunch of AA or AAAs for. Stay safe out there!
At least he can justify the print now! Of course you could have just bought something similar on Amazon that lights up the wheel and even can do words, and picture for around $60.
Amazing!
How did you realized the video effect at 5:17?
Thank you. It's the Trail effect in Final Cut Pro X
OK I'd like to offer my services as a tester for your product. I ride with the husky every night, spring, summer, fall winter - yes in New Hampshire. What better way to test your design than in the harsh New England sub-zero extremes.
Hi, Chris!
That would make these parts more brittle. Although the next thing I want to try is to add in a microcontroller with an accelerometer so the lighting effects could be tied in to speed.
It is water proof
Maybe place a patent on this idea?
im having trouble finding a good battery mounting situation
Have you tested those spoke clips with jarring bumps pot holes. i would be concerned about going fast hitting a pot hole and have the front wheel clips dislodge and possibly wrapping the wires around the wheel and causing a face plant.
No. I try and avoid those :)
But even if it did there would have to be a bunch of clips failing at once and then the strip somehow wrapping around the brake pads. If you wrap the strips so that the end faces backwards when it's at the top of the wheel (CW when on left side, CCW when on the right) it will just come loose and start flapping against the frame.
Boi. You ever heard of socks
Marina Rafei lol. Normally I do. Since I was in and out a lot that day and don’t wear shoes inside I was treating them like outdoor slippers
@@EdLewis nicee😂😂
🌈🦋Can you put them on a wheelchair?💝🙂
Absolutely. The diameter on those wheels look to be the same or smaller. You could also go for an underglow option instead, which would be incredibly easy to install and you'd be able to have the color control options available to change while you're riding it.
Oh, you could go much further with this for underglow. Can go with bluetooth control for the color scheme. Can set up a custom control unit with any kind of buttons you want (I like arcade buttons) for changing the settings and use that as input for an Arduino. Can add reverse lights for backing up. So many options.
Can you change the color with a controller or they change automatically ??
The controls let you choose mode, color, and brightness. So you can choose a mode that stays one color or you can have it color cycle. A few others as well, but those were my favorites.
amazing
This is legit!
if that ever comes loose you're goin to be fucked when it tangles up inside your wheel and chain
Any specifics on the led strips you used? Are they battery powered? Or rechargeable? Brand? Length?
The link seems to be dead now, but you'll find a lot of similar options if you search for "battery powered rgb led strip." This one, for example: www.amazon.com/Lights-Battery-Powered-Operated-Controller/dp/B07QK45LZZ/
These are all powered by 3x AA batteries. Rechargeables might be OK for shorter uses since they have a lower voltage. If you're OK with electronics, I'd recommend using a 18650 with a voltage booster to replace this.
For length, you want 2 meters and you can cut it down to size. To see just how much you need, measure the diameter and multiply that times 3.14. A 1 meter strip can only go around a 12.5" circle and a 2 meter can go around a 25" circle.
Your cycle is nice please tell cycle name and company brand
Was gonna get some for my bike, but no thank you, too damn complicated
dope but, that led panel is so big, so looks a bit weird, a square in the wheel xd

Hey can you sell those light connect era that help the lights on the wheel
I’m doing this but it’s a mountain bike... do I _really_ need to 3D print or am I good coz I don’t have a 3D printer?
If you can get them to stay on... great!
You can also buy a single led strip with a usb plug then stick it on your frame (top tube ) and connect the usb with a Phone that is being mounted on the handlebar
Can you share your 3D printer design so I can add these to my wheels?
Can't right now. I'm redoing this design because there was a problem with the original.
Ed Lewis thank you for the reply!!!
@@georgealvarado5060 Sure. It's a little tricky because different rims have different angles. And there are different angles for the spokes coming off of the rims. I'll see if I can do a customizer script for thingiverse so you can adjust angles and sizes for different LED strips.
Meanwhile, here's the current status twitter.com/edabot/status/1316396837780295682
Nice
Instalations please
Can we order the clips anywhere for people without a 3d printer?
Sort of. There are services for this such as Print a Thing or Treatstock. The only problem is that this model might need some fine tuning to fit your rims.
Good job. If only the battery pack wasnt so big ...
True, would redo this with LiPos if I go back to it.
were i will get thoes exect light i would love to have it .
It's in the description. Mine are the 2m versions
Athonada ethu light and sounds aa
Those light's are for Race's KNOT a Huffy. If you can't see or hear what's going on around you. Don't ride at night.
That's right I will break that shit every time. I can't stay on my bike so it's useless for my fund ass.
Do you sale the clips?
Hi man can u put
led lights to helmet
How much time last the batteries?
Where is led lights
Hey are you selling those I need that for my motorcycle
No, but I should look into that. A motorcycle would be a serious stress test for this. Smaller wheels and much higher speeds? Yikes.
How many day battery run out
Please tell me are those clips can buy anywhere ..?
Sorry, not right now. In fact, I just started working on the update. Way nicer effects, both wheels in sync, effects that change with different speeds, and iphone control
Thanks

do you sell the clips?
No, sorry. I'll see if I still have the file and can put it on thingiverse or another site.

Where do i get the clips to hold the led strips
I should make a few versions of these and see if people would like to buy them. Otherwise the only option now is to print them yourself
Can u sell these i will order them?

The lights, yes. The battery pack and light controller, no.
are these water resistant?
The strip is waterproof. The battery case and controller aren't.

can you reload the batteries?
Yup. It's a basic battery pack with the springs
@@EdLewis thank you
I thought knock off ghetto Walmart Target already in stores there's a friend he's making a knock off
What’s the battery life?
I never found out. After that strip broke at the end I needed to get the bike tuned up and ended up stripping all of the gear off for that. Haven't put it back on yet as I have different plans for a future lighting setup.
Even so, it'll vary with modes (always on vs. blinking, for example) and brightness.
Ed Lewis I actually created my own set of lights and each strip has a 2200mah battery pack on it... it last about 1-2 hours for me depending on the light color and such. Might upgrade the battery packs
Where can I buy batrei
The batteries here are regular AAs
you are cool
Forbidden in my country
Why?
How long does the battery last?
I don't know. One of the connectors broke before I got to that point. I took them off and am thinking of redoing this with addressable LEDs and lithium batteries instead.
Ed Lewis thanks for the reply
have you tried the FastLED lib for arduino? you can hook that to a bluefruit from adafruit and control both wheels from your phone. Thank you for sharing your experiments. I know a ton about addressable LEDs but nothing about 3D printing, so this was immensely helpful.
I think I tried that a while ago. I used a plasma library for a neopixel ring for a Halloween prop which was awesome.
I know a decent bit about addressables and was thinking of doing just what you're saying so that effects could be controlled by the phone. I'd also like to tie the effects to the speed of the bike.
If I was to blue sky it., I'd like to add in some magnets and reed switches to have a funkier Revo light effect. Instead of red and white lights, have it look like sparks are coming up from the wheels contacting the ground.
EDIT: holy crap, Adafruit came out with a Bluefruit Feather? Nice!
OK, been doing a bit of research, but since you know more about this, I'd love to ask:
What do I need to power and control a 2m strip of neopixels (30 per meter is fine) that could last for at least 30 minutes of medium brightness lighting?
Can I control both via bluetooth at the same time?
What kind of bike is that?
I don't know! I bought it used from someone in SF and it had been repainted.
