Building the 23’ V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 26: Shaping the breasthook
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- This week we’re shaping and installing our breasthook. The first step is to make a paper pattern from the boat so we have a shape to go from. We’ll then take that over to our breasthook and find the best positioning and trace our cutting lines. In addition we’re going to lift the angles on the sides of the boat so we know what angle to cut our breasthook at. Then it’s on to my Atlas Power King bandsaw to cut the piece on all sides including the large radius in the center.

Lou, your my favorite teacher.
I'm not a plant expert or a scientist or any of that...in fact I'm not very bright at all. But I have been working with wood for a long time. I believe, and this is just my impression, that the darkness in the grain at the crook in the tree is where the wood cells have been damaged through stressors over time and the sap collects in them. The older sap deposits Amber's overtime. I've noticed those dark spots are always much harder than the rest of the wood similar to the darker anual rings that grow more slowly in the winter.
Someone could easily nit pick your bandsaw technique watching it on a video when you can arm chair quarterback but I can tell you from running big tools for 35 years, have a 36" 9.5HP saw in the shop, I could never have landed that breast hook with as good a fit as you did in a single shot. A perfect case of when someone makes something look easy... it will likely be the hardest thing you will ever try to do.
Like a bunch of other comments every time you watch this. I've already watched it several times. And I'll keep watching it every now and then. Lou is such a master shipwright.
Structure and strength are what the nature of wood can allow us to aspire to, and achieve, through good carpentry. So we're duty bound to honour that, by letting the wood speak for itself as much as possible. It's working hard for us even where it can't be seen. Great job Louis.
Another great video Lou, I especially like the fact that in this skiff build, you have so far limited your tools to those that are readily available to individuals who may not have a big well equipped shop. As always, sharing your years of experience, and explaining the hows and whys as you build your "one off" works of art.
Thanks Lou, and keep on truck'n !!!
In a world where the daily news depresses me, your boat builds are calming and make the day better.
That is one beautiful, natural, joint perfectly crafted into place. A fitting crown for her to wear. Thank you for teaching us how to do it too.
Always a pleasure, had his eye on that piece of wood from the very first, and there it sits once a tree now a boat.
Hats off to you sir, shes a beauty
Lou is an absolute ART TEAST! God that thing is beautiful
This is elixir to my soul! If there were more Lous around, the world would be a better place. No doubt. Thank You and bless You brother Lou.
Just realized you've passed 175k subscribers! Congratulations on another milestone.
I am CJ and I am extreemly happy to see my name on the board! thanks!!
proud to support this amazing work and teachings!
I'm amazed how vast your knowledge is when it comes to ship building and woods
what a craftsman, thank you for posting these, from someone who can't cut a 2x4 straight, I really appreciate your skill! please keep them coming!
Love how you kicked away the offcuts, that's some balance and flexibility! You should put out "Lou's Exercise Video." Beautiful work and it's nice to see all the planning you did many months ago with wood selection coming to fruition.
Anyone else would have been panic stricken hacking into that beautiful slab of timber. The key to results like this is the amount of forethought from Lou prior to making any cuts, measure 10 times cut once. Making sure he had enough room in the band saw to achieve that radius is typical of a well planned process, love this stuff!
I've seen some other breast hooks you made but every time I'm blown away by the beauty of the wood. This boat is such a cool combination of old and new, the stem shows it perfectly with the lamination and the crook right next to each other.
This build is going great! I look forward to every episode!
Love seeing the videos coming in every week.
Lol, when you start reading that board and the video starts off with 1 guy working! I leave fast! That has been done to me, maybe a different experience? Altough quality was produced! Awesome boat by the way! Internet years ago! Yeash!
Nice work. Sell those drops as pen blanks.
Great bandsaw work
Yeah, he's a real craftsman.
Love your attention to detail 😀
Holy cow Lou, the actual size of the boat really showed with you standing in it! That’s Big!
That is a stunningly beautiful piece of wood. The whole boat is turning into a work of art.
Did anyone else think of Matt Cromona when Lou put the denatured alcohol on the breast hook? Nice job Lou!
Really spectacular work!
Absolutely love the videos! Found your channel this week and youve very quickly become my favorite RUclipsr lol. Once it warms up ill be trying my hand at building my first boat! Nothing beats the idea of fishing out of a boat i made. Patiently waiting and looking forward to more videos!
ya make me cry ya bugga , i have all my life wanted to be a carpenter /cabinet maker , i try but tend to fail all the time i wish i could have done an aprentiship under you because i would know what the hell im ment to be doing , i so love your work thank you for sharing with us all .
Louis, tell me you are saving the scraps from
that breasthook. Those crotch figure offcuts,
would make awesome pens, or something
else.
Your skills with that little bandsaw, simply
AMAZING!
steve
It is Doty with a long "O" Think Doughnut, I want this boat !! Do we know it's destiny yet at this point ?? So happy to make the board, hope to stop up and see you some summer trip up to the north East.
I love your work.
Great video Lou!. Happy to see my name on your Patreon board! Love the white oak. Stay well Buddy
Awesome !!!!
Beautiful work, Louis.
Excellent...
Estou em Curitiba Paraná Brasil !
A maneira com que você executa suas embarcações , com minúcias de detalhes é surpreendente ! Sou neto de construtor naval !
wish we could have seen more of the fitting work. Thanks
Beautiful work gentlemen.
Coming along nice Lou! Wow!
From what I can find out Lou, with figuring out wood crotch terminology, like the medullary rays the dark area's in the grains are simple called grains. There are light colored grains and dark colored grains, within the grains themselves.
I love your videos and expertise
Really looks sharp!
That one piece is going to set the tone of the whole boat. The way the grain follows the lines of the boat will tell the viewer that every detail of the boat that he cannot see is just as perfect as the breasthook. (BTW, if you want to modify my card, I've moved from Ypsilanti to Milan, MI.)
thats one gorgeous piece of crotch wood. you do it justice with the care you take.
Sweet.
Wooo new video
That is awesome. Your eye for wood, and the people you work with to get that quality is amazing.
Beautiful
Do people downvote by accident do you think? What's not to like?
Could the darkness be extra tree sap
How long will a boat like this last with being stored indoors over the winter? Curious about the total weight to? I love this channel
The grain is awesome in the breasthook! It will be awesome with varnish! The little bandsaw is great do you know of the facebook group fans of old woodworking equipment!
just like that!
Wow.
Love your work Louie!
Ever consider going side or center console with this design? And install a poly fuel tank in the bilge? Is this setup for a long shaft?
Seems the Patreon page hasn't been updated.
i friggin love you dude, my local coast live oak is just like that. no straight lumber out of it, but you get great crotches that are more than strong. way more than strong. sneezes at that without thinking about it? you've got me laughing myself to the floor. just like that. yeah when you wet it it's AMAZING. right?
molto bello, bravo...
How often do you get cracking and warping with crotch wood like that? I'd think it would be very unstable with seasonal changes in humidity.
Everything looks great with plenty of alcohol!
Ladies, find yourself a man that talks about you like Louis talks about his bandsaw.
i should say Wright..
The rain moisture gets puddled where the limb jets off the tree is why there darker growth rings.
Beautiful
I was reviewing your work skiff series when you posted this… what a coincidence! Beautiful work, Lou !
Loved the violjn virtual duet at the end. Loved all the rest too !! ❤
Beautiful
Wow you guys have been cranking these out ;))) going to watch this one a few times, like all of them ;) such amazing content, that you wonderful people for putting all this work on film to have people see it forever. My hat’s off ..!
The Da Vinci of boat builders. Love your work. Thanks for sharing with us!
Lou, I bet you don't even realize it but every thing you say you say it in a teaching manor. Even little things like your bandsaw running the teeth in the center instead of the outside, I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for the little teachings you always tend to sneak in!
Just gorgeous Lou. Exceptional work once again!
Love your love of your craft .. art really. It's in your blood and soul and we all can feel your passion . Great to see you work with care and enthusiasm
14:43 .. woodgasm? that's one of the most beautiful accents to ANYTHING that I've seen in all my 46 years workin' with wood from birdhouses to entire wood framed homes .. thank you Lou !!! May God Bless you, your team and your builds
The Master strikes again. Building the most beautiful boat ever. If only I was talented enough to build one myself. Fantastic, Lou!
I just knew this boat was going to be more floating fine furniture than working skiff. Lou, you build beautiful boats and that breast hook (and I'm sure the stern knees will be also) is beautiful. Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend.
ahhhh a man and his wood!
I love this boat
Yeah, me too. She is absolutely gorgeous.
Lou you are really good at fitting. Pleasure to watch.
Excellent work with the grain
Such an impressive piece of work. Thanks Lou for your videos.
You've got to love the figure in that white oak. It looks amazing.
Exquisite!!
The darkness is the gravity bringing the moisture down the branch down the trunk !
I grew up using that exact same Atlas bandsaw. You are right about placement of the blade on the rubber wheel facings. Great memories. The sound is the same.
That darkness is the motion of the tree branch and the trunk arm wrestling each other stress if you ask me !
That’s what you call Measure twice cut once. emphasis on cut once. Nicely done 🤘🏻
that is called tension wood
You are such a craftsman.
It’ll soon be in the water. 💪
Thanks for sharing!
A+100 young man🙂
Thanks Lou!! Your saw could buy and sell a body and not even miss em:) Wow on the crown too.
Lou , Howdy from Corpus Christi ! I believe the discoloration in the figure of the oak is mineral streak. In cabinet making with veneered panels we called matched figure like that pattern " horse's main", Great eye for the selection of that crotch. Best Regards Matt
Excellent travail de qualité et excellente prestation
Going to be a nice boat 👍
