- In this video Peter McLeod runs through his top 16 grayling patterns from Fulling Mill Flies. He covers dry flies, emergers, beaded nymphs and jig flies that he uses on the Chalkstreams. There are obviously many patterns out there, but here are some staple patterns that are easily available and should be the mainstay of any grayling fishing box.

In Alaska, I've found that the #1 fly pattern for Grayling would have to be an Elk Hair Caddis followed closely by an egg imitation when Salmon are spawning in the Fall. Skating the Elk Hair Caddis on the water's surface has accounted for some spectacular takes from grayling as they will launch their entire body out of the water to get the fly.

Alaskan Grayling are a different species to those found in the UK. You have Arctic Grayling that are bigger and more predatory whilst we have the European Grayling.
They have slightly different feeding habits and therefore we see different flies and even styles of fishing.
I live in ak too and want to start getting into fly fishing this summer for grayling and trout. What are your favorite flies for up here?

can't beat a bit of lureflash or peacock dub for the grayling, little bit of gold too, they seem to like a shiny glint where I'm from

Hi there, have you ever tried Mop flies or Jan Juan Worm, any kind of worm patterns when the water is murky? I've seen many salmon fishing videos when big grayling came for salmonflies, or during trout fishing with articulated trout streamers and the first big fish was a big grayling. It is just interesting, even big grayling eat baitfish and crawfish too... It worth to try! ;) maybe you will put some big streamers in this fly box then :D
Hi Akos, thanks for the comment, and squirmy worms often work well on grayling. Re baitfish and crawfish I am sure they work, but we are not allowed to use them on the Chalkstreams, dry fly and nymph only hence why they are missing.. thanks for the suggestion though!
