- As so many people seemed to like peering round different campervans in the last video, and as the CCM show was on again at the NEC, I bought a last-minute ticket and went along on the Friday to see if anything caught my eye.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, here's the link: www.ko-fi.com/davidjohns and thank you!

"And for some couples that would surely be a bonus" You kill me!
I don't become a friend of the idea with the slide-down beds...everyone has to get up or get in at the same time, otherwise the space under the bed is only a crawlspace...you won't get woken up with a fresh coffee in the morning, because the kitchen is blocked...
🤔
Thx a lot for taking us with you!
👍👍👍
'Viewing by appointment only' - well, don't take it to a caravan, camping and motorhome show and exhibit it, then. If they got any takers with that lofty attitude, fair play to them, but I'd have been put off by that alone; 'oh right, suit yourselves, I'll look elsewhere'.
Don't know about this market, but other markets hire out the display space just to push competitors out. Putting some super expensive motorhomes/caravans etc out and covering the place is win win for the company, even if they don't allow/provide details. Was there in the week, and same happened for tents. 100s of the same shape/style/price awning, and about 10 tents in the whole place.
That happens on all kinds of shows. That way manufacturers can offer specific clients more time to view their product without interference or buyers a chance to see a finished product to help them choose their exact specification. Showing products can be very expensive for manufacturers and this way they can make a deal with a customer to use their product for the show. We have viewed products like this quite a few times and it's nice that it's at a show, because you can see more products from the manufacturer and their competitors all at once.
Me too. Ridiculous!
Generally, things like this happen for a reason. Meaning someone somewhere did something stupid to one or multiple motorhomes. Be it causing damage, theft etc. So making stuff more difficult for most other people. Just no telling.
My wife and I went during the week and just didn't bother looking at those asking for an appointment but in some ways I could understand the need for them to do so. We witnessed little tykes clambering all over the beds and furniture of 80k motorhomes like it was a playground, mum and dad oblivious to the fact others wanted to look around too. I must be getting old. 😂
Bilbo? That name has a ring to it.
I'm going on an adventure!
Amazing what you can fit inside a little camper, at those prices though I can see why people take it up to make there own like yourself
Oh, lots of lovely vehicles to dream about! Thanks!
Come back to reality David and enjoy your amazing home built, don’t be tempted by the financial dark side! 😮
Fear not, I don't have the cash for one anyway!!
I love seeing these campervans.
I like the idea of single bunks, a lot of storage above/below if a solo traveller. I enjoyed the look around. Thank you. Cheers.
if you have an open toilet opposite the sink you will need to be quite friendly with everyone on board.
I did enjoy seeing all the new vans. In 1966 my husband and I travelled through the US and Canada in a VW camper.
Enjoyed your commentary and camera work. It's a shame you couldn't go into some of them.
The giant one reminded me of a double decker bus, it must be impressive inside.
The small Oasi should get awards for clever use of space!
There's so much to like about your perspective on these vans, David, lots of tongue-in-cheek. Very entertaining. I laughed, literally out loud, on several occasions. For instance, the loud and clear "meh" on Westphalia for their apparent contempt of potential buyers by restricting hands-on inspection, your astute pointing out of the loo being close to the kitchen in another van, and other gems. Noting your obvious desire for a pop-top, I submit that you should definitely convert your van to a pop-top, the sideways one as first choice. I'm confident you'd agree. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode as I do all of them. As always, great content, production, quality and especially presentation. Cheers!
🤣🤣
Thank you ...highlighted our 2023 show ....mostly vans very few motor homes...the ones you showed us would suit me ..what a difference in the " old days" 🤣☹️ no loo or shower.....most interesting trip? Half way around Aus 2 adults- 2 teenagers- 2 corgis in a very basic Toyota Hiace motor home - memories!! Jan Adelaide
So excited to see them attempting an all electric van. We need better battery technology, though.
True
I wonder if campsites start complaining when people charge up during an overnight stay.
I attended on the Wednesday and wanted to look at the Westfalias but was put off by the ‘appointment only’ nonsense. I found their attitude quite snooty too. Crossed them off my list. When you pay for a ticket, you don’t expect to be making appointments, there’s too much to see and not enough time. Shout out to Dirty Weekender who were very friendly and welcoming.
Yes, I found them friendly too
LOL When I lived in the Midlands I made it a rule to never drive to the NEC. Train and Maglev. Which will date when I did it! xx
That smaller Wingamm is perfect. Wow, would love to travel in that.
Caravans and camping for rich elites only
Camping? A tent is cheap as chips and there are plenty of places where you can pitch it for free.
It's funny, if you're seen driving around in a (used) Ferrari, everyone assumes you're rich, but if you have a caravan or campervan for the same money few will bat an eyelid.
SO much fun to poke around the motorhomes. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for watching!
Just the ticket! Be nice to see some more lengthy reviews. Hopefully the makers will see this and offer you some vans for the weekend to review?
I think David is too honest for some makers unlike many YT’s .
Really appreciated your time and effort! Absolutely loved peering into all those lovely new vans. Definitely helps to solidify my wants and needs list. I hope to at least rent one this summer for a trial run. We have the roads for those huge motor homes here in the U.S., but I wouldn't get one even if could afford one. Just too big to drive around, gas hogs and lots of limitations on where you can go with them. If you need something that big and well kitted out, might as well just stay home. Anyway, hope the rest of your van updates are going well.
OOOOO a purple van!!🙃
It seems that everyone in Europe and America is crazy for camper-vans these days.
There’s a lot of innovation in the industry right now, and a lot of the same old ideas cosmetically updated.
I really like your little “home made” camper-van. For one person it’s all you need.
We have a deposit down on a new, all fiberglass 17 foot Casita travel trailer, made right here in Texas. Supposedly taking delivery in late July 2023.
Thanks for showing us around.
Happy Camping
I like David's van too. It makes good use of space and has some nice ideas and technology in it. The unobstructed side door is good. I like that he often makes big changes to it.
Bilbos rear kitchen layout is a winner. I have that layout in my 1999 Bilbos long wheelbase T4.
Yes David, we all certainly enjoyed it. Gives a person something to do while waiting on spring. Travel safe out there.
Thanks 👍
I enjoyed that , it would have been nice to see if there were any micro camper vans / ready made camper conversion kits for us on the cheaper end of the market :)
I didn't spot any
Very cool stuff. Thanks for showing them.
The truck bed mount ones are nice, till you have to deal with one. I am sure modern ones are nice but ours in the 80's was cramped and heavy. Had a pop up camper trailer before that, enjoyed that. Light when pulling it and room wise it wasn't bad. After the truck bed camper went through a few class B motorhomes pulling a car behind them. Ended with a dually pulling a camper trailer which was my favorite. Now a partially outfitted van with a handicap lift that can handle short camping trips. Sometimes just nice to get away.
If you say the prices fast enough, they don't sound so much.😉
Panel van with bed 80k please sir lol saw you coming
Lovely tours again indeed
Halls of dream's David, lets hope they can come true one day eh?
Sweet mother, the prices of these things.... Eye watering. Only in my dreams at this point. I'll have to content myself with my humble setup of wooden boxes in an empty cargo box trailer. Or better, when I head out on train or on foot with my backpack to hammock in the woods.
I do like your favourite and agree that VW T watevertheyarenow seem mental prices. I did what you did and built my own. Not the best thing but it’s mine, so there. 🤣
Exactly! I feel the same about mine 😀
Love your references to movies and music, always spot on! Thank you for your clever presentations. Always enjoyable no matter the content!
I was recently at a similar fair near my place. It is just always great to look around camper vans - whether by oneself or vicariously through a youtuber's lense.
Also, it appears that there are differences in style between the British converters that you showed and German converters that I saw. Even looking at the Chaussons, I seem to see differences between the style they offer in GB and in Germany (or on the continent generally?). Surface materials and colour schemes mostly.
Thanks for letting us have a peek!
PS: The fair I went to showed some Cross-Country trailers. They were fantastic! If you ever come across this kind of thing, please make a video, I'd love to see your perspective on this kind of thing!
Great video. I always have time to look at vans and you’re the only RUclipsr that I follow to show the Renault conversion. The vans are getting so expensive. The Wingamms are my favourites too. AutoSleeper used to also do a great motorhome with a monocoque body but they stopped, someone said it was due to cost! Maybe they should look to reintroduce it. I’m just upgrading my 5.41m Devon Coladado, similar layout to the Symbol, to a massive 6.36m Devon Aztec XL. We have just over a week to wait until we collect it and I can’t wait. Have you thought about a visit to AutoSleeper? Or maybe you’ve done one and I missed it?
I haven't, it hadn't crossed my mind to ask them!
Dig those little slide in campers. Thanks for taking us along.
That was an eye opener into a world I struggle to understand! 🤔
Thanks, David!
A great presentation, as usual.
interesting use of space with the 2 single bunk beds
For some of these prices it might be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand van and refit it
johnny: Definitely. As posted above (or the other vid) you can buy a house for £60k up here (Co. Durham and surrounds) real bricks and mortar. Best to buy a van and get it kitted out in exactly your layout - no compromises 👌‼️
You didn't use your "Hello, I'm a RUclipsr. Would you like to show me around your swanky vehicle so I can put it on the internets for you?" 🤣😉
Haha, yes, his approach in this video is so much nicer :)
Excellent!!....thank you David !.....cheers
Thank you too!
I really enjoyed your voice over. After all the random NEC shows ive watched this one i could actually enjoy. Greetings from Sweden.
Glad you enjoyed it!
At 1.9 meters in height I watch both of your channels with a fascination of cool things that I would like to do but can never do. Those vans look awesome but seeing me trying to fit into one would be comical and uncomfortable. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you
No Earthroamer? They are fantastic! And not build for narrow English country lanes either although not quite as big as that last one you showed.
Another interesting day out.
Indeed!
That fully electric campervan sure was nice. I figure more of those and fully electric RV's and the like are going to be game changers for a lot of people.
Definitely, once they get a better range
@@Vandemonium If they're backed up with solar for the main batteries & such, all the better!
Unfortunately not much sun in the UK except in peak summertime and the amount of solar you could mount to a van roof would be negligible in terms of motive power requirements.
We visited the show as well and found the accompanied viewing thing a put off as well. Loved the Brownie and Oasi too. Maybe one day can afford to get something like these but not now.
Shouldn't the electric moped sign have said "Learner legal"?
Are you feeling alright David? You didn't even mention the door mounted trash cans on the Wingamm vans.
🤣
I'll have to build my own, can't afford these
I just like listening to your narrations. I live in hope for the occasional genial rant though, they are superb entertainment. I used to really enjoy caravanning in the UK way back. It wasn't that expensive at the time.
Thank you kindly!
That second Wingamm is the first one I've seen that I would actually like to have.
As you say, same old, same old. If you only want to make tea or coffee they're fine but if you actually want to cook a meal you'll struggle. Sink with no drainer so water will run everywhere. In reality you can't go 'touring' in any those. Excellent video, thank you!
Tire kicker... thanks for improving my vocabulary. :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this David, thank you.
Mite aswell go on holiday in a Tesco's food delivery van lol 🤣🤣🤣
Great video
3:13 oh I like. But i have always been into the smaller ones. Goes for narrowboats too
Me too
from looking, looking again, comparing as well as internationally comparing, I do think - though I can't be sure - that Rapido (French Brittany) have the best value for money - especially as to space and engine - oh and, yes, I do like your video.s !
Thank you
Yay! More sneak peeks, such pretty colours, I love the electric blue. The heated seats in rose and the bunk beds get a 👍 . So disappointed when you announced the unusual feature on Bilbo’s van was a side-opening pop top and not a round door😁The excitement in your voice says you really do like pop tops!
You should take a look at Ken and Carol with their You Tube program The Little Red Camper. Life is too short. Lovely little camper.
Marion: He annoys the hell out of me, he is such a lazy cuss - I've never seen him even make a cup of tea for his wife ... 👎😒
The agony of getting in and out of the car park is what put me off of going to this show, after my experience at the October show. Westfalia didn't have accompanied viewing only at the last show - I wonder whether they had a bad experience there? 🙄 Their interiors aren't particularly common for a VW-type build which more usually have side or u-shaped layouts. Those persist because the tests of time show that they work for many users. I do like the Westfalias.
The half hour from the motorway to the car park was ridiculous
My wife adored that VW purple van.
One thing seeing all those vans proves - DIY'ers do much better designs. :)
Well, the ones that add a bathroom, yes, sometimes :D
The UK Gov. demands campervans have fridges, but not toilets, which is stupid, and causes a mess which then causes councils to ban parking for campervans....
Like new cars, these campers seem way too expensive; hopefully, prices will go down in the next couple of years.
Funny to see all the small stuff there. Here in the US its all long travel trailers, 5th wheels that are 45' long and then big class A RV's and Prevost bus conversions. Granted you do have a lot of Sprinter / Transit conversions as well, but many more larger RV's here.
Bloody hell, a ticket the night before? Mustn't be that busy then if they tickets still the night before
You can buy a detached house in some parts of rural Northern Ireland for half the price of some of those vans. Unbelievable those prices really, all that glitters is not gold, comes to mind.
I think purchasing a new/newish van and attempting your own build (or sourse someone competent to fit one out) is the way to go. Prices are through the roof.
I'd much prefer spending money like that on a canal boat tbh.
My old campervan that I've had for fives years cost a fraction of those prices, I'll get more than I paid for it when I sell it so these price hikes will do me a favour I guess. Thanks for showing us around David.
yay!
5 different vans, then 150 of the exact same carbon copy. XD
I find it amusing that the electric van was stating that it has a range of 200 miles as if that were an accomplishment. That won't get you very far around here.
I work on these electric vans and you have no hope of getting 200 miles. With that weight in the back you’re looking at 130-140 max! Some of the ones I see with 10k miles on them are getting under 120 miles.
Nice 1 m8, still like the T6, but its outa my price range. Thanks, I liked that tour.
Nice vans but the steering wheel is on the wrong side 😂😂
7:56 'Leaner Legal?' None of that portly legal stuff thank-you very much!
I don't get it. I can see no unaccompanied touring at a US show because people are weird. Mutants would poop in the shower (don't ask).
I didn't think the UK had such mutants, and the crowd doesn't look like "let's tear this place up" type.
Anyway, don't they get a tax write off if it's a floor model? I don't get the hands off logic.
Glad to see you are well. @8:02 You could not resist could you? 🙏 As they say, 'If the van is rocking, don't come a knocking'.🙈 Has Brexit and inflation impacted the price of motorhomes in the UK?
Inflation, certainly. I have no reliable information to make a judgement on Brexit's affect
what is the distinction you are making between "campervan" and "motorhome" ?
Campers are small, m/homes are large - usually over 6 metres. Anyway, I think that's the distinction 🤔🤔
Also campervans are converted from vans, whilst a motorhome has a coach-built habitation area fitted on the chassis.
Oh no!! I remember when you couldn't give campervans away and no I'm NOT that old!
and now they're so expensive no one can afford one!!!
I didn’t see you I did have a look about, maybe next year
👍
Great vid but far too short
I was worn out by that point!
@@Vandemonium I can only but imagine - love your channels ... I personally own an old VW t25 westfalia ... nothing but trouble 😬
The next time you go to this are a similar camper home show David, could you video some vehichels that were made just for a couple or a solo owner. So many of the vans you videoed had so many chairs and beds taking up space that a couple or a solo person would never need. Wonderful video as usual though.
Mmm well I can only film what's there and they're all like that!!!
@@Vandemonium Ah well just a thought. I guess that's why people like yourself construct your own.
The problem with most of the vehicles is they were sold hence being closed off to protect for their new owners.
I'm not convinced since every single Westfalia seemed marked as such and I didn't notice any sold signs (unlike on some other stands where that was the case)
@@Vandemonium Westfalia was only showing the same vans they had last October. Some of them were two years old.
Would have been nice to see the mini's, much more clever, to make the space work.
I went yesterday and Iv got to say the prices of converted vans especially vw’s is simply laughable I quickly noticed A genuine motorhome with better spec better build quality more space and more berths costs less.. there was a converted Mercedes’ sprinter van with a price tag of £180,000 😂
😳
I noticed back in 2018 how much more the VWs were, and they've leapt ahead since. The extra price and lack of bathrooms are a shame, but I think part of their appeal is the proliferation of 'Max Height' barriers that councils love, as they totally fail in their duty to represent the public and in fact, be public servanst.
A basic aire facility is IMO cheaper than some of the height contraptions they use.
No Burstners 😮
Bilbo's motorgnomes...
or Bilbo's Mordor-homes 🧝🧝♀
Electric boasting 205 range ? Really ! Not fit for purpose, if you got 150 out of it I'd be surprised. Wouldn't interest me until they did an electric van that did 550 miles minimum, and we all know that's not even on the horizon.
7min 59sec…….’Leaner Legal’ scooters……Made me laugh! 🛵🤔😂
Tyrekickers are the worst ;-)
That's me!
you are excused, as a content creator.
🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗
"By appointment only"... pf, it's like they don't want customers..
It is interesting how many manufacturers have gone for permanent bed across the back with garage below which was a design developed by van lifers. I do find most new vans a bit clinical in style and too claustrophobic. There's far too much stuff in them. You'd be hitting your head and elbows all the time. And there are not that many with a table large enough to play Settlers of Catan.
It's the european layout :)
Hi can ask you name of company showing the adapted van with side wheelchair lift fitted take care andy
Unfortunately, I didn't get their name, really sorry. It wasn't very obviously displayed 😞
Hotomobile was the name of the dealer 👍
David, are you living in your van, or did you eventually buy a house? Like your videos.
Bought a house! Cheers
8.00 minutes in the sign said the scooter was leaner legal, I’m guessing it should be learner legal, but how can you make such a glaring error in your advertising.
What defines a 'coachbuilt' motorhome ?
Where the main body of the van has been custom-made and installed onto a truck chassis, rather than them just converting the inside of a van.
