I totally agree with your point regarding these kids who borrow the lens/gear and put out a video just to put out a video and have not done the ground work as far as really getting to know the gear. I’ve had camera bodies and lenses that took months to fully “get to know.” I’m hoping Sony will fix these issues when they finally release the next lot of bodies. I’ve been waiting for over 6 weeks.
Thank you very much Mark appreciate it 🙂🙏 Yeah its a shame , some of them are adults that are famous You-tubers with tons of people following them and take their advice. Even though I waited to do the a7r4 review for example, I started to discover things months after. As far the issues none of them are really that bad and I am sure in time they will fix all of them. Hope you get your camera soon !!! I am sure the chip shortage has a lot to do with the delays .
wow man i have just purchased that set up a week ago to take on vacation ! first i want to say man great pics and i have the a7riv ,and you have nailed a great description couldnt have said it better keep up the good content man loved the video
I like your honest review. No BS compared to some so called expert reviewers. As a long-time SONY user (A1, A9, A7RII, A7S), I share some of your critique. For me, they are all minor issues, with some of them more related the personal preferences. I am happy to have a detachable grip as I hardly use them any more. But all my bodies have an L-Bracket installed. I find them far more convenient. I also experienced shorter battery life with the A1. As the start-up time of the A1 is so fast, I have set Auto Monitor to 10 sec and Power Save Time to 1min. I am testing this now, to see if it helps. Exposing the EVF to direct sun light, I have not been able to reproduce the black out issue. The same is true for the IBIS issue. Out of my 13 SONY lenses, I tried it with all non OSS lenses as well as with the 70-200 2.8, 100-400 and 200-600 lenses. All negative. Serial Nr. 377...., Firmware 1.01. For me, this would not be an issues, as I don't start video in stills mode. Agree with the LCD Screen. To me it is more a psychological issue, considering the A1 is a flag ship camera. The current resolution doesn't really bother me all that much. These small displays all suck in daylight. Also I could live with a lower resolution EVF. A couple days ago, I had the opportunity to use a Fuji GFX100S with a 3.69 million dot EVF. To me it was just fine, even tough I am used to the 9 million dot EVF on the A1. To me, lag less, fast blackout free and reliable AF tracking is much more important than resolution of the monitor display or EVF. Storage capacity of the CFexpress cards can be an issue for some people. It's 160GB today, 512GB tomorrow. Also, here it is more important, to be able to write to two CFexpress cards at the same time as opposed to CFexpress and SD cards. For those who push the envelope in wildlife and fast action photography, the A1 is currently the best choice.
Thank you so much Rene appreciate that !!! 🙂🙏 The EVF blackout only happened to me a few times about maybe 4-5 times but it can be annoying when it happens, lately I just try to keep the Eye sensor away from sunlight and its fine. I have not noticed the ibis issue with any of my lenses that some folks are experiencing, my serial # starts with 377 as well. As far as the grip its definitely a preference thing, for me I am usually out shooting all day so its a convenience. I just wish this camera was a little different then the normal Sony body but like I said its not a deal breaker in any way as I love the performance of this camera which is the most important thing. I been shooting Sony a little over 3 years now coming from Nikon, I started out with the A7iii and A7Riii , followed by the A9, A7r4 and now the A1 :) When I first switched from Nikon, I was shooting the D850 and D500 at the time, there was not many pros or enthusiasts shooting Sony at the time. I remember getting laughed at by the so called pros that were shooting Nikon and Canon, calling me crazy to Switch to Sony. Funny thing is every one of them is shooting Sony now when I run into them, I just chuckle to myself. Thank you again for all the great feedback !!!
@@SamRino "When I first switched from Nikon..." Funny enough, the same happened to me, when I purchased the A7S back in 2014 for it's low light capabilities to shoot pictures at concerts. I was frowned upon by the guys using their 1dx 's and flash. And there was me with that little, unknown camera, shooting silently with no flash, pictures of the same quality. It was a bit of surprise for same of them. For me, it was the beginning of using DSLM cameras and never went back to DSLR's.
Hello Sam. I don't know much about cameras 📷 today I learned something. (I think).. Although I enjoy watching your videos more, I think you have a unique talent.. Thank you for so much dedication. which is what makes us get to know the wild world more closely. .
Awesome Rajesh you ll definitely love it !!! I been using Topaz for a longtime before it was even popular, very good product. Thank you for watching and your feedback :)
First time seeing one of your videos. Well done. Great shots. Been leaning towards the Sony A7IV but seeing the 4k 120p footage has me thinking about the A1. Will be back for more videos......thank you
Thank you very much Shadd really appreciate it 😊🙏 I like the A74 a lot but I got it as a 2nd backup camera but i would never give up my A1 for it. They are on 2 completely different levels. I also love the 4k 120p its what I use most of the time .
I don't give a crap about the camera; as long as you make these awesome photos you are already made and watching you have fun doing it is what matters. I use N, C and S. Going out there making the images and processing; i pray that enjoyment only gets bigger for you.
Photographing with the A1 last week and really noticed the EVF switch in sunlight. I had not encountered this before quite disconcerting photographing the Dipper and missed a few shots, only in bright sunlight, a paucity of that around here recently ( probably why it hasn't effected me before } ! No problem with battery life the way I use it ! Used the 200-600, 100-400 and the 600mm f4 on the Dippers last week. My best shots were with the 200-600 A1 combo ! Awesome video Sam 👍😍
Thank you very much Mark appreciate it 🙂🙏 I found since making this video keeping the viewfinder sensor away (by pointing it dow ) from direct sunlight fixed the issue at least as a workaround . The battery life is good but its definitely not as good as my other Sony cameras. Thank you again for your support and feedback Mark !!!
Great photos and video footage Sam I’ve got the a9 2 and I’ve only had it for a month I’ve been using it with the Sony 100,- 400 GMaster I like it but Im already thinking of trading it in with my A7 111 and getting the A1 everything Im seeing and hearing is mind blowing so I think I will take the plunge and get it I love taking shots of wildlife, keep up the good work Regards Nigel . UK
Hi Nigel !!! thank you very much for watching and feedback !!! If you decide to get the A1 you will absolutely love it !!! The camera does everything really well, one of the best purchases camera wise I ever made,
Great photos. I’m having a little bit of trouble with my 200-600mm on the a1, with focusing. I need to take a look at the settings and see what I need to change.
Great review Sam. I have the A1 too and agree with what you have said. The one thing I have not experienced is the EV shut-out but I have heard others have experienced it. Hopefully I dont encounter it or continue whatever it is I am doing. But 200% agree with everything. I have noticed the battery drain and bought an extra battery just to keep around
Thank you very much Alvin really appreciate it 🙂🙏 Glad you are not having the EvF issue it can get annoying when you miss a shot because of it. Like it said it only really happens in bright sunny days and not all the time.
Great Video!!! I've watched alot of related videos, but this was so good, and with your talent you really have the photographs that show what can be done! Your images are so beautiful and the detail was great! That's what I wanted to see! Thank you. What changes do you make compared to the defaults in Topaz Denoise?
Thank you so much really appreciate that😊🙏 Topaz has actually changed quite a bit since I made that video. It now has a RAW option that I use all the time and I leave most of the settings on default. Sometimes I will reduce the sharpening as Topaz tends to over sharpen sometimes.
Good review getting straight to the pros and cons right off the bat summarizing them. Thanks for sharing your honest opinions. Love the Rodney Dangerfield impression by the way.
Great video!!! I just got a used a9 that was in mint condition! I am so in love with it! So for anyone that can't afford a a1 the Sony a9 is still a beautiful, beautiful alternative!!! Lol so in two or 3 years maybe I will be getting the a1 but for now I am crazy about the a9!!!! Thanks for the video! I can't wait to see your next one!!!👍👍👍
Thank you so much Marvin !!! 🙂🙏 You are absolutely correct the A9 is a great alternative if the A1 wasn't in your current budget or if you didn't need all. the video features. I love the A9 its an incredible camera, was hands down my favorite camera of all time until I got the A1. You are going to absolutely love the A9, lots of luck with it, thank you for watching and all your support 🙏
Hey Sam great video thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm with you when it comes to RUclips camera reviews, its a bit like top gear reviewing cars and saying they don't drift well, 99% of people will never drift it!! Your reviews are part of why I subscribed, along with your great photos. I may buy an A1 at some point but as you know I have only just swapped to Sony from Canon. I like the Lightroom part of the video always helpful to other's workflows. If you don't know you can press I key on the keyboard when you're working on the photo and it will give you all the metadata, which is sometimes good to see. Love all your photos but the 2 pics at 19:06 stood out for me. I will do a review of your channel at some point soon, I think it would be useful for my subscribers to sub to your channel. Keep up the good work..
Thank you very much Rich I really appreciate that and all your support 😊🙏🏻 Glad you enjoyed the Lightroom part, wasn’t sure if it was going to bore people lol Thanks for the tip I didn’t know that 👍Hope all is well stay safe 🙏🏻
@@SamRino cool.. all well here thank you. I have been busy out with my Sony 200-600 and making vids. New vids coming to my channel soon. 👍🏻 stay safe my friend.
Thank you so much appreciate that !!! 🙂🙏 Yeah it seems some people have not experienced it. It doesn't happen all the time its happened maybe like 4-5 times in about a month so its not a huge issue but when it does happen it can get very annoying. Glad your setup is not effected 🙏 Thank you again for the support !!!
Thank you for watching and feedback !!! yeah It has happened to me before with other cameras and cleaning the eye sensor would fix it but this is not the case in this camera unfortunately its a bug.
Lol thank you so much Evan !!! 🙂🙏 Raptors can only attack pretty much when they pounce on you from above, little birds know that so they are not afraid of them when they are perched.
Sam do you ever find the A1 over heats when shooting 4k video? I want to shoot air shows so would be shooting 5 to 10 minute clips throughout an 8 hour period resulting in 1.5 hours total video. Would it overheat. I have the money together to buy this kit now so ready to place an order soon. Just waiting to see if R7 gets annouced this month as I am a Canon shooter right now.
Hi David !!! I have not had any overheating issues in 4K 120p or 60p but most of my clips are fairly short for wildlife. There is a setting in the menu called “Auto power off temp “that needs to be changed to high setting from standard so camera doesn’t shut off when shooting. it’s set super low as a precaution out of the box. From all reports I saw and my own experience setting it to high has not caused any issues or damage to camera. Hope that helps 😊let me know if you have any other questions
Thank you very much James 😊🙏🏻Yes all the videos and stills were shot handheld I rarely ever use a tripod . I like the freedom and mobility of handholding .
Thank you very much !!! You mean when did Sony do a new screen for the A7r3 and A7r4 ? They released new models with updated screens around same time the A1 came out in March they called them A7r3a and A7r4a they are considered a new model.
Hello Sam.. I mentioned before that I really respect your opinions and think you are one of the most honest and reliable persons on RUclips.. I need your advise, A1 + 200-600 lens, is it a good combination? I have the lens and A9, do you believe A1 is a real upgrade?
Hi Waleed and thank you very much really appreciate that !!! I do believe the A1 is definitely a big upgrade to the A9, you get higher frame rate, ability to crop in on photos (50 megapixels ) , bird eye AF, slightly faster and more accurate AF, 4K60 and 4k 120p video. A1 + 200-600 is a fantastic combo and works really well. I am extremally happy with my A1 , I believe it is the best camera out currently hands down .
@@SamRino Thank u. As usual fast response and honest advices. With A7R4 the noise was very annoying because of the 61 megapexels sensor. Should I getting worried with the 51 megapexels sensor of the A1 as well?
Thank you for watching and your feedback Fabrice !!! I do have mine set to standard already, I still find it to consume more battery life than the A9 and A7r4 especially when I am doing video. Its not a huge issue though I just wanted to point out it wasn't as good as my previous Sony cameras that were excellent.
Wow, really great pictures Sam. Congratulations. Thanks for this video. Most pics are with F7.1. Is it because of the sharpens of big birds or is there an other reason?
Absolutely fantastic stills and video ! Were you shooting Aperture Priority with Auto ISO ? I noticed such a wide variety of shutter speeds and ISO. I too have this rig. Thanks !
Thank you very much Bill really appreciate it !!!🙂🙏 I don't use Aperture priority, I shoot in manual with auto ISO and I use exposure compensation to dial in exposure. I like to control my shutter speed and apreture depending on the situation. That's why you see a wide variety of shutter and ISO. Thank you again for your support and feedback !!!
Great camera, thx for the video! 👍🏻 did you notice a delayed stabilization of the sensor while taking photos or videos? there is a lot of discussion about this right now ...
As an award-winning pro photojournalist for over 44 years in the business who used integrated grip Canon 1DX and Nikon D5 cameras, I am really happy that Sony didn't go that route and make the A1 a heavy brick. I miss nothing about those heavy bricks. I like the option of using or not using a grip and saving weight when I can. No integrated grip cameras for me EVER again. I dont need the A1 to look like a Canon 1DX or Nikon D5. Just need it to perform and it does. Thanks for your efforts. FYI I have A1, A7RIV and A7SIII. Cheers
Hi Gerald appreciate your feedback . I guess this subject is subjective we all have our preferences. Keep in mind most people shooting this camera will most likely have a large lens attached to it shooting wildlife and sports. But I wasn't necessarily meaning to make it like a heavy brick I guess my point was more just make it a little different better built camera. I have to disagree that they didn't go that route because they were concerned about weight or size, I think using the same exact parts from the Sony A9ii, A7r4, and A7siii saves them a ton of money. Proof of that is they even used the same exact LCD that does not make the camera any heavier or bulkier. Everyone has a preference honestly about this I asked many people some agree with you, some agree with me. One thing we both agree on though and that honestly is the most important thing is the camera performs excellent and exceeded my expectations in performance :) Thank you again for watching and your honest feedback !!!
@@SamRino Sorry you are wrong here. I have spoken directly to Sony managers and they say the company's core build philosophy is to keep the size and weight down at all costs. They want the best performance but not with the traditional heavy weight and huge size of other makers. They believe that is one of the key assets that separates them from the rest and they won't abandon that philosophy. And I am glad of that. FYI, I have used all the biggest lenses from Nikon, Canon and Sony shooting pro sports and wildlife for four decades and I still dont need that integrated grip all the time. Having the choice is still the best direction for me. Never going back to that integrated grip, and never going to buy another camera that forces that on me, sorry. Cheers
Hi Gerald !!! I totally respect your feedback and your opinion on this. But saying I am wrong is not totally correct, Its an opinion of me saying I think this camera should stand out then all the other cameras since it cost twice as much. I am not saying it has to be a huge brick , just make it stand out to feel like you bought a flagship camera. Also Sony is never going to admit that they use the same exact parts on all 3 cameras to keep cost down as much as possible. Wanting to keep the size down...ok I get that .......but why does it have to be the same exact chassis and way outdated LCD that has nothing to do with size at all. This camera should of had an updated LCD and better build than the rest of the line that cost half as much. But again I love the camera performance so honestly it was just an opinion I still absolutely love the performance of the camera its not really bothering me too much, it was just an opinion I was expressing. I think part of this is my fault I shouldn't of listed that in the negatives of the camera but stated it was my opinion . Thank you again Gerald , always appreciate your feedback and intelligent conversation. Stay safe :)
@@SamRino it does have a better weatherproof build, and you don't know how many parts are new like the processor and sensor and all, and how many parts are shared with other cameras, you are just speculating. When you have a youtube channel you have a responsibility to tell the truth IMHO. I personally don't need it to look any different, it is a tool not a trophy. As long as it does the amazing things it does, I am happy I can share the same feel and battery grip with my A7RIV and A7SIII. Yes it should have the better LCD and now that the A7RIVa does, this A1 should also. But the 9+million dot EVF with 240fps refresh rate is far more important for most pro shooters like myself. .Cheers, I am a subscriber and I appreciate your efforts. Stay safe.
@@SamRino You’re welcome. Maybe in the future you can have a video tutorial on how to use your A1 for bird photography and also how to upload high quality photos on Instagram…😅 thank you in advance. Keep it up! Just subscribed…
For sure I will do more videos on the A1 showing different focus modes and what I use. As far as instagram, all my pictures I post on there I process exactly how I showed in this video the in the Lightroom segment ( 09:49 Lightroom session ) I put it through Topaz Denoise. Then adjust a few sliders in Lightroom that's all I do :)
@@jbdlr13 No i just post as is from lightroom. sometimes i will crop in app a little more because most people are viewing it on a phone. You can check out my Instagram page at samrinophotography
When I wear light weight gloves in the winter I was bumping my lens release button all the time on my a7R IV. I was left holding the disconnected lens in my left hand many times. Scared the crap out of me. I wish they put that release in a different place.
Hi !!! thank you for watching and feedback !!! Very strange I never encountered that issue on any of my Sony cameras wearing gloves . I have heard from a couple of people that it happened to them a couple of times. Thank you again for feedback
Thank you very much appreciate it Frank !!! Most of these pics are from down south jersey salt water marshes and shore area. Most taken during May some in late April.
The reason for not build in a vertikal grip is to keep the camera stealthy and compact. Many of us want the performance of A1 and do not want extra size camera house. The A1 design choise is relevant for many photographers but not for all. So far no other camera manufakturer had been able to provide this type of performance, let alone in a stealthy body without heat problems.
I guess it's a matter of choice. I don't think putting a grip on camera would make it less stealthy when you have a huge white lens attached to it . Also I think without the grip the camera is unbalanced with big lenses. But I understand everyone has a preference. If you ask 10 people I bet you get a split answer. There is no denying the performance is excellent but saying it was design choice though doesn't make sense. This is not a new design it's the same exact body as all the other Sony cameras made since the A7r4, it was made with this body to keep cost down by using the same parts. Also the LCD on camera should of been updated to the higher resolution one. Thank you for watching and appreciate your feedback 🙂
@@SamRino if your only use case is static with long white lenses then you might as well have a vertical grip buildt in. But as soon as you have other use cases its often an advantage for many to keep it small and light. Its not a coincidence Sonys compact FF are the best sellers.
@@martinsillen5998 I understand but you have to understand this is subjective. If you look at the comments in this video and other videos there is people that agree with me. So what appeals to you might not appeal to someone else that wants a more robust balanced camera flagship camera :) But the bottom line its a fantastic camera and the design is not the most important to me its performance and we agree there. :) Thank you again for the feedback 👍
I agree with you that it is subjective to like large or small cameras. I reacted to that you hinted they chose to not have vertical grip buildt in to save money. Its rather the opposite. Its more costly to develop high performance in compact performance. In fact most camera companies cant do this performance in such compact format.
Awesome video Sam! Just got my a1 last week. Do you shoot zone for birds in flight or tracking medium spot for example? I'm messing around with the focus area modes but wondering what you find the best. Thanks!
Thank you very much Chris appreciate it 🙂🙏 I used zone for the majority of these pics. I never liked any of the tracking modes on previous Sony cameras. I always thought it was too slow and loses focus on BIF and action. But with the A1 I find tracking works much better and I started using it sometimes( still testing ) but I still mostly use zone. I plan on doing an update video on the A1 I will talk about focus modes I use, also updates on issues and some things I forgot to talk about in first video.
@@SamRino Thank you for the quick response! I was thinking if you could share with us a settings video that would be awesome. Whenever you post a new video I'm right there! Great work and take care.
No problem Chris, I really appreciate the feedback it helps me know what videos to work on that people want to see. Will definitely work on a A1 settings video. I am in middle of few jobs and projects I am working on right now but will definitely do it as time permits. Thank you again.
Thanks a lot for that review. I must say that I have issue with this lens coupled with my R4 (sharpness and focus, even with manual focus at 1/4000 on almost none moving subject as soon as I reach 600mm) and I was wondering if the A1 would solve the problem
Thank you very much !!! There is been reported compatibility issues with that combo for sure. When I was shooting that combo I was able to get good results but it definitely took a lot of work and a lot of experimenting. It was definitely a very difficult combo to shoot that I found myself shooting my A9 at the time a lot more. The A1 pairs much better with the 200-600 then the A7r4 I can assure you that.
Great shots Sam and, thanks for sharing your experiences of the A1. I picked up on your comments regarding Topaz DeNoise, would you recommend turning off the camera’s own noise reduction?
Thank you very much Mikey appreciate it 😊🙏🏻 if you are shooting in raw the option for noise reduction in camera is not available. If shooting in jpeg , I would turn it off and use topaz instead I believe it will do a better job. But my recommendation is shoot in raw and use topaz it will give you more control over your pictures as far as recovering shadows and detail. hope that helps 😊🙏🏻
Hey Sam Another really nice video, you did great with the A7RIV and now even better with this one. Love your videos! Keep em coming! I had the A9II and the 200-600 previously and i really stubbed my toes on that combination. Coming from the D850 and the 200-500 i found the files on the Sony setup lacking details, but that may have been the sensor and not the lens. I am really contemplating buying into the A1 + 200-600 system, but doing so would require quite a total investment in all the other sony lenses i would also need. In that regard I have a request for you. Is it possible for you to upload some sample raw files from this combination that we can play around with to test the cropping capabilities etc. ? It's not gotta be any sellable images or anything spectacular but just some samples to play around with in lightroom. Thank you - Lasse
Hi Lasse, Thank you very much !!! yeah with the A9 its all about the speed in AF and frame rate. With almost half the megapixels of the D850 you are going to notice a big difference in detail. Shooting the A9 taught me to get as close as possible to my subjects, something I still apply to the A1. I can send you a couple of raw files just email me at rino2135@gmail.com Thank you again for your support. !!!
Great work as usual.. I have a7riv and 200-600, and I'm not sure if it is really a misfit combination or it is my bad technique.. Any advices? I'm asking you in particular because you are the only one gives an honest and clear reviews and I saw you in an earlier video disgree with theat claim..
Thank you very much Waleed !!! 🙂🙏 It's a tough combo to shoot but I was able to get good results when I had that combo. 3 things might help. 1 is try shooting in higher shutter speed, that camera with the high megapixel sensor requires higher shutter speed than normal especially shooting at 600mm. Most of the bad results are due to shake and motion blur . That camera at 61 megapixels will exaggerate that if technique is not sound and not shooting at higher shutter speed. 2: make sure if you are following birds in flight you are using a minimum of 2500-4000 shutter speed and make sure stabilization on lens is set to position 2, 3, or off. Position 1 can actually cause motion blur when panning or following action.Shooting at high shutter speed will cause extra noise, I used Topaz Denoise to handle it. 3: Make sure you have the latest firmware, it does improve performance. Hope those things help.
@@SamRino WOW.. I really appreciate taking from your time to give me this detailed reply.. I usually use 1/2500 at least so, I will try 1/3200 or even 1/4000 I will also try the different stabilisation modes The firmware is the latest, I believe..i will double check again.. Then, what is next investing in another lens or going to a9.. this is an extra cost for me for sure but using that combo is really made me disappointed. Note: I can't afford a1, a9ii nor 600 prime lens.. Greetings and thanks
No problem glad I can help !!! The original A9 is a hell of a deal and much easier to shoot . You can pickup really clean used ones for a good price. The A9 focus is fantastic and a joy to shoot. The good thing is most people shoot the A9 with the electronic shutter to get the 20fps so very little wear and tear on the camera since not using mechanical shutter . (moving parts ) . I enjoyed having both cameras as they compliment each other. The A7r4 when i need to crop and not too much action and the A9 for the bif and action. To be honest though I found myself reaching for the A9 more often . It was definitely my favorite camera until I got the A1. The A6600 is a good option as well if you want go crop sensor but I personally don't like the compact feel of the body. For lens option you can get the 100-400 GM as it will be easier to shoot with the A7r4 at 400mm (less shake/motion blur at 400mm ) and slightly faster AF motor then the 200-600.
I have an A7RIV and an A9. Of the two I prefer the A9 (I have original version). My experience is like Sam's, I find the A9 autofocus is much better with 200-600 for birds in flight. Just got my A1 and so far couldn't be happier. Faster and more accurate auto focus than A9 (which is really outstanding), higher frame rate and ability to crop 50 MP files is fantastic. I also second recommendation for Topaz Denoise.
Also do you have any of the Ibis issues that are being mentioned at the moment ,I have the money and am ready to buy but a bit put off by the recent mention of this issue
I know the issue exists for some people so its real. For majority of my photos I turn Ibis off as I tend to shoot very high shutter speed. But when I do turn it on for video I have not experienced any long delay for it to kick in as some people are reporting. Not sure if only some serial numbers are effected. I will do more testing and update in future videos. I know Gerald Undone(great technical channel ) also said he has not experienced any delays with the ibis kicking in, so it must be only some cameras effected or possibly combined with certain lenses.
Hello Sam, I understood that the A1 has different monitors one is worse for Touch and was exchanged on pressure of the users. Nowthere are different good monitors on the A1, or have I misunderstood? have I confused this with the A7R4/A7R3?
Hi !!! I am not aware of any different back screens on the A1 as of right now. I know with the A7r3 and A7r4 they upgraded the back screen and rereleased the cameras as new models named A7r3a and A7r4a.
Wow!! come on no complain brother you have a Sony A1!! however you are right at least for the flagship models Sony should have done some gold dipping!! jokes aside, 🤣🤣🤣🤣beautiful photos!!
Thank you very much Roy appreciate it 🙂🙏 The entire video and photos were all shot on the 200-600, except for the Vlog that was all shot on the GoPro Hero 9. I do not own the 600 F4 yet(future purchase ) and I sold my 100-400 a while back. The camera performs really well with the 200-600 as you can see, its not perfect there are the occasional dropped shots but that's expected.
You don’t notice the problem with the lens release button when the grip is on. I almost dropped my 600 f4 by accidentally pressing the button. Be very careful when you have gloves on. The button is just on the wrong side of the camera. It’s a design flaw with all Sony a cameras.
Hi Marco thank you for watching and Your feedback .The button is in the same spot as the A9ii, A7r4,A7siii I never heard(except for (Nothrup's video) or experienced that issue before. I been shooting Sony cameras with the grip for about 4 years it has never happened to me with any of my Sony cameras, even wearing gloves . Not saying it hasn't happened to you, I just never experienced that myself. But I would imagine if it was happening a lot you would see a million videos and people posting about it all over the forums. Thank you again Marco for feedback.
With higher performance machine it will require more battery. Just like your car, same gas tank but if you step on it more often the gas gauge will go down quicker 😁
Hi Ken thank you for watching !!! appreciate the feedback. I am not sure if the same thing applies to cameras but I get your point higher resolution viewfinder, 30fps, 4k 120. I just wanted to make people aware battery life is not what is usually expected from other Sony cameras :)
The EVF blackout is a deal breaker for me and is keeping me from buying one. My a9ii does it sometimes and it's infuriating to me. From what I gather the a1 is worse because of the EVF sensor location. For a $6500 camera they need to fix the issue asap.
Hi RaY thank you for watching and feedback !!! ITs honestly not that big deal its happened maybe 4-5 times since I got. I also just keep the view finder away not pointed up on bright sunny days and it hasn't happened again. The performance of the camera is amazing so for me it wasn't a dealbreaker, but I certainly understand if you want wait until a they fix the issue its a lot of money. With previous Sony cameras like the A9ii the EVF blackouts was caused by the viewfinder sensor being dirty or smudged usually. Thats the only time it happened to me on my A9 or A7r4. Thank you again for watching and feedback !!!
@@SamRino Yes, I'm aware of keeping the sensor clean and honestly it's only happened 4-5 times to me as well. However it is infuriating when it happens! It's sounding like the a1 is worse but maybe it isn't really. I've learned to be aware of how I'm holding the cam so it doesn't too happen often anymore. The a1 does look like a killer camera though. I think I'll wait for them to upgrade the firmware 1-2 iterations before I take the plunge. All new cameras have their bugs that need to be ironed out. Great video BTW. Liked and Subbed!
Thank you so much for the sub Ray !!! If you can wait and in no rush I would wait to see the bugs worked out. For me I was about to buy the A7siii before they announced the A1 because I really wanted the 4k 120P and 4k 60P. I also really hated switching cameras and carrying more then 1 camera. So it made sense for me to buy it now instead of putting money into the A7sii. Thank you again for your feedback and support 🙏
Hey, I got a new 2021 made A7R IVa and ive had the view finder not change over a few times. Not a big problem but I did miss a couple shots, has to do it in a tense shooting situation doesn't it haha
Of course never fails lol 😂 Just curious if they moved the eye sensor location on the new A7r4 I never really had that issue with the old A7r4 except when the eye sensor had a smudge or was dirty. Thank you very much for watching appreciate it 😊🙏🏻
I am not watching this for your review but for the very good pictures. So my only complaint is about the music. It's too synthetic and not supporting the value of your images and the nature they present (imo).
Have to disagree with your built in grip comment. I for one am very very happy that it does not have the built in grip! I prefer a smaller camera 99% of the time!
Thank you for watching and feedback !!! I guess I just meant I wanted the camera to standout in some way from the rest of the line not so much the grip. . But i love the performance of the camera so thats the most important really
Hola !!!
@@SamRino hahaha I'll make it easier for you. I was asking you, just in case I wanted to record something more amateur in a resolution more compatible with any equipment. Knowing that in 1080p you can record at 240fps comforts me, very good video, I know little English but I understood you very well. Hopefully I can get it in my country at a good price.
Hi thanks for watching appreciate it. It is 50 megapixels vs 24 on the A9/A9ii so its going to be noisier but you are also getting a lot more detail . But it handles the noise just fine as you can see if you put it through topaz or any good noise reduction. To be honest I could of left the pictures as is they would looked just fine with a little grain. I just like cleaning them up in topaz. Its definitely not as noisy as the A7r4 but then again that's 61 megapixels. You are always going to get a noisier picture as you go up in megapixels. Noise is really not an issue.
@@SamRino Thank you, just wanted to know in comparison to A7RIV. By the way i have seen the youtuber who claimed the lens release as a disadvantage, thanks for clearing that part. :D
No problem yeah its definitely not as noisy as the A7r4 and takes noise reduction really well. Yeah the lens release thing has not happened to me once, I honestly think he was trying to create things wrong so he can call his review "shocking" to get more clicks.
Dear Sam, thank you for making this informative video. I have these questions: Did you use the 600 end of your range a lot? And did you have any issues with tracking? Are some of your shots part of a burst of shots? And if you tracked, did you use the bird eye priority while tracking? I took my camera into the wilderness with a 100-400, and I had these issues with BIF. The birds were generally far and shy and when they took off, it was away from me! The tracking tried hard but many times the focus would be somewhere off the bird. With mammals and stationary bird I had excellent results. Looking forward to hearing your take on my experiences
Thank you very much Turgay appreciate it !!! the majority of the shots I took at 600mm . I used primarily Zone focus mode with bird eye AF engaged. I had no issues tracking at all . There is no way to set Bird eye af to priority. The camera defaults to it if it recognizes the birds eye, if not it defaults to your focus mode. Try using plain zone (not tracking )instead of tracking on far way subjects, It's also possible the subject is too far for the focus to find subject, hard to tell without being there. One important thing for BIF you want to set your focus limiter not to full but 3mm to infinity that will speed up your Af a lot, and stabilization set to mode 2 not 1 as that can cause motion blur. . Hope that helps let me know if you have any other questions !!! Thank you for watching and your support !!!
@@SamRino Dear Sam, thank you for your informative response. I will now send you a long description of my experience that I wrote to Mark Galer just yesterday. It comes in two parts. Here is the first half: Turgay Uzer 2 days ago This will be a follow-up on my earlier comment on using the alpha in Zambia, this time on birds. I apologize for the length of the comment but I really want to use the abilities of the camera to the full and whenever I could, the results are spectacular! I should preface my observations by saying that I did not attempt flying bird photography before buying this camera, and there is room for improvement on my panning skills! I was shooting with the 100-400 gmaster lens which ranges between f stops 4.5 and 5.6. These being wild birds, they are generally shy (i.e., far) and they take off erratically -- they usually fly away from you. My better results came from focussing on a perched bird and track ( at the Hi+ setting and release) after they take off. I noticed that the tracking does require a frame or two to find and stick to the flying bird(using wide area). After a few tries, I turned off face/eye recognition because it was futile with such small subjects. Eagles were the slowest, requiring 1/1600 or faster (slower when they are landing, btw). The tracking
@@SamRino Here is the second half: when they are landing, btw). The tracking generally stayed on the bird but wandered from body to wingtips and sometimes to the sky. Very poor results for eagles landing in nest inside foliage (hardly surprising). The focus was often on the background. Lilac-breasted rollers (the most photographed birds in Africa): Very challenging. At shutter speed 1/3200 the images were clear but it took the bird only 15 frames to get out of range (disappear in the foliage). That's less than a second at Hi+. Surprisingly, the tracking tried to keep up and the focus area was generally somewhere on the bird. Finally, bee-eaters and pygmy kingfishers are the fastest, requiring faster than 1/3200. Their excursions from their perch are usually over in fractions of a second). Most of the time, the tracking did not keep up although I did manage to keep the bird in the frame. I ended up with a few usable frames but I ascribe that to luck.
@@SamRino I'd love to hear your take on the experience. It was really like you described: It finds the eye on a tiny kingfisher, but sometimes not on an eagle which is closer. Btw, it also has trouble finding an eye on an elephant. İ have checked this with another wildlife photographer and he confirmed it saying that since the head of an elephant is unusual, the AI has trouble identifying an eye. In such situations I guided the focus to the eye by touch operation. Same with a leopard since the spots look like eyes to the AI. Many thanks for your time
Great review and shots Sam, glad you like it, it’s an awesome camera for sure, I mainly do small fast BIF and I find the extra MP over my A9 very helpful, @mykelphotography7 on Insta if your on it? I am yet to use it for video, I have to agree with you too on the flagship feel, and more important was not putting the new screen on it, very disappointing, love how ya are serving up a certain You-tuber comments, makes me giggle.
Thank you very much Mick !!! I am on instagram @samrinophotography will definitely look you up !!! Definitely the extra megapixels giving me the ability to crop and the video features are what won me over the A9 which used to be my favorite camera. Lol the lens releasing by accident thing he was claiming even had my cousin that knows nothing about photography calling me saying " hey you know that camera you preordered you told me about, this guy on RUclips is saying it has a huge issue with the lens falling off the camera all the time " and I started laughing and shaking my head 😂
@@SamRino lol yes and that’s the problem with these people, false information goes out there, taking pictures of nothing related to what the camera is intended for and getting a review out as quick as they can is a joke, and don’t get me started on the flippy screen thing!
Topaz is great for noisy backgrounds but it leaves all sorts of artefacts on fine feather detail. All the zippering and staircase artefacts, its clumping pixels together and ruining all that resolution we pay for in cameras. I've tried to love it but I genuinely feel it's overrated.
@@SamRino I'm a pixel peeper unfortunately! What I do which some other yohtubers do is just let topaz work on the background and mask it out the subject itself. This is the reason topaz added the masking feature on a recent update, because of all the people taking this step. If you zoom right in on some of your files you should be able to see what I'm talking about. It's when you crop and then do a decent sized print that the problem rears it's ugly head and becomes more than merely a pixel peepers issue. Got my A1 yesterday, now it's a month wait for the 600 f4.!
@@markrigg6623 I got lucky my local store had 600F4 in stock when I went in to order it. I believe it was an order for someone that cancelled. I am usually a pixel peeper as well and very picky but have not noticed it, I will have to look again. Thanks again for feedback hope you get your lens soon !!!
Sorry to say .... Sam This is no serious review and your images are just .... well , not that great . IMHO . For my personal view .... for all who believe your option counts , go for it . Cheers Andreas
No worries Andreas, Sorry to say....I can't please everyone. Not sure what your view is of a "serious review" is. but I did state in the very beginning of the video what kind of review this was, so it if it wasn't what your looking for not to waste your time.. My point of view is showing you what the combo can do in real life shooting wildlife. Sorry if you don't like my images, but I would love to see your images. Also there is plenty of reviews already that give you specs that you can research yourself, shoot walls , tulips and pixel peep. Thank you for watching anyway appreciate it.....take care
I totally agree with your point regarding these kids who borrow the lens/gear and put out a video just to put out a video and have not done the ground work as far as really getting to know the gear. I’ve had camera bodies and lenses that took months to fully “get to know.”
I’m hoping Sony will fix these issues when they finally release the next lot of bodies.
Your review feels real and genuine. Keep it like that. Thanks, Sam.
The photos and videos are awesome and real as usual.
Thank you so much Enayetur appreciate it 🙂🙏 I can assure I won't change !!!
Thanks for an honest review, Sam 👍
Thank you very much for watching appreciation it 😊🙏
wow man i have just purchased that set up a week ago to take on vacation ! first i want to say man great pics and i have the a7riv ,and you have nailed a great description couldnt have said it better keep up the good content man loved the video
Thank you very much Rocky really appreciate it and congrats on your new setup !!!😊🙏
Great review. Honest with no bs.
Thank you very much Damon appreciate it 😊🙏
Great review. Thanks for confirming the 200-600 works well on the A1. I am going to buy this setup soon.
Thank you very much David glad you enjoyed it !!! 😊🙏You will love this setup !!! Btw a lot of the issues I spoke about were fixed by firmware .
Hello Sam. I don't know much about cameras 📷 today I learned something. (I think).. Although I enjoy watching your videos more, I think you have a unique talent.. Thank you for so much dedication. which is what makes us get to know the wild world more closely. .

Fantastic review and fantastic shots thank you
Thank you so much Julian really appreciate it 😊🙏
First time seeing one of your videos.
Thank you very much appreciate it !!!
Moving from low rev A7iii to A1. The first thing I notice using A1 is how much noise you get even in fairly low iso. Topez help alot.
Hi !!! Yes you definitely need Topaz with a high megapixel camera !! Thank you for watching !!!🙂🙏
Wonderfull video! Thats really Nice! Thanks for sharing !
Thank you very much really appreciate it glad you enjoyed it 😊🙏🏻
Great Video!!!
Excellent review!

Make more video because the quality of your observation is great Btw for me no problem with EVF or Ibis yet.
I experienced the same EVF problem with my G9. I found keeping the eye sensor clean solved the problem.
Thank you for watching and feedback !!! yeah It has happened to me before with other cameras and cleaning the eye sensor would fix it but this is not the case in this camera unfortunately its a bug.
Wow those were some crazy good shots. I'm surprised the osprey didn't chase those little black birds down and take a bite out of them lol
Great video, I’m guessing it was but can you confirm all your video clips were handheld?
Thank you very much James 😊🙏🏻Yes all the videos and stills were shot handheld I rarely ever use a tripod . I like the freedom and mobility of handholding .
hi thanks for the Video, please can you tell me when Sony changed the Monitor ?
Thank you very much !!! You mean when did Sony do a new screen for the A7r3 and A7r4 ? They released new models with updated screens around same time the A1 came out in March they called them A7r3a and A7r4a they are considered a new model.
You got me laughing pretty good when you said , got to sell a kidney! Great photos. 3rd vid in a row . Happy shooting.

great video Sam, maybe set a button to switch from evf to screen never miss a shot and save battery life .
Thank you very much Joe !!! Actually Sony released new firmware yesterday that fixes most issues including the Evf problem
@@SamRino
Thank u. As usual fast response and honest advices.
With A7R4 the noise was very annoying because of the 61 megapexels sensor. Should I getting worried with the 51 megapexels sensor of the A1 as well?
While its not as noisy as the A7r4, it can get noisy if you push the ISO high but Topaz denoise AI fixes that real easy .
@@SamRino thanks a million..🌹🌹
No problem anytime !!! 😊🙏🏻

Thank you very much 🙂🙏
I had the same issue with the battery life. I solved it by changing the "Finder Frame Rate" to Standard (Setup > Finder/Monitor)
Thank you very much appreciate it !!! I shoot in 7.1 a lot with the 200-600 i feel its the sweet spot for sharpness with that lens in my experience .
Yeah mine's a bit soft at F 6.3.

Thank you very much appreciate it 🙂🙏 I saw some people reporting that issue, I have not personally experienced it.
That was incredible footage and photos..I have to save my pennies to buy this camera..

Stay safe.
Wow! Great pictures…
Thank you very much JB appreciate it 🙂🙏
@@SamRino You’re welcome.
@@SamRino That would be great. Oh so you don’t resize the pictures to Instagrams recommendation of 1350x1080px?

When I wear light weight gloves in the winter I was bumping my lens release button all the time on my a7R IV. I was left holding the disconnected lens in my left hand many times. Scared the crap out of me. I wish they put that release in a different place.
Hi !!! thank you for watching and feedback !!! Very strange I never encountered that issue on any of my Sony cameras wearing gloves . I have heard from a couple of people that it happened to them a couple of times. Thank you again for feedback
Great footage / pictures. In which region an period of time you shoot these?
Could be one of my next holiday goals.
Thanks
Thank you very much appreciate it Frank !!! Most of these pics are from down south jersey salt water marshes and shore area. Most taken during May some in late April.
I was wondering why I haven't come across your videos in the past. Subscribed so I can join you on your adventures!
Thank you so much JBA really appreciate that !!! Thank you for subscribing and your support 🙂🙏
@@SamRino thank you so much for this answer! I’ll look forward to it!
Hey Sam
Another really nice video, you did great with the A7RIV and now even better with this one.
Thank you
- Lasse
Hi Lasse, Thank you very much !!! yeah with the A9 its all about the speed in AF and frame rate. With almost half the megapixels of the D850 you are going to notice a big difference in detail. Shooting the A9 taught me to get as close as possible to my subjects, something I still apply to the A1. I can send you a couple of raw files just email me at rino2135@gmail.com
Thank you again for your support. !!!
Can you do a video on the setting you use for the A1?
Yep no problem, it's definitely in my plans to do a settings video of how I use the camera for wildlife. Thank you for the feedback.
@@SamRino
WOW..
I really appreciate taking from your time to give me this detailed reply..
I usually use 1/2500 at least so, I will try 1/3200 or even 1/4000
I will also try the different stabilisation modes
The firmware is the latest, I believe..i will double check again..

No ibis issue on my A1. Tested it on several lenses. Serial 377....
Thank you so much really appreciate it 😁🙏🏻
Hi Great content well presented, you have a new subscriber. Were all these taken with the 200-600?
Sorry, I meant to say that it happened to me when I held my camera without the grip. Since I have the grip attached, no problems.
@@SamRino don’t forget, the A1 calculates 120 times prior every shot as well 😉 every single shot even with 30fps

Una pregunta, tiene video en 1080p a 120fps??
Hola !!!

Can I take it as A1 does not handle high ISO noise as good as the A9/A9II?
Hi Mark thank you for feedback !!! I have not had any issues with it that i noticed. Have you found an alternative ?
Sam
This is no serious review and your images are just .... well , not that great .
So ein schlechtes Angebervideo schon lange nicht mehr gesehen.
