Is Gender a Social Construct? in 7 Minutes

  • Gender is a very touchy subject these days - whether you believe it's a social construct or you don't. Both sides of the argument seem to overlook evidence on the opposing view. In this short video I'll go over some of the main arguments and evidence that both support the idea of gender as a social construct and refute it.

    Instagram: / thoughtmonkeyhq
    Summary:
In recent years many social scientists have begun to believe that gender identity is not a stable and fixed trait. They argue that it is socially constructed and can vary over time. Some have even argued that there are more than two genders and have created additional classifications by using terms such as cis-gender, transgender, gender queer, non-binary, gender fluid, agender, etc.
Anyways, the two competing ideas about whether gender is a social construct come from the familiar nature vs. nurture debate. In other words, is it our environment that makes us who we are or our biology?
Those who say gender is a social construct often argue the following:
    1. There are differences in gender norms in different cultures. For example there are subcultures in India that identify three genders. And in Chile some believe you must channel another gender to accomplish certain tasks. The list goes on. According to the academics Candace West and Don Zimmerman gender is “an emergent feature of social situations: both as an outcome of and a rationale for various social arrangements, and as a means of legitimating one of the most fundamental divisions of society" (West & Zimmerman, 1977, p. 126). By the way I looked up Candace West on Rate My Professor and she only got a 2.1 out of 5. Would you eat at a restaurant that got such a low Yelp score? I don’t think so. Old Donny didn’t do much better.
    2. Language forms our reality. The words man and woman are simply words to describe certain phenomena, but don’t describe every option or experience of all people in our culture. Phrases like “be a man” or “boys don’t cry” are used to pressure boys into conforming to traditional masculine gender roles while “run like a girl” and other women-centered phrases pressure girls into behaving in a way that is considered traditionally feminine.
Others say that gender is a feature of nature, not nurture. They say:
    1. Being exposed to testosterone and estrogen will make the way we behave inherently different. For example, there are studies that show male babies and female babies behave differently given different stimulus. Male babies tend to stare longer at mechanic objects while female babies tend to stare longer at faces which may explain why women and men tend to find themselves in different career paths -men often gravitate toward science and engineering while women toward health care and education.
    2. The reason some women and men identify as a gender opposite of their sex is because sometimes nature has hiccups. For example some female fetuses are exposed to large quantities of male hormones and develop Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia - a fancy term for a disease that may alter the sex organs of people. Also, there are members of the trans-community that believe gender is biological. Some transwomen have stated that while they were brought into this world as men, from the get go they felt biologically that they were women, and thus behaved as a woman. Their argument is that if gender was socially constructed, then as a boy who felt like a girl they would have been socially pressured into feeling like boys. However, despite being socially pressured into feeling like boys these transgender women have always felt like women despite their sex being male.
    3. A boy named David Reimar whose circumcision went horribly wrong, was given sex reassignment surgery as a 22 month year old and was raised as a girl named Brenda. Brenda was given girl toys, but always seemed to gravitate toward more traditionally boy toys. Eventually as a teenager she expressed her suicidal thoughts to her parents, and her father told her what had happened. Despite the female hormones and socialized pressures to be a girl, Brenda identified as a male and changed her name back to David when she was 14. Years later David started treatment to reverse the reassignment given to him as a 22 month year old and married a woman. Unfortunately years later after battling with a failed marriage and depression, at 38 years old he killed himself. This shows that despite the social pressures of David’s parents and doctors to identify as a girl - he still felt like a boy.

But it depends on how you are defining gender. Look:
The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).
      Gender: your biological sex.

There's people who believe that Transgender is an umbrella term. Aka that Transgender is basically being anything other than Cisgender. Rather than transitioning from one side of the binary to the other.

I think , it will be better if nobody identify to a gender and put others in cases they don't want to belong to. I mean , seriously ? who cares if you're a man or a women , if you identify as a girl or a boy. We know what we are . Focus more on human than on gender because that's why we are so divided on this society (men vs women , colored people vs white, diseable vs valid,...) we all belong to the same spiece the human spiece

Great video, but there's one small inaccuracy - David Reimer wasn't named David at birth. He was originally named 'Bruce', but was re-named 'Brenda' after the accident, and when he was told he was originally male, he then chose the name 'David' for himself. It's not a significant error, but the audience should be aware, just in case they're writing essays etc. and need accurate detail :)

It might not be the most objective site but it's not completely inaccurate in terms of how it rates professors and teachers (not to mention most people don't take the time to vote on a teacher unless they are polarized in a very positive or negative way, illustrating the effectiveness of the teaching methods being utilized).

I'd say gender roles are a mostly biological construct, because of the "different hormones => different thought processes => different behavior" argument (behavior=actions/roles).
Why do males and females have different estrogen/testosterone levels? Because that's what was best for survival, during evolution.
This is supported by the fact that other species have clearly defined gender roles (an obvious example being penguins).
I'm not saying gender roles are 100% biological, just that they're more the result of biology than society.

    • @googleisgay1555

Erik Victory Sure, but denying it invariably leads to forced gender equality (or gender communism), in which capable men are replaced with less capable women (or their salaries are reduced), simply to fit some stupid gender equality quota (just look at the law recently passed in Iceland).
Women can do whatever they want, everyone's an individual.
It's also noteworthy that women who developed with higher prenatal testosterone levels are more likely (statistically speaking) to be interested in things like engineering (how stuff works). Good for them, I'm not telling anyone what they should or shouldn't do.
I'm just sick of situations like James Damore's, where politically incorrect facts aren't allowed. It's frustratingly stupid.

    • @elizabethh.415
      @elizabethh.415 6 лет назад +3

Christobanistan No, they don't. Gender dysphoria is a neurological problem. Most likely, it's got the same underlying cause as physical intersex conditions - having the wrong hormone levels present during the time your prenatal development is taking place. If you have the wrong hormones present during the first trimester (which is when genital development is taking place) you get physical abnormalities of your genitals. If it happens during the second and/or third trimester, your brain ends up intersexed instead, since that's the main thing still undergoing development by that stage of the pregnancy.

I've recently seen this argument in this way. gender is a binary, gender expression is a spectrum. this way of thinking is based in the Idea that yes there are only two genders, but behaviors inherit to one gender or the other, can still vary from person to person.this can be expressed in an example used in your video. men typically have more upper body strength than women, however it doesn't mean that every man is going to be stronger than every women. conversely women tend to be more gentle and caring than men, but that won't stop a total role reversal in certain situations where a father may comfort a child after loosing a game, and the mother will tell the child, you need to step you game up. probably not the best example but you get what I mean right. Traits get named masculine or feminine based on which gender displays them more often, but you can be a masculine woman and an feminine man.

Actually, sex is the biological differences. Gender is the differences that the group enforces. For example, sex gives boys Y chromosomes. Gender is women wearing heels because society says that women wear heels. There's no "heels" gene. Heck, high heels used to be considered masculine because they were invented to allow horse-mounted archers to better aim without having to stop. Basically, they started out as the ancestors of today's cowboy boots before society decided that they're something women wear because butts.

So, uh, fun fact that I feel is relevant: left-handedness used to be considered evil (due to some stupid church stuff) and was heavily demonised, but that cultural stigma disappeared over the last couple centuries. Incidentally, as the stigma disappeared, there seemed to be higher percentages of left handed people.
I don’t think it’s fair to say that transgenderism is a new phenomena (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_history) when it’s been culturally oppressed for so long. People were saying that same thing about gay people back when that wasn’t socially acceptable.

You had a good presentation but your conclusion lacks any purpose. It's irresponsible to say "can't we just get along" because that ignores that people disagree.
Genders are separated because it matters. Whether gender is based on biology or social aspects isn't as important as WHY genders are separated in many organizations, such as prisons or sports teams. In these cases, genders are separate because of biological differences. For example, if women and men completed in pro sports in the same league, there is a very likely chance that bio males would dominate every record and award and playing time. Look at worlds record set in sports. Which gender comes out on top? If you put a trans man into a men's prison, the consequences would far outweigh any social liberty that "we have finally accepted trans people".
Gender was always based on sex. A boy was an immature male human. A woman was an adult human female. I have an 80s dictionary that proves this well before the Internet altered words. Social aspects of gender were results of being a certain sex, not causes.

What makes you a man or woman is sex. This is not a social construct, cannot be changed, and accounts for many differences between men and women as we receive different levels of hormones that both effect bodily development and our brains.
“Gender identity” is a relatively new concept to explain trans people, but the problem is, a lot of “cis” people do not feel a gender identity, but merely identify as a man or woman based on their biological sex. If trans people argue we must respect their identification, they need to also be able to respect the fact that not everyone feels a “gender identity”.
I don’t mind treating trans people as honorary men/women, but ultimately I don’t think anyone can make the claim they “feel like a man/woman” unless they are actually male or female, any more than you can claim, as one individual, to feel the same way another individual feels. We are not inside each other’s brains. Claiming to have a woman’s or man’s brain when you are the opposite sex is insulting. Would you claim to have a black persons brain if you aren’t black? What would that mean in terms of how you feel about black people? You would have to be assuming various stereotypes about the way black people think. I don’t see how it’s any different with gender.

  • @Charistoph
    @Charistoph 6 лет назад +26

There are several things that need to be addressed in the discussion on gender, that many people do not seem to want to address.
The social construct argument fails when someone seeks to make biological changes. The individual is seeking to alter something not connected to the situation they believe. If you want to wear a dress and makeup to feel girly, that is a social construct. Altering your genitals is not altering your social interactions, it is altering a biological build to suit your social preference. From this perspective, how is someone going through surgery for gender reassignment surgery any different then someone having a healthy leg chopped off so they can be comfortable with their legs?
While you have a right to believe about yourself what you chose, that does not mean that you have a right to force anyone else to address you as such. As soon as you do so, you are no longer advocating rights but advocating the loss of rights for another. It would be no different then forcing a religion on people or forbidding religion. This is the biggest problem with the discussion on "transgender rights". In most countries that this will reach, they already have the right to describe themselves how they chose, but they are trying to force others to adhere to their beliefs. When it involves government enforcement, it becomes a fascistic regression to days of old.
If people have a problem adjusting to society, there are people who can help with that, and not all of them are sociologists or psychologists, they are just good people who can be a good listening friend. There are numerous people who have trouble adjusting to society that have nothing to do with gender. Growing up as a nerd in the household of a jock is not easy, after at all. Self-mutilation or denial are not good coping methods. Acceptance of yourself as who you are is one of the first steps, no matter what hole society thinks you should be in. It is often this conflict between personal perception and societal groupings which can lead to the most damage to adjustment.
While I disagree with some of the steps many are demanding we take to help them, I can sympathize with their lack of social adjustment and hope they can find acceptance of themselves with alacrity. Disagreement over a solution is not a hatred or bigotry, just a difference of perspective to work with.

  • @jhjjjjjn
    @jhjjjjjn 7 лет назад +20

Gender roles and ideas of being feminine and masculine are a social concept, not gender itself. One example is long hair is considered feminine but this is more of a social concept than natural. Also yes, men physically are stronger than women BUT society does push women to be more fragile and soft while it does the opposite for men therefore making the difference much more noticeable and women seem to forget they they can go to the gym and actually put effort into being stronger and they can have the same strength as men. People also say that women are supposed to be the caregivers and the men be the bread winners but if you really think about it, that is also a social concept. People argue this by saying that in the stone age women protected the children and the men killed animals to provide food for their families but if you had a woman and a man isolated from all other humans including each other they would be very similar in the ways they survive. Since they would not have encountered other humans they would not have children or a family therefore the woman would go out and kill animals and get food for herself same as the man would do. Also fashion being masculine or feminine is also a social concept. Way back in history blue was considered the color for women and pink the color for men, the reason it is the opposite today is because society has changed. There are natural differences between men and women yes but there are many more differences created by society and wait for another 40 years or so and it will change again! Women will be encouraged to be whatever they want and men will be encouraged to suppress their feelings. The power stance in society, at least in Ameria, will be flipped. Minorities and women will be the most influential groups and white cis males will be at the bottom. I do wish for true equality myself but I am a realist and will admit that it's pretty much impossible. It's human nature to have a leader or leaders and to have inferior people. Humans love to dominate by nature, sexism and racism and inequality will never truly stop existing unless we want to make the whole world a communistic where if you speak ill about anyone that is not of the same race, gender, and sexuality as you, you will be killed. People need to grow the fuck up and look at the facts and the trends of society and stop complaining over petty issues. Sorry about my ranting and if you read till here you deserve a cookie. 🍪

While I agree with most of your ranting - I rant on a similar party line as well - one thing that struck me as odd is that when you wrote "Since they would not have encountered other humans they would not have children or a family therefore the woman would go out and kill animals and get food for herself same as the man would do", while that is hypothetically correct based on the capacity of an individual, but I would also like to put forward the argument of a sexual selection mechanism that is at work on a collective and macroscopic level, that perhaps there are seemingly environmentally constructed and arbitrary gender traits become innate to human nature (both psychologically and psychologically) through sexual selection for between 2 to 6 million years, further reinforcing gender reality as well as stereotypes.
For me, a utopia would be an existentialistic Marxist society, that everyone is responsible for themselves while having the empathy to understand each other's plight, that life on Earth is nothing more than rolling that damn boulder up that damn hill every damn day, the thought of it is already very euphoric. #feelsgoodbro

This is completely false. I strongly suggest you at least look up the etymological history of the word. "Gender" and "sex" are, and always were, synonyms. That only began to change in the early 20th century, and even then, it was the meaning of the word "sex" that altered, not "gender". "Sex" as "sexual relations" only began to be used around the 1920s.
"Gender is a social construct" only began to be argued in the late 60s/early 70s, and is *still* not a universally, or even widely, accepted argument - no matter what Gender Studies majors may say.

Language also evolves naturally, not by fiat - enforced language change, purely to serve the interests of power groups, is the destruction of language, not its evolution. As Orwell showed, with his description of "Newspeak".
Marxists have always been obsessed with destroying language, in the pursuit of power. "Gender" theory is no different.
It's a purely artificial attempt to foist change, in order to bolster the power of the Cultural Marxists, via the destruction of language. This is demonstrated by the fact that, outside the tiny echo-chamber of the leftist academy, the notion has been fiercely resisted.

How I've always thought about it is that sex and gender arent the same thing. Sex is the biological aspects and is generally binary, though some abnormalities do exist. Gender is a more sociological and cultural thing, namely in gender roles and social norms. While most people are cisgendered, or have the same gender and birth sex, not everyone does. With the complexity of the human mind and brain, it gets a bit strange. However, with Tumblr and what not, modern societies more open views have led to some people claiming different genders to try to be unique and express their individuality, and this generates a back lash with some more conservative people. I am not really sure how genuine most of this is, but I'll let them do whatever makes them happy so long as they aren't a jerk.
And another interesting thing about the David Reimar story is a later study done in Spain where some transgender people had their brain scans compared to cisgender people. The researchers found that the transgender people's brain structure was closer to their chosen gender than to the average cisgender person with the same biological sex, even before any hormonal treatments. Of course, brain structure changes based on experience which means this may not have been from birth. Either way, it is quite interesting.

_______________Yes, and the danger in that, if it's allowed to become normalized in any sense of the word, is that a precedent will have been set that erases the line separating "subjective" from "objective." It won't be immediately apparent, i'm guessing several decades at least, if not longer, it will be a slow degeneration of sanity and mental health. I can't think of another instance in history where such a precedent, however minor it may have seemed at the time, was put into place intentionally. Maybe someone reading this can think of one?
Subjective and objective must remain separate. Don't take my word for it, everyone, all the proof you need is right between your ears. Spend some time dedicated to thinking about this and only this even if it's just an hour a day for a month or so. The more time you spend on it the clearer it will become in your mind. You'll see it eventually. Don't try to steer it, just let it come. No expectations, only truth. Use your brain, that's what it's for. Don't let anyone tell you what to think or say or do. And always, ALWAYS question authority!

@Leo Xx the article was not saying that gender was in the brain. It was saying that your brain has expectations on what your sex is, and when it doesn’t match (this can be due to a genetical error, which DOES NOT mean it is bad, it’s like having myopy, some people have it, most don’t) then something called “gender dysphoria” happens, and that’s what most transgender people go through.
On a side note, I personnally believe that genders should be abolished once in for all, and that we should change language along with it. So that we don’t have problems such as wrong pronouns or wrong categorization.

Gender and Sex are synonyms. It's not hard, you can't just redefine what the word gender means by force. It meant the same thing 5, 10, and 20 years ago.
If we speak of Gender Identity, then by all means, I basically agree with most points you have to make about it, as it supports my basic philosophy for life. Live and let live, I don't care what you call yourself and respect your wishes as long as you give me the same courtesy.
But you can't change the word Gender to mean Gender Identity because you say so and accuse anyone who doesn't use the word the way you mean it. That's not how language works and it's bad faith.
Instead you could talk about actual issues. Like the problems of sexist teachers trying to force children to be trans because they don't conform to the stereotypes of their gender. It's wrong to even suggest that, and just furthers sexism in the guise of helping.
How this makes the issue of trans children very difficult to approach, because you do want to help those that are, but labeling girls that like boy things and boys that like girl things as trans, on that evidence alone, hurts everyone.
Or the suppression of such stories by the trans community. It happens, real life is complicated. And you can't be taken seriously by being blind to the facts you feel hurt your cause.
This is a major hurdle that has to be resolved so that trans rights can be respected as early in life as possible.

If a male wants to be called a boy or a girl, who cares. You can identify however you want, you can dismiss the social construct of gendered language and choose what to be called.

There are only 3 things I think: Male and Female for how your reproductive organs work, and those suuuper rare people who actually have both. I'd probably classify those who've had surgury to switch with that latter category, but if they haven't had still got their original parts then they are the male/female equivalent that they are. They don't exist. Its called sexual/gender dysphoria and its related to other diseases such as anorexia. There is no such thing as a "transgender". There's also the fact that those who believe in the delusion of transgender tend to have higher and higher rates of suicide the more they try to transition. While therapy instead kills the rate of suicide in these individuals. Meaning that if you don't get therapy you have a high chance of killing yourself and if you do get therapy you have a very low chance of killing yourself.
Dysphoria is a very wide spectrum of mental illnesses where you feel like something is wrong with your body and that you have to fix it. The therapy a person undergoes to treat this disease is to help them accept the body that they have and suppress the irrational urge to change themselves.
You see, what happens in dysphoric people who do try to change themselves is that the change is a temporary bandaid and when the bandaid no longer works they either try to change themselves more, or they realize the (permanent) damage they have caused to themselves and then they become suicidal.
Basically all you've done is show how little respect and tolerance you have for people who suffer from mental illnesses. Not to mention you don't care whether the people suffering from these diseases kill themselves. Which is horribly disgusting.

For example, when citing an argument about socially constructed gender, you bring up a "Rate my Professors" rating, which is an ad hominem. Why was that necessary, if not simply to (fallaciously) discredit the argument? You also say "there is no reason to create different terms for genders", and that "language historically simplifies itself" in your conclusion. Yet this ignores the fact that in the analysis of any subject, more terms are created to describe distinctions or be more specific with definitions to allow more precise assertions or critiques. Many words in common parlance emerged from intellectual discussions, such as "cultures" (plural) and "empathy".The argument for more gender terms is that it describes the experience of different individuals (and many languages actually already have additional terms to male/female, man/woman, boy/girl, as you pointed out) that are not usually encapsulated in the existing terms and has historically marginalized such experiences as weird, deviant, or perversions, and have even been made illegal, resulting in suicides, hate-crimes, arrests, public disgrace, loss of employment etc. More important things to some people, I think, than finding a good restaurant.

      @@justinthebaby7156 Oh, I see.
I'm unconvinced by the arguments that have been presented to me thus far. Yet, I'm completely open to being convinced through something compelling and reasonable.
I can't currently see how gender is separate from biological sex - some people argue they're both social constructs - and I think the traditional usage of gender is helpful as a categorization. I can't distinguish the additional genders I've heard of from a description of personality.
I'm very confused about the arguments I've heard and I can't tell if they're incoherent or if I'm lacking information. I'm also frustrated that the topic is always shouted down through authoritarian means when people like me just want to know what the hell others are talking about.
As I said originally, this is a contentious point that gets people fired up. That means we need to talk about it much, much more, not less. Contentious points are where growth happens. Ignorance and blind acceptance is where we regress. If a group/groups are attempting to change the scientific landscape of information, that information must withstand the scrutiny from all sides. That's simply how scientific findings manifest into Theory.

Male on one end, Female on the other, and everyone falls inbetween. Gender is already a spectrum, the same way there is short and tall, conservative and libralism and so on. We dont have fifty billion terms to desribe someone's height to an exact term, its just you are either short or tall, not demi-tall-non-conforming-short. Its literally "you fall on the height scale, boom. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp? Tappatron i think that is the other way around, men are stronger because of the roles they have played throughout their evolution. Anyway, just because things are someway that doesn't mean they have to stay that way, if you are so sure that males of females are naturally inclined towards some activities or to fill certain roles just let them be without pressuring them, with your way of thinking ultimately you should be right; if a woman just wanna be a hunter, or a wrestler, or a scientist, or wathever you think a woman can't do just let her be. Society should not impose certain roles in the kids, just let them be or do whatever they're best at doing.

Félix Bugueño of course things arent always gonna be the same, thats what evolution is, but evolution takes millions of years to show, only in the last couple of years people have been claiming that gender is socially constructed and that gender has become more than binary, but if this was scientifically true than there would be mass reports of this starting to happen years ago and building up, not suddenly capturing everyone. Yes, intersex and trasgender people have a existed for a long long time but this whole non com, agender theory doesn't sound like anything but a politic based label.

i think theres also an aspect that to some extent "biology" can be affected by social pressure. For instance there are studies that conclude that men do better on spacial reasoning tests. BUT counter studies have gone on to have woman "imagine they were men" and take the same spacial reasoning tests. the results concluded that woman who thought of themselves as men were able to score about the same as men. Just like outside stress can change the way your body digests food for instance, so to can society's expectations form neurological pathways that people would interpret as biology. Im not saying there are no biological differences between men and woman, but I'm pretty sure its a lot less than people think, and most of the rest of the actual biological differences can so easily be changed by hormones

_______ That's the truth. There is something good that came out of it, though, relatively speaking at least. Money's failure is proof positive that gender is grounded in biology. While society might influence us in how men and women are _supposed_ to act in any given culture, that's as far as it goes. Our internal sense of being male or female is chain-linked to our biological sex. It IS innate. Money proved it. The "social construct" theory died with that experiment. The only problem is that no one knew that it had failed except Money himself, because of legal requirements to keep the identities of the family secret during the experiment. Money was the only one who knew how it was really going.
He lied to the world and said 'David' was acting like any normal girl that age. That he was interested in dolls and loved to wear dresses and do girly things with his mom; that the was nothing at all out of the ordinary. The experiment was a success.
Year after year he reported this lie to his colleagues and to his employer. As well as in interviews for well-known scientific magazines. The "social construct" was factually true because of the Reimer case being a smashing success. His reputation was good enough that almost no one doubted his claims. This went on for nearly 30 years!
Then in 1997 we got hold of Reimer himself and interviewed him as a follow up requested by the hospital, because Money had long since stopped seeing him once a year. Reimer wouldn't go anymore. He had no idea his case was being used as the justification for sex normalization surgeries on infants born with ambiguous genitalia. Nor did he know that Money had lied about it being a success.
Everything that is based on 'gender' being a 'social construct' we now know, as of 1997, is bullshit!

What you are describing biologically about men and women is not gender. You are referring to sex. Sex determines a human's biological traits in distinction between men and woman. When you say, "The male gender is generally physically stronger than the female gender", you are wrong. What you mean is "The male sex is is generally physically stronger than the female sex".
Gender is the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones). When one uses the term gender, they are referring to the social and cultural aspects of being male or female. So, GENDER by definition is a social construct. It is the behaviours and traits that our culture associates with manhood and woman hood.
Sex is either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions. So sex separates humans and all other animals into the categories of men and woman based on our function in conceiving offspring. And certain biological traits come with that. That is why there are only two sexes but more than two genders. Because one fits only into one of the two categories in reference to reproduction but because gender only exists in our societies collective imaginations, gender does not easily fit the same dichotomy.

    • @tayavan3182
      @tayavan3182 6 лет назад +1

Good question! Intersex is a biological term, yes. So it would fall under sex. It is when a person's reproductive organs do not seem to fit the male or female sex. It is the name for a number of conditions. Such as having biologically female external organs, but internally having male reproductive organs. It is one of the few exceptions in nature to the two sexes. There are, however, many more than two genders. And honestly, if anyone ever gets mad at you for not knowing stuff like that or any terminology or the difference between sex and gender, than they are idiots. We should be celebrating that fact that people want to learn about this stuff! I don't know all of the LGBTQ terms at all. But what is important is being open to learning and not being afraid to ask. So, I'm really glad you asked! I always had trouble wrapping my head around the meaning of intersex so hopefully this helps!

Taya Van "Gender is the state of being male or female" - the problem is, healthy people don't feel they are males or females, they don't think about it at all. They just are. The unity between our body and mind is natural and beyond our consciousness. It's biological. Your body and mind aren't two separate organisms.
Gender is not a social construct, GENDER ROLES are.

  • @MrDj232
    @MrDj232 6 лет назад +1

Gender is a linguistic tool that encompasses male and female archetypes to describe people through pronouns and objects through personification. This works well for the human brain, which utilizes associations for rapid recall. Some aspects of those archetypes may stem from social constructs (eg color preference) while others are a direct result of biological tendencies. No one person is expected to fit all aspects of the archetype, nor does fitting aspects of the other archetype diminish their masculinity/femininity. But most of the time people will fit primarily into one, and that one will most commonly be the same as their biological sex. Only about 0.1% of the population tends to diverge from these tendencies.

  • @lemmh2

In actual science, real science, biological science, gender is the same definition of sex as it's an expression of sex. And while social science, like sociology and gender studies, might like to claim they have an argument against that; they don't. They just don't like the truth so have created an alternative take. Does it deserve equal weight? Well, I guess that part's subjective and up to the individual. But that's literally the only part about the "debate" that is subjective.
