Tom Hanks playing a 40-ish US Army Ranger Captain in 'Saving Private Ryan (1998).' Compare that to the oldest US Army Ranger officer present in Normandy on D-Day, Lt. Colonel James H. Rudder, 35 years old at the time.
Part of the lie movies tell us about the boys who fight our wars. It is quite intentional. We'd feel uneasy watching teenagers kill teenagers in a movie.
You did well capturing almost every one. I give u credit for that. Am not sure there will be any war movie that can displace Bridge to Far as the best WWll movie for me.
That was a long war drama and I've only seen it a couple of times, all the way through to the end. It was comprised of a large cast with several stars, but also many unknowns to the US audience. I must note that I didn't realize that the late Maximillian Schell was 47 at the time. I thought he was younger. Also, that was a surprising picture of Hardy Kruger in his later years, before his death.
Nope. I saw it in the theater when it premiered. Have watched it many times on all kinds of platforms. I even have the director's cut off on CD. It's very familiar to this American. Cheers from Tennessee
@@Hillbilly001 Cheers back from North Carolina. I've been an American all of my life...to include an Army veteran. I meant that several of the British, and other international actors, were not familiar to me.
@@zingwilder9989 OK.. I'll agree that a few of the German and British actors are probably not very familiar to most Americans. Although some were quite capable character actors that some wouldn't be really able to name, but if they watched German and British cinema they'd probably recognize the face. I saw a lot of German cinema when I was posted in W. Germany 84-87. Same with British cinema and television. Which I still enjoy. Cheers from a former US Army Ranger
This is a classic WW2 film. Some US actors show boating but lots of very solid performances. The near final scene is clunky where each gives a reason for the failure of Market Garden, but worthwhile as historical analysis. Had it worked, it would have shortened the war by months and saved many lives.
@laurencecheyne593 LOL! OK. Would have been better to clear the Scheldte Estuary months before they actually did. That really would have shortened the war and saved lives. But Eisenhower played politics because of the V weapons targeting the British, London to be exact. Supplies win wars not swanning off chasing glory. Cheers from a former US Army Ranger
General Horrocks appears a few times in The World At War documentary . He comes across as a well educated and pleasant man. I had no idea he used to live near me in UK on South Coast nr Chichester.
You left out crucial actors like Elliott Gould and Robert Redford but included people like Hartmut Becker who was a German sentry and had like 4 seconds of screen time?
Carried by Alun Armstrongs character "Cpl Davies" I remember reading somewhere on the fate of the chicken which was a mascot of soughts. In fact it went into Arnhem with its owner Lt Pat Glover inside a bag, who named it Myrtle unfortunately she was killed during a battle with german troops whilst still in her bag after dropped by Pat Glover who went into action. On return he found it peppered with bullets and Myrtle dead inside, she was then buried before they moved out.
Maximilian Schell played German Nazi officers. But remember playing Beethoven in the tv Disney The wonderful world of color way back to 1960. He also played bad guys in some action films.
I don't see Robert Redford, Elliot Gould, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Delhom Elliott , Ben Cross, Alun Armstrong, Michael Graham Cox, Arthur Hill, in conclusion there aren't enough protagonists in this famous war film.
@@mariaclaudiacastanedamarro7298 It did include Alun Armstrong, but yes, a few were left out. I didn't recall that Ben Cross was in it; however, I do remember that Arthur Hill was the doctor that James Caan confronted with a weapon. You have a good memory.
Well,…in their defense,…it was a rather ridiculously awful movie. Easily the cheesiest war movie I have seen. I’ve seen higher quality productions from high school plays. Of course,…it probably doesn’t help that I saw Burt Lancaster’s “The Train” the week prior. Which, by the way, IS the single greatest war movie ever made, in my opinion.
No Elliott Gould, Robert Redford, or Lawrence Olivier?
Don’t forget John ratzenburger
I totally forgot that Elliott Gould, Laurence Olivier, Denholm Elliott and Robert Redford were totally not in that movie at all. Silly me.
A movie I always like watching which is based on fact. Also a good movie for playing, spot the superstar actor. 😉
The age of the actors was acceptable for playing officers but most of those playing lower ranks were way too old.

I love playing at PS2 Medal of Honor that was a fun mission
Fun? I wonder if the actual Arnhem Veterans would have shared that same dumb ass opinion.

Hans von Borsody? Borsody hungarian name.
What? No then and now photos of the chicken carried by one of the British paratroopers in one of the aircraft?
