If you have a pantry in a earthquake prone zone then make sure you have front barriers on you shelf’s to keep your breakables in place and falling down and breaking…….the old adage “a stitch in time saves nine”……cleanup is always longer then taking safety measures before hand. Bless you AG 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have all of the above, and more grains. I have the vacuum attachment and found that the regular-mouth ones work better if you use two lids; the top one will easily come off. I have a vacuum chamber that works with after-market jars,(salsa, olives, whatever), as long as they have their original metal lids. I have more angel hair pasta than others because it cooks quickly .Most people don't realize that although pasta looks good even when it isn't vacuum-sealed or airtight in any way, it breaks down when exposed to air. When it is boiled, it gets pasty. I vacuum-seal dehydrated vegetables, and pre-frozen, then warmed, granola bars and candy. (LOVE your sweater!)
I vacuum seal with a "seal a meal" machine. I mostly use quart size bags but I can do whole bags of sugar and flour in the gallon size. Instant Oatmeal, grits, things like that, I cut a quart bag and seal 4 bags in each so we only open what we need. I do the same thing for everything I put in the freezer.
As always, your videos are so helpful AG! I have the same portable jar vacuum sealer and haven't removed the plastic either. Have been vacuum canning everthing from flour, chocolate chips, beans, crackers, chia seeds, (real) maple syrup, even raisins. My rice is stored in plastic Coke bottles, so that I can save my precious jars😊 Thank you. ❤ to sweet Teddy....
I did this last weekend, this exact list Rice Beans (a variety of what you like) Lentils, Split peas Pasta (not egg noodles) Oatmeal Popcorn Tea bags. What I like to do is break up linguine and use it for noodles for soups etc. This weekend I'm doing a rice a roni type thing with spaghetti and rice with a packet of seasonings in each jar as well as lentils and rice for a base for lentil and rice soup and/or stew. Every little bit helps. Thanks for all you share
Hold onto your wallet! Another increase is coming. Bird farms destroying chickens by millions. I suggest finding a powder egg product you like ( may not like them but good for cooking, baking! ) Put in jars as AG just explained sealing or portion out in vac seal bags or mylar (food savor or AG have videos on this.) Chicken meat and eggs going up again. I think any product using dry egg will increase or have shortages like Complete just add water Pancake mix, Biscuits! I'm stocking up! Hope this helps.
When I discovered your channel in 2021, I had already made the mistake by vacuum seal pasta. It all blew off because of sharp edges. I now know much better, AG. Thanks for everything we learn here. Love from South Africa
Good Morning AG So nice to see you.. Thank you for all of your tips..I've used your 'sock over the jar' tip before on glass jars that I put in the freezer too. Which video is of the other containers to store foods in? Love and Prayers to you, Teddy and your family : )
Excellent advice, as always AG.👍 I also have a very large quantity of Teabags. Lol. 🇬🇧 My foodsaver is such a great investment, no more Meat freezer burns either. TFS AG, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤🙂🐶
This week I’ve been vacuum ceiling dehydrated, lemon slices in jars so then I’ll be able to have them with my ice tea at any time! I’ve got dehydrated, frozen broccoli, vacuum, sealed in jars to add to soups and such. Thank you so much for all you do and teach us.🤗👍
I just received the same portable/rechargeable sealer that you show in this video. I did 3 jars and it seems to work fine! I’m in the Ozarks of Arkansas and enjoy your videos very much! I’m a retired professional musician and a Master Gardener. I plan on preserving my organic harvest this summer.
I bought one of those small black vacuum sealers on Amazon also. It worked for about six jars. It was a waste of money! I am using my Food Saver from 1999!
Appreciate all your knowledge and tips. Make sure no chips on edge of glass jars too.I love my Mason Jar Genie. You can re- seal your jars if need be. I have packed flour and will ge doing sugar and yeast.
I finally put on my phone calendar to remind tomorrow to call the Food Saver company to get the lid and tube for the jars! It’s still so busy with doctor appointments for my husband cancer treatments, etc., that I keep forgetting. Can you tell me, or maybe I should ask when I call tomorrow, if there’s a way to clean the Food Saver after vacuum sealing things like flour so that I don’t ruin the Food Saver? Thank you, and God bless🙏💕
First of all. Love your sweater. A great color for you. Second. I have a food saver vac system. And I also have a cordless like the one you showed. I have the opposite issue. My food saver does not vacuum as well as the cordless one does. But whatever works best for the individual. Keep up the great work.
I love my Food Saver! I use jars for some foods in my kitchen pantry, but I also leave some pasta, rice and beans in their original packaging for longer storage. I cut a tiny slit it it and put it in a FS bag and vacuum seal it. I have a tote for each (rice, beans, pasta, etc) and mark the best buy date on the bag When I need more in the kitchen, I open a bag (or 2) and put it in the jar. I also vacuum seal flour and cornmeal the same way. I seal (no vacuum) sugar, as well. The bags are water proof, so no worries there.
I uses to pressure can meats in a quart size jar. After 4 of our six kids moved out, it is now in pint size jars. You have to do what is most practical for you.
This was such good basic information which is so helpful for those who are just getting started with long term food storage. As always, I do appreciate your videos and the information you share.
“Orphan Socks!” I thought my husband made up that term! 🤣 😂 Another helpful video. I just, coincidentally, purchased a similar rechargeable vacuum sealer! So glad you posted this! 😊
I go 2 steps farther when dry canning. I put the food ( rice, or noodles, or beans) in the jar and then heat it in the oven for 1 hour at 230 degrees F. This ensures thst the food is as dry as possible. I then take out one jar at a time from the oven. Then I add 1 oxygen absorber and 1 moisture absorber. Then I vacuum seal the jar. This process kills more bugs and bacteria. There is less moisture, and because the air is hot in the jar while vacuum sealing, I get more air out of the jar. The jar also seals better because the jar and the lids are hot. The rubber seal conforms better to the jar for a tighter fit.
Hi A.G. this was a great topic. Question do you reuse product jars with original lid and vacuum seal them? Example Pasta jars, pickle jars? I have used them with oxygen absorbers only but would love to use for beans. Does powdery foods (Tang) damage the jar sealer?? Thank you.
With powdery items, I put a cupcake liner inside the jar before putting on the lid and vacuum sealing. It keeps the powder from being sucked into the machine. A folded paper towel would also work. Just make sure it doesn't interfere with the lid fitting flat.
Hello, I’m starting to do this for the first time, if I use the Vacuum seal, do I have to put an oxygen absorber? You have an other video where you said that we should not use oxygen absorber with some food, is there a list of them? Where can I find it? I’d been looking for it but couldn’t fine any! Tks

I always learn something in your videos, thank you.
this is how I store some of my dry food, I also have done whole spices and some of my dried herbs this way
I've started using pint jars I stead of quarts. More usable sizes.

How long are the beans good for vacuum sealed? If something is expiring soon and I vacuum seal it, would it still be good?
If something is expiring soon, I would use it, rotate, replace.
If they are dried beans they should be good for years, if stored correctly.
But a good alternative idea would be to soak them, then one of 3 things (or all three, of course:
1. Cook them and can the cooked beans.
2. Sprout them, then cook and can the bean sprouts.
3. Sprout them and at the first sign of sprouting, plant them and grow more beans.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

What do you still use mason jars to store foods in your camper?
I try to use plastic containers.
What’s the name of the medicine you use to get thorns and splinters out of your fingers?
Ichthammol ointment. Here is a link where I buy it on amazon. amzn.to/3JjRx76

I think I saw that the costs has risen to 48 percent.
That is closer. Many things have doubled or more, so a 48% average is reasonable.
