Since I first heard this song 50 years ago, it's always been my go to song when I'm feeling down because I feel Keith's emotion in the lyrics and the music accompanying him and you can't forget Jagger's gentle sky fall down again. Every part of this song is pure perfection. The Stones can rock out for sure, but when they do a ballad it's special!
Never realized that it was Taylor on bass, if you listen 🎶 it's very good tasteful and economical. Just like h I s guitar playing except if it's live and they are on, and he's wired you'll get your ears ripped off.
I think this is the fault of some influential critics whom identified strongly with the Stones and couldn’t handle when some of their best songs turned out to be introspective ballads. It’s like they were trying to hold off aging with rockers like “Brown Sugar” and others in a similar vein.
Yes, a stellar lineup. With that roster just added, to the Glimmer Twins, Mick and Keith, almost can't go wrong. That series of LPs back to back to back to back-Beggars, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile) Then what many considered a clunker back then-Goats Head Soup. Which, time has shown (in my opinion anyway), to be a subtly deceptive sleeper. A great funky album. Some masterpieces (Angie, Doo, Doo, Doo Heartbreaker, Silver Train, Winter to name a few) And after they had sort of decided to kinda walk back the whole satan thing of Sympathy and the onstage persona of Mick aka Lucifer. What do they do? Give it that name, implying satanic rituals are still being cooked up in their kitchens. As if that wasn't enough, the song that says it all. Dancing with Mr. D. Which lyrically talks about actually having a relationship with both Lucifer and his mate. Very cheeky indeed, as the Brits would say. Ah, but I digress. Forgive me. Yes, great song, great album. Great fucking band!! Period.
my fav from this studio collection. but as is now clear to me, the tour smoked the studio in 73. eg, those little 'jamaican' percussive sounds are highly annoying.
Now with the passing of Charlie Watts brings back many memories of The Rolling Stones at the Garden at Shea at Studio rest in peace Thanks for the Memories
The first time I heard this song,I was hitching cross country, when this guy in a red caddie convertible, stopped & picked me up. This song was playing. It's the 1st time I had ever heard it !!!! What a memory !!!! Xenobia Darkwolf *X*
One of my fave albums and songs. Played this record so much, I’m surprised the vinyl stood the test. Note that WAITING FOR A FRIEND was in the works only to show up later. RIP Nicky and Bobby.
@keith Richards I love ya Keith! You’re my ALL TIME VERY FAVE musician. I’ve followed everything you’ve done since the late 60’s. I literally have every record. Saw you with the New Barbarians. Watch your interviews. I have your book LIFE. And of course, seen you live.-.-which is always a special treat. ❤️ Yes, would love to get updates. lisa_keelor@yahoo.com
If you are/were a junkie, it hits home, that empty space of confusion, illness, you are dreaming but you are awake, the weirdness in your head and ears are so confusing but make total sense when they connect, and that's just the mental part of it, coming down is a whole lot of weirdness and feelings
Brilliant album. Took me aeons to appreciate & understand it. So far from “Exile”. It blew my mind. Mick Taylor was elevated to guitar icon, quite rightly.
All the albums that got blasted by fans and critics are great. I hear new things in those songs all the time. The Stones are really unique that way. Any other artist, if you don't like it, you just don't like it. Some of The Stones songs didn't grab us at first, but when you go back to them they sound different. They have songs that I love more and more each time I listen.
I love this song 🎵 ❤️ it's full of emotion and feelings 🎉🎉. I love when they do their ballads cause, they just get down into your very soul🎉🎉.Mick you and the boys really are something special and no one can ever touch you or come close to you ❤️ 💙 ♥️ 💗
The 60-70s they were on fire 🔥 then again later 80s when Keith got sober but have to say to me 60-70 I'll take them anyday glad I grew up having this played always when my grandmother was raising me
1973 I was in the Somerville projects, we left Wakefield because of a really bad domestic situation, that winter it was so cold too. I was 9 years old, a stranger in a new place I felt very cold, hungry and alone and if it wasn't for songs like Angie and Day By Day, I didnt think that I*'d make it to 60. Here we go 6 oh....Thank you Mick and Keith for being my surrogate family for all of these years.....HAPPY 2024 everyone!!
yes a great tune!!!!! i like the combo of bobby keyes on the sax and nicky hopkins on the piano..... it gets me down... i can identify with the stones music...bob

Me and my wife listen to you all the time Halloween music for my wife died in 2018 and all I can hear so many music and come out of your voice thank you
Besides all its other qualities, this song is one of the best examples of the weave K.R. talks about where you can't always tell who is playing what, where lines dart out of the mix, parts become both rhythm and lead as they lean into the compression bloom then naturally fading back for a few beats to show up again, who knows how and where. Solos are sort of partial phrase interactions with other instruments and in and out masking is as important as C.W.'s stop and go style. The main piano/guitar/bass interplay - on its own and with the vocals - makes this song absolutely unworldly. Brilliant.
Fine word indeed Old Shadow Hand I'm a bit of a Keithaholic myself and when life gets me down as it frequently does this masterpiece of a song helps me cope💎💯👍☘️🇮🇪
Ty, Matt for this discussion that made me feel safer from neg. feelings, that are pretty scary in so many new shows these days... and that we really do have means to protect ourselves in our surroundings.... sometimes I just feel with all the bad things we have to hear about on the news leaves some of us here just need to escape from Earth.... ty... I love checking in with you every week.... ❤ Barbara G...😊
I'm discovering this LP near 50 years later. When it was issued, I was only around 11. At home my elder brother and sister who made the strict rules for music good tastes said about it : for soup, it'truely soup, the Stones are now definitly finished. The picture from the cover didn't help... 😣 Obviously, earing it now, I like some of Goats Head Soup songs, even Angie 'la scie' brings me good vibrations. I thank my brother and sister, they put all these songs into my mental freezer, and I'm now so glad to receive this flash back from the past. GREAT !
To bad Goats Head did not get noticed like it should have a true Gem love it ,listen to it all the time to this day the year I graduated from High School

We are know about let it bleed, sticky fingers and exile on main street but this album never got the credit it deserved it,s a masterpiece.
100% agree
Best line in this song:
Bein’ hungry, it ain’t no crime. That line always hits me like a bulldozer
She was dying to survive (that one hits are for me too)
I agree. Keith’s voice sounds so good on this song
Keith, fast or slow. Always the most soul filled voice in the room.
Most underrated song in their vast catalog
Time waits for no one"...
Ah man, rest in peace Charlie. What a great album. Greatest R&R band ever.
The pocket between bass and drums on this track is a perfect example of Charlie just killin it being Charlie man!!!

Nope. Still the Beatles, and that's unlikely to change ever. Sly & the Family Stone #2. Frank Zappa #3. The Who #4. The Kinks #5. Rolling Stones #6...

RIP Jimmy Miller. He coaxed the very best out of 'em. 1968-1973.
Mick Taylor adds incredible bass playing to this gem of a song!
Never realized that it was Taylor on bass, if you listen 🎶 it's very good tasteful and economical.
Just like h I s guitar playing except if it's live and they are on, and he's wired you'll get your ears ripped off.
Taylor on bass in that intro is genuinely incredible
We thank you for not saying "literally". 😉
Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock N Roll are criminally underrated.
So sad and true
Yes brother
I agree Josh but not by me, they are both my favourites 💎💎💎🌟🌟👍☘️
I think this is the fault of some influential critics whom identified strongly with the Stones and couldn’t handle when some of their best songs turned out to be introspective ballads.
It’s like they were trying to hold off aging with rockers like “Brown Sugar” and others in a similar vein.
Exactly! GHS , BB , It’s Only Rock Roll are all great and I probably listen to them more than any others!
The piano/saxophone solo at 3:47 by Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keys is one of my favorites in the entire Stones collection.
EPIC!
You took words right out my mouth.
Two of the greatest players then and now! Their playing stands the test of time without a Doubt!
Miss Mick Taylor era.....and this is one of my all time favorites
An underrated and overlooked ballad from the band! RIP Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keys ♥️
Loved them. Imagine that band in the early 1970s with Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins, Bobby Keys. Amazing collection of talent.

One of the best off the album. Keith’s voice sounds so good here
Keith has a really beautiful voice, if used well. I especially like how it mixes with mick's voice.

This is a great song. 100 Years Ago, this song, Winter, and Can You Hear The Music touch my soul when I listen to this album.
The beauty of Keef and his mates🎸
Forever The Rolling Stones
Imho one of the best vocal performances in Keith 's career
Well he WAS living it back then! So he knew about 'coming down'!
He sang about what he knew- and man, did he know drugs. And I agree, it is his best vocal performance.
From the heart, as he says.
@@marty6779 And the needle!

This and You Got the Silver are my two favorite Keith songs. Beautiful work.
@keith Richards
You're one of the best
Is it me or is the piano slightly different here? Maybe it’s a little clearer but it definitely sounded more pronounced than on previous mixes.
@@djstarsign someone may have slightly inched up the treble before loading this version. Listening to this now, I’m still so in love with this song.
